    My late dad LOVED Stollen.
I always hated fruit cake: it was as dense as concrete.
But a local Swedish bakery began to make it and so I bought a stollen for dad. He raved so much about how good it was that I ate a piece of it. I had to agree: it was much better than any fruitcake that I'd ever tasted before.

I could taste the entire video! Love all these cakes! The ones I missed in the list were Donauwelle and Bienenstich… oh and there are soo many more… My grandmother and especially my mother baked the best cakes! I baked my first cake when I was six and my daughter is already helping me with the baking, she is two… I am sure when she is six she will be able to produce her first full cake so we can all enjoy it for Kaffee und Kuchen! 😊
There is always enough time for a slice of cake!

My heritage is suppose to be German, my last name from my father is Yoder which was spelled joder. I'd love to visit Germany my son would absolutely love to go there maybe one day we can. Its so hard to get to Europe from the United States but my husband and I travel to Mexico often so maybe we can just fly to Germany instead of Mexico lol. And I love your accent and your a very beautiful woman and how do you stay in such good shape with all that delicious food and meat with creams and them cakes. Think of me when your eating that wonderful food and I make a lot of potato salad all spring and summer. I use potatoes, mayo, pickles, onion, mustard and boiled eggs plus salt and pepper. That recipe was passed on down to me and I'm the only one who can make it in my family and its delicious 😋 have a wonderful day and thank you for showing us how you fix and eat German food and how to say it 😊 my husband gets his Mexican food i make then he usually gets about 4 German dishes he doesn't realize what it truly is lol.

Oh Deena, thats great that you are keeping the German traditions and cook some German food :) And thank you for all compliments, I try to keep my life in good balance - one day a cake another a salad. And I run almost every day, that helps a lot. I keep my fingers crossed that soon it will be safe for us to travel again and you can visit Germany :)

So to clarify things, we both grew up in Frankfurt, where we currently live and work. I have lived in many different countries, including UK, Australia, Poland and Italy and my accent is a mixture of those. I also take pronunciation classes to make sure that the tourists don't have problems to understand me. I work full time as a guide in Frankfurt and sharing German traditions is my job.

My favorite in Unterfranken was Zwetschgenkuchen, plum cake. It was not too sweet. Most of the cakes are not too sweet. That is why one can enjoy more than one piece. My second favorite is Stollen. Also, not too sweet. When my German friends came to visit in the U.S., someone gave them brownies. Later, I overheard them saying, "Zu suess." Too sweet! Also, in Germany, I really appreciated and developed a taste for real whipped cream.

My grandfather, whose parents were born in Germany and Switzerland, used to make a wonderful deep fried pastry. He would drop the dough in boiling fat and it brown as a wavy free form light and airy pastry which he would sprinkle with granulated sugar. Instead of a birthday cake he always made the number of the pastries as my years of life. Forgive my phonetic spelling of what he always called them "fascnot kickley". Any idea what this is? I would so love to make these for my family as a reminiscent tribute to my Grandpa.

I think there are only few germans who do "Kaffee und Kuchen". In fact I don't know any.
I am sure that people use baking mixes, otherwise they wouldn't be sold, but I highly discourage everyone to do it. So people really eat whipped cream with the "dry" cakes? I wonder. I can only say that I don't know anyone, but I have seen people eat strawberry cakes (Erdbeerkuchen) with cream. Käsekuchen with a yeast dough? NO NO NO!!! The typical Käsekuchen either has no dough at all or it has a very thin layer of "Mürbeteig". I swear I have never seen a Käsekuchen recipe with a yeast dough.

I am sorry to hear that the „Kaffee und Kuchen“ Tradition is not kept alive among your family and friends. I always hoped that showing people how beautiful the German traditions are will make them keep those alive. We obviously come from completely different regions, grew up with different traditions, we buy our cakes by different backers and we eat them differently. Which I respect. I hope that you will respect our traditions too.

    • @wmf831
      @wmf831 3 роки тому

@@cooking-the-world of course I respect it. I just have my doubt that this is a "tradition" throughout all of Germany. Maybe a nice habit or custom for some people, maybe even in some regions. But not really a tradition I would say. I think it might have been a thing in the 50s/60s, but nowadays I dont think it still is. Btw I grew up in NRW for 26 years, then lived in the US for some years, and for almost 30 years I now live in Bavaria except for 2 years in Italy. However, I have family also throughout Frankonia and Swabia and - of course - I can only derive this from my own experiences and the places I lived, and the people I know and am surrounded by, so it's only "my" experience. Kaffee und Kuchen might be your experience, but is it really a tradition? In my view: No. But of course a nice thing to do occasionally.

Bienenstich is considered TORTE, so it's included in the Multilayered cake video. Sandkuchen is also nice :)

Nope. I have never promised one. But in Google there is plenty of them.

      I really like the accent.

It's not hurting my ears, but many times I find it hard to understand. My English is american, as I have lived, studied and worked there. Nowadays I am interacting with many British people and their accent of course is different again. I am assuming it is an eastern european accent, probably polish. So we all have our accents. What bugs me is that she is always talking about "we in Germany" and claiming to be the expert on all things German. I think "in Germany" would suffice. I am Germany and I am no expert on Germany, because Germany is way too diverse and customs and foods really can vary a lot throughout, as I have lived in different parts o Germany. I am sure some people do "coffee and cake", but it is not something that "we in Germany" do. I would say that some people do it, but the majority probably doesn't.

If you want to give me proper feedback you will need to be clearer than that.
