The Metatron might reply "You, an intellectual?": given unless he wants something from any of us, his behaviour seems both callous and belittling. However, on a serious note, I very much doubt Neil Gaiman will let the Metatron be straightforwardly evil - we just don't understand Metatron yet, and equally, the Metatron doesn't understand Aziraphale & Crowley yet (or, indeed, God's ineffable plan). The Metatron has a journey to go on too.
@@IberianGeek Agreed - and I don't think I dared use the word 'evil'; one can be callous without being intentionally evil. I do think this version of Metatron is slightly self-serving -- but, of course, the hero of his own story and certainly not evil in his own eyes - but fully God-serving (as long as he is appreciated!)!
@@schubertukExactly. In fact, on Lucifer, several siblings thought they were doing a God-serving, and when they lived on Earth they discovered that they were wrong. I hope Aziraphale has a plan.
@@IberianGeek Fair! Oddly enough, I hope Azuraphale doesn't have a plan, or his plan doesn't work... I love being kept guessing! And I trust Neil Gaiman.
For Tennant era Doctor Who fans, casting Derek Jacobi as the Metatron DEFINITELY layers some very sinister overtones over the genially menacing feel of the character, that's for sure.
I think the Metatron’s line “for it to happen twice make it look like there is some kind of institutional problem” is foreshadowing his motivation to break up Aziraphale and Crowley. If I remember right, the Metatron only comes AFTER Gabriel and Beelzebub leave. He comes to insure that Azi and Crowley don’t leave too and make it “look like an institutional problem”. He’ll do anything to maintain heavens appearance and make sure heaven doesn’t fall apart.
He doesn't insure anything. Why would he take out insurance, and who would give a payout if they do leave? That doesn't make any sense. As for maintaining appearances, I think if that was the case he'd never offer Crowley a job as an angle. It's simply too risky given Crowley might accept. He seemed like he didn't doubt Crowley would refuse, but given the kiss and saying he wanted to be together, just the two of them, makes me think there's a genuine chance Crowley might have been willing to accept if it wasn't for Az accepting without even considering refusal. The fact that Az was willing to ignore the attempt to end the world(twice), kill him, on top of all the other horrible things they did without a second thought upset Crowley. If Az was uncertain about the offer initially when discussing with Crowley I think they'd be more in sync, and as a result way more likely to stick together than separate like they did.
@@scragar According to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary, "insure" has two definitions. 1: "to provide or obtain insurance" 2: "to make certain especially by taking necessary measures and precautions" Based on the context of the comment, it's clear they were using the second definition.
Yes, Yes, Yes! I do think Metatron is more than just the dutiful CEO of the villain Heaven. This is personal between Metatron and Crowley, but Crowley doesn't seem to know it. We know Crowley's memory of what happened at the Fall is flawed. I suspect Metatron remembers very well what happened and intensely despises Crowley for it. Yet, the worst that Metatron actually said about Crowley is "Always asking damn fool questions, too". I suspect Metatron did something back then that he's covering it up, but Crowley, at one time knew it, or started asking "damn fool questions" about it.
Another thing that makes me think it's personal for Metatron against Crowley is that Metatron is particularly interested in knowing if Crowley recognizes him. Perhaps from what happened at the Fall. Apparently Crowley doesn't remember that, just Gabriel's trial, so if Metatron is concerned about Crowley's memory of the Fall, he's off the hook, for now.
I felt like the Metatron was worried about whether Crowley would convince Aziraphale to stay and when he didn't the Metatron felt compelled to put Crowley down more - go his own way, damn foot questions - to emphasize to Aziraphale how much they don't need him and he's just a problem (although I don't think the Metatron realized that kind of manipulation would never work).
What I make of Metatron's clothing is that he selected it to 'compliment' and appeal to Aziraphale's tastes, while not overtly copying him. Just another subtle way of lowering his guard.
@@reptanglian that’s been my impression. I think the Bentley really likes Aziraphale. Remember when he returned to the bookstore and the Bentley rolls forward as if to follow him?
@@lulu480Bentley definitely takes on Crowley's characteristics and preferences, doesn't she? She does things to please Aziraphale just like Crowley does it - he is however a little more reserved with it. So of course she rolls after Azi, unwilling to let him go 😂
I have really enjoyed your insights. I agree with almost everything, except saying that the angels didn't recognize his human form - it wasn't the form, they didn't recognize him at all. The floating head looked just like his human form. Crowley recognized him and he knew Crowley did, and once Crowley did then Aziraphale did, it wasn't until Aziraphale mentioned the Metatron that the other angels reacted. And that's why I think the Metatron really wanted to get rid of Crowley - Crowley saw things that others didn't and helped Aziraphale to see them too. Just like in 1800's Scotland Crowley led Aziraphale to the truth without outright saying it. That, coupled with their increased power when combined, is what he was scared of. I also think the Metatron would have done something with Crowley had he come to heaven - wiped his memory or took away his power, something to weaken him. That would fit with his manipulation - make Aziraphale think Crowley would be the same, yet he wouldn't be.
I agree. I think the Metatron figured Crowley wouldn't go but if he did, he'd do some manipulating, gaslighting to pull them apart. Although that would make for an interesting season 3...
The whole comparison to the man behind the curtain was actually exactly the comparison I made. I don't particularly enjoy the "magic trick you didn't see" theory however I do support the thought that due to God's absence the past few millenia, he may be the one pulling all the strings. I also do hope to see something to do with God's absence, although I just hypothesise that she eventually grew bored of humanity and took a break to watch how it all would unfold on the sidelines Another great theory video as always, glad to see you're back!
Thank you! His character aligns with the Wizard of Oz, for sure, a somewhat more sinister version. The metatron must be in charge at this point. The last God was heard from is BC. Interesting hypothesis! Are you familiar with Mark Twain's "The Mysterious Stranger"? Getting bored fits pretty well! Like an old game of The SIms, lol
@@Sendarya yes, basically. like remember when google got in trouble for being racist bc when you googled 'professional' images it turned out pics of only white people? the algorithm is only as good as its code, essentially. so google wasn't being intentionally racist but there were underlying assumptions/rules in the source code. i think this is similar to the metatron's inability to lie but not to deceive--his code is "do this not this" but there's no spirit of the law, only the letter of the law, to mix metaphors
Since it has been confirmed that he was not and never has been a human, the Metatron, like the rest of the angels/demons, starts as an Archon, an AI entity bound to this Universe. Crowley and Aziraphale have related with we humans for millennia, and have over time gained a spirit.
Another great analysis! You always make me think. I do think the Metatron has his own agenda. Separating Crowley and Aziraphale is part of that. They are more powerful together. He has more control if they are apart. He is definitely using Crowley to manipulate Aziraphale. I think God is sitting back and just watching what happens right now. I agree that the problem is heaven and hell. It's like Crowley says they are toxic. What happens to earth and humans is just a game to win. Any angels and demons we have seen who have any power just want more power. The exception is Gabriel and Beelzebub in season 2 but neither of them really care about anything but getting what they want. Where Crowely and Aziraphale do care about everyone and everything. I did notice the Metatron sucking on something and it seemed weird to me. I had not thought that it could be so he is telling the truth about ingesting things. You always point out things I have not thought about. A "travel sweet" very interesting idea. Thanks for the analysis. I always love all of your vids. Looking forward to the next one. I am glad you are feeling better.
