Barack Obama, George Clooney, Madonna, Kevin Spacey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Gates, Richard Branson - are all the names of people whose walls are graced by the works of British artist Sacha Jafri.
It's no wonder Jafri has previously been hailed as one of the world's most important living artists.
A former classmate of Tracey Emin and a specialist in 'magical realism', Esquire Middle East were invited by Sacha into his Dubai home, ahead of his 18-year global retrospective, to discuss everything from the man's meditation techniques to his brief career as a professional cricket player.
I'm an artist, and I understand it's an individual preference. But let your work do the talking.

Yeah let your painting do the talking, and let the viewer interact. Great painting but he doesn’t need to narrate each one. His style has evolved quite nicely over time. Just paint less talking.
Collectors these days interested in concepts ideas meaning of the artwork more than ever before. So, this guy understand the market. That is why he so successful.
Personally, I prefer to understand the context behind the painting... So it's refreshing to hear him explain...

Someone should send him a copy of the essay: _Death_ _of_ _the_ _author._ He’s talented, and his colors are powerful. But they’re not matched artistically, his style is a pastiche of other greats before him and he doesn’t outride culture or stay ahead of it because he’s far too involved in it.
I look at his work and it walks the thinnest line between whatever it is and graffiti. In a way that’s unique. I can see how Hollywood and billionaire types that know little about anything are attracted to it.

I am an artist and Love hearing other artists talk about their work. It is hard for me to understand why it is boring to you. You are getting a new look at the painting from the artists perspective. I find that enriching.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I love his paintings!
Edit - I just googled his name and there is a Forbes article from March 2021 that mentions his Journey Of Humanity painting recently selling for $62 million.
So for people that are saying his paintings are garbage, he talks too much, why are there so many paintings in his house and he must not be selling them and blah blah blah THERE YOU GO!

Sasha, don’t explain your work to people. Let them find their own truth in it. That’s art. Telling a person what to feel in a piece of art kills your work. I’m what I love about going to gallery’s I love coming up with my own conclusions and feeling the work.

As an Artist/Art Therapist, I enjoyed hearing his process. I can form my own ideas but I wish more artists would be a bit more willing (or able) to discuss their work. I get that the viewer takes what they will from a finished piece, but if you have a body of work and concepts you are exploring, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with discussing it if someone asks. It depends on your motivations. If you want to communicate and express through your art, certainly you can let it speak for itself, but I think the level of criticism on this thread has much more to do with frustration and perhaps resentment seeing another artist’s work being valued. And, you don’t have to like it, but no, it’s not “easy” to consistently create large scale works and if you think abstract work itself is easy, I suggest you try it. Many artists won’t have a clue what’s going on in their own work but self-reflection and exploring what you’ve created is not a bad practice.

This is one of my favorite it's called crap... I got the idea by looking at a pile of crap for too long and now I m going to explain everything to you about the crappy painting and then how someone rich idiot without any knowledge of art is going to buy it for millions .... It's true art in its purest form...

Im an artist. I hateeeeee listening to artists come up with elaborate responses for their pieces. Paintings. Especially abstracts come from being in the moment and developing a painting by watching it evolve. This guy is just trying to sound intelligent. Hes sooooo deep. Give me a break.

If he didn’t say what he said on this video we wouldn’t know any of the history of the pieces. like I love the story of the African kids getting some joy from painting that, during such horrible times that’s a good thing. You should go do something dope like saving refugees lives, paint something than please tell people about it why not.

I absolutely agree with you! He’s basically telling you what to feel, which is absurd! Also, there’s too much going on in the rooms, too much distraction, too much displaying of wealth!
His ego is indeed a huge turn off and ultimately a detriment to a potential artistic experience. The art doesn’t match the marketing, in the end.
I love Sacha Jafri’s work. It is intense and prolific. It depicts the beauty, horror snd chaos that we experience in our world. His philanthropy and how much money he’s raised for others who are suffering are what I envy -I wish I could give that much (how would the world improve?)The people who make hateful comments are keeping themselves at a low level snd are focusing on the wrong details.

I love the idea of the painting as organic, alive and breathing and interacting - and I totally agree that to depict true life is to depict the soul of the Earth - its all like a bridge between abstract expressionism and magic realism

I'm general very open to art, i love abstract, i love expessionistic, i love colors and forms and lines. I think his art looks superficially pleasing, however i think it's 100% kitch and his serious explanation just compounds that idea.

Sacha is fantastic.Compmaturism sometimes explores that part of beauty which is covered in routine, craftsmanship, and speculation. Therefore, the eyes of many collectors are turned to the Compmaturism of the new trend in order to experience something truly.

art is such a vast creative expression done in many ways, I think observing art and seeing how it speaks to the individual observer is a better way to critic an artwork, personally I don't think art should be defined by words, just like reality can't be defined by words, I do dig he loose style and I applaud anyone that loves painting large pieces and getting lost in their art, but I would limit the words spoken and let people give it their own meaning

Re 'Let the work do the talking' I think it depends on which philosophy you take about enlarging on the painting or not. To me it's like saying .... don't paint that area green when it should be blue ... who's to say!! I would love to hear more of what Sacha Jafri's has to say mainly because I think his art work is talented, diverse and he talked about mystical beings which have been an experience with my art for the past twelve months.

If you had an understanding of art history and philosophy you would know that 'logical points' would merely point to an artists method when using compositional constructs; not their concepts used or art subject! The former's function is to serve in the production area of the painting, not the personal subject or expression of the artist. He has a lot of important and well known people collecting his art, you know, real art connoisseur, people in the know, not people like you who get your art from Target. There are know more art movements to come or go, it's all already been done just like fashion, everything is being recycled, the old becomes the new and in vogue for a while and then becomes the old again. it's already been done.
A few words about Compmaturism. Today you can still get a few or a dozen good works by Compmaturists. In a few years it will be impossible, Some collectors already have 50 works of Compmaturism. The main destinations are Dubai, Hong Kong and London

IMO I can appreciate abstract art ,but the majority of it is pretty awful because people think you can do anything ,there are good reasons why a painting works or doesn’t ,all the flowery words in the world can’t change a confused mess .

Sacha Jafri abstract art is no more and no less than what is consider good to great abstract art, it all depends on who the art industry wants to promote as the next big thing, and his being a non Caucasian could also play a big reason why you don't view his work as worthy of praise as those who are collecting his work view it.

I also am a massive art nerd and artist myself.
I can get behind most abstract painter's process and paint an aweful lot too, but tbh his thought process is kinda weak:
"I wanted to express A so I did B" without really ever getting to the point of how or why the two ideas converge.
Then My last gripe with him. 12 works per 2 year is REALLY taking his time.
I've been painting for a bit more than 8 years and I lost track of how many projects I did so that would be weird for a painter of this supposed caliber to only have produced 108 paintings in that time frame.
I'm not hating on the guy though I'm happy for him. I'm just always a bit weirded out when I see the kind of artist that float on top while some way lesser known works are so much more thought provoking. I hate the comparison but the money aspect forces me to
