    A part of Tifa's character design that I'm sad very few people ever tackle is how it probably was though to serve as a foil of the other main female lead, Aerith.
    (I say T and A are the female leads since Yuffie is technically a secret character and unlike the other secret party member, Vincent, her story doesn't tie directly into the main plot).
    While Tifa is motherly and supportive another important part of her character is her insecurities and how that makes her shy away on her personal relationships. And even with that her showing of skin is only second to Nanachi (who is literally naked).
    Meanwhile Aerith is completely covered from neck to ankles while being the most flirty, out-going and secure out of the female party members.
    Just a interesting way their design and personalities were made to clash I never see mentioned regarding the video's subject.
    It kinda reminds me how Yoko Taro (writter of the Drakengard and NieR series) has said in interviews how he describes to his character designers personalities and backstories that don't fit to the characters he has actually written and plans to use those designs on.
    BTW I'm grateful no one has tried to spin any conspiracies about Tifa now hiding her legs in the redesign with the thigh highs, I'm a big fan of those. :^)

      Finally, I find someone who points out the differences in Aeris' and Tifa's outfits and their personalities. I agree that this design choice is frequently overlooked when talking about these two characters.

    Damn, it's been so long since I last played FF7 I completely forgot about Tifa's backstory. To be fair I had a notion there was gonna be some "shrinkage" in her redesign, simply because that's been a pattern in more than a few redesigns (Lara Croft). And none of them have been terrible, certainly not in the sense fanboys are all in an uproar about less boobs. But let's be honest here, as FF7 OG, Tifa had MINIMAL time in terms of gameplay. Her limit break was so RNG (and based on button-timing) the damage was largely inconsistent, and she was benched at the earliest possible time. I'm pretty sure that was when you got Red XIII. So it shouldn't be a huge uproar because those of us who did play knew Tifa was ultimately not played for very long in terms of the entitre game.
    As for her redesign, my only complaint was they softened up her brawler frill too much. The boots look soft and thin, the gloves look barely more than decoration. She also lacks muscle definition, which irks me more than anything. I mean she is a monk/brawler archetype, you don't have to make her look all chiseled and ripped. But at least make her physique look a LITTLE like she is capable of punching robots (which she clearly did in the game-play reveal). Maybe a few light scars here and there, something to better communicate she can brawl and throw down and is no stranger to fighting. I just hope they change her game-play enough in the remake she will be a more viable party member throughout the game.

    I think a great comparison for this kind of conversation is the Tracers Butt controversy from a few years back. Oftentimes many of the complaints and outrage around these character design changes have nothing at all to do with how the character in question comes off, they just don't like the idea of "SJWs" censoring their titties and asses. A lot of people don't seem to understand that design can express more than "wow that's cool" or "wow that's hot".
    And it's clear that is about her sexually, and not just because there was some change either cause where's the talk about her eyes then? They changed drastically in size, and no mentioned that. It's hard then for me to even want to engage in a serious topic about whether or not Tifa's breast size changes matter, since most of the critique isn't coming from a caring and well thought out source.

    • @Densoro
      @Densoro 5 років тому +5

      That's exactly what I've been saying! They wanna keep the 'lol we don't know how 3D modeling works yet so her boobs randomly double in size for a single scene so that we can jiggle them, then shrink back down,' but they don't care about her losing her huge, expressive eyes!

  • @JapanguyGM2500

    I wouldn't say that Tifa engaging in violence is a form of her "repressing" her motherly nature. In fact I think It's quite the opposite. Having gone through so much tragedy and hurt in the past herself, she's using it as a way to protect those she loves and cares about. There's plenty of cases where even the kindest and gentlest of mothers will do anything to protect their children, so rather I think this is an extension of all of Tifa's traits just expressed through combat. "The desire to protect what she loves."

    Regarding boots: I've met an artist teacher who claimed that most of his student's strongest weakness when learning to draw is to make appropriate feet for the body's size. So, a possible solution is an overcompensation with footwear that also provides a larger ground cover, giving a feel of anchoring safety (like a "mountain").