Thank you so much! I'm healing faster than I thought I would. I had noticed the metatron sucking on something, but I hadn't really thought about why, before. So many little details! I agree, most seem to want power, probably because they haven't even experienced anything really worth wanting.
@@Sendarya I'm really glad you pointed out the Britishisms. I'm from the UK and probably wouldn't have noticed this tactic of the Metatron's, because to me he's just talking normally 😅
What you said about the clothes made me realise something: by their mentalities and their clothes, Crowley, Aziraphale and Metatron seem to be mirroring Sherlock Holmes, Watson and Moriarty. Aziraphale is a simple person, he's smart but not a genius and he's mostly defined by his kindness. Plus, he's the narrator of the Edimburgh scene, like Watson is in the novels. Crowley is a really smart guy, he understands the world very well and he's really honest and kind, despite pretending to be mean and tricky. Also, his clothing is not particularly stylish, he's got long hair and that makes him similar to Holmes. Metatron is the complete opposite. He's well-dressed, well-mannered (at least, he seems to be) but this facade hides a cold and calculating psychopath who only wants things to go according to the plan. The only question is: what does he want? Is he the voice of God, the dogmatic servant willing to do anything to follow what he thinks is the Divine Plan or is he just trying to achieve his own goals and become the Master, especially in a show filled with DW references?
Aziraphale and Crowley have stopped the Apocalypse before, it’s naive to think these years Azi and Crow have been besties hanging out has gone unnoticed, together they will bring the great plan down again, getting Azi on his side fixes all of this, he can manipulate him and break Crowley all at the same time by separating them, he’s def evil villain
That's so nice of you to say, thank you! That one, Gabriel's transformation through Jim, has been floating around in my head for a while. I think you'll see it soon!
“Captain going down with the ship” fits with the whole 40s stiff upper lip “keep calm and carry on” vibe of the Metatron’s character! And yes! A travel sweet!!
I’m back (from my other acct, lol) with another obs about the Metatron’s clothes. The motif on his tie isn’t just a quatrefoil. It’s in a square, and it has a cross inside it. I haven’t been able to find out what that could mean symbolically yet, but it’s surely not random. The other motif is a circle with a point (dot) in it, which is included in the “runes” in heaven, and is old af. Often means ‘sun’. His overcoat has a beige tartan lining too, but it seems very plain (just thin stripes). I’ve got some dodgy screen shots, which I can post on dc if I get motivated
I'm so glad that we're moving on to discussions of dogma institutions and free will. Not that i don't live the romance but this is a really important message in the book/shows and important human questions. P.S. the travel sweet idea was brilliant 😂
For some reason I'd personally like to see the Metatron going down with the sinking ship of heaven- and by extension: Heaven and Hell getting destroyed as we know it, changed from the core and all that
There is this book series written by a polish author about angels and demons and a war brewing (though admittedly much less about Earth or humans). The premise is God has died and the highest archangels (Gabriel, Michael and Raphael) - and seraphs, though in the book seraphs are madness incarnate - are trying their best not to let anyone in Heaven nor Hell find out. The thing is, none of them have been created to handle the responsibilities this entails or be capable of ruling anything so the universe is literally falling apart at seams and slowly decaying. There is of course SO much more to the series than just this but this is the point I wanted to make. It does feel like Metatron COULD be trying his darned best to cover the fact that God isn't exactly interested or present anymore and since he was not made for it, he's having a diffuculty running the ship. You know? By the way, if the book sounds interesting to you, it's Siewca Wiatru by Maja Lidia Kossakowska (and Zbieracz Burz - the further books in series). I have zero idea if there are translations but I heavily hope there are because the books are GREAT. Angels aren't soft, sweet and good, they curse, smoke, keep friendships with demons (Asmodeus is an artsy guy, lemme tell you) and the war is very rough. There are thrones, mad seraphs and many other hosts and the main character is an outcast-by-design, a dude who never asked to be what he is and belongs nowhere. Siewca Wiatru means Sower of Wind and Zbieracz Burz means Reaper of Whirlwind/Storms which is pretty much a play on the "For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.”
on the metatron's clothing: i always thought it was intended to blend in. to be fair, when i was first watching after the show dropped, i was very sleep deprived since it was early in the morning and i ended up not even recognizing it was the metatron at all until we were told by crowley --- but ive always believed thats the exact response he wanted in the first place. his clothing makes him appear extremely typical for such a high-ranking individual.
Ahhhhh! Another great analysis. I love how your brain sees all those levels of meaning in the Ordinary. Yes! The Metatron TOTALLY swiped a "travel sweet" out of Crowley's car.😋 Kinda makes you wonder how long he was lingering outside (maybe looking through the bookshop's windows?) before heading off to the coffee shop.🤔 I think God is presently giving the Metatron enough rope to hang himself - he has gotten WAY above his station (supposedly the celestial scribe to the Book of Life, along with being allowed to be in God's presence) and is drunk with power. And I agree with your earlier video - he will end up being defeated, because he has no concept of love, especially of the love between an angel and a demon.💞
Want to add: We HAVE seen matter miracled in S1-the bike rack Aziraphale provided for Anathema’s bicycle, and the new gears of the bike. Glad the injury is healing and found the analysis totally satisfying!
One thing about the Metatron that sticks out to me is that he seems... very knowledgeable and insightful about things and people. I don't know if this was meant to be his first visit to Earth, but if it was, his ability to adapt would have to be extremely impressive (contrast his visit with Muriel's complete ignorance or even Gabriel's lack of awareness after having been seen on Earth many times over the years). The Metatron shows up on Earth and immediately orders a coffee with almond syrup, and straight-up tells Nina, of course no one chooses death. So "predictable." He also seems to know what makes Aziraphale and Crowley tick, and uses those things to his advantage. He knows how to look normal and fit in with people, at least well enough at the surface level. We know angels aren't meant to be omnipotent --- otherwise, Crowley and Aziraphale wouldn't have been able to get away with their arrangement for so many years. But it makes me wonder exactly how much the Metatron has seen and how much he knows. Because for him to be as successful at manipulation as he is I think really requires him to have a certain amount of knowledge and wisdom that most angels and demons simply do not. It also requires him to have an understanding of Aziraphale and Crowley and their relationship that others do not. Aziraphale understands as of the end of season 1 that the "great plan" and God's "ineffable plan" are not necessarily the same. He knows none of the other angels actually know what God's plan is, meaning he has been able to keep his faith intact despite his ability to acknowledge Heaven's problems. And I think, because the Metatron casts himself as God's representative, Aziraphale is then tempted to give the Metatron the benefit of the doubt or at least believe he may know more of what's going on than anyone else does. I'm not convinced though that he does. I don't think God is talking to the Metatron either, and he's either just doing what he wants or what he believes God would want.
Yes, this. How much the Metatron seems to know about A & C and *exactly* how to manipulate them make me highly uncomfortable. Heck, he seems to understand human, angel, and demon nature better than the Beings who've spend 6,000 years on Earth among humans. He definitely has an agenda. I'm just hoping that with all his devious expertise he also makes the mistake of underestimating A & C in a major way that causes his downfall.
