I think what you do with sharing your techniques with all of us is very generous. I will say thank you for all the people who might not say it themselves. Thank you!
I don't know how you don't have millions of subscribers now. You were and still remain to be my favorite artist. I love how you readily share all that you know.
You are indeed part of a new breed of artists that are lifting the veil, exposing the mysterious secret of painting. I've known and met numerous artists who always seemed to be holding back information, almost like guarding a secret recipe. I remember as a young boy in Ft. Lauderdale, during the summer at the beach, walking the docks where the sport fishing boats were along with the really nice yachts and sailboats. There were artists who painted the yachts, most likely for the owners. I remember most of these artist not being very friendly. I could probably draw as good or better than most of these people but, their attitude and the air they gave off just reeked of elitism and all I wanted to do was watch.......I was quiet, didn't bug them, "scram kid" they'd say, "whatta ya want" they'd ask. I just wanted to watch. That was it. Now, fifty years later, here I sit, watching an accomplished artist plying his trade for all to see. Nothing mysterious going on. Not one step of a painting is left out. You could easily leave out a part and say " oh, if you'd like to see how THAT was done " buy the DVD but, no you're a new breed of artist. One who shares that secret recipe that's been guarded for centuries, kinda like a magician will never reveal the secret to the trick, that tradition ends with this new breed of artists. Now it seems, after watching you and others work your magic..................that work's the magic. Work at it. Work at it. Work at it. Work at it. Whatever method one chooses to work, it has to be worked at. The old artist on the dock should've just said "I'm working"
That's true and that is the only reason I actually decided to sign up for his school. When I was younger, I went to painting classes for 3 years and the bastard who was the teacher didn't tell us even how we should mix the colors! I was always surprised why he chose certain colors. why did he choose another color rather than white to make a lighter green for example, and I could not formulate how to do it myself. I asked and he always said you should just learn by eye and practice, never mentioned there was a simple formula behind that!!! Anyhow, at some point, I finally decided to quit painting because I could never learn how to mix colors. until a year ago I accidentally found a video on color mixing and it was so simple and easy!!! I decided to start painting again. watched some videos on techniques and color mixing, etc. and finally when I found Michael, I stopped looking more for the style I liked. I love how he paints and how easy and enjoyable he makes it. He makes it easy, enjoyable, and wonderful.
Rick, I know what you mean. The only artist I could watch was Bob Ross on public TV on Sunday afternoons. And paints sets were very expense back then. I thank God for Michael and the multitude of artist at my fingertips (literally) every day sharing their wisdom.
When you are adding in the details it appears, at first, that you are taking away from the picture, when in fact it is becoming more detailed. Watching your process is indeed a study in illusion in and of itself. It's like watching a magician on stage, and even though the magician could tell everything that he's doing, step by step, you still watch that person work and wonder how they did it.
Michael soy un ferviente seguidor de tus tutoriales de pintura, las cuales me parecen extraordinarias, lastima que los vídeos no se reproduzcan en español para poder estar pendientes de todos los detalles que explicas en ellos.
Hi Michael another beautiful and inspiring painting. Very useful and informative with an excellent choice of music 🎵 l enjoyed watching you painting and there is always something new to learn. Thank you 🙏
Michael, I think you've got the setup spot on now, with the palette and reference pic showing. Also the real time painting is so much more informative and interesting than the speeded up stuff (although I know it is necessary at times). I think i enjoyed this more than any other video you have done - hard to better this now, so many thanks and you deserve all the success you are obviously having.
Been struggling with a commission that has a heavy mountain focus and I found this video really helpful! Particularly your comment about not needing the mountains to look as detailed as the photo really helped a lot! I think I was really overthinking everything I was doing, and this video really brought me back down to the main focus of the painting (does it look good rather than does it look EXACTLY like the photo).
I really admire your work. Thank you for giving details on how you do your paintings. I find it very helpful when you show your photo as you paint the subject. It helps me to see how you mix the tones. Keep up the good work!
Even though we live in different worlds and probably I ll never going to meet you in person, I feel like im being thought by an old friend. Your work is just mesmerizing and I wish I had the resources and time to paint and just 1/4 of your talent. Thanks for passing on your talent...
well Michael I'm so proud of you I wish that I could paint as well I paint good but I'm still getting there it's wonderful to watch you and have you inspire me to be able to paint as I wish I could thank you so much for all your effort
I have learned much from you already I didn't know you could mix acrylic and oil I love to the blocking technique I love the techniques for the water I love how you painted Scarlett Johansson that just slipped my confidence completely because I tried to do it with a baby picture and really did very well I've learned much from you already and I appreciate it very much thank you so much Michael
Just got into oil painting and I'm struggling a lot. Your videos are such an inspiration for me, maybe one day I'll be just one tenth as good as you are. You are easily the most impressive oil painter I've seen so far. I subbed to your channel a few days ago and I already learnt a lot... thanks mate!
The combination picture, palette and production picture was very good. Please show the process of block in slowly with acrylic on the same combination screen.
Michael, it is very informative now and easy to follow with both reference photo and palette. Initially I thought it would be too crowded with both being shown. It works out really well. One suggestion: is possible that at the end of the video, zoom in to show the area that just being worked on? Enjoy your videos all the time.
awesome as usual ! hey michael, i was wondering (maybe you already have done this in a video) but , if you could ,,,make a quick video of any tips or ideas to have when you "block" in a picture... ive heard you use this term and for us newbies- how to start the "ground work" sort of speak. thank you VERY much for taking the time to post these wonderful vids
Wow I love your paintings and love to watch. I took painting classes years ago but haven't continued with it. A shame for sure. There are subtle painting differences between your technique and my tutors. One I notice is you start with a lighter color and quite often work to darker. I was taught it would not look natural but yours looks more so. But curiosity has got me to ask why you start with lighter colors? You also paint details instead of dabbing on the color, lovely. I don't think I have seen you use a scumbo either to make the picture look like it has depth and yet your pictures have depth. Keep painting so I can keep watching! And hopefully learning. I got acrylic paints for Christmas.
Hello, Sir.. I just love the detail and precision with which you paint. I also want to ask if you tone the canvas before you start to make it smooth? Because this level of detail would not be possible grainy canvas
Thanks so much. Very nice. I love the clouds. Did you record how you did them? I would love to see if you did. Thank you for sharing. I am learning a lot from you. And it's got me painting again.
Thank you Michael ! Now it is much better when you have displayed the refference picture all the time. Can you dedicate some of your future tutorials to the process of how you record the videos? Especially from a technical point of view. It would be nice to explain what devices ans SW do you use and how make a synchonization. Once again, thanks a lot for you nice course.
I think what you do with sharing your techniques with all of us is very generous. I will say thank you for all the people who might not say it themselves. Thank you!
The biggest thing I have learned from you is - just keep painting. Your finished product is so amazing.
I don't know how you don't have millions of subscribers now. You were and still remain to be my favorite artist. I love how you readily share all that you know.
An excellent teacher God bless you 🌷
Michael, thank you for adding the reference photo with the pallet. You are an amazing artist and very generous for sharing your process. All the best.
This is what I was looking for!
Thank you Michael James Smith!!!!!!!