    • @winzoln
      @winzoln 5 років тому +2

    I mean, Tifa's had relatively the same appearance as her Remake version since Advent Children in 2005 and continued through Dissidia. As the original FFVII Tifa was designed to function within the framework of simple early PSX graphics, once they actually gave her realistic human proportions that model was required to evolve. Part of the problem is decades of fan/erotic art have somewhat stapled Tifa and her buxomness together into the consciousness, until they've become her identity outside anything to do with her characterization.
    Though mostly it's just the usual shitty people who want clicks peddling the same dog-whistle demagoguery.

    Personally I can devide my opinion on this whole thing in two parts
    Part 1: Sports bras just make sense in case of someone that does sports. I love big anime tiddies as much as anyone else but as people said for the monk/fighter of the group it makes sense for her to wear a bra or have smaller boobs because it's fat and when you do monk-esque stuff you tend to burn fat. I also like your reading about mother hood and being a care taker. I honestly never played FF7 and somehow I still had the big sister vibe from Tifa. But I also think it's a shame they didn't giver her more muscle. People already said it in the comments but I'm okay with a skinny Tifa in the overstylized art style of FF7 but when the remake shoots for more realistic stuff I think giving her just that tad bit of muscle definition would actually suit her really well.
    Part 2: I remember a video of Gaijin Goombah about characters with big breasts. And I don't really remember all of it but I remember agreeing on one thing: We really need more big tittied characters that aren't sexualized. I strongly believe that we should be working more on disassociating big breast swith slutiness. And I think a way of doing that is exposing us to more large breasted characters that don't have their body be linked automatically to their sexyness or sexuality. I've noticed that in the west you just never see big breasted characters because those don't exist I guess ? And in anime big breasts HAVE to be played up for a cheap ecchi scene and I don't think that needs to be done each gosh darn time.

    I didn't play FF7 when it first came out, was too young to really be into video games at the time, I did play Crisis Core sometime in middle school (I think, its been a good while since then) and loved the game and the story, then i moved on to play FF7. Personally I'm ecstatic just knowing that the remake is happening, and personally I love what I'm seeing about the remake. Personally her design in Advent Children is still my favorite look for her but the remake is sitting comfortably at #2.

    One way I've seen people online describe some of the new cute anime girls revealed at E3 is that "everybody's horny and nobody's happy". The example I saw was comparing how some people reacted to Nessa from Pokemon SWSH versus how people react to remastered Tifa; which I'm gonna be honest I never played FFVII so I can't look through nostalgia goggles like some people are. With Nessa, a lot of people think she's over-sexualized with her body style and the fact that she's wearing a swimsuit; which in all fairness all the water type trainers wear some kind of swimsuit or aquatic gear. But with Tifa, a good number of people think she isn't sexualized enough. So yeah, everybody is horny and nobody is really happy.

  • @jeanphilippeteschner8431
    @jeanphilippeteschner8431 5 років тому +12

    One thing I noticed while replaying FF7 is that the image they want to give with the characters and their actual personalities are almost polar opposites. Tifa looks like a bratty fit tomboyish anime girl right down to her design, but the first time she opens her mouth in game she`s very sweet and kind, almost the opposite of her design. Same deal with Aerith from looking at her you expect a very shy innocent girl, but the moment you fall on that church roof she`s basically bullying Cloud and making light of his edgyness. And it makes a lot of sense Aerith is after all a slum brat and giving her that same behavior made for a more memorable experience. I think the design choices were made to a certain extent with that in mind, after all a lot of the game`s story revolves around identity and a big part of that is personal image.

    • @naufragia9561
      @naufragia9561 5 років тому +5

      I totally agree. I've even thought about it: Tifa is shy but dresses very sexy. Aerith is outgoing but dresses like a shy girl. It's almost as if they had flipped their wardrobes contrasting with their personalities.