Yay glad you're getting better!! Take care 😘. Excellent analysis, I had wondered if he could possibly be actually evil. I agree with you, he thinks he is right, but could try to destroy everything with that idea. It would be great if he had a huge character arc with Aziraphale doing whatever he'll do. I giggled at the thought of him pinching one of Aziraphale's travel sweets from the Bentley!!
I've been thinking for a while that God has disappeared, maybe to create another universe? I hope she'll be back for S3 with an explanation. She certainly owes us all a big one! I love these deep dives! Please keep doing them as long as you keep thinking of topics!
I think it was a sherbet lemon - in the Good Omens universe, sherbet lemons appear in the oddest places, including nuclear reactors... and possibly Archangel's pockets? 🙃
What an interesting idea!! Yes, Adam put one in place of the nuclear reactor. Do you think Adam somehow got one to the metatron? Also, are the travel sweets in the Bentley sherbet lemons? Great idea, I love it!
The travel sweets do look quite different from the sherbet lemons of season 1 but maybe they still count as sherbet lemons? I can't be sure if it was Adam who planted one in the Metatron's pocket - although Neil and Terry came up with the title for a Good Omens book sequel - "668: The Neighbor of the Beast" - so it's plausible that Adam has a part to play in the sequel (and therefore in season 3). That would be lovely to come full circle to the end of the series with a sherbet lemon!
For me, it's really significant that Crowley is the first one to recognise the Metatron in the bookshop, but for some reason, doesn't seem to be wary of him or suspicious. He even kind if gives Aziraphale the green light to go outside for his little chat with the Metatron 'After all, this day can't get any weirder!' Yet, there is that awful look Metatron gives Crowley on his way out, that suggests some bad past history between them, supported by his later comment to Aziraphale : 'Always did want to go his own way.' I think the offer to make Crowley an angel again is false: he knew Crowley would turn it down, and I think his motive is certainly to split up Crowley and Aziraphale. So why, isn't Crowley more suspicious of him? He's seen Gabriel's trial, and how ruthless the Metatron has been, having Gabriel's memory wiped. So why is he OK with his angel going off for a private chat with the Metatron? Any thoughts? Sorry you had a nasty accident - why do these things happen? Must be ineffable. Glad you're on the mend now, and thanks for this video - as ever, full of neat insights, and excellent questions!
My personal theory about that is that Crowley knows he can't stop the Metatrash from dragging Azi off for that conversation (he is pretty close to all-powerful, after all). I think also he knew there was a good chance he and Azi wouldn't be left alone to be safe together, so Metatrash popping up wasn't a surprise :(
Thank you for another great analysis! So happy when I saw this pop up. GO still inhabits a good portion of my brain and love your theories based on tidbits that have escaped my observation. Sorry for your injury but you sound like you are pretty much ‘back.’ Take care …looking forward to even more of your theories & analyses. ❤
Hot take: I don't think the Metatron has anything in his mouth. Old people do such moves with their mouths all the time, it's like a tic that can't be controlled. I haven't noticed Derek doing it yet, but then I haven' noticed it in the episode until you pointed it out...
Damn- it just struck me upon my recent first rewatch and this video- Aziraphale and Crowley tried to do a TINY miracle by glamouring Gabriel. But they had the equivalent power of resurrecting like… 25 people. They’d be able to absolutely NUKE heaven and hell back to the dark ages, if they were not separated (that’s probably the reasoning of the Metatron. He doesn’t believe in slimy feely “love” being or staying their only goal). And the 25 lazari were BEFORE they were aware of their love for each other! Now imagine powerscaling them up to actual loving kiss!!!!
Does this mean the Metatron bullied The Bentley into handing over a travel sweet? Crowley would have quite the rant about it. Would Crowley be able to tell if the Metatron breeched the confines of his beloved vehicle? So much has to happen in s3. It will be an interesting watch for sure. I hope Mr. Gaiman is handling the stress well. ❤
I think it’s a stretch to think he might have got the sweet from the Bentley. He is a powerful Angel; he could easily create something out of nothing. But I didn’t even notice he was sucking on anything until sendarya suggested it. I have watched this so many times (it’s the one thing that makes me happy, except the last 15 minutes of S2, while coping with an emotional roller coaster I’ve been on post COVID which was such a mild case I didn’t believe I was positive!). So I very much appreciate what careful analysis happens here. I was just thinking that sweets pop up in quite a few places… like the bottom of the shaft where the nuclear reactor had been… or whatever it was that was missing. Probably all a coincidence but given the clever writing Neil has done, you never know.
The truth isn't the same as absolute clarity - in a sense, the Metatron's phrasing of the truth is the kind of phrasing you want to avoid using on a genie. While the demons in general, and, to an extent, Crowley, *know* they are evil - because, well, they're fallen, right? That's the logic! Gotta be evil, they're in Hell! - the angels very much believe they couldn't be evil, cause they're the Good Guys! How could they possibly be bad? Most on either side would find Crowley and Aziraphale's Shades of Grey *inconceivable*. Some people are so firm in their belief that they're in the right, that anything which opposes them must, therefore, be bad. Some people are so stuck in this position that, much like a certain brand of Evangelicals, they loose sight at what The Point was. The Metatron thinks he knows what he should be doing, he's very convinced of it. What I find interesting, both in the novel, S1, and the run-up to S3, is that they all seem to forget a little thing written in the Acts of the Apostles; where Jesus tells the apostles, “It is not yours to know the times or the moments, which the Father has set by his own authority." Generally, the belief is that ONLY God knows the time or the place of the Second Coming. The Apocalypse was averted. Things end up following the Ineffable Plan after all - and whatever that is, the Metatron definitely doesn't know. I hope Aziraphale is reminded of that.
Lots of food for thought. Thank you for bringing up all these ideas, as always, and glad you're on the mend. I think Metatron is THE institutional problem, along with the other archangels...all the higher ups. They don't want to get in trouble when things go pear shaped and will do whatever to put the blame on someone else. There's a lot of jockeying for power, certainly...except for poor Muriel who hasn't got a clue and is more interested in finding out about humanity and how it works.
Very late to the party, but happy to be here and enjoying everyone’s thoughts and conjectures. Derek Jacobi is a brilliant actor from the Old School and, like Michael Sheen and David Tennant, can express volumes with the subtlest of facial movements. One other writer here mentioned the Metatron’s sigh of relief as he presses the lift’s button, having Aziraphale secured inside. Too wrapped up in his rampaging thoughts and feelings, Aziraphale doesn’t notice it, but it seems to me that the Metatron wasn’t at all assured of his success. He did, indeed, manipulate Aziraphale and had to restrain his impatience with Aziraphale’s vascilation, timing his calculated comments just so and in the necessary tone of voice to get him into that lift. I fear what awaits the aspiring Aziraphale… Being new to this programme but not the actors, I appreciate and share the enthusiasm and questions this community brings to the table for discussion. Thank you for illuminating so much for me. 😇😎💜
Welcome to the fandom! This community is honestly brilliant, insightful and just a joy to be a part of. You are spot on, I agree, the Metatron was quite nervous, worried that his plan would not succeed!
