I had a performance planned last Friday and this is one of the practice rehearsals that I did for it. I thought of adding Strega, a similar sized instrument, for adding textures and noise to the sharp resonant techno of the Erebus. Digitakt works as a midi sequencer and double-mono mixer, adding fx to both devices.
This practice session starts with the Strega, which I consider to be one of the most inspiring instruments I’ve ever played. This one-cable patch is the simple “feedback” patch where I can send the output back into the external input in order to create feedback. It really feels like I’m playing a heavily distorted guitar and standing in front of a proper 100w tube amp. What is astonishing with Strega is that every section is connected with each other and the touch plates add all sorts of weird modulation to their destinations.
Digitakt is also sending a midi sequence to the Erebus. I found this to be superior to the previous video where I was triggering Erebus with its own LFO. I can now have access to Digitakt’s delay and reverb which work really well together with the noisy analogue echo delay inside the Erebus. I’m still sending the envelope into the filter on Erebus, like in the previous video and I do a similar kind of routine of going through all kinds of ways I can mess with the sequence. The trick is to mess with the sequence and then bring it back slightly different each time. And then mess it up again in a different way as well. I got some new sounds as well that surprised me. This live performance is actually a bit too long but it was a practice session, the idea was to explore all the possibilities I had with such a minimal set up. Recording it helped me focus really well. And since it was a fresh idea I was really into it. I knew before I started that I’m not going to do that again and that gave me the right mindset to approach it.
The actual performance went really well. It was shorter (22min) and even more focused. I was the 3rd artist performing and the audience was already warmed up with a cool ambient set and a proper feedback mixer noise set. I thought starting with the Strega would not be a good idea, so I went straight into banging with the Erebus and that worked well. Bringing the noise from Strega later on and combine it with Erebus’ sequence (something I didn’t do a lot in this video) made people reacte positively. I also found a frequency with the Erebus’ filter that was resonating with the venue, creating huge impact sounds which is something I would normally prepare during a soundcheck. I hope this whole process is useful for someone out there. It was definitely a trip for me.