    I love Tifa, initially drawn to "big boobs, long black hair, girl that kicks stuff good" and I still am, but also love delving into her character design and themes of not just her being a nurturing person, but also someone who's willing to throw down when a fight breaks out. I like that idea that the sports bra on her remake model is also thematic of repressing that motherly instinct for when you need to get pragmatic and rough! It might just be me, but I also thought the sports bra and thigh-high socks also add to the color of her character design, like accents around her white tank top and a line that directs you from her skirt (black) to her bright red shoes. I read through the Tales of Two Pasts novel they released about the game too and really like how they portray not just her, but also Aerith in their pasts and how they interacted and grew before we meet them. Thank you for this video!

    As a side note to this, from most of the marketing material I've looked up Final Fantasy VII really doesn't play up Tifas's boobs. FF7 was actually considered revolutionary for its marketing, because it had a huge impact on video games as an artistic medium. They did that by primarily only showing the most cinematic and dark moments primarily of Cloud, Aerith and Sephiroth. Which means Tifa was seldom shown and when she was it was tucked away or for a couple seconds at most.

    I saw a big uptick in outrage after the mistranslations were released and gaming websites started going on about it with headlines literally claiming that her breasts were shrunk...
    I think that they knew exactly what they were doing, they wanted the clickbait and were ragebaiting.
    Edit: Also, I'll just leave my comment to the Magical Meowstress too in regards to why I think that it matters and why I care about Tifa here...
    I don't necessarily disagree with you if we're talking about websites like One Angry Gamer.
    But seriously... I hate this trend of '' anti well-endowed women '' in the industry atm... I think that perhaps people need to ask whether it's okay that women have these extreme modesty standards put on them and that women who look a certain way aren't seen as '' marketable '', something that doesn't apply to male characters really.
    I also think that there is a problem with already existing characters having their breasts reduced or being covered up.
    No one really complains if a new female character wears pants or is small-chested, but when you take an already existing character and changes them like in such a way ( and usually it comes with comments about how she's '' more respectable '' now because of the breast reduction surgery which is fucked up in and of itself ), then I think that it sends bad messages to women who look like that.
    It basically sends the message that '' if you're well-endowed then you're not okay and you shouldn't exist ''...
    And it's why Tifa in particular shouldn't be reduced imo, because she's one of the last remaining iconic female characters that are genuinely well-written and well-endowed. Women like that should have characters to connect with too.
    If you gave Tifa a breast reduction surgery and the marketing surroundig it claimed that it made her '' better '' and '' more acceptable / respectable '' etc, you don't think that makes certain women feel really bad and is a pretty fucked up thing to do?
    I think that people tend to only look at this from a male lens, but forget that a lot of women love these characters too and connected with them both in childhood and adulthood.
    Edit: In regards to Tracer, my issue with that is that I think that the dad in question was just being an overly-concerned dad... Her pose wasn't even sexual imo and I think that it's a really worrisome road to walk down to perceive something that tame as '' sexual '' just because a woman does it. I also dunno where this idea comes from that she's asexual or something, just because she's not overtly lewd doesn't mean that she's not sexual.
    I think that it's mostly a matter of principle here, people don't like it when parents come in and start policing content.
    And it's the same with Tifa. I think that most people care about it because they don't want a female character to have her breasts be reduced because of '' muh morals '' and questionable reasons like that.
    People don't like it when things are censored or changed unless it's absolutely necessary.

    Just my opinion by I actually think Tifa looks a bit weord and skinny on FF7R, its like they were following the original PS1 design but now on a more realistic engine and her legs are so disproportionally thin. What pisses me off isnt the breasts because I can look that up quickly in any website that isnt meant for mainstream consumers, lets put it that way, but the fact that there is literally a more "built" version of her that was released for Dissidia NT the week after the FF7R trailer!!!

      She looks thinner than me, who doesn't exercise and has problem eating more than a bread for breakfast (yep).
      I'm not 100% sure, but her arms and legs might be thinner than Aerith's if not nearly identical.