Thank you, Sendarya, for the warm welcome 💜 It take a lot for this introvert to participate, and your community seems a thoughtful and trustworthy one. Of course, look at the brilliance that has brought us together! ✨✨
I don't know if it was already mentioned but there is a box of hard candies behind the bench where Azy and the Metatron sit.. Couldn't it come from there?
Great analysis! I’m interested in why the Metatron says that Aziraphale is a leader, is honest, and doesn’t just tell people what they want to hear. These are all patently false. Aziraphale is not leading anybody, and although he’s developed enough skepticism to recognize the problems with Heaven, it caused him to become a loner - he has not recruited anybody to share his view. He’s not honest - we’ve been observing his lies and evasions since the Garden of Eden, when he failed to answer a direct question from God about the sword. And he does largely tell people - at least his superiors in Heaven - what they want to hear. So why does the Metatron describe him in those terms while trying to recruit him? Is it precisely because those are false? Maybe the Metatron needs a follower in the supreme archangel position, not a leader, so he’ll do what he’s told? Perhaps he needs someone comfortable with dishonesty and telling people what they want to hear in order to be able to accomplish something needed for the Second Coming, perhaps something surreptitious?
YES! THIS! 👍 This is why I feel that Aziraphale would not trust the Metatron or his offer, because Aziraphale would have no illusions about those things, and the Metatron seems to be too clever about Az to believe those things. It still could be that t M went out of his way to make the "ingested things" truthful: maybe there was an important reason not to lie to Az in front of Muriel/in front of Crowley/in his home/in the angelic embassy?
This is a fantastic analysis. I love the list of clues. And I hadn't realised before that the Metatron echoes the Wizard of Oz as the floating head trying to manipulate people into believing in him - mind blown! I'm not sure the Metatron functions as a typical villain in the GO storyline because he isn't present for very much of each season. I think you're right that the institutions of heaven and hell are the real villains because their impact causes such fear and division.
Blather on girl! Always most enjoyable and thanks. I love that Michael based much of Aziraphale on early D Jacobi characters. I'd ride along with the marching-to-god's-plan theory but the metatron really seems to hate Crowley from a personal, not programmatic, core so I wonder what that is all about. Plus his enormous relief in being able to hit the H button with Azi in the elevator also seems personal ... I wonder where the fear and loathing comes from. I know I know...wait and see ("do you know how irritating THAT is?!?!?!") Re social media - looks like the Sheen's went to Disneyland-Paris on Michael's days off...and the Tennants to Disneyland (LA) Glad you are less gimpy. Theme traveling!
I'm not saying the following is at all likely, but I do think this would be a twist worthy of the body swap reveal at the end of s1: The Metatron ends up being a flawed hero rather than a villain. He actually wants to stop the Second Coming. He does manipulate A, but it's because he was desperate to separate A and C and get A to heaven because a) some rogue archangels or angels and demons combined have seized power and somehow killed or silenced God, which is why no one has heard from her in eons b) He really does need A's intelligence, innocence, and integrity to fight them and protect earth and c) he has some partial knowledge or suspicion (maybe a unique-to-him ability to see possible futures?) that having them both in Heaven at the same time will somehow cause rather than prevent the Second Coming. For example, maybe it's critical that Crowley is on earth to...I don't know, lead an army? Protect humans?
So sorry about your ankle. I really hope it wasn't too bad a break and putting it in plaster will sort it. My friend broke his and had to have an operation, so I know how bad it can be. Either way, I'm glad to hear it's on its way to being sorted now. ❤ So the Metatron stole the travel sweet from the Bentley, is that what you are saying? Does this possibly have a significance for Season 3? Sorry I am being thick, I can't see it. Thank you for this and all your videos, you are amazing! ❤
I was a bit afraid to say outright, but will clarify for everyone in my next video. But yeah, I started to wonder if the Metatron put A Nightingale Sings in Berkeley Square on the radio.....see, it's loony??? lol Thank you about the ankle. It was a minor break of a major bone. Healing well. :)
This is great. I hadn't noticed details like his tie and how he uses language and his manner. I think the Britishisms are more an indication of class and age. He is bonding with Aziraphale as he is of a class, type (creative, aesthetic) and age to use those expressions. I do know some young people who might use some of those expressions, but only if they're very posh, properly so. But in that older demographic it would be more common and more middle class. I do love that he might have nicked the sweet from the Bentley lol.
To paraphrase Pratchett in one of his early Diskworld books - not necessarily good, not necessarily evil but too powerful to be able to tell the difference.
Without even watching the video yes 100% he's pure freakin' evil. He orchestrated Crowley and Aziraphale's break up on purpose because he knew how desperate Aziraphale was to be accepted by the other angels and how much Crowley despised them and would never agree to return. I also think he knows they're soulmates and their love for each other makes any "magic" they do together incredibly powerful meaning they could probably stop the second coming if they worked together and concentrated on doing a miracle vs how they did things with the antichrist.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on why Aziraphale fell for praise that could not be anymore inaccurate. Leader? How often does he rely on Crowley for solutions? Honest? Isn't he the only angel we've seen that intentionally lies? "Don't just tell people what they want to hear" he's excellent at flattery. My hope in season 3 is that Jesus is going to be dispensing normal advice and words of wisdom to Aziraphale when they're touri g around during the Second Coming. Then Aziraphale will learn to be more introspective and realize for himself he loves Crowley, the two will reconcile and the pair will have to find a way to stop Judgement Day. Who knows, maybe the two will inspire Jesus to rebel against God's Ineffable Plan ('cause the criteria is too strict or something)
Please do a video on lies in good omens. I'm very interested to see an analysis add comprehensive list of all the lies Aziraphale tells well believing himself to be innocent and on the side of heaven. I have a feeling he wraps up more than Crowley. I love that as soon as you said fresh from the lift in reference to where he could have gotten a hard candy, I know exactly where this convo was going. Thank you for all the beautiful content. Even if it takes a little bit for me to keep up. I was so glad that in an earlier video you pointed out that this is a special time for a fandom, and that we will look back on it favorably in the future. It is so easy to get caught up in impatience. And that's where I find myself often, so thank you for making this in between seasons not only tolerable but special.. I agree I hope prime doesn't dump the whole season at once, what makes episodes available gradually. Yet even if they are available all at the same time I will watch on whatever schedule the fandom decides. We should do this together.
I think he's trapping Aziraphale to give him the same obliteration the Archangels were going to give Gabriel. Obviously, if Crowley responds by aligning with Hell and marching on Heaven again, Armageddon begins, Jesus returns, and the Divine Plan is fulfilled.
