As a minimum, we would recommend 12 weeks to realistically prepare for, and complete a triathlon. That’s not to say that it’s not possible in less time, but to turn up feeling relaxed and confident, then this length of preparation should do the trick. So, we’ll be gearing our series of videos to a 10-12 week training time.
As triathletes, you have 3 sports to juggle and this can be quite challenging. If you work out six times in a week, you might swim twice, bike twice, and run twice, but your longest bike ride might be one hour, whereas your swims might last 30 minutes each and your runs, 40 minutes.
If you have a background in swimming, you can probably get away with doing a little less on your stronger discipline, and spend a little more time on your weaker disciplines. At least to bring them up to a point that you’re more comfortable with them. You can of course play to your strengths, but that’s for a later date, for now we want to make sure you complete your first triathlon comfortably.
Whilst training for your first triathlon, it’s mostly about completion. So following a gradual and sensible plan that keeps you consistent with your training is the key.
We like to explain it as if you’re building the foundations. You can’t move on without those foundations, otherwise it will all fall apart. So, whilst it’s tempting, the harder and faster stuff could be more detrimental if you do it before you’re ready to.
We’ve got three sports. That means three different sports to buy kit for. But, unless you really want to, there is no need to take out a mortgage for a new bike and other kit for your first triathlon. We’re sure you’ll love the sport, but until you’ve done an event it’s worth holding off on spending a load.

i should probably learn to swim first....
😂😂
@@Nia-uq2pl I will have to learn running again after 3 knee surgeries in 2010.
@@barrylyndon80 You can do it
Let nothing stop you!
Well running has been my forte, I started learning swimming lately and now my legs tell me "How to run" 😃
I should learn how to bike first
Thanks GTN...after 3 months of training, completed my first Tri today...an Olympic distance (Columbus, OH...USA). Turning 50 tomorrow. Thanks for helping me achieve my goal!!
Brian Kieffer Brian, just curious, how does this affect your family life?
Nice! Have you done more?
Love the video! Please feel free to check us out! 😋
Awesome!!!
That's so incredible! Hopefully more tri successes in the last two years as well!
Give the editor a rise. I love the dynamics of these past few videos. Big thumbs up.
Gabor Lehocky what’s a rise?
+Rudy Gold I assume he means a raise.

Love the video! Please feel free to check us out!
@Rudy Gold
I would say rather than tri-suit for initial triathlon/s is to use Triathlon shorts and cycling jersey.
You'll get more use out of the cycling Jersey in day-to-day use and it has zip in front to allow cooling when on the run!
As a beginner I can tell you for sure that you don't need a Cervelo bike to complete an IronMan.
@@ForgottenKnight1 Up until this day I still dont understand how a bike can be that expensive
@@onlybetasgetoffendedbystri8030 A ton of little parts made by different manufacturers using quality materials. Hard to believe, I know, but every hobby will eventually become expensive with so many options.
@@digitalcthulhu143 Same thing with fishing lures.
I'm a seasoned triathlete, but am always curious on different people's tips for beginners... And while watching the video I noticed you both rocking different On models for the run portions. I am the rep here in the US for Southern California for On and it was a pleasant surprise to see that! Really dig it, guys!
Sounds like this is going to be a great series. Looking forward to it!
Can't wait for the training videos! Perfect timing since I just began training for my first tri. Looking forward to your guys wisdom and insights!
Good luck for the event! What distance did you go for?
This was a motivation for me. Two weeks for my 2nd tri! Can't wait!
Editing on point ❤️
Love the editing on this video, really snappy and flows nicely. More like this please!!!
The rest of the series is coming very soon!
Expect pain
These videos are always great! Really well presented.
Wow, this is one special show. In terms of editing ang writing.
The area I live in just held their first Tri today. I'm motivated to jump in to the fray next year. Thanks for the excellent advice.
Great video and I love that you're doing this series😍
Thanks Vgnls, we hope you enjoy it!
Looking forward to the next one, great videos guys
Thanks phill! You won't have to wait long.
Thanks you guys helped me do my first one and I loved it
What a great video!!! Love the content and keep up the amazing work!!!!!!
Thanks Karvin, much more coming soon!

