    I cannot express my joy at learning Ververts will adopt other monkey's babies. One series I watched on here said they didn't and orphaned babies usually die.

    • @mark.fergus
      @mark.fergus 4 роки тому +8

      This is the beautiful thing about vervets and the reason we are able to rescue and integrate them into a new troop so quickly. Of course they all have their individual personalities, but in general the females have strong maternal instincts and want to care for babies. It means they are in human care for very little time; in some cases only a few days.

    • @mark.fergus
      @mark.fergus 4 роки тому +9

      @Elite Soulfly Within any vervet troops, allomothering is very common. Female troop members who don't have babies will look after another's baby temporarily, giving that mother a chance to rest. They are also very very protective of any baby within their troop. I believe this is the basis for their ability and instinct to foster orphans long-term. Of course, not having natural babies in the troop may strengthen this instinct. This certainly seems to be the case within the Skunkey troop, who are fostering orphans for the first time.

    • @lyndakehler6619
      @lyndakehler6619 4 роки тому +2

      I believe it depends on the type of monkey. Vervets seem very family orientated and are great mothers whereas some macaques are very mean to their babies and bite them and push them away.

    • @dragonbynight

      It says above that Barney walks on two extremities instead of four because of a bite between his shoulders. But I've seen videos (where people have them in their homes) of monkeys being 'punished' they call it when it's abuse, for going back on all four instead of walking upright. It should be illegal for people to buy monkeys and keep them in their homes. Some people just go out in the wild and steal baby monkeys from their mothers. I feel so bad for these little monkeys being abused and tortured and no laws to protect them. When the monkey gets bigger or they are just tired of taking care of it, then they get rid of it...in many sad ways. The lucky ones are given to this Vervet Monkey Sanctuary. It's wonderful to see so many caring people there.

    What happens to the male vervets when they reach sexual maturity? It is my understanding that they are normally forced to go join another troop or start their own troop.

    • @Suzetteofthewest
      @Suzetteofthewest 4 роки тому +4

      Yes. When they reach sexual maturity they will be a bit aggressive and very playful. The majority will want to leave their maternal troop but if they don't they will be forced out.
      This is an Excellent question. I would love to know how this works at the Vervet Forest. *Dave if you could answer this question on how the males leave the maternal troop at the Vervet Forest that would be great.* Thank you!

      As the males are vasectomised we dont have the same kind of problems as with a wild troop, so we monitor the aggression and only if necessary will we move a male and introduce him to a new troop

    Poor widdle Barney - no question he is injured - so strange you were unable to find it upon examination - I'd say xrays were in order under the circumstances, to diagnose and thus treat whatever hurts him so much. Hate to see any animal in pain, and that peculiar behavior is definitely from pain.
    Dave, I very much would be gratified to know how you discovered that foster moms would adopt orphans, and how you discovered the system of giving the babies "milk" in the boxes meant to size them out at a year of age. You are a genius! How did you discover these amazing things? Also, the soy milk seems a very strange solution to formula for the babies, particularly since it is under examination at this time for creating female hormones in males, and having to do with menopause and hormonal changes in women. How do you account for this being the best for the babies? Why not cow, goat, sheep, camel, any kind of real milk for them? No criticism here - not one bit - just really desiring to know all these things.
    Thank you for your brilliance and dedication in caring for these monkeys, and the amazing solutions you have discovered in continuing their care! Thank you for all you do for them!

    • @VervetMonkey
      @VervetMonkey  4 роки тому +1

      Monkeys seemed concerned over any infant, many years ago we use to wait until they where around a year old and go with them into an enclosure, which meant the monkeys had to be habituated to humans and caused many problems, we later tried just bringing 1 female that was very humanized in with us and the babies and slowly the system developed. Soy contains phytoestrogens, or plant-based estrogens its not the same as animal based estrogen which you actually get in milk, the information you find is from milk companies trying to make sure people continue to steal milk from cows, infant soya milk formula does not cause diarrhea in babies its more palatable and does not try turn you into a big fat cow which its made to do as its for cows.
