Formally trained in architecture here. 25 years in the business. Stereotomy has always fascinated me. However, I can do without the mystique surrounding it. This mysticism is French Enlightenment, where groups create cults. The study of this topic should be public and universal in orientation not surrounded by the romance of special knowledge.
Formally trained in architecture here, 23 years in the biz. I am equally skeptical about unchecked mysticism, but one has to acknowledge that if we wish to develop a building culture that can endure for 1000+ years, the narratives surrounding the education would naturally want to intertwine deeply within a culture. Originally this education was comingled within economically competing institutions, so protecting and gating this knowledge was incentivized. Today those economic incentives are minimized and the education is relatively ungated. However, we'd hope that this knowledge could endure any changing economics or governing systems, and one of the best ways to ensure that might be to imbue such knowledge with powerful narratives that increase the likelihood that motivated persons will safeguard that knowledge through any provocation.
Robin Evans wrote extensively on this subject in his book The Projective Cast. It looks at this subject and more from an architectural perspective.

Just pointing out that knowledge or expertise that is insular tends to run to dead end.

@@AlvinLeong-me3iu the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Chinese definitely had their own version of stereotomy. L'trait is the specific 'language' of construction in the French tradition, which has origins in Greece/Egypt. The language of construction is/should be tethered to history as much as our spoken language is.

@@ReneSalasDesign it’ definitly is a very large topic thank you for taking the effort to explain it. I‘m currently doing my master in joinery in germany which is difficult enough, but compared to the art du traits its still very basic.
looks curiously similar to the fractal, striped, and checkerboard structures seen under the influence of DMT. almost like this technology derives from, erm, metaphysical experiences....
Perhaps we can think of l'trait and stereotomy as a sort of cartography of our geometric imagination.

This is Masonry at its best. My Dad was a Mason, and this is exactly what he would teach and describe.
Free Masonry and Compagnons share a common origin and split over time (hence the name masonry), the first being referred as "speculative" and the latter as "operative". This common origin is clearly visible from the symbols of Masonry and the name "Great Architect" for God.
What’s a good resource for a cad hobbyist to incorporate this stuff into his designs?
Been trying to find a good book of exercises or something similar.
