@@manitoba-op4jx The solenoid is uncommon to be used in profit concerning applications due to such limitations, can't argue that. Just a heads up! If you wanted to make it work MUCH better, simply increase the number of turns of magnet wire. Double the turns = double the magnetic field. 4X the number of turns = 4X the magnetic field. It doesn't have to be super neat, just wind layer over layer of wire. if you want to keep it neater, wrap the coil of wire with tape after each layer. The limiting factor is the voltage/resistance of the wire, but you have a long way to go before you hit that limit.
Great idea with the aerospace grade carbon fibre rollers! It definitely would have been the weak point of the machine otherwise. I just cannot think of anything better suited for this application!
A perfect justification for not using a stepper motor. Resonance induced chemistry resulting in petroleum. Lol. Banging out the hits as usual. Can't wait for the next one.
Man screw all these negative comments, I thought this was one of your most fun videos... the sheer determination and problem solving is admirable, I get why you did it
You could also increase the turns of your coils to increase the force that is applied on the magnets and you could also take a thicker wire to dissipate the heat better than thin wire.
For future motor experiments, glass syringes might be a good choice, as glass melts at a much higher temperature and would require less cooling to run optimally.

Good job. I build a solenoide engine for a school project and After some testing we conclud that the benefit of inverting the polarity of the coil isn't worth the complessity of adding an h bridge. Also we used an optical sensor and Without including a dead zone and It work very well and also the polarity of the magnet on the piston Is a Major factor on the torque of the motor, because if the fields have opposite polarity, they subtract each other and there Is almost no torque at the output. We optimized a single piston piston engine that reached 1300rpm at 10A 15v. We were planning a 4 opposite cilinder engine but the covid stopped the project and we didn't finish it
The peanut butter song has popped into my head at random times over the last 2 years, but I could never remember where it came from. My itch has been satisfied, and I can finally play this song for others when it gets stuck in my head and I need to share the madness. It's almost impossible to look up when you forget the context. I just typed in peanut butter 7 times followed by "yeah" and could never find anything.
you should have used the serial plotter to show the angle instead of the serial monitor, because it would graph it nicely and show the oscilating angles.
Your description of a solenoid "deadzone" is be accurate for a ferromagnetic core. But if you're using a permanent magnet (below saturation) then there is no deadzone. The difference is that with a permanent magnet, the direction of its field is constant, but with an iron slug, the direction of its field is dependent on the direction of the exciting field. "Longstroke" looks cooler though :P
Solenoids have like infinite resistance when they’re off, then they act like a dead short a few ms after they’re energized. I think way more wraps on the solenoid would have helped a lot. Higher force , higher resistance, and less current.