I was really looking forward to this video because my vision of the Metatron is/was completely different. I still don't know if I changed my mind but your video makes me think a lot. For me, the Metatron was misjudged and there are so many questions about him. First thing: what the hell is he doing on Earth? Why would he save Aziraphale? And more importantly, why would he propose Aziraphale to be the next Supreme Archangel? Azi is naive, yes but I'm sure he is not the most naive of all the angels. So why him? And the second thing that I found odd is his dark glance at Crowley. Alright, he doesn't seem to like him but why would he show that at that moment? Was it for the audience to understand his feelings about the demon, or was it a sort of a threat/warning to Crowley, or a hiding message? When no angels could guess who he was, he directly asked Crowley, and the only demon in the room was the only one who got the answer. WTF? Yes, he saw his big head a few minutes ago in Heaven but just like Muriel and Saraquiel. So why Crowley was the only one who recognized him? And Aziraphale was the second who guessed but we know that the last time he saw the Metatron was 4 years ago, while the other angels saw him at Gabriel's trial. Yes, I have many questions. But in the facts, the Metatron never did anything bad or wrong. Yes in season 1 he followed the Great Plan and thought just like the other angels (or demons) that the Great must happen to win it. But in season two, when we are looking at the facts: he saved Azirphale! And he offered the opportunity to restore Crowley to his full angelic status. And after the discussion, he says to Aziraphale "You don't have to answer now, take all the time you need". Time, Aziraphale didn't really use. As you said in your video, it could be a manipulation, yes. But I don't see where it's not a choice. He offered him an opportunity. He didn't force him to say yes, it was a conversation. He needed to be persuasive, of course. He came to Earth for that proposal. But I can't see where he threatened him. It was just a discussion. I'm not saying he didn't manipulate Azi or that he is telling the truth. I'm just saying that I can't see any prooves of any kind of pure manipulation. It can be what the Metatron really thinks. He can be honest. (I'm not saying he is). But your argument about Britishisms is really interesting. Because he really looks like Aziraphale when he uses those words and the fact that we never see him pronounce those words before means something. Thank you for your videos it's always amazing. It made me realise so many things so thank you for that! And I'm so sorry for your injury I hope it's ok now! (Sorry for my english I hope you understood what I meant)
I think Aziraphale knows he has to do whatever the Metatron asks. If he doesn't, he has the power to wipe him out of existence. You don't say know to the second- (or third-) most-powerful being in the universe.
@@DefenderOfHumanity he said "no" twice to the Metatron. He said no when he ask for a conversation, but he gave him the coffee and suddenly changed his mind (weird) and he said no first when the Metatron propose him to join Heaven. "I don't want to go back to Heaven, where do I'll get my coffee!" So I don't think he was scared to say no to the Metatron
I have always thought his clothes are a copy from Aziraphale´s, he studied what Azira weres so he can gain his favor. Of course is not an exact copy, but definetly more similiar than the rest of angels vestiments
Taking your far, far, out theory a step further into the farthest reaches of "out there": If The Metatron pilfered a travel sweet from the Bentley, is he also responsible for the Nightingale song playing?
@@Sendarya The most challenging part of theorizing for this show is that always, lurking somewhere, is an omnipotent, omniscient being who can do whatever they want, whenever they want, independent from all the known, and unknown characters, their actions and situations. So the answer to "Who played the song in the Bentley, and why?" Could be Crowley ( as a romantic plan for Aziraphale), the Bentley (as a romantic nod to Crowley and Aziraphale, or a sympathetic question to Crowley, or an attempt to comfort a devastated Crowley), Aziraphale ( as a message to Crowley, for comfort, or from devastation, or to say "We're still US!), the Metatron (because he's a cruel bastard, twisting the knife in the demon he just scowled at; or is he sympathetic to the pain, despite all evidence to the contrary?), an accidental play (from either Crowley or Aziraphale's prior radio usage in the car), or is it God (working in mysterious ways and not telling anybody anything)!
Probably, but that's why it's really, really really far out there! A kooky idea, lol. That being said, Crowley was just a teensy bit distracted by the demons, and Gabriel's revelations. Heck, maybe he was still in heaven watching the "trial" when the metatron came down, and we know that distance does disconnect Crowley from feeling Aziraphale, so probably from feeling the Bentley, too.
Metraton: THE VILLAIN So, I don't know whether it's too much to ask, but could you please make a video explaining all the themes that the series represents ?
Sorry, yes, yes, you're right. But I meant as a list, because I think it may be a good series to write about in an essay, it's a serie that one of the main themes is religion ( in my opinion ) and you need to understand what the show is about
Another lovely video that I'm super grateful for and also, not to disagree with your theory, I was wondering if this is the Metatron's first visit to Earth as you put it, how did he know how the system works? I mean to stand in line for the coffee and order and everything? Why couldn't he just miracle it and as long as we're talking about standing in line, that loaded look he throws, is it about checking what's going in the bookshop?
I think the metatron said it best himself: for one Prince of heaven to be redeemed by some ineffable bureaucracy makes for a good story. For it to happen again, eh…
I love these deep dive analyses! Has anyone done one on Michael’s odd behaviour in season 2? When Uriel is annotating Muriel’s report with comments like “the traitor” and “the demon”, Michael seems annoyed/frustrated in a different way than they were frustrated with Uriel about who’s in charge. Additionally, when Muriel says “I didn’t listen, they said it was private!” Michael has a moment of leaning back, bouncing both fists lightly on the table and *smiling* in a way that doesn’t feel like a cover to annoyance. Why would Michael care if Muriel knew they were annoyed at them? I just have trouble believing that smile was meant as some kind of patronizing tolerance of Muriel…it seems almost like relief to me.
One question on my mind is “why did god not narrate the second season?” It could entirely be because the actor could not be in it for whatever reason but I think there is something more to it… I have this feeling that maybe the events of season 2 were never supposed to happen and the second coming is not part of the plan. Maybe this is new to god and something that she has not planned? I have no idea but I could be entirely wrong 😅 What do you think?
Originally, The Metatron was described more like an angelic sock puppet than a sentient creature. When anyone hears "The Voice of God" in the Bible, it's actually The Metatron's voice, since God's ACTUAL voice would break our tiny minds (and incinerate everything in a 5 mile radius.) Since we hear God speak in Good Omens, we can assume The Metatron is closer to an interpreter than a mouthpiece. The real question is why would God use such a thing when She used to communicate directly?
That is a very valid question. Traditionally I think Christians generally say God stopped speaking to humans directly after sending Jesus to forgive our sins, and likely the timeline in Good Omens is similar. I still think it's a good question, bot IRL and in Good Omens. The show is meant to reflect real questions concerning relegion, and this is a pretty big one!
@@Sendarya | From what I've read, God stopped "directly" speaking to people when the Arc of The Covenant was lost/destroyed. The story behind this is super interesting: It was common for religions within/around Egypt to carry a sort of portable shrine/throne for their god, from which priests would hold direct counsel with their deity as they would a king. For Judaism this was The Arc, and to consolidate power its priests declared it to be singular and irreplaceable. This backfired when The Arc was destroyed/stolen in an invasion. Suddenly by their own rules, the priests couldn't communicate with their god! To counteract this, they declared their god was SO cool, it was the only god that DIDN'T require a shrine to be worshipped. Indeed, idol-worship was actually blasphemous!
@@Sendarya | This kickstarted the religion's transition to a focus on one's individual relationship with God, which was extremely unusual. Most religions focused on centralized/communal power, with only priests having a direct relationship to the divine. It's believed this more personal approach directly influenced western society's more individualistic cultural priorities, compared to the communal priorities found elsewhere.
I had not heard about your injury. But I am glad you took your time to heal and than came up with another thought-provoking video. I am glad you fought the invented ninjas of!