Love the editing; great videos look for ward to more
Any videos or suggestions on bigger or overweight people trying to lean down and build up for a triathlon. Btw, I absolutely love your videos. Very informative and funny at times. Keep up the good work.
Ive just started. Went swimming twice last week, went for a good run today. On monday nights theres a guy that teaches me front crawl. Slowly getting the hang of it. Am not in a rush to do first competition anytime soon, I will probably wait til next year
I need to try this 👌🏻
Awesome Video! Gave me a boost and confident to go for it! Been running for almost a year and started swimming for a couple of months. Will slowly build a bike. I am aiming to start triathlon, Ironman included, next year. Glad to have found your channel which will be my bible for this journey. :)
Your production is on point ! Really enjoy watching these videos !
More coming very soon!
Thanks team .
Very good, fun video.
Glad that you enjoy triathlon training too! We are also training for an iron man 70.3 this year and are documenting our journey, along with sharing some studies and research on training along the way! Let us know if you like our content! :)

Thank you 🙏
just became sober and started training for a triathlon a year away. i used to race bikes, swim competitively/water polo and was always good at running. threw at all away 10 years ago for booze, smokes, other drugs, ready to reclaim my health and athleticism.
I’m excited for my first Triathlon next year
Smash it Davon! Nice work 🙌
Hi - great videos! Only coming across these now as have recently signed up for 2 x Sprint events next year. Is there a link to the training plan discussed in this series of videos please?
Great vid, but I'd love to know what I should change when training for my 2nd and 3rd tri
Many of the key training principles will be the same but this sounds like a great way to follow on from this series!
Could you also do a video/series on how to run? I just did my first two runs (3k and 5k) and I feel more broken than any endurance mtb race has ever exhausted me...
We have some... check out our 'Run With GTN' playlist!
Do triathlons have certain bike category? Can one use a hybrid/city bike in the race?
For my first Tri I even rented the wet suit and the bike (I did train on a bike I borrowed from a friend), so investment can be even less... This is for your second event that you start piling gears up :-D
This is a great tip if have friends and know people who have kit that you can borrow!
if you don't, go and find new friends ;-)
What about post race training? I just did my first tri last weekend and I wasn’t sure if I should take a few days off, one day, no days? And should we resume the heavier schedule right away or ease back into it?
You should listen to your body. If you feel sore, take a rest. You could also experience Dom's, especially if you are not used to doing the distances on a regularly basis, your legs will feel pretty beat up and the lower portion of your back. I would recommend a rest week where you still regularly exercise, but at a lower intensity and with more of an emphasis on recovery activities. Yoga, stretching, light cardio. The foam roller is your best friend and will help to get more blood flow into your muscles.
I hope this helps, awesome work on completing your first one 😀
please make a video about how to run a "perfect" 5K in a Sprint Distance :)
This might be a good starting place... gtn.io/Fast5k
Im sitting here wondering HOW MANY OF THESE CHANNELS DO THEY HAVE!
3:01 Here is a list of main essentials - Groovy Funky music
Seeing the olympics makes me want to do one but I can’t cycle neither can I swim. My running isn’t the best either. Deadly trifecta there lol
Same, i looked at the 13 year old distance recommended and i tried today and got the 6 mile bike and one mile run just fine but i didn't add the swimming
Awesome video! we are documenting our ironman triathlon journey and have just posted a video recently on how fasted training can be beneficial! Hope that information can be of help as any of you train for your triathlon! :)
Everyone should have fitness goals even if they are not athletes
10 to 12 weeks, that's pretty dangerous guys. With that period of training I would recommend a 1/4 triathlon as a beginner. Preventing injuries will be a lot more important!
Please do sections for relay triathalons
Awesome. Where do I sign up!
Yikes! I've been bitten. I've never done a tri, but I've decided to do it. I learned to swim when I was 5-years-old. Last year, at the age of 62, I rode my bike 17,778 kilometers. This year, I'm on-pace to exceed 20,000 kilometers of cycling. I need to run comfortably. My resting heart rate is 46-49bpm, and it's normally 115-120bpm for zone 2. I'm pretty competitive, but it's okay as long as I finish. I've done a half-marathon in the past, so with some training, I'm sure I can do it. Can I get some encouragement?
I have been a swimmer all my life and a cross country runner throughout middle school and some of highschool, I hope to do my first triathlon next summer. Hope there isnt an age requirement lol I will only be 15 when I do it. Really though, 6 miles really isnt that long seeing as how a long run for me is 8 miles but idk how hard it will be after swimming and biking
How did you do???
@@hanibaladaptiveboxing4204 wow forgot about this. I'm pretty sure there was an age requirement and I ended up not doing it because the equipment, especially for the biking portion, was pricey. Don't worry though there is good news. I completed my first marathon in may and it took a lot of work. I finally achieved my goal of doing one of those "big races" haha.
Ill be back when im competing on triathlon.
hahaha I'm watching this video because I want to start training, but my triathlon is happening next weekend, I'm screwed!!
Good luck!
tnks! your videos are helping me a lot, with all the tips, even though there's no way to really train in one week, at least I have good pointers not to die!
Hi!
Could you please recommend me a simple and cheap bike mark to start training? I want to start training for the first triathlon. Thanks.
Any advice for those newbies who have work/life schedules constantly changing? I have a young family and run a business. It’s tough trying to stay consistent at times with training.
I have this issue. My answer is to get up before everyone and get it in early. I find I am more motivated in the morning and staying up watching TV is a big time sink I can live without.

