  • A Tour de France in the study of l'Art du Trait & the Compagnon. These historic craft guilds have developed and maintained a system of craft that have produced many world renown architectural treasures. Who are they, and what could their impact be on todays building culture?

    Thank you so much for this informative and fascinating video. The skills of the craftspeople of old were incredible and it's great to see people today carrying on those traditions.

      Thank you! It's my belief, that at the end of the day, progress itself is unsustainable if it does not elevate into a tradition.

    The talk about rebuilding Notre Same, reminded me about Guédelon castle, and how they had preserved a lot of the knowledge needed for the reconstruction.
    I allso think you'd like fellow youtuber and craftsman Brent Hull.

    Formally trained in architecture here. 25 years in the business. Stereotomy has always fascinated me. However, I can do without the mystique surrounding it. This mysticism is French Enlightenment, where groups create cults. The study of this topic should be public and universal in orientation not surrounded by the romance of special knowledge.

    • @ReneSalasDesign
      @ReneSalasDesign  5 місяців тому +2

      Formally trained in architecture here, 23 years in the biz. I am equally skeptical about unchecked mysticism, but one has to acknowledge that if we wish to develop a building culture that can endure for 1000+ years, the narratives surrounding the education would naturally want to intertwine deeply within a culture. Originally this education was comingled within economically competing institutions, so protecting and gating this knowledge was incentivized. Today those economic incentives are minimized and the education is relatively ungated. However, we'd hope that this knowledge could endure any changing economics or governing systems, and one of the best ways to ensure that might be to imbue such knowledge with powerful narratives that increase the likelihood that motivated persons will safeguard that knowledge through any provocation.

      Robin Evans wrote extensively on this subject in his book The Projective Cast. It looks at this subject and more from an architectural perspective.

      Just pointing out that knowledge or expertise that is insular tends to run to dead end.

      Wonder if the knowledge goes all the way back to ancient Egyptians and Romans@@ReneSalasDesign

    • @ReneSalasDesign
      @ReneSalasDesign  18 днів тому +2

      @@AlvinLeong-me3iu the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Chinese definitely had their own version of stereotomy. L'trait is the specific 'language' of construction in the French tradition, which has origins in Greece/Egypt. The language of construction is/should be tethered to history as much as our spoken language is.

    • @ahoj7720
      @ahoj7720 3 місяці тому

      Free Masonry and Compagnons share a common origin and split over time (hence the name masonry), the first being referred as "speculative" and the latter as "operative". This common origin is clearly visible from the symbols of Masonry and the name "Great Architect" for God.
