- The band TOTO is already celebrating its 40th band anniversary. Her massive 80s hit "Africa" warmed hearts all over the world. Monitoring Engineer Paddi Krause and FOH Engineer Ken Freeman give EventElevator a brief insight into the current live technology and touring life with the music legends. Lighting Director Daniel O'Brian shows how he gives the band a consistent and Rock'n'Roll oriented lighting style in a festival situation.

Saw them live October 2019. Amazing show. The live mix sounded like a mastered CD. That's what happens when amazing musicians and gifted engineers work together. So good.

Toto is absolute precision. You will not find a tighter live band then this lineup. Ken does a hell of a job at the FOH for these guys.

I remember seeing them at The Cleveland Agora for a live broadcast on WMMS radio, they had the FOH with a splitter on stage to send each mic input to a mixing console upstairs at Agency Recording studio. They sounded great in house and on air. Mention this to them, i'm sure they will get a chuckle. Thanks for sharing with an old sound guy from the 80s.

Toto was by far one of the best sounding bands keeping in mind all those mics and input sources on stage. Managing this is INSANE especially at the Rock Volume they play at. So kudos to all the guys behind the scenes getting this monster up and running and delivering 100% quality.
Believe it or not, the stage sound is really not loud at all anymore. Once they went to in-ears they really brought it down.
I saw this 40th anniversary show on their second stop in Seattle, front row VIP seats right in front of Luke, man what a night that was! Toto was great as usual and you guys are first class too making a great band even more memorable, thanks for all your great work :-)
Great Video. In many of your videos people are just briefly describing what equipment they are using and „how creative they are“ but here there is real tipps and explanations of how people work.
I would like to see more videos like this one!

This is interesting to me, I love the sound reinforcement especially live and ironically the actual point that I was hooked on feeling the music was 1978 I was 15 yr old and got to experience a one gig (for Toto) “apprentice rhode “ setting up at our school . Even way back then and a small scale venue I was amazed how much gear and cabling that fit into those trucks and all had to be unloaded set up tuned , ( do the show) tear down pack up load up (in the right order and trailer) . It wasn’t long in fact that summer I saved up and bought my first PA with Crown amps and Klipsch industrial Lascala’s , fast forward 43 or so years later and career in construction industry I shelved the sound gig and sold the gear for a station wagon and bunk beds . If some one ask me about this pandemic I tell them one thing good came out of it would be …. A change or heart and a stimulus check , yes I took the money jumped on eBay and found my old Lascala’s , not the actual same pair but better, this set came with added Bass Bins so down the rabbit hole we go , currently remodeling the barn for sound stage and backdrop , regrading the pasture with better contour more amphitheater like with grass ? Didn’t take long for my wife to connect the dots .
I just told her , if you build it they will come … “the vineyard sound stage of dreams “
So now I’m on this journey to get up to some level to learn the new sound engineering tech ?

RE: Phase coherence of the drum mic elements: not available in consoles back in the day. It was all analogue all the time. It IS a great time to be doing live sound. The tools available now are awesome!

This was great! I really enjoy your videos but this was one was one of the best for audio guys. They really gave us a break down of how they use their equipment. It'd be cool to see people give us more tips and tricks like this. I'm a lighting guy and it would have been cool to see the LD's busking layout. Keep out the great work!

Super koncert zespołu Toto ,mam go na DVD i CD ponad dwie godziny oglądania koncertu w bardzo dobrej jakości dźwięku i obrazu.
I just love the fact that the turkey adding the subtitles has no real undestanding of the german accent when speaking English - this is reverse subtitling, where you have to listen to the audio to figure out what the subtitles are saying....brilliant. And Paddi, as a drummer for 10 years more than Toto have been aound, we dont tune drums, we tension drums to a pitch we want, but they are not tuned as such. A good sound engineer just amplifies the chosen drum sounds, most engineers struggle of amplify nice open drums and insist of damping them with tape, moongel etc. when if they were at good at their job, they should be able to compensate on the desk for any frequencies they really want to kill. Again, that's over 50 years of engineering experience from the receiving end as a drummer.

Young / new engineers should study the mic choice, placement and particularly the distance of the mics from the source! This all looks really nicely done. With the greatest respect, I don't see the need to delay the drum close mics, though. Phase issues between the overheads will not occur with distances 3x greater than the close mic to the source, and I find the delay is important for building a live and natural sound. It's really great to hear the FOH engineer saying he's using minimal compression - for dynamic bands this is key! I just tuck in the peaks and ride the rest of it. On a 6/7 piece band I'm touring with, I also just use one gate, on the kick - I wouldn't use any if most systems didn't crank the subs so high. Depends on the genre though. Nice video!

Lights are the same colour in every environment. Sound is way more challenging. And nobody goes home whistling the lights.

being a light AND soundguy I way usually more fascinated by the light show. or in other words: I've seen better lightshows than I heard good sound-guys.
When has the band member's wife ever came to the lighting console and said "There isn't enough blue light on my husband"?
Never.
Every night a sound engineer has management, wives/girlfriends/boyfriends/ (ESP OTHER ENGINEERS) on his back telling him they could make it sound better.
Tell me one time where some friend of the band has ever said "I could make them look better...?"

He says the console is so great and then he goes on tell how great their support is and he knows the support techs by name. How often does the thing go bananas? He seems to have a lot of experience with the thing going bananas. Is that normal for Avid consoles?
In my mindset remembering (and mentioning) names of people you work with is called respect. The console rarely ever goes bananas, in fact, I’ve never had a show stopper or anything like that. I do find myself in a position where ‚unusual‘ features are needed or complex demands need to be pleased, so I reach out and see what’s up. Furthermore you really get to know the people if you’re beta testing their firmware or plugins. Or simply if they swing by to visit you at a show and hang out..

Best band ever Live. The FOH guy is one if the best. Glad they got rid of the previous Lighting director who decided to display his multiple personality disorder during setups. He meant well but the rush to do a setup was slowed down with his decision to dress up as earl the truck driver and talk smack. If any of you guys worked with them you know exactly what i'm talking about

They always sounded FANTASTIC when I saw them. And I’ve seen them 2-3 times per tour in the past 8 years. ;)
I saw them un Locarno 2010 also and they sound Fantastic but in that time Simon was the drummer and more...

@@paddikrause9304 Thanx for the great video btw. The only thing I had when I did monitors was phase reverse. I even had some reverse cables to use on a specific output or wedge. A common trick when a drummer couldn't hear his bassdrum was to put it outof phase. (Bassdrumhead as a membrane versus wedge as a membrane.) Thanx again! Wish I still worked in livesound.
PS you seem like a greatguy to do some seminars on monitor mixing.
It would have been great if Lenny Castro had been heard during the concert in Gelsenkirchen, it was only in Africa that the FOH thought that maybe he should do his job right ... and I was sitting directly at the FOH!

Sounds all nice… but the reality is: I was on the concert in Stuttgart and this was one of the worst live-sounds I ever experienced. Everything was just totally wrong. The PA-System (GSL) just „honked“ like crazy in the 300Hz region. There was totally no HF coming out of the PA. The esses of the audience singing along were more transparent than everything delivered from the PA. Everybody I met there was complaining about the horrible sound, the whole concert was just a single agony. Very very disappointing!
And just listen to the 40 tours live album, it is the same crappy sound. Totally not comparable to earlier live albums like livefields from the 90s. So what is going on here?
It was probably due to the person that deployed the system. Didn't sound like they were traveling with PA on this one. There is no reason GSL should sound bad.
20+ minute video and the lighting gets 2 minutes? Bullshit.
