    A glut of electric cars are launching at the moment, and most are pretty fancy with futuristic styling, bold colour options and equally out-there names on their bootlids. And then there’s the MG5.
    It’s easy to overlook the MG5 but if you do look past it then we reckon you’re missing out. Yes, its styling is pretty unassuming, yes there are electric cars with better ranges and more performance, but that’s not what the MG5 is all about.
    See what Tom Ford thinks about the UK's first all-electric estate car in our in-depth review.

    I’ve driven one of these and was very impressed. It’s fast, comfortable and composed on British roads. Feels well screwed together too. Might not have the look and feel of more premium brands but it’s two thirds of the price!

    Drove one today. Footwell a bit cramped as the floorpan a bit high with the battery underneath. If you're tall you can't raise the seat too much either - there would be roof space to sit higher but as the rear view mirror doesn't push up high enough it could badly block your view forward so you have to find the sweet spot for seat height and that's a little bit go-karty (low) especially if you are used to an SUV. Still, I did find a compromise that worked and I'm 6'4".The seats are comfy and supportive and not actually too low when you're getting in, and it drives very nicely to be fair. The speaker quality is absolutely terrible for audio. But for £10k cheaper than an eNiro I guess you can't complain (it'll annoy me tho). Not masses of places to put anything once you've filled the cup holders (no roof cubby for sunnies) but a couple of cheeky slots either side of the transmission (by your knee) to pop your phones - because you won't be looking at them while driving will you! Reversing camera good. Regen a bit weedy. Good value.

    Killing time whilst my wife's MG ZS 1.8 we've had from new was having it's annual MoT test ( it passed ), I wandered along to the close by MG Motor Showroom. Lots of MG EVs there but what caught my eye were two MG5s in the main showroom display area. Had a close look at both.
    My own daily driver for the past six years has been an MG ZT-T 1.8T. A very useful workhorse and still a nice place to be and drive as ordinary cars go. Lets face it, most cars are ordinary. We also have and nine year old MG6 1.8 TSE GT in the family fleet. These Chinese MGs are much better "ordinary" cars than for whatever reason, UK car consumers we led to believe they were by some of the Motor Media journos. My hands on experience of three MG6s now shows these are indeed much better means of getting about than some would have us believe when they first appeared.
    Based on what I saw and the favourable reports on UA-cam, if and when my old ZT-T needs to be replaced ~ It's an estate ... like the MG5 .. whatever happened to the Estate car? Killed off by the multiplicity of SUV/Crossover lookalikes which now infest UK roads. None of those appeal and never will. The MG5 does.
    These Chinese built MGs appear to be selling in my UK neck of the woods and elsewhere in many other parts of the World too. My immediate next door neighbour recently had a charging point fixed on his garage wall. A new shiny MG ZS EV is now parked there. It carries a personal plate which previously was on a Lexus and Mercedes... Think about that. Car consumers like them.
    The "Electric" MG5 is the nearest car to an Old School Rover 75 "Tourer" or the MG ZT-T "Estate" to be offered so far to my way of thinking. Suits me Sir ... Double 👍..👍from me ..

    Its a great affordable EV and drives well, be careful quoting the 7 Year Parts and Labour warrantee, I'd recommend reading the warrantee policy on MG owners site, 7 years covers battery and hole in bodywork due to rust, most things are 36 months or Millage related.

    Let's face it - we're all missing the estate/tourer'/wagon car form factor after realising most lifestyle SUV's and crossovers are bulky on the outside and a bit cramped on the inside - rather like an 'inverse TARDIS effect'. Was hoping someone would make an EV estate car. Never expected MG to be the one to do it. Hoping other manufacturers will follow.

    • @MarthaMansbridge
      @MarthaMansbridge 3 роки тому

      James Dean model sales would disagree - they put this stuff in them because that’s what the majority want. When you haven’t got much of a brand presence, price and specification are your two biggest plays. It’s precisely what Hyundai/KIA did and it didn’t harm their market share. I know what you’re getting at though but the sad fact is that the batteries of EVs are so expensive that shaving a bit off here and there specification wise still means you’re paying massively over the odds and probably feeling shortchanged with your base spec £20k supermini EV.

    • @bjrn-steinarhanssen2102
      @bjrn-steinarhanssen2102 3 роки тому

      That would be nice for us who do not like all the electronics, and multimedia solutions.
      But a basecar would be perfect for smaller buisnisses, and mabye even rentals.
      Allso, it will be more interesting for those who is sceptical about electric cars.
      If the price is low, they can be more willing to try the car, and perhaps upgrade the standard.
      Lada did it, and they where not successfull, but on the otherhand, their cars where 20 years old, by design.

    Looks like a VW from the front and then a mix of other brands from every other angle (Jag XF chrome strip on the back?), but all out of proportion. Why the Chinese paid for the MG brand I'll never know because anyone with respect for what the UK brand used to stand for will no doubt be offended to see the logo on what is being shipped over now.

      I think MG have picked up the slack VW left. I mean I think VW has dropped the ball on the ID3... It looks cheap and tacky inside, with touch sensitive buttons that would be a nightmare. They charge so much for it still though, and claim it'll be the "New beetle"... I think MG have the chance to be the new affordable mass market EVs.
      Personally I like the more traditional estate look, reminds me of early noughties cars in a good way. I love noughties cars 🤣

SUVs represent everything that is wrong with modern cars where every parameter is moved backwards like centre of gravity, wind resistance, weight, energy consumption, reduced crumple zones due to vehicle height instead of length!!!
