  • This short video was my first test of my three main operating modes on the Xiegu X6100 (SSB, CW, and FT8). The radio performed flawlessly and it is certainly an excellent radio to own, especially for you POTA, SOTA, WWFF, and portable operators. There are some more bugs for the Xiegu to work out, but I am really satisfied with my purchase. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the video. I just installed the open source firmware from R1CBU. That firmware is excellent and definitely worth trying out. It boots off the card and will revert back to Xiegu's firmware when the card is removed and the radio is turned back on. Thanks again for a great video.

    I also have an IC 705, and for portable hf I much prefer my x6100. Yes, it has a few bugs and issues that need to be resolved but in general, these things do not get in the way of making fantastic and regular contacts with the radio. In my opinion, the x6100 is the closest thing to a perfect HF qrp portable radio that we've seen yet. It's not perfect, no, but it's fantastic all the same.

    • @K2PMD
      @K2PMD  2 роки тому +6

      Yeah, when I got my 705 it too had (and still has) some issues. But ham radio is also about figuring things out. If hams act like typical consumers and expect everything to work perfectly out of the box, they will often be frustrated. Thanks for your great comments. I couldn't agree more.

    it gets hot.. use the heat sink.. i added the amazon purchased 2 heat sinks that together look like the size of your one you showed. looking to add more 14mm x 14mm heat sinks at the bottom of the case to further draw heat away. I do POTA on SSB as an activator... last night did over 100 sqo in 2 hrs..(at 4w internal battery then into my PAX100 amp giving 80-100w out)...it was less hot with heat sink..but still hot..wonder how long our internal batteries will survive in this rig... my other rig is a G90... the only other unit I own and used for over 10K qsos last year on POTA.. G90 (with installed fan/hence more power draw) is cool after 3 hrs POTA..so.. X6100.. we'll have to see (also don't run CHARGE while on external power.. really heats up)..I am a 1 week owner so far...we' all learning together.. so thanks for you great video. I love my X6100... can wait to try some hacks like re-flash with built in digi modes, no external PC needed..will use it on my POTA activations with the PAX100 vs the G90 now.. smaller, more portable.

    Paul great video. Enjoyed your tests on SSB, CW, and FT8. I'm quite hesitant about getting a X6100 most due to the heat issue. What are your thoughts ?

    • @K2PMD
      @K2PMD  Рік тому +3

      Hi! The heat issue is somewhat of a problem, but I have not experienced any failures or interruptions to my operations with the radio due to heat. In fact, though a lot of people complain about the heat issues, I have not heard anyone talking about the radio failing because of it.
      My biggest concern with the radio is that the Bluetooth, the Wireless function, and the tuning issues continue to need fixing and we have all waited quite some time for a firmware update with none in sight.
      I love the form factor, weight, and ease of use of the radio. It really is easy to operate and has some super cool functions. Though I use my IC-705 a lot more, I would use my 6100 more if some of these issues were fixed.

    • @hamradiobasics
      @hamradiobasics Рік тому +1

      @@K2PMD I knew about the Bluetooth & Wireless being issues but not heard anything about the tuning ? I really like the portability of it compared to the IC-705 and that it has a tuner. The IC-705 is under consideration but pricey, is much larger, and does not have tuner. BTW I grew up in Pittsburgh - small world ! Bill KW4QO

    • @K2PMD
      @K2PMD  Рік тому +2

      Hey Ahmed, the CW reader isn't really that good. Sometimes it works in trainer mode but sometimes it doesn't. If you have an Android phone or tablet, download this free app: Morse Expert. It does a great job as a CW decoder.

    Hi Paul what you think about this radio as a base station? For DX?
    Forget about the "power problem" always can add an amp.
    But I mean about the radio itself.. about filters , performance...
    I also heard that speakers sound do nto sound good.. but always can buy external speakers.
    Give me a feedback please.

    • @K2PMD
      @K2PMD  11 місяців тому

      Hi friend, I love this little radio for portable ops, especially since it has a tuner in it and an internal sound card (not to mention an internal battery.) It isn't perfect, but it does have a lot of features more expensive radios do not. However, if I wanted a radio to be a base station and a portable radio, I would not buy this radio. It does have the receive sensitivity and filtering I expect when dx'ing. At the lower price point, I would either buy an IC7300 or Yaesu FT-710; both of these radios could easily do the double duty of base and portable. (I have had the 7300 and I now have the FT-710 for my base station). I also think the Icom IC705 is an awesome radio that could easily be a base station with an amp. The price point of the X6100 a really good buy for the POTA/SOTA enthusiast, but it just doesn't cut it for the serious SSB or CW operator, who wants clear commo and good filtering/receive sensitivity. I hope this is helpful.

    What is the Firmware version? I have the latest and the CW MSG function plays, but will not go into transmit.

    • @K2PMD
      @K2PMD  2 роки тому +1

      Hi John. I am using the latest firmware, V1.1.5.
      A few things to do to ensure you are getting out using CW messaging.
      1. Make sure that CW Trainer is set to off. That is on the second menu of the KEY function button.
      2. Press the APP function button.
      3. Press the MODEM button
      4. Press the MSG function button.
      5. Press your MSG button.
      Let me know if that works for you.

    • @K2PMD

      I am not impressed with the decoder. It really isn't that good. Now, I have heard it is much better if you use the alternative firmware developed by R1CBU & CT7ALW. Here is there webiste. r1cbu.ru/. I am planning on checking out their firmware as many users seem to like it better than Xiegu's, and it is really easy to switch back if you don't like it.