p
Rick Hargett that is so true. I love this artist because he is so real and he explains things clearly. That makes me respect him and even cherish him.

You are absolutely correct. I have the same observation with many artists. It is so good that you brought it out.
of course, your ability to apply the colors make the difference. Thanks for sharing

Love your art so much I'm sure I saw the clouds move...
Michael, thanks again for the palette and original view...and of course all the technical advice. CHEERS!
I'm loving the palette, photo reference setup and detailed explanation! You ROCK!!!
REAL
Of so many artists here on youtube your painting is the most real, and so beautiful.
You explained it so easily and simply, so I understood it well. You’re good at teaching as well as at painting!

I am so glad I found this channel. Excellent work, sir.
Hi Michael another beautiful and inspiring painting. Very useful and informative with an excellent choice of music 🎵 l enjoyed watching you painting and there is always something new to learn. Thank you 🙏
Very realistic and you make it look like something a learner could attempt. I am going to have a go at this thankyou for sharing.

Love watching you take a white canvass and bringing it to life. Truly amazing. Only wish I could paint like this.
I could spend all day watching you paint...! And you're such a wonderful teacher too! Thanks so much for all your video uploads...
Wonderful drawing💕💕

I really admire your work. Thank you for giving details on how you do your paintings. I find it very helpful when you show your photo as you paint the subject. It helps me to see how you mix the tones. Keep up the good work!

Awesome, Michael James Smith Ross!
There aren’t many tutorials about tree or green-covered hills / mountains. This is quite helpful.
Spectacular as usual. You are an inspiration to all us struggling realist painters. Please keep sending us the great videos.

He doesn't use canvas but PVC board which he primes and then sandpaper it.
Assume you're still blocking in using acrylics? You haven't covered glazing which is an entire subject itself. Another wonderful demo!
Gracias, maestro por tus exelentes videos que enseňam mucho.
Unbelievable skill of art!waoooo 😍👍
I love your mountain superb and lifelike 🤗🙋🎨

More brilliant work, thanks for the upload
Have you ever tried to paint flowers, realistic ones? And seascapes? I would love to see them.
how long does it take you to finish a painting like this and why is your website unavailable? Love your paintings!
Do you block out your undertone painting with acrylics or do you just let it dry first?
Amazing
Thanks so much. Very nice. I love the clouds. Did you record how you did them? I would love to see if you did. Thank you for sharing. I am learning a lot from you. And it's got me painting again.