    One thing i like about this reading is that it never tries to criticize her character design (Or if we were to treat her as a real person, criticize her body) for supposedly being impractical for doing martial arts and anime backflips and whatnot for simply having large breasts.
    A lot of the people arguing in favour of this more subdued design were acting like it was impossible for her to do martials arts and being a fighter while "having big anime tiddies". Having done a bit of martial arts and having known large-breasted women into that and similar hobbies, yes it does impose a slight disadvantage... but not one that can't be overcome with the right wear and I really don't like the rejection of her character because her body isn't supposedly "min-maxed" for her character archetype.

    Too many "why's". I thought this character was overrated too. She's cool on the inside of FFVII for PS, besides that, I mildly excepted her on Advent Children. Basically, she was just the sex appeal feminine girl back up interest because Aerith/Aeris kicked the bucket before the game was over. Before the 2nd disc was it? Can't remember, haven't played or attended to it since 98'. She's a bartender and the attendant of AVALANCHE who, looks kind'a dorky, she's presented kinda motherly, a lil' on the experienced side of being a brawler, a friend who could have possibly been a love interest of Cloud's if it would have went in that direction but it didn't. Besides that, the alternate spiritual predecessor of Rinoa Heartilly. Which after their LOVELESS story or play, when I played VII, the next game to come was FFVIII which was about love. And I had a lot of love inside of me. Before 8 I was playing my favorite RPG Star Ocean 2nd Story back in 1999 before VIII came out. Later, Square fused with Enix, the producer of Star Ocean the 2nd Story, Which became my favorite RPG of all time, and still is. At the time I suppose Final Fantasy was jealous since technically FF7 was my first RPG. I suppose Castlevania, Metroid, Gargoyle's Quest II, and Maniac Mansion didn't count.

    I was on board with this until the end. A strong argument was made for Tifa's boobs as a design element to fit her role and themes, but it doesn't matter if its changed? If that doesn't matter then are there any design element worth not changing?
    I am in the party that thinks FF7R Tifa looks great and nothing was changed about her at all aside from the addition of a sports bra and undershorts which they are reasonable.
    However, if an important design element of a character actually was changed for no good reason, I believe it is valid for fans to complain. Because an artist may have created it but that character belongs to the fans, the people that did pay attention to the story, that fell in love with the characters for their appearance, their personalities, and how they developed throughout the story as the fans rooted for them.
    I suppose the ending was meant for the people that are not really fans of Tifa as a character but instead just want to see big boobs. But if you really believe this element represents those important themes then isn't it valid for the real fans to complain?

    • @TBSkyen
      @TBSkyen  5 років тому

      She still has large breasts, the design wasn't substantively changed, except in such ways as are necessary to make it work in the new visual style (the remake also makes her eyes a lot smaller and changes her hairstyle around a bit, among dozens of other changes). She just put on a sports bra to avoid a Dead or Alive tiddy jiggling situation - and even with that on, she's still busty. So no, not really relevant to complain.

    To be honest, I was more concerned about the people that look up to characters like Tifa more then my own " "PERSONAL NEEDS(!)" "; I don't give 2 shits if she is busty or not
    Because there are women out there that actually do feel bullied and criticized do to being busty and they look up to Tifa because she is busty but she is a badass; and this is mostly coming from when Gijin Goomba talked about something like this way back when. But, after looking and seeing your perspective it makes a lot more sense. I even looked it up, and yeah; busty but is wearing a sports bra. I dont care much about big boobs but tifa's new design looks a lot more boring to me, I liked the bulkiness of a lot of the characters from the original because of the limitations at the time and with the remake they took away her elbow shield, big metal boxer gloves, big armored boots, etc and made her look like someone you could see on the street somewhere. Another thing I don't see anyone talking about is how they made her midriff way more exposed and she looks a lot less armored in general, and to top it all off thats not how boobs look in a sportsbra tifa's boobs look kinda weird in the remake. Like they took big boobs and shrunk em down instead of making them look like small boobs. Her whole redesign looks a lot more flat (no pun intended) and boring to me, especially when you compare it to the original which had a very interesting kinda modular design in my opinion, with the big focal points being the bulky metal gloves, the elbow guard, the big ponytail, big armored boots, and the torso all connected with bare skin sections. The redesign has a lot less soul in my opinion

    Good video and good points, but honestly I find the notion of Big Boobs=Motherhood to be more sexist than Big Boobs=Sexy. The latter is more honest, and the former doesn’t really define her role in the party. She’s supportive, sure, but so is Aerith. And she’s dependent on Cloud in certain ways the way he’s dependent on her, which is why I consider their relationship to be “equal partners”.

