  • Wow Kansas City! Let us just start by saying that the people here are reason enough to visit. And it's because of the incredibly kind locals, that we were able to put this video together, so thank you! 💞
We had no expectations with this place. We spent 3 weeks house sitting and we didn't plan much because of all the work we had to catch up with, but thanks to everyone we met, we adventured out there to try some of the most popular local recommendations. And honestly guys, we barely scratched the surface. Kansas City has so much to offer and we hope to be back to make a proper video about everything there is to do in Kansas City, not just the food.
We hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to eat something before you watch ;)
Thanks so much for being here and if you have any questions or recommendations, please leave them in the comments.
See you in the next video!
    XO,
    Aimara & Gordon

Burnt ends are most definitely NOT the leftovers. They're cut from the fattier end of the brisket called the point. They're usually then then thrown in some sauce and smoked a little more which makes them extra delicious. When I was in school the Oklahoma Joe's (in the gas station) was on my way to and from school. The line would form before they opened and it was fantastic. Didn't realize how lucky I was to have been able to eat there so much.

    • @TareUhhhhhh2

Originally they were the leftovers and actually used to be thrown out I think. Arthur Bryant’s was the first place that started serving them and I think they just gave it away because it was the “waste” part of the meat. We’ve come such a long way in recognizing that it’s the best part 🤤

I’m a Kansas City local, and chili with cinnamon rolls is more a Midwest thing than specifically KC. I’ve lived here my whole life and hadn’t heard of it until my wife-who is from a small town in Kansas-introduced me to it. Essentially, you put a cinnamon roll in a bowl and then cover it in chili to eat. It sounds SUPER weird, but it’s surprisingly good with the combination of sweet and savory.

I’m from Overland Park and had never heard of this until last year. It’s possible we had this meal in elementary school lunchrooms, but I don’t remember it being “a thing” with anyone. When someone at work said they ate them together we all thought it was weird. Tried it. Still weird. And no consensus as to whether you actually eat them *together* of whether the cinnamon roll is a side or dessert.

Definitely a thing from school lunches in the KC area, and likely the broader Midwest region. If chili was the main entree, there would be a huge cinnamon roll to go along with it. That said, I've never done anything weird like pour chili on the cinnamon roll, or dip the cinnamon roll in the chili, but for whatever reason they always went together. Outside of school lunches growing up, I can't remember seeing that combo on a menu anywhere in KC.

    1. I have lived in KC my whole life but have never heard the term “cheese slipper” 😅

The original cheese slippers always came hot because they would only bake on weekends and would always sell out before the slippers had cooled off.
Also burnt ends used to be more burnt. But they got popular than the sliced brisket, so now it's more just a way another way to serve the brisket with just a little extra char and gristle/fat. Still good but if you want something more like the original you have to know where to go.

If you return to KC, you’ll have a thousand more barbecue recs to seek out, but the other low-key meal KC is known for for is tacos! We have no fewer than 150 local Mexican restaurants in the metro. Many small, mom-and-pop shops specializing in street tacos and other foods from their hometown. Mostly Jalisco, Michoacan, and chihuahua. Check out the KCK Taco Trail. Visit KCK tourism has a list of over 50 street taco shops on the KS side alone. My faves are Tacos el Tio and GG’s Barbacoa Cafe.

Crossroads is more artsy but on the weekends during the day everyone goes to West Bottoms for antiques and food or just sleeping in from the nightlife at Power and Light! You guys should defintely try to experience a First Friday! If you like ice cream fairway creamery is by a local chocolatier if I recall and they sell his chocolates there. I had cinnamon rolls and chili at my school as a kid I think its a midwest thing. The cheese slipper originally was from a small hearth bakery called Fevere which Messenger has a bakery called Ibis that took it's place at one time but's no longer there. However, I don't feel the cheese slipper quality is as good as Fevere once was.
