      22 is old man territory, I was 21 when I joined and I didn't think I was old, but there is a clear difference in maturity. Sure, there were guys I considered old, but you are lumped into that group and the maturity and respect sure helps out during your whole career.

    I'm 25 and I ship out in a little over 2 weeks to USMC Basic. I'm in pretty much the same exact boat that you spoke about in the video. I'm currently making really good money and in a well-respected position where I work but, after working for a while and getting to where I'm living very comfortably I just wanted more.
    I enlisted because I want the adventure, the high amount of challenge, and overall I just want to live like I'm 25 and not 80 years old just trying to make it to tomorrow. I had to do this because I knew that if I didn't do it now, one day I'd be too old to enlist and from that day forward I'd be in deep regret. I had always wanted to join the military, and from the time I knew the difference between the Army and the USMC I had always wanted to become a Marine.
    At 17 my father died, and to simplify and shorten the story I decided to stay home with family and ended up working/going to school. Over the years I found myself getting more and more unmotivated. I simply wasn't being challenged enough, and I knew the domesticated, low pressure life just wasn't for me, at least not during this period in my life.
    I have no girlfriend right now, and no kids. The only financial obligation I have is to my car, which I'll be selling before I leave anyway. There was LITERALLY nothing stopping me from taking that leap besides myself.
    Not to sound morbid, but this year I've been thinking quite a lot about life, death, and time. Money isn't enough. As I said earlier in this mini-novel I make really good money right now. However I work 6 to 7 days a week and spend most of that time doing something that makes me fall asleep standing up. I'd rather make minimum wage doing something that sets my soul on fire than go on "living" this way.
    If you're in a similar position and are thinking about taking that first step to see a recruiter, I urge you to DO IT. Take it from me, once you set foot in that recruiters office and it starts to get more and more real, you'll see that this is going to be the best decision you've ever made in your life. Or it won't be. But the thing is, you're still young as hell in the grand scheme of things, and what's worse? Spending a few years hardening tf up and becoming the man your family is going need, and saving up a few dollars plus gaining a hell of a lot of life experience? Or, having tremendous amounts of deep regret, self doubt, and wondering how things could've been had you chose to go out and live?

    Just turned 28. Contemplating the millitary because my engineering degree hasn't really taken me anywhere except dead end technician jobs. Meanwhile my brother who finished serving the millitary is killing it and making bank and has an easier time getting jobs just for being former millitary. I just am lost now, i thought by 28 I would at least be married and have a kid and some money saved up. Now this corona virus pretty much ruined my plans for 2020 and my company is downsizing. Sigh. I need to think about this more.

I'm 27 and decided to challenge myself mentally because I've always felt I could achieve more than just a hard day of good work. Not only did I join at 36 last year, I joined the ROTP program, so I’m back at school full time. Married to a service member for 12 years, two kids. I finished BMOQ this July and I won’t even be trade qualified until mid-2023. It can work just fine as long as you have the right support system set up and you make the military work for YOU! Learn how to write your memos and make requests to your CoC so they take you seriously. Be the squeaky wheel when you have questions. Every email you send brings your paperwork back to the top of the pile on SOMEONE’s desk! lol. Overall, just remember every minute spent doing meaningless tasks is pensionable time.

      You don’t stop your life at 79 years old. This is a weakness of this society, they don’t ask enough from people and they keep a steady job with few cultures. You only do two degrees and these are terrific on a cv. I think financial maths and computer science with ten years experience that doesn’t make me useless. My colleague is studying biology after medicine. I workout two years before to have good physical skills. Also, I am overweight with 15% fat. They need a new virgin wife, young kids instead of teenagers, a new house, a new car and others. However, the only thing is fresh food and good health.

    I joined the army at 27 years old. Coming in as an older person. Is definitely going to help make you stand out. You will be more mature and have a lot more life experience then you Your peers. One thing you will find annoying is in the military age doesn’t mean anything. What matters is the rank on the persons chest. With that being said. You can be a 30 year old private. And have a 21 year old sgt telling you what to do. Making you do push-ups or trying to give you advice . And you may find it annoying,I know I did. Like my man said in this video because a lot of the other guys are a lot younger then you and immature there going to be messing up a lot and you will find yourself paying for there mistakes along with them. Being older as a lower enlisted soldier. Some pros I have had about it. Is that a lot of the higher ranking members won’t mess with you as much because of your age. They might even show you a lil more respect because of it. But it still doesn’t mean that you won’t be treated like a lower enlisted soldier if that makes sense. Coming into the military I was 27 years old married with 3 daughters. It has been really tough being away from them. Especially when I’ve been overseas for 9 months and I found out that my whole company got extended 3 more months. It can be stressful! But at the end of the day just don’t let the stress your going through cloud your mind from remembering the reasons why you joined. It has done me and my family more good then bad that’s for sure.

    Hi there mate , i hope you're still reading comments , in my case , im not American , im Spanish , i went through a lot of shit when i was 17-18 (im 23 now), my original plan was joining my country's army , life got in between and i had to dismiss that option , and kept studying. Im an electro mechanic technician now(didn't like it at all , although i do like it as a hobby) , and recently started a community college kind of thing to become a web developer , but the thought keeps coming to my mind , i do honestly feel like i'm not living my life , i'm always thinking about what if i had joined the military at 18 , i feel like i fucked up and feel lost as hell.
    I'm a little overweight , i don't even have a driver's license , and i've always been afraid about the "what if i fuck up with this decission" im starting to get fit , because i've thought about joining the army next year(still 4 months left) , the only thing that still keeps me thinking about it is "what im gonna do once im in" , i mean i like the military , but i'm afraid of fucking up and ending homeless or something like that. ( I don't exactly know how it is in the USA , but in Spain is so hard to get a decent job without a college degree , joining the army would mean not studying..)
    Dunno man , if you could give me some advice it would be cool. Thank you.

