This is good know that 2
radios will be able run as repeater unlike others on market. .
But You need a Duplexer for uhf .
    2 antennas on a tower 14 leangth
apart is hard to put up.
FCC requirements CW repeaterstation ID every 15 minutes if un-manned station.
Wouxun should put CW ID in the radio.
Yes you can voice ID as callsign.
    but can't leave by on 24/7 .
If mic on TX radio keys up while iin repeater mode you can put a cw ID
Like ID o matic on mic input RJ-45 .
Over all technology is getting better .
The Mobil is ultimate GMRS Mobil today.
    Great video .

Just a thought: Having one of these very expensive units just to receive is a bit of luxury and renders the repeater idea a very expensive adventure. There are simple HT options using inexpensive duplexers for the same purpose, and if you hook up the TX handheld to an amplifier, then you can have the same powerful solution for fraction of the price. Another issue I see is the lack of a built-in controller for Station Identification. For that, you will need an external controller of some sort to be built that is compatible with this mobile system, for an additional cost that makes it even more expensive. I'm just surprised they haven't built in any sort of Station-ID solutions, when they have specifically created this mobile radio for Repeater operation. Could have been done with a software solution in the menu to identify the station in the required 10 minute intervals, so the repeater could be used legally by external operators as well. So yeah, there are a lot of things to think about before someone jumps into buying 2 of these rather expensive radios for a home based GMRS repeater system. However, on the positive side, GMRS users can enjoy yet another brand that offers a powerful radio on their favorite radio service band with the repeater option that the competition doesn't have.

    • @BuyTwoWayRadios
      @BuyTwoWayRadios  3 роки тому +8

The reason Wouxun did not build a controller for auto station ID was because although you can make two of these radios into a repeater, it is certainly not its primary function. It's intended as a mobile/base GMRS radio. The repeater functionality is just one fun and handy capability that puts it in another tier from other GMRS mobiles. It is NOT its primary function.
The video is simply a tuturial to show how to make it into a repeater. And, yes, with a controller and a duplexer it can function as a permanent repeater.
However, the intent of the feature is so it can be used as a either a private or emergency mobile or base repeater. Also, this is not creating a ham radio repeater, it's a GMRS repeater, and the rules are different. First, the station ID is not required after every 10 minutes, as with an amateur repeater, but every 15 minutes. Also, as a private repeater used only by the operators of a single GMRS license, a station ID for the repeater itself is not required, as the GMRS license is assigned to that repeater by the GMRS licensed owner, and each station operator operating under that same GMRS license will be providing the ID as they use it. The auto station ID is only needed for repeaters that operate publicly or used by multiple different GMRS licensees.
As a side note, we are well aware of the demand for a compatible station ID controller and interface for the KG-1000G and have been working with Wouxun on such a solution in the future. Stay tuned for further developments. We appreciate the comments and feedback!

You should follow up with - how to order a gmrs duplexor. There are several questions not answered on the web site such as:
    - is the duplexor wide enough for the whole GMRS band, or do I need to pick a specific repeater channel?
    - where do you specify the frequency on the duplexor order page?
    - which duplexor is recommended for GMRS repeater operation using just 1 antenna.
Thank you for this video, and especially for the repeater functionality in this transceiver. I know of no other GMRS unit capable of being a self contained repeater that is part 95 qualified, and therefore legal.
Other stand alone GMRS repeaters I’ve seen, appear not to be part 95 qualified, and therefore not legal, even though they may be a good units.

We don't have a perfect option for GMRS right now, our duplexers are more geared towards LMR (business) customers and the best GMRS option would be to get a 450-470 MHz business duplexer and have it tuned for your repeater frequency. Check back with us in a couple of weeks though and we might have a better option ;)

I just set up two Wouxun radios and have tested this repeater options, it’s pretty cool.
I have two questions though. Is there a way to boost the audio on the system? The audio level is very quiet and I have to turn the volume up to hear communications compared other local channels.
Two, any progress on an IDOMATIC type system?

    • @BuyTwoWayRadios
      @BuyTwoWayRadios  3 роки тому +5

We haven't heard of any issues with low audio. However, such an issue can be caused by desensing if you are using two antennas and they are not spaced far enough apart. Also, check the bandwidth settings on your radios in the repeater configuration. If one is set for narrowband and the other for wideband, that could affect the audio level.
As for the IDOMATIC system, we are still working on developing a setup specifically for the KG-1000G.

A mobile duplexer is roughly the same footprint as a KG-1000G and maybe just over half the height. No, it doesn't have the ability to send your callsign. We're still in the early stages there so give us a couple of months and see what we can come up with. The good news is that if you're only using the repeater just for individuals covered by your callsign there is no ID requirement. Also, the ID can be made manually if necessary.

They recommended that in a heavy TX situation, like a public repeater, they do suggest using the feature that automatically activates the fan based on the temperature (menu 37, and this is already the default). They also suggest using the TOT and TOA menu settings (menu options 11 and 12) to limit the maximum time for a single TX to at most 60 minutes.

    • @BuyTwoWayRadios

It's on our agenda to come up with a solution for this. We may develop a cable that makes it easy to connect to a popular controller, or send sample radios to someone like RadioDan so that ID-O-Matic can have an interface readily available when purchased through his site. I'm not sure which direction we will end up going, but I'd guess we're a couple of months away from having an option. Hope you haven’t bought those radios for a repeater, they are an outstanding radio to throw in your car or a small farm in repeater mode. But they desensitized the receiver so much when it’s in repeater mode,
No one can hit it unless they are within 10 miles or so.
BTWR don’t mention that. There are other options you will get better results from.

