Great video! I know exactly what you are saying. I'm one of those OG DJs as well in business for 30yrs +, 55 years old now. Still love it & will do it til I just can't anymore. I love watching your videos, because I can relate to alot of them. You definitely head the nail on the head. 😊
Coming from the club world as an owner/DJ I never totally felt artistic freedom because my bars had a format we followed. There was room for a personal touch obviously by introducing new music or a style that fit but wasn't a radio tune. For the most part I played toward the pop crowd...familiar tunes from the radio and club tunes that were big in clubs basically and that was successful for many years. Of course I had my favorite genres and specific songs I liked but wouldn't fit necessarily within the overall format. That was always a downer. Compare that to these touring dj's where you adapt to them, that is the ultimate artistic freedom. Or if you're hired for an event where you get total and I mean total control, that's another form of it. SO, not being in the club business anymore (damn covid), I've found that I am still handcuffed, so-to-speak, to these small gigs where I'm playing for all age groups at once. Kind of like weddings and it can be frustrating artistically. I just try to find ways to still make it work.
We as DJ’s are like a Therapist, Priest, Counselor & more. Being all that brings out our Artistic Side of us, and I find sometimes doing a gig under a certain level of stress brings out more in me. Great Video, Liked and Shared!!!
I never take a job that i dont have a creative interest in. There are some jobs i take because it is useful as a brain storming session for certain types of music
Apologies for detouring from the focus (good stuff, sounds like a match for you), but... I love the slight rotation of what's in the background of your videos to keep them fresh. You've surely considered this, but please continue to keep the artwork from James DePalma in your rotation. He was an acquaintance prior to our bonding over DJing and becoming friends. He was my go to back up and the only person I would let DJ my own wedding. Seeing his work over your shoulder is a little reminder. Every now and then. Thanks for all you contribute.