how to maintain the CK level (Creatine Kinase level ) during training ? your comment is appreciated .
Does anyone know where I can find that poster at 2:19?
How do you know the difference between lazyness and needing rest ???
Hey, Just had few questions about it. I don't know how to swim but i have done marathons. How many years would it take someone like me to prepare for a triathlon? considering if i spend this year learning to swim. A little advice from you would keep me motivated. This was a great video, so simple and so informative. Thanks in advance.
depends on what length you want to start with, a full triatlon isn't something you can get done in a few months if you have learn to swim before training the swimming part. You might want to start with a sprint or a 1/4 triatlon after you have gotten your swimming skills up to basic standards. I know from when I was young it was 1 or 2 years once a week I think to learn how to swim, so to be able to swim will go faster for an adult who is fit enough. Depending on how fast you can learn it it shouldn't take more than about 10 sessions, maybe even faster, after that you can train to swim well and longer. I would say if you are decently fit, 1/4 triatlon should be no problem to finish. Pacing is everything as you will know from marathons.
Thank you so much... this definitely calmed my nerves. I think i will get my basics right with swimming and may be next year start with 1/4 triathlon. Again thanks a lot for such a practical and positive reply. Cheers.
Ajit Nair no problem and good luck with training. Just keep it up with frequent and it will go well.
I just got back into swimming after 16 years. I swim about 1000 yards 4 times a week. What should I aim for?
I'm preparing for two distances: 70.3 and ironMan. For half ironMan I assumed one year of preparation is ok, and another year for full ironMan. I have a swimming background, but I really struggle with running. So most of my training are easy runs. Like, 5 days to run, 2 days to swim and 2 days to cycle. Often combine swim and cycling in one day.
Thanks for the great video! For the suits, do you mean we wear the trisuit then for Swimming, we wear the wetsuit over the trisuit?
Yes!
Brilliant vid, I am going to give it a go.
What’s a good beginner bike?
Thanks GTN! Can I please have your permission to translate your videos into another language (crediting you guys of course!)

I want to be a triathlete but am scared of water and don't know swimming..can I still learn and do it
when you’ve been training six days/week for seven months in preparation, and realize you’re way over trained for your first entry tri lol
Over training Is a thing, you might be missing out on vital recovery time. Some times it's best to take a rest day.
What is the sequence of triathlon? Fist which one swimming or running or biking?
It is usually Swimming first, then biking and finally running! We are training for an iron man 70.3 this year and are documenting our journey, along with sharing some studies and research on training along the way! Let us know if you like our content! :)
Is it weird I’m 11 and one a half marathon and never learned to ride road bike

What is a triathlon? 😕

I translated with G but it says 3 patatos marathons
tri = 3, athlon = marathon --> swimming, cycling then running

My first triathlon, I dnt even own a bike 😂
I had lend one, no Tri suite either
I have no got a bike and a Tri suite for my next one 😁
Personally, it is my belief that you work on your weakest event the most; your strongest the least. I did the Nautica Triathlon last summer in Malibu and the tenth wave of athletes could not make it past the wave break. There are videos here on UA-cam. I was astonished at the poor swimming quality of at least 1/3 of the athletes.
5 foot 4 inches & 300 pounds
why did my english teacher send this as a homework...
I can recommend not having an expensive bike when you do your first triathlon.
It's been 20 years since I gave up triathlon and there is one race that stick in my mind. Before this race I had a crash on my race bike and so I raced on my training bike with mud guards and a pannier rack. I was over taking people who were on full carbon fiber low profile time trial bikes that cost many thousands of pounds, and I was just going faster without even any tri bars just standard drops on my training bike. It was so funny I still laugh about it today.
This was 20 years ago so a full carbon fiber bike would be several thousand pounds, don't spend that sort of money if you are slow. Being slow is perfectly reasonable everyone has to start somewhere, just make sure your bike matches your ability.
Some people were racing on mountain bikes, they were slow and I have respect for them for giving it a go and racing.
But come on if you spend more money on your bike than some people spend on a car then just do some more training so that you don't get overtaken by someone on a winter training bike with mud guards and a pannier rack.
Matthew Baynham or you could just not judge people on their skill or bike choice
But the orange shoes that he is wearing what brand are they
They're called ON 🙂

That's hilarious! The joke of the day.
10 or 12 week i don't thikn so
Depends on how physically fit you already are, and your bf percentage, you could easily do a tri if you were at a moderate level of health and we're familiar with swimming biking and running. It really isn't that hard to complete one, to be competitive for one though. You are looking for a sub 30m 10km a sub 20 min swim and a sub 50 min ride for an Olympic tri, now that is extremely difficult.
i just checked it costs $700 to get into the race...
