Great job restoring this. These 1940's era Westinghouse are one of my favorite styles and they last forever.

I agree! And this fan is a testament to that! It was totally disgusting and filled with sand. But with a little love, she's good as new!

Thank you so much for this video. I’ve watched all three parts/videos. I was originally just looking on how to oil the bearings on my Poweraire and was throughly entertained with the Throat Clearing Counter. Then when you were putting lube into the gearbox and the video was highlighted with passing gas sounds, you had me rolling on the floor! 😂 I felt like I was hanging out with a friend one afternoon watching him restore a fan. The fan turned out beautiful! Thanks again! Oh, also love the Buc-ees sticker on your tool chest! Anyone who loves Buc ee is a friend of mine!

First of all... Great editing, enjoyable commentary, fantastic throat clearing and solid camera work. The three part series was easy and fun to watch. Huge thanks for keeping me entertained for over an hour all free to me!
I used to be a high speed only guy. When a speed coil looked questionable, I would just bypass it and run on high when plugged in to the wall. I thought it was not safe to leave 50+ year old electric devices plugged in all the time. With no switch (bypassed) I couldn't forget to unplug an always on fan and no coil shorting worries either. It seemed a double win. Flash forward to now.
I will do whatever I can to save the coil. I hate liquid electric tape but will use it to stabilize fraying leads. I'll also varnish with several thick coats and friction tape where needed. It does not need to look factory or pristine inside, just needs to be safe and future repairable.
Here is why I now save and use the coil, it's sacrificial. Speed coils are way easier to repair than a full motor rewind. The coil "takes stress" or lowers the voltage for the motor. The more the coil slows the motor, the lower the voltage the motor sees and the more the speed coil works. I like shifting some of the stress away from the motor running it at a lower power. Also, these Power Aire fans are beasts, they sometimes need a low speed!
To solve the plugged in and switched off issue... I have a plug splitter. A fan goes in one side and an always on lamp in the other. If my garage is glowing after dark, I left a fan plugged in again!
I modified an automotive style fuse holder and run my nice fans on a 2amp fuse. Between the speed coil and fuse, I feel very safe running the fans on medium and especially low. The motor windings see little stress (magnetic flux and heat) and fuses mean if the speed coil melts down not much will happen and the motor will likely be safe.
Thank you for reading me essay on fan rambling.

Wow! Great comment! And thanks for the kind words! I think you may have changed my mind about always running it in high speed! I guess if something has to go, better it be the speed coil than the stator!

It was a gamble, but it paid off. I made sure to reduce my air pressure on my regulator.

Know where you can get a "speed coil" replacement? Can't find anything like it by googling. The cloth wrapping on my wires is crumbling apart. Might just eliminate it. Thanks for the step-by-step.

Nice job,but why spray paint such an old fan? I have here on my channel a 1930 GEC fan,it has abit of rust on it,next month i am only going to buy rust deoxidene to take out the little bit of rust on it,i have put some wd40 on it for in the mean time so that the rust will not spread,i think maybe it wont because its only 2 weeks before next month,i think to keep an old item with its original factory paimt it better than to spray paint it,but the job you have done is very nice.

Very rarely do I keep the original paint on my fan restorations. A lot of people like the aged look and "patina" that old fans have. And that's totally OK! As long as it's working as designed, then I'm all for it!
Rattle cans have really come long way in quality. And even though they can't get the same look as the "Japan" finish that some fans came with, they can get pretty dang close!

Another question, how did you tap out the studs on the gearbox? my 16” has them as well and I thought the screws on the front were how you take it apart. But sure enough when I took the back off it has those nuts and bolts lining right up with those flathead screws that will not unscrew.

They give the appearance that they're threaded the whole way... but they're not. Start off by using a hammer and punch. My punch tapers wide, the further down it goes. So I had to switch to using a large carpenter nail, with the tip cut flat. I describe it in my video. Let me get the exact time for you...

How do you remove the badge from the cage?

    • @FansOfThePast
      @FansOfThePast  Рік тому +1

The badge is very brittle after 80+ years. What you need to do is get a heat gun, and focus the heat on the inside "clips" of the plastic badge. The plastic will loosen up some and should come off without much prying.