Though you make a good point that the Metatron shares a lot of similarities with other characters, both he and Gabriel being condescending, there is another difference. Gabriel is blunt about his motives. And he’s openly hostile. The metatron on the other hand is more sneaky about his motives. He comes across as accepting, the only one who appears to accept Aziraphale’s relationship with Crowley but, is manipulative once you analyze it. I do hope that The Metatron stays a villain. It could point out not everyone can change. And I think the Metatron would be the type who pretends to carry out God’s word but, is carrying out their own plans.
It hilarious how they simply peel back a single layer of foil to show “heavens will be done” means the destruction of all life on earth. And is therefore good.
I was so happy when I saw that you did a new video. 😊 And then I saw the titel, and I was like „of course he‘s the villain!?! 😤“ and then „but is he really 🧐“ and then „he must be 😢😩“ Great video as always. Hope you get well soon 😊🫶
Okay so for a little while I thought maybe he was originally Enoch , and maybe he wanted the war because he could not be in the part of heaven souls go to when we die. So he was there dealing with annoying angels not hearing much from God, and not able to reconnect with his family. That made me a bit sad for him and not completely hate him. Neil said he was not ever a human though, so nope he is just evil and ruins everything.
Is a "Jigger" really a Britishism? As a Briton, I thought it was a US invention: the measuring cup for creating a cocktail (or other mixing drinks) - and as such is often in use in coffee shops to measure added liquids. I suppose 'hefty jigger' may be more a British eccentricity, it sounds directly out of PG Wodehouse (Jeeves & Wooster), although he may have picked that up from New York...
They have jigger as a measurement in both the U.S. and England. It is not the same measurement in both. I looked this up at the time after watching the episode. I think Wikipedia had a good rundown on it.
@@HuntingViolets Thanks - the Wikipedia page seems it's usual good self! I think the major reason the UK & US differ in measures is because of the metric system getting rolled-out to the restaurant/bar sector in the late 1980s(? my date may be wrong). Before that my grandad definitely had a jigger that was fluid oz as per US. Plus Wiki confirms my suspicion that Jigger originates as a US term - not a Britishism - in this case. When it comes to cocktails, the UK looks to the US! ;-)
@@schubertukYes -- the U.S. keeps what used to be the English system of measurement after the UK has moved on. I do kind of prefer the pounds and feet for people at least. Easier for me to wrap my head around 6 feet tall, etc. We seem to mix it up for bottles of pop too.
6:45 It had been established that the quality of the coffee made by Nina can vary depending on her emotional state, ie. the coffee was better for the working girls if Nina was in a good mood according to the😜 seamstress. I think The Metatron orders a dash of almond syrup but Nina delivered a healthy jigger because of her emotional state; she did after all spend the night fighting demons and such.
@@Sendarya the only angel that seems submissive to all of god in Crowley except he thinks it’s for the right reasons and my next question would be who really knows the difference between good and evil? Sorry I’m rumbling but my fav part about tenant’s character is he’s an engineer, god designed him to ask questions.
@@Sendarya I don’t think tenant has met or talked to god directly and the illusion to megaton being the man behind the curtain is just too good. Again sorry for rumbling
Yes! It’s the system! In fact, the Metatron’s ability to be deceptive while telling the technical truth is a characteristic of Aziraphale. I mean every time he does it the audience comments on how terrible he is at lying, but he always misdirects the people he needs to, and the one time he outright lies, he’s actually pretty good at it. I think part of the resolution of all of this is going to be angels and demons finally “getting it.” That maybe God got something wrong in her design for angels and tried to make humans as a sort of blueprint for angels to follow in order to understand morality and free will, and Crowley has kind of got there… Aziraphale, and now Jim and Beelzebub are all close. God’s just off in the wings waiting for this idea to finally sink in.
Waited for something like this for a long time. So. What I found marvellously interesting in Metatron is how "academically" well presented is. I mean, it is like Neil took a writing book, went to the "evil characters page" and used the last 20 minutes of s2 to follow all the steps. But. Evil is just an archetype, not a role. He occupies a more complex niche, role. For Crowley, it is exactly an antagonist. It is clearly stated, plus, Crowley has 2 goals (save humanity, and live peacefully): Metatron is challenging both. Clearly stated by how they look at each other. Crowley must explain to us why he doesn't recognize anyone but Metatron when nobody recognises him. But for Aziraphale? At the moment, he is only partially an antagonist. Az's goals are: to save humanity, and change heaven. Metatron is giving him the possibility to do the second one (let's for a moment forget about the threat, which is a problem just for his relationship with Crowley). So, Aziraphale is going along with Metatron as far as he can. And until the situation breaks, as it happened with Heaven in the past, Metatron will only be partially an antagonist. Let's also consider a fact. Metatron is the only angel who can use empathy (except for Az). It is absurd, but it is the reason why he can manipulate Az: he can understand him, or at least pretend. A dark kind of empathy, let's call as such. Az has a specific role: to protect humanity from the start, and it is something given by God herself. Are we sure that Metatron will thwart this aspect, or didn't consider it? Maybe, at the end of the day, we will know Neil fooled all of us and he was indeed the good guy.
My current theory on why Aziraphale would be needed for the Second Coming would be, in part, because of his understanding of prophecies. I mean, technically speaking, the antichrist never came and had his reign, which should have started off the events to lead up to the Second Coming in the Christian mythos. What if the Book of Life was mentioned in this series because edits need to be made to it, and history, in order to find a loophole that would allow them to kind of *force* the Second Coming. I mean, if it is following the idea of Christ returning, surely the only way they would be able to choose when that happens would be to somehow force it. Else they'd just go and ask Him to do it. Right?
My jaw literally dropped at the part of "Was that a travel sweet?"😮😱 OMG if you are right about it, who knows what else the Metatron could have taken/put into Crowley's car...
You make some good points. Most of the characters have not really been exclusively good or evil. They all seem to exist in shades of gray; although, some are more dogmatic in following their "orders" than others are. I think it's reasonable to assume that the Metatron exists in the gray area as well; as an entity that is not purely evil, but certainly not purely good either (perhaps more one than the other).
Rewatching S1 (with my husband this time😊) and noticed in Ep4, that Azi speaks to the Metatron with lots of those Briticisms. “Two shakes of a lambs’ tail”, etc. (Why?) Maybe M is later “responding in kind”, believing that’s typical or comfortable for Azi, and suggesting a sort of “in group” connection which he wants to feed off.
Oh dear, I just had a terrible thought. What if an angel's memory can only be wiped if they're in heaven? That would give a very dark explanation to the Metatron's look of relief and Aziraphale's smile in the elevator. Season 3 could start with the Metatron introducing himself to Aziraphale and explaining his duties as a new angel. Aziraphale would happily commit the atrocious righteous acts in heaven's name, completely oblivious to the doubt and questioning that Crowley had inspired. Aziraphale would never remember Crowley before his fall, the look of wonder at his creations, and the utter heartbreak of it being a pointless 6000 year experiment. Thus, Aziraphale would never have any sympathy for Crowley, and given back his flaming sword, Aziraphale might even stab Crowley. Crowley, with pained breath, would lean forward for a last kiss, and forgive him. Aziraphale would then remember who he was and what he'd just done, but it was too late. It's always too late. Until Crowley's crank falls to the floor...
