- Let's change the direction of your fly reel's retrieve! Right-handed with a left-handed reel (or vice versa)? No worries! We've got the fix. In this video, learn how to change the direction of your reel's retrieve. It's a really simple process and you'll be good to go in only a few minutes. There are all different types of fly fishing reels out there, but hopefully, this video shows you a couple different types that will help you get your reel set up the way you want it.
The reels used in this video are White River Intruder fly reels (7/8 weight and 2/3 weight).

Great vide! I just bought a hawkridge colorado 9ft 6 7weight rod with 7/8 weight reel online. When i opened it I found set up for left hand. Thanks to your video I now can use it right handed 👍👌 Very cleer instructions for a quick and easy fix 👍
Awesome! Glad you found the video useful and easy to follow.
Thanks so much, I've done this a few times, but so infrequently that it's hard to remember the details. Thanks again friend!
You’re welcome. Anytime.
Thank you bro!

Thank you for this tutorial. It helped me out quite a bit.
Glad to hear it!
Works on proberos reels from Aliexpress. Thanx a million!
You’re welcome
You might want to include that they will have to respool the line and backing
Yes that’s a good point. Will have to do that sometime in the future.
@@ShowMetheHawgs Did you make a video about it I’ll watch it if you did you just gotta tell me you did and then I watch it

This helped a ton! I just got my first fly reel as a bday present, and it was the wrong handedness for me (I'm a lefty and prefer to keep the rod in my left hand at all times). This reel is a bit of a hybrid between the two you showed, a White River HCII, with a nut that has a wire inside it that I had to flip over held in place with a C ring.
The hardest part was they had it pre-spooled, so I had to strip it and wind it the other way. By hand. Without any tools to level wind it. That I don't recommend.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks man you're a legend
Wow. That is some high praise. I appreciate it!
Thank you for your help. much appreciated.
You’re welcome
Yo so helpful thank you. I had the same reel!

Thank you! Fish on!
You’re welcome!
Thanks! Wasn't sure how this is done.

Hexagonal gear? Looks like a one way roller bearing
Wire piece? Looks like a retaining clip
Very useful video for a novice like myself! I have reassembled my fly feel so that it is now let handed, however, the fly line is now backwards so when I reel in the line extends rather than retracts. Is there a way to flip the line around rather than pulling all the line out and having to wrap it back up? As I already have line on there (use the other way round) Thanks again!
Unfortunately, I think you’ll have to take the line off but one quick, neat way I’ve used to take line off the reel is using a power drill and an old line spool. I run a drill bit through the old spool and use the drill to pull the fly line off the reel onto the old spool. Then I’ll just reel the line back into the fly reel the way I like. I hope that helps.
Anyone know of a youtube video that specifically illustrates the retrieve direction switch for the Orvis Encounter II ?
I almost thought I bought it wrong
I just turned my reel around 180 degrees. It's more comfortable to crank in that direction anyway.
Gotta do what works best for you
The bearing doesn't fit if I flip it around anyway. One edge of it is round and won't fit in the hex-shaped housing.
Title should state the brand of reel you’re working with👍👍
Can I do this with fly line and backing already on?
Yes, you can. I failed to mention this in the video (sorry) but when switching retrieves, unravel your fly line and backing on something like a coffee can while keeping your backing tied to the spool. Switch the retrieve and wind the line back onto the spool.
Is the inside of your fly reel supposed to be super oily
Yes. There should be grease inside the reel.
My finger is black now
What about the line ?
Doesn't it have to be pulled off and reeled back on the other direction?
Yes. Wrap the line around an empty spool or a coffee can as you’re taking off the reel. Once it’s off, put it back on the reel in the opposite direction. Sorry. Probably should’ve mentioned that in the video.
Don’t you have to change the direction of the line
I'd be curious to see how many anglers reel with which hand. I'd think 90% of fisherman reel with their left hand and they are right handed and would cast with their right. And yet it must be less than 90% since a lot of reel makers seem to set it up for the other way.
I'm left handed but reel and throw with my right hand. Pretty wierd!