Question if I use these radios for a permanent repeater station do these radios have a automatic station ID built into it. I Believe by FCC regulations you have to ID once every 10 minutes. Would be nice if there is a feature built into the radio to do this for me is that an option thank you very much.

There is no built-in function for Station ID. However, if your repeater is intended for use as a private or closed repeater system, you are not required to transmit a Station ID every 10 minutes. There are still specific rules regarding identification, though. We have a blog post about repeater ID guidelines on our blog, you can find a more detailed explanation there:

@@buytwowayradios9913 Continuous power on is not a problem. Continuous transmitter on, at the high power setting, like in a high use repeater, is not recommended. This is a mobile radio. With a duty cycle rating of a mobile application. 5-5-90 duty cycle, which means 5% of the time transmit, 5% receive, and 90% standby (squelched receiver).
Commercial repeaters are rated at 100% transmitter power output. They are designed that way and that is why they cost more and have large heat sinks and fans to handle the heat from the transmitter. Recommend the user sets the mobile transmitter radio at low or medium power setting (add a fan over the heat sinks). I have built repeaters using mobile radios (with a fan) for events and this works keeping them under 25 watts transmitter power. System running on battery power in remote locations. Never full power since the duty cycle is greater than 5%.

I raised this exact question with Wouxun and they were confident in saying that the high transmit rate of repeater use shouldn't be an issue. They point out that they have been selling a commercial repeater for years, the KG-DR1000 (www.wouxun.com/radios/two_way_radio_KG-DR1000.aspx), that is also two very similar linked mobile radios and reliability has not been a problem. I haven't used the KG-1000G as a repeater under high use, but once we have a controller interface developed we plan to install a pair as a local GMRS repeater and we will then report our direct experience with how they hold up.

@@buytwowayradios9913 I have not been able to find any published duty cycle specifications from Wouxun mobile type repeaters. The mobile radio will have both VSWR and thermal protection that reduces the RF power to protect the RF power module from damage. Yes it will still transmit, just with a lower RF power output. Many manufactures offer "desktop repeaters" using mobile radios. If you read the specs. you will discover they are not rated at 100% duty cycle, unless you run them at less than half power to keep from over heating. Most are less than 50% duty cycle at full power.
No problem using mobiles as long as you use them correctly within their published specifications. There is a reason why desktop type repeaters are not allowed to be installed at commercial repeater sites. Their receivers are not designed to withstand very high levels of RF exposure that you encounter at repeater sites. They may cause interference to other repeater users because of mixing signals, due to poor rejection of other signals. I have two older Wouxun portable radios and they are still operating. One part 97 (ham) and one part 90 type approved for commercial service. Wouxn knows how to build commercial radios.

@@peterliljequist160 Even some commercially produced repeaters use mobile radios. Case in point: The Yaesu Fusion DR-1X, dual band VHF/UHF amateur radio repeater is made from two FTM-400XDR mobile units. Of course, they added extra cabling, an interface, and a rack mount with fans. But it *is* made with mobile radios. If done right, i.e. lots of cooling, mobile radios work fine in a repeater situation. I personally prefer to run the radios at reduced output and add a power amplifier (PA). The radio lasts longer, and if the PA dies, it is easily replaced. I'd rather "burn out" a PA than the radios. ;)

That will also depend on the surrounding terrain and the antenna heights of the radios accessing the repeater. There are a number of rf calculators available online to help figure out line of site and distance to the horizon. In short, your mileage will vary based on all those factors. However, it's a 50 watt mobile radio, so the average range is going to be what you would typically expect from a mobile/base radio attached to a decent antenna. Keep in mind that this isn't intended as a 24/7 dedicated repeater system, but is a handy feature for using a pair of KG-1000G mobile radios periodically as a temporary or emergency repeater system.

You can build your own antenna if your a do-it-yourself kind of person. A simple one is the 1/4 wave ground plane antenna. It's not a high gain antenna, but it is very inexpensive to build. I made one with about $5 of parts, excluding coax (actually less because I used some spare parts on hand). The coax cable is often the most expensive part of many antenna systems. If you really feel ambitious, you can research antennas and build other antennas that improve performance, i.e. a 5/8 wave (which is about 1.5x better than the ground plane). Even more ambitious would be a colinear antenna. A bit of research and building skills are needed, but the gain is impressive. The more you put into the antenna, the better your system will be! Of course, if you lack the time/skills or just want a commercial version, buy one. They're under $100 (July 2021) and will be more than adequate for most situations.

What we meant by legal was that the radio is FCC type accepted for use on Part 95, which most other repeaters are not. Again, according to the rules, No ID is required when it is used as a private repeater by family members under the same GMRS license. It can also be used as a temporary or emergency repeater by manually transmitting the ID as needed, so technically it is still legal when used under those conditions. As a permanent repeater, an automated ID would be required, but we are working on that.

Although some manufacturers of consumer radios advertise a specific range in a set number of miles on their products, we make no claims to specific range limits on this or any other radio we sell. This is because range is going to depend on where, how and under what circumstances the radio is used. You may reach across the visible horizon on a mountaintop with clear line of site in good weather. You may not get far at all if you are transmitting between a forest of skyscrapers or at the bottom of a ravine in the middle of an electrical storm. There is no absolute for range.