    I'm 36, I have a decent job that pays well for a single guy. I have plenty of money saved off to the side. I come from a military background (Both Grandfathers, my Father 24yrs of service, and two brother all in the military, also aunts and uncles who were in as well). So when I say I come from a military family...I really come from a military family. The guys I work with...90% of them were all prior service or still in the reserves or guard. I always wanted to join...I just want to scratch that itch I've has since I was a kid. Like I said, I have a good job that supports me well. But I don't want to feel like I'm throwing away everything I worked so long for. I want to join the guard which would allow me to keep my current job. I'm 33 now. Joining this September. I'm scared & worried about walking into a nightmare here, simply because I was so used to my life the way it was. Too bad the way it was before doing this kinda sucked.
    I have a Bachelors in IT and want to do data entry / security of data and/or computer repairs and diagnostics. Problem is I live in SC - not a lot of opportunities unless you have experience already. Worse still, I got college debt and live with family doing cooking jobs (that don't pay enough for me to take care of myself like they should have.) before I was crazy enough to finally go thru this.
    I'm scared and worried. If there was another way, I would have done it. Too bad the Army may be my best chance of paying down my college debt and finding work in what I WANT TO DO in my IT career for real.
    Life always gotta be messing with me. Being a soldier for awhile is probably my only escape for awhile, hard and scary as that is to admit, too...

      I graduated during COVID so I really had it hard after high school. I didn’t have any direction or way to navigate and help myself really look at things.

    Does experience in the Marine Corps change you at all? Or at least give you some discipline and structure that you could use in the civilian world? I just turned 28 and have been thinking about it for the last 5 months or so. I’m set on Marines but don’t know whether I should do active duty or reserves. I didn’t know much about the military before I started looking into it in recent months. Any help would be appreciated.

    • @BryanFerra
      @BryanFerra  5 років тому +3

      breakingdan I think at that age reserves would be the way to go. The corps will change things for the time being but you’ll go back to your ways very quick especially if you go reserves. I went because I wanted more discipline and to do great things. I feel like I got that but what you do with it is up to you.

    • @breakingdan
      @breakingdan 5 років тому

      I’m looking to join for similar reasons. As I said, I didn’t know about the military when I was younger but had I been aware of the opportunities I would have done it long before. I probably could’ve used the discipline and structure to make better decisions. What gave me the push to actually do it now is the fact that the age cutoff is 29 for reserves so I can still make it. I did meet with an Army recruiter two months ago just to see the difference in the branches and culture. While I liked it fine and was impressed with the recruiter, there’s still something about the Marines that makes joining the military more exciting. I like how prideful each Marine is about earning the title. However, I still haven’t met with a Marine recruiter. In the meantime, I’ve been trying to really think it through and get in shape. My running isn’t great, but slowly getting better. How much do you run in boot camp? Pull-ups are a piece of cake; I’m at about 18-20 in one go, plus I do plenty of weight training every week. What would be a good MOS for reserves?

    For the marines average is like 17-19. I agree that for the Marines joining at anytbing after even 21 is considered “old” but just for the Marines and also depends when you go boot camp. Summer had old the younger kids out of hs. Friends in the army and navy said the age range is all different.

      Negative, someone is telling you BS. The "service or jail" sentence ended in the late 1960's because losers were avoiding jail and entering. Now, state judges have no say in who Uncle Sam selects. Felons are automatically DQ. With everyone else, all probation, community service, classes, and fines must absolutely be completed before they look at you.

    People always say about if you have a family don’t join because you will be send away ... so you rather stay on a dead end job that pays you shit for 12 to 10 hours a day to provide for your family and pay bills till you die ? You’ll be unhappy ,working long hours everyday you won’t be able to spend to much time with your family working for a company that doesn’t give you a chance to grow and pays you the minimum without benefits ..best go to the army , you might be send away sometimes but at least you doing something that you proud of and you can grow and rebuild your self if you take the chances the army gives you I rather sacrifice be send away and miss some birthdays and Christmas that stay on dead end job forever doing the same shift year after year because at the end of the day just because you get to see your family everyday doesn’t meant they’ll appreciate or you’ll be happy do what you love first invest in your self!!!

      At the same time you still would have to think about your dependents. If you are older and have dependents, it might be best to join the national guard or reserves. If you want active duty, it might be a much better idea to join the air force instead of the army.
      You'd be there for your dependents more with the AF instead of the army because in the army you constantly will have to be out in the field for several weeks or months at a time whereas AF doesn't go to the field. The army also has the longest deployments of all the branches at 9-12 months.
      You'd even have to look at things like PT taking away your time with your dependents. More often than not, the AF lets its people do PT on their own, whereas the army insists everyone be away for an hour and a half to two hours of group PT every morning, which takes away even more of soldiers time.
      Not telling anyone who's older with dependents to not join the military or the army, but just remember how much extra difficult things will be for your dependents if you do join the army whereas the AF would be a better alternative for dependents.
