      Hi Tim, thanks for checking out the video. The bread is very much a personal choice certainly. I’m equally happy with white bread, as long as it’s proper bakers bread, from a nice crusty loaf. Winds me up when you order a ploughman’s and you get given one of those part baked baguettes warmed up that’s for sure!

      Thanks buddy, certainly whetted my appetite, I demolished it! I know a lot of people think of a ploughmans as a bit boring, just some bread, cheese and a bit of salad. But done properly it's an absolute dream... as for what's next, could be pies, could be burgers, or maybe a trip into Weymouth on the weekend for some seaside fare 😀

    Another lovely homemade Ploughman's. Beautiful. The only thing I would add would be a boiled egg of some description; either scotch egg or pickled. Sometimes I combine the pork pie and egg by buying a nice thick slice of gala pie.

      @GreenoEats It was recommended to me to try the Ploughman's lunch when I visit Hay-on-Wye this May. Is the Ploughman's enjoyed by all of the UK or is it strictly an English meal? Perhaps because of Hay-on-Wye's proximity to England it's served there, too?

    You should do a déjeuner de laboureur. You can include the same elements, but with a French twist (baguette, Camembert, cidre). The pate would then be a viable addition. I love pate, but I'm not convinced it belongs on a British Ploughman's Lunch. Up the Brexit 🥴

    British cheddar indeed…
    Dig into the proper stuff. Give it a back story. You don’t live a million miles from Cheddar. Coastal from Ford Farm is your local go to, then there’s Barbers, Wookey, etc.
    Get some high end product mentioned. Pork pie is grey. Also those little ones are called squealers. Branston is factory junk. Try Tracklements from Wiltshire. Think even Waitrose sell it.
    Pickling liquor determines the sweetness, not onion vs shallot.
    I probably have already said enough… 😂
    Production is good though! 👍

    Looks tasty. I am unfortunately lactose free, but there are some decent(ish) lactose-free cheeses out there; so it's not all bad!
    That bread looked sooo good, and loved the idea of a pate with this (I'd agree a course pate would have been even better!).
    I would perhaps go for a more vinegary coleslaw rather than the creamy one you chose. Great episode though!

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  2 роки тому

      I tried a couple of vegan cheeses not so long ago, there was one with chilli which actually was pretty good on a burger.
      Reason I went with a creamy coleslaw was I already had pickled shallot and Branston on there, so though it added a slightly different dimension. Loads of individual food combinations I enjoyed there, pate and tomato, pork pie and pickle, cheese and coleslaw... every bite was a flavour bomb! The bread was indeed amazing.
      Thanks for taking the time to check the video, and for the positive feedback 😀

    It's a bit of a stretch to call a Ploughman's Lunch VERY traditional since it was only invented by the British cheese industry just after the WW2 to increase cheese sales. Nonetheless, it is an excellent lunch and, of course, you can make all kinds of adjustments to suit your taste or even dietary needs.

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  Рік тому +2

      While it is certainly true that the cheese industry had a big push in the 50s to popularise the ploughman’s lunch, it’s also the case that a plate of cheese, bread and onion was a popular alehouse meal stretching back over many centuries, especially so down south where I live. Of course, it’s a lot more jazzed up these days. It’s a fab meal, especially on a summers day I think, and you’re right, it’s good that you can exercise some flexibility around the ingredients to suit peoples wants and needs. Thanks for watching 😀

      @@GreenoEats Bread, cheese and onion and frequently beer (probably "small" beer) is the original "packed lunch" and has indeed been around for centuries but the name Ploughman's Lunch is modern, as is the addition of salad. Just me being picky. I love them in general, although some of the modern versions have, in my opinion, got a bit silly.