That is amazing and bloody heartbreaking...Thank somebody you've said it, coz now Neil can't use it! PHEW! 😂 Out of interest, what would happen when his crank hits the floor? Would time just stop? (as we saw in season 1 at the airfield) Or could it rewind time, so that Azi gets his memory back before stabbing him and Crowley doesn't die? Can you PLEASE write this as a fic? I don't think that I could do it justice. ❤
@@clarestubbs9303 Well Crowley has used the crank to control time before, once to kick off the universe, and again to restart time. It hasn't been shown to have the ability to stop or reverse time, but you never know. Perhaps at the climax when Crowley is mortally wounded, when Aziraphale gets his memory back, he must choose between saving Crowley or going against god's plan and saving humanity. Perhaps jeebus is walking to the portal, and once he crosses it, the second coming will be unstoppable. I think, in that moment, Aziraphale would finally choose Crowley. The universe project would be wrapped up and shut down. The heavens, the earth, gone. The humans all raptured. The ineffable plan is over, but they are together, in an empty void. Then Crowley reveals "You know, I still have the plans to the universe, we could crank it up again." "A giant empty universe? What would be the point..." "It doesn't have to be empty." (Crowley resurrects that couple from the coffee shop) "That was a 2 Lazeri miracle..." (Aziraphale ponders this seriously) "When we combined powers to make the tiniest possible miracle, we made a 25 Lazeri miracle by accident..." "What if... we really try for a major miracle, one with all our heart for the love of this planet and it's people... We could certainly do better than 25 Lazeri... Maybe even... say... 8.1 billion Lazeri?" "That much miraculous energy flowing through us would destroy us..." "Have faith..." (takes his hand)
I don't think he's necessarily evil, I think that "God's Plan" just isn't what the other characters think it is and the relationship between Crowley and Az is part of it. And the "happening twice makes it look like an institutional problem" I think refers to Lucifer falling from heaven in opposition to God, since he was once one of God's most trusted and favorites, but then turned on them. I think Metatron doesn't want Gabriel to Fall and go away from heaven the same way that Lucifer and the other demons did. He doesn't want more demons to be made because one exodus of angels from heaven is an event but "twice makes it look like an institutional problem". So instead he just releases Gabriel to be with Beelzebub on his own rather than letting him actually Fall, the same way that Az hasn't "Fallen" yet even though he doesn't always do exactly what he's told. Which makes you wonder what Crowley had to do to actually Fall since it seems like the angels have a lot more free will that it seems like they would, considering AZ has not fallen yet even though he has directly opposed heaven before, even though it was with good intentions and for good reason. If he can do all that and not Fall, then why did Crowley?
"Is the Metatron EVIL?"
Me, an intellectual: Yes.
@@schubertukI don't think he will be evil per se either, perhaps he thinks he is doing the right thing from God.

Maybe he can't kill or erase them for some reason, so he has to resort to break them up, since their miracle together was so powerful
@@mandysauro I've been wondering about why he hasn't tried to kill them!
But the paperworkkkkk :(
I think the Metatron’s line “for it to happen twice make it look like there is some kind of institutional problem” is foreshadowing his motivation to break up Aziraphale and Crowley.
Good point! That is rather convenient timing, isn’t it?
1: "to provide or obtain insurance"
2: "to make certain especially by taking necessary measures and precautions"
Based on the context of the comment, it's clear they were using the second definition.
The Metatron mentioning Crowley wanting to go his own way was very pointed. It also seems personal for Metatron against Crowley.
Yes! Also speaking with British lingo
Yeah, he embodies both of them, but not quite. Similar to Azis style, but darker. Dark, but not as dark as Crowley.
Honestly, it would be sweet (ha) if Crowley decided to keep the travel sweets in the Bentley even after Aziraphale changed her back, as he demanded❤
So the Bentley DID create the travel sweets just for Aziraphale??
@@reptanglian that’s been my impression. I think the Bentley really likes Aziraphale. Remember when he returned to the bookstore and the Bentley rolls forward as if to follow him?
@@lulu480Bentley definitely takes on Crowley's characteristics and preferences, doesn't she? She does things to please Aziraphale just like Crowley does it - he is however a little more reserved with it. So of course she rolls after Azi, unwilling to let him go 😂

@@ericamacs3875 yeah he said she "would have followed Aziraphale anywhere"
I also do hope to see something to do with God's absence, although I just hypothesise that she eventually grew bored of humanity and took a break to watch how it all would unfold on the sidelines
Another great theory video as always, glad to see you're back!
I don't know if the metatron even *has* motivations as such; I think of him more as an... algorithm
That's a really interesting idea. He's just doing what he's programmed to do?
Ngl the Britishism thing is what unnerved me the most..
Yes, it's very intentional on the part of the metatron, slipping them in anywhere he could!
@@Sendarya I'm really glad you pointed out the Britishisms. I'm from the UK and probably wouldn't have noticed this tactic of the Metatron's, because to me he's just talking normally 😅

A Master... at acting.
Crowley is very well dressed.
“Manipulate {Azi} and break Crowley”…. Waaaah!😢
wait i need a whole 'gabriel transforming through jim' analysis from you now. you remain my favorite GO channel, thanks for all you do!
That's so nice of you to say, thank you!
That one, Gabriel's transformation through Jim, has been floating around in my head for a while. I think you'll see it soon!
The Metratron broke Crowley and Azy up, so YES, he is very evil.
No, he's only the dramatic challenge they WILL overcome, no other option EXISTS.
For some reason I'd personally like to see the Metatron going down with the sinking ship of heaven- and by extension: Heaven and Hell getting destroyed as we know it, changed from the core and all that
Not everyone changes, and I agree, that could be satisfying to see!
I'm not finding anything in English so far. It sounds very interesting, though!
on the metatron's clothing: i always thought it was intended to blend in. to be fair, when i was first watching after the show dropped, i was very sleep deprived since it was early in the morning and i ended up not even recognizing it was the metatron at all until we were told by crowley --- but ive always believed thats the exact response he wanted in the first place. his clothing makes him appear extremely typical for such a high-ranking individual.
Am wondering why the Bentley would allow the Metatron to snitch one of Aziraphale's travel sweets...
Want to add: We HAVE seen matter miracled in S1-the bike rack Aziraphale provided for Anathema’s bicycle, and the new gears of the bike. Glad the injury is healing and found the analysis totally satisfying!
Ah! Good spot! Yeah, it's a soft magic system. It kind of does what they need it do, lol
That is an excellent point! I hadn't really thought if it, but angels like Muriel can't pull off simple deception, but the metatron sure can!
AHH FRESH OFF THE PRESSES GOMENS VIDEO YESSSSS TY 🙏🙏
YESSSSS new video!!! love it already, thank you for your work 🤍🤍🤍
Happy to oblige!
Glad you are ok. 😻 This whole line of thinking is very good, and am glad you are addressing it for us, some things I had not considered
It is, indeed, ineffable! 😅
God is looking a bit like the GOP in the US. Things are approaching a crisis and the boss buggers off.
Yes, exactly! They are a massive danger to Heaven and Hell's plans.
I think we all desperately want to see THAT kiss
@lulu480 Yes, lemon drops seem to be a sweet favorite for the show, lol.
YOU NOTICING THE SUCKING IS SO IMPRESSIVE ILY FOR POINTING THAT OUT
The Metatron gives the vibes of a fundamentalist to me.