  • @WayneAnonymous

    Maybe this is a bit off the rails, but I'm asking myself this question for a while now. Why is there this obsession that every little detail of a character has to express something about their, themes, characterization, back story or whatever? I get that the visual design should go somewhat along the lines of their theme but I feel like this obsession of "polishing" and "streamlining" every aspect of a character is quite limiting and generates rather artificial and also somewhat generic characters rather than memorable ones.
    I'm a writer and if you ask me about for example the physique of one of my characters and why it is like it is, you will likely get an answer like: "Because that's how the character came to my mind". I have no specific reason for why my protagonist is flatchested, has dark brown hair or freckles. And I feel like, I don't have to have any explanation. Because these kind of things are completely irrelevant to what the character is and what she stands for. Sexyness/Uglyness whatever should only become worthy to discuss when it goes against characterization or character concept. Otherwise it should be completely indifferent if a character is attractive or not. I don't know, just some random thoughts.

    • @TBSkyen
      @TBSkyen  5 років тому +6

      Again, I'm a lot less interested in creator intent than in trying to draw interesting meaning from the work as presented. I'm really not arguing that auteurs "should" inject one politique or another into the work, I'm arguing the intent of the auteur is of tertiary importance to the readings available from the audience's perspective.

    • @WayneAnonymous
      @WayneAnonymous 5 років тому +2

      @@TBSkyen Yeah, I understand. But still, even us as an audience have that obsession of every miniscule detail having to have a deeper meaning or having to be "on theme". I'm not sure, if I am getting across what I mean. I feel like there are made big deals out of things that might actually not be that important. In Tifa's case the chest might actually matter, but I feel like many times we unnecessarily discuss for example physical appeal when it actually is not that important for the character concept itself. For example, what does it matter if a magic student in search for some kind of forgotten knowledge has a big or small chest or if she is attractive or not? Her physique is nothing of major importance to her concept
      Ugh, I really feel I'm not getting my point across. What I mean is,that I feel from time to time we go overboard when interpreting character design, especially when it comes to attractive-/sexyness. Not everything about a character has to have a deep connection to his/her concept. You know what I mean?

    • @TBSkyen
      @TBSkyen  5 років тому +4

    Something interesting about Tifa that I don't think gets a lot of attention is just how little sense it makes for her to be a martial artist, and no it's not because she's a woman.
    The stated reason in game for Tifa learning to fight initially was to do the dangerous job of being a mountain guide in Nibelheim, and the game very generously gives us a look at what that entails and the kinds of creatures she would encounter while doing this job. There is no way a sane person would see the kind of threats they'll be going up against and say "The best option to defend myself here is my bare hands", especially since that list contains "actual house-sized dragons". I don't think it really has anything to say about the character either: maybe that fighting with one's bare hands can be interpreted as being self-reliant, and that's fair... but I think we can do better.
    (Let's be clear, Tifa being a martial artist doesn't take me out of the game, this is basically just me fixing what isn't really all that broken)
    Let's give Tifa a gun. It's a solid weapon to give the character that I think represents her at every stage of her life. She lives in a small town in the mountains, a rifle would be a pretty standard survival tool for hunting and personal defense, it's a fitting weapon for a mountain guide... and when we meet her in the present she's the proprietor of a bar in the slums of sector 7: You can bet she's got a shotgun behind the counter in case things get ugly... and on top of that she's a fighter in a resistance group against Shin-ra, she's going to want every edge she can get rather than burdening herself and her team with the disadvantage of fighting hand-to-hand. That being said, do I think guns are a perfect fit for her? Maybe... I'm pretty sure given enough time I could come up with something better, but unless I'm missing something I just don't think making her the monk was the best possible choice.
