Still own this. 20 years later I’m blown away by how amazing this music is. Some of the most important shit to ever go down. Words fall short. M.IT.B. changed my life.
Power violence is so weird to me. Some bands are slow as fuck and some make grindcore look like sludge. Even the fast parts in this record aren’t that much faster than regular hardcore, yet it still fits so perfectly in the powerviolence genre. Fantastic shit.
Big factor plays into timing and placement of the beats that gives it a more aggressive sound. Example you could have one hardcore esq riff that you can play for half the time and then sequence it into a fill or blast beat vs playing a riff for double time and then cutting immediately into a blast beat, if it opens up the perspective at all
Yeah it’s easy to see how punk has developed into a thousand sub-genres. Even within powerviolence there’s different variations but it’s all great and sounds like powerviolence to me. You have the Infest/Crossed Out/Lack of Interest stuff, the Endless Blockade/Man Is The Bastard/Bastard Noise stuff, the Despise You/Hatred Surge stuff. And of course…..Spazz lol
To me powerviolence is the auditory embodiment of ADHD on meth. The sudden tempo changes, fast and short songs, vocalizing so much in so little time. All in the most aggressive and in your face way possible. A good powerviolence record is like the soundtrack to some fucked up angry emotional breakdown.
This fucking slays, back in 92 this is what kept it going while everyone else was brainwashed by Nirvana and the rest of the grunge poser parade. Im glad grunge faded away while the underground bowed to no fads and raged on.
Although they didnt invent it Crossed Out defined the powerviolence sound. Favourite MITB tracks here and first time they mixed in noise/powerelectronics I think.
I'm partial to the Man is the Bastard side. While I feel that both sides have their merits, overall I am more partial to that side as I find it more pleasing and more in line with my particular tastes. I definitely understand that others might connect more with the Crossed Out side though - and I respect that. Jut the fact that there are any differences at all in the two sides, length of the songs, different lyrics, etc, whatever will mean that there's a chance that different people will find that one or another aspect of the individual sides will be more or less important to them, in terms of what they need or value in art, the members of the individual bands, for instance, probably connect very deeply to their own songs, in a different way than they hear the songs of the other band on this split. They would have to speak for themselves of course, but I for one would like to hear what they have to say.
I've loved MITB since the olden days, but Crossed Out demolished EVERYTHING. Sorry. Just close your eyes and pay attention to that shit. The Dbeats, the Blast beats, the Sludge shit, the Lyrics, the way the guitar and bass sound like a fucking bomb. The pissed fucking off vocals. It's literally a deadly bomb on one side of a 7inch record.
@@dannytun honestly crossed out and MITB are pretty hard to compare musically, they both have a lot of different shit going on imo, kinda goes to show that powerviolence isn’t rly a cohesive genre but a particular attitude
One of the best 7"s. Along side; Neanderthal - Fighting Music, No Comment - Downsided, Apt. 213 - Vacancy, Escaltion Anger - Violent Breed. I'd list more. But, personally these cuts were pivotal. Cheers!
I was thinking about doing one-man powerviolence with guitar, vocals and weird bitcrushed/lo fi synths through a DAW adding obscure samples and calling the genre "Cyberviolence". Not sure if it's already been done. Please reply if you think it's a bad/good idea and why. Thanks!
BOTH sides recorded by Barnes of MAN IS THE BASTARD. I was there and witnessed it first hand. A BEAUTIFUL memory 🙏💀🙏

I feel like the abrupt and almost random tempo changes characterises powerviolence more than anything
Looking for something like the first song, namely the bass and more hardcore elements. Recommendations?

Crossed Out did a great job on their part, but Man is the Bastard nailed it.
I prefer the Crossed Out side. Both sides are good though.