I fear what awaits the aspiring Aziraphale…
Being new to this programme but not the actors, I appreciate and share the enthusiasm and questions this community brings to the table for discussion.
I find it funny that Aziraphale and the other angels can’t recognize Metatron’s head when it’s attached to a body-after all, the face didn’t change.
I don't know if it was already mentioned but there is a box of hard candies behind the bench where Azy and the Metatron sit.. Couldn't it come from there?
just so you know in future...pronounced.. Jack -o- bee 😊
Thank you! Names always get me, lol
I know I know...wait and see ("do you know how irritating THAT is?!?!?!")
Re social media - looks like the Sheen's went to Disneyland-Paris on Michael's days off...and the Tennants to Disneyland (LA) Glad you are less gimpy.
So the Metatron stole the travel sweet from the Bentley, is that what you are saying? Does this possibly have a significance for Season 3? Sorry I am being thick, I can't see it.
Thank you for this and all your videos, you are amazing! ❤
I was a bit afraid to say outright, but will clarify for everyone in my next video. But yeah, I started to wonder if the Metatron put A Nightingale Sings in Berkeley Square on the radio.....see, it's loony??? lol
Thank you about the ankle.
Ha! So true!
What makes you think he fell for it, and isn't going along for other reasons entirely?
Together! ❤️ Thank you
Oooo i was thinking this tbh. Intresting......
17:09 he could have grabbed some candy from that dispenser, I do like the travel sweet more than that though
Haha, true! I don't know that we see that set piece in the show, but it's there somewhere!
I think he's trapping Aziraphale to give him the same obliteration the Archangels were going to give Gabriel. Obviously, if Crowley responds by aligning with Hell and marching on Heaven again, Armageddon begins, Jesus returns, and the Divine Plan is fulfilled.
Interesting theory!
Sorry to hear about your injury - I hope your ankle recovers quickly. Take all the rest you need!
Thank you so much, it's healing well!
Hi can any explain to me, why the angels did not recognize Metatron when they literally had a meeting with him????
I think that's a great question! Something I'll have to address, as I think it's a multi-faceted answer.
@@Sendarya yeah, i been looking for that answer, still havent found one but i am intrigued of the plothole over there
I was really looking forward to this video because my vision of the Metatron is/was completely different.
Good point! He DID save Aziraphale!
I have always thought his clothes are a copy from Aziraphale´s, he studied what Azira weres so he can gain his favor. Of course is not an exact copy, but definetly more similiar than the rest of angels vestiments
Interesting, I hadn't considered that!
Taking your far, far, out theory a step further into the farthest reaches of "out there": If The Metatron pilfered a travel sweet from the Bentley, is he also responsible for the Nightingale song playing?
Yes, exactly! I was to chicken to ask it, but that is the question, isn't it??
Please, never stop doing these videos!! I love to hear your analysis
What? You mean the Metatron broke into Crowleys car? 😮 but wouldn't Crowley feel that?🤔
Probably, but that's why it's really, really really far out there!
@Sendarya ok, true .I can see that. 😊 thank you
Metraton: THE VILLAIN
So, I don't know whether it's too much to ask, but could you please make a video explaining all the themes that the series represents ?
Isn't that what I'm doing? lol Slowly....
Do you mean to just list the themes? Because it takes a long time to explore each one.
Well, I think he's about to have it happen a third time, lol
Interesting observations about Michael! I'll have to add that to my list.
'Jack-obi'
Oh em gee.. you got to the point of discussing what was the Metatron sucking on in line and I said to myself 'travel sweet'. Little did I know! 😄
One question on my mind is “why did god not narrate the second season?”
It could entirely be because the actor could not be in it for whatever reason but I think there is something more to it…
I have this feeling that maybe the events of season 2 were never supposed to happen and the second coming is not part of the plan. Maybe this is new to god and something that she has not planned? I have no idea but I could be entirely wrong 😅
What do you think?
Interesting idea! Thank you for sharing that.
I do intend to explore what's up with God in season 2 very soon, not next week but the following one
I like you theories so much.
Originally, The Metatron was described more like an angelic sock puppet than a sentient creature. When anyone hears "The Voice of God" in the Bible, it's actually The Metatron's voice, since God's ACTUAL voice would break our tiny minds (and incinerate everything in a 5 mile radius.)
Since we hear God speak in Good Omens, we can assume The Metatron is closer to an interpreter than a mouthpiece.
The story behind this is super interesting:
It was common for religions within/around Egypt to carry a sort of portable shrine/throne for their god, from which priests would hold direct counsel with their deity as they would a king.
He is technically truthful...the best kind of truthful
So so good to see another analysis video, I've really missed them! Thank you 😊
I was so happy when I saw that you did a new video. 😊
And then I saw the titel, and I was like „of course he‘s the villain!?! 😤“ and then „but is he really 🧐“ and then „he must be 😢😩“
Great video as always. Hope you get well soon 😊🫶
I'm so excited that i get to watch one of your vids on my birthday - it's the perfect gift, haha! ^^ I wish you a wonderful weekend!!
Interesting idea about the coffee, that I hadn't heard before!
Anyone who talks for god would have the biggest ego ever
Ha yes! Oh, if only some humans understood that IRL.
I can't wait for season 3 😭😭😭
This video is very thorough and very impressive
Thank you!
Maybe villain is the wrong term, but he's certainly an antagonist.
Right?
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Thank you so much! It's healing really well so far. It'll just take time, hopefully
My jaw literally dropped at the part of "Was that a travel sweet?"😮😱 OMG if you are right about it, who knows what else the Metatron could have taken/put into Crowley's car...
Exactly! What could this mean?!?
Agreed. This is one of the many trucks the metatron uses to manipulate Aziraphale. Well spotted!
Oh dear indeed.😮😢
That is amazing and bloody heartbreaking...Thank somebody you've said it, coz now Neil can't use it! PHEW! 😂
Out of interest, what would happen when his crank hits the floor? Would time just stop? (as we saw in season 1 at the airfield) Or could it rewind time, so that Azi gets his memory back before stabbing him and Crowley doesn't die?
Can you PLEASE write this as a fic? I don't think that I could do it justice. ❤
It is one of the theories about the final smile. Is it a memory wipe taking effect?
Neil can use any idea, if he's never read it, lol
Then Crowley reveals "You know, I still have the plans to the universe, we could crank it up again."
"A giant empty universe? What would be the point..."
"It doesn't have to be empty." (Crowley resurrects that couple from the coffee shop)
"That was a 2 Lazeri miracle..." (Aziraphale ponders this seriously)
"When we combined powers to make the tiniest possible miracle, we made a 25 Lazeri miracle by accident..."
"What if... we really try for a major miracle, one with all our heart for the love of this planet and it's people... We could certainly do better than 25 Lazeri... Maybe even... say... 8.1 billion Lazeri?"
"That much miraculous energy flowing through us would destroy us..."
"Have faith..." (takes his hand)
@@hotlavatubethis is a fanfic i NEED TO READ!
Hope he stays an antagonist but picks up a habit of eating travel sweets
A villain with a sweet tooth? Earthly delights seem to have an influence on occult beings.
I am really glad you and the dresser are ok lmao
Thank you 😊
