It really is sad how the doctors who prescribe these drugs aren't fully informed of the addiction and dangers well enough, and then the give the poison to there patience thinking it will help them I have had 5 different major surgeries, and opted out of any opiods. Not too long ago i went to a gas station in Norton and saw somebody my dad used to know sitting outside the station. He was having a conversation… with nobody. Turns out that his girlfriend hooked him up on fentanyl. He took a nearly lethal dose and began hallucinating that someone was talking to him. He’s luckily clean now.
Just imagine what legal cannabis would do to to an economy in an area like this. Legalize it, let people start their own businesses and charge a fair flat fee for cost of startup. $1000
Norton hospitals and doctors serve 4 counties in Virginia, including 2 which had no hospitals at the time of this story(Lee and Dickenson county, Lee has since reopened a hospital) and 1 county in Kentucky. 5 counties, more than 100,000 patients, not all the pills dispensed in Norton were for Norton residents! The Walmart pharmacy, as well as the in house pharmacy at the two hospitals accounted for most of the pills dispensed but to patients from 5 counties, not just the city of Norton. This article is full of half truths, falsehoods, lies, misleading claims and biased reporting.
It is interesting that the decline in doctor's practices are correlating to an increased accesbility of opioids. It is very alarming that in Norton, VA, there was 306 pills received per person per year. The response effort coming from inner cities versus rural towns greatly differs. It is much easier for people to recieve help in urban areas as there are increased opportunities to seek help, as local, state, and federal agencies put more resources into big cities. Politicians and legislators need to take action to help fund programs that can help the citizens of Appalachia that are at risk of the opioid crisis. Doctors in Appalachia also need to be held accountable for the masses of pills that are being prescribed. Investigation into these practices needs to take place.

And it's affecting mostly whites because doctors wouldn't prescribe opioid pills to black americans when this first started. They thought blacks would sell them or abuse them. Instead those doctors and pharmacies gave them to their own white people now look, they're abusing them and selling them. Racism came back and bit them in the a**. Killing their own people faster than anything else could. And of course this problem will never go away because these people blame the doctors, pharmacies, Mexican border, drug dealers, everything and everybody except themselves. So the problem will never go away because you have to take some responsibility an order to fix a problem. And that's responsibility they don't know how to take without blaming others. This opioid pandemic has hit 3 generations now, how can anyone claim it's someone else fault when these people saw their family members before them strung out and they chose to go down the same path knowing it would destroy them. Meaning as a kid these people saw older relatives dealing with it, and now they're dealing with it when they could have learned from the other family member mistakes.
