Hybrid is $13,100 more expensive than the vti x7.(59,900 -46,800) but only saving 1.8 li per 100km (5.5 vs 7.3). Given I drive 15,000km a year and @$2.1 per li, I'd save $567 a year. SO It'll take 23+years to recoup my $13,100 😅. Plus hybrid might need new battery in 10 years. Sometimes I wonder why people are going crazy over hybrids especially the RAV4 instead of going straight to EV.
If they had actual 2023 tech and had a PHEV then you wouldn't be spending any petrol most days. Like Toyota they are years behind however and still have a 2007 tech mild hybrid. Ridiculous.

The unstressed 2.0L Atkinson motor should last a lot longer than the 1.5T This CR-V really needs a 2.0T given its bulk. I’d worry a bit about the 1.5T’s head gasket problem between cylinders 2 and 3 if it’s pushed it too hard too often, or have they fixed that in Japan build motors?
Comparing apples to oranges there, the difference from the x7 to eHev include but not limited to: * Black leather seats * Heated front seats * Leather steering wheel * Built in navigation * Roof rails * Smart key card * Panoramic sun roof * 10.2" driver display * Auto mirror tilt on reverse * Ambient lighting * 12x Bose speakers with subwoofer * Sport driving mode * LED active cornering lights * Adaptive driving beams * 19" wheels (compared to x7's 18") * and of course the 2 motor Hybrid system * eHev is also different on the exterior in terms of looks, the front grille is larger, rear exhaust tips, singular paint colour across the vehicle (rather than black plastic outline), which makes is look much better
One of the hardest vehicles to get hold of in the States at the moment, in massive demand. Be interesting to see if Aussie’s (who have deserted Honda over the last 5 years, particularly since moving to Agency model) make it one of the top sellers. Personally I’d have one over the equivalent RAV4.
Because competition is putting bigger and bigger infotainment screens, every car company is drawn into a screen size escalation war. This isn't a home theater system. Driving is safer with less distraction and more tactile knobs and buttons which can be used without looking, just muscle memory.
Hell I remember a time when their was a war against driving with a phone or any kind of distraction and yet know where getting TV screens put into cars lol.
It should have been selling like hotcakes but looks like the high price and no AWD availability was enough for the opposite to happen. Honda should introduce hybrid tech in lower models too. It’s a real shame because the CRV hybrid is really nice in my opinion.

Disclaimer: I have a T33 MY2023 Nissan X-Trail Ti AWD NA Petrol CVT. Ok now that is out of the way, I somewhat agree with Matt here on a few things, one I don't agree with is that the Outlander has a better Hybrid option, technically the X-Trail E:Power and Outlander PHEV don't compete but if you look at the non electric spec the X-Trail E:Power does offer AWD (electric not mechanical) while the Outlander PHEV is limited to FWD only. Ok as for the new CR-V? Mazda and Nissan had a baby and its called the CRV and Mitsubishi want there interior design back while Nissan want there rear passenger 90d doors back. Overall the CR-V is fine in this class but again there are better options if you are prepared to wait or look elsewhere for other specific features and options.
The 1.5 turbo "oil diluter" is still the main affordable engine choice. No way. Before anyone says the engine doesn't oil dilute in Australia, yes it bloody does.
@@therightcar Yes, own a CRV with significant oil dilution in the caution and danger range (lab checked oil samples). Honda Australia officially doesn't recognise OD even though it occurs worldwide in the same engine. We really must be the lucky country (sarcasm). Reports from many temperate regions and Saudi Arabia, so it's not just a cold weather phenomenon that they like to promote. They just go through the motions of testing and changing fuel injectors (that are basically fine). The problem is some of the earlier versions (17-22) of this engine are flawed, and the fix is possibly engine replacement, which they are not going to do. Beware of this engine. CRV appears to be the worst diluter as it has the most boost, 18.5 lbs. Pull out a dipstick on any of these engines and chances are you will be able to smell petrol. Maybe Honda has fixed the engine for these new models; who knows, I certainly won't be a guinea pig.
Having done some soccer runs, more seats means more pickups and dropoffs. If your family is a rare +5 then people mover is better option unless you really need 7 seats and AWD in which case need to stepup a class eg Highlander, CX9 etc.
I have to admire Honda's efforts in keeping up with the ever-expanding SUV segment, but I agree with your comments Mat on the interior, which to a Civic owner is a let down. I actually prefer the previous generation dash layout; it seems Honda HQ had an over supply of Civic dashboards and figured, 'what the heck, may as well use them all up..'.
Nice review, with your customary thoroughness, Matt. At the end, I couldn't help but think that from the side, with that body crease just below the window line, the CR-V reminded me of the previous -generation Outlander. I know that 7-seats are very much sought-after, but I can't see anyone taller than Peter Dinklage being happy back in the rear-most seat. And yes, Honda seems to have made some strange decisions regarding child seats though there are some clever decisions also. I won't be buying one for the simple reasons that the leasing payments for the CR-V will be more than 30% higher than an Outlander Exceed Tourer PHEV due to tax breaks (so I've been told), plus the Outlander will have superior all-road capability.
No AWD on Hybrid is a massive let down. Have Honda learnt nothing from Toyota's success? Very nice other than that, and lack of a spare tyre on Hybrid.
I agree, FWD with so much instant torque is not good at all especially in damp conditions. At least the X-Trail E:Power offers (electric) AWD as does the RAV4 (again electric based) AWD Hybrid should you want that extra ability and more optimised torque distribution.
Shame the Rav4 doesn't offer a 7 seater. I could make do with just two rows of seats by disowning one of my four children, but I think I'll get a CR-V or X-Trail 7 seater instead.
Certainly on the retirement list but hybrid's lack of full-size spare makes country travel a gamble. VTi-L 2WD is probably the best bet but then I'd like a sunroof, which isn't an option, so playing the mix-'n-match game is hard with Honda. Hello Neil, Just out of interest, there is now the VTi X+, which is the VTi X 2WD but with Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert added, currently $44,700 drive-away ($800 more than the X) and the L is $48,800 drive-away. Previously I would not have considered the VTi X due to not having these essential items. The L does have some good additional features over the X+ for the extra $4,100. What is very impressive with the 5 seater CR-V is the amount of boot space, along with having a full size spare. With it having a sliding 2nd row seat and having it as far forward as possible, the boot space is absolutely enormous; lots of room for luggage. Interestingly, if one is mainly doing country driving, the 1.5 litre may be just as good as the hybrid. According to ADR fuel consumption, for highway the FWD 1.5 litre does 5.8 L/100km, whilst the Hybrid also does 5.8 L/100km. Both have a 57 litre tank. Cheers.
Hi Matt, looking at a new SUV after our 10 year old IX35 which we love, Would you go for the CRVRSeHEV or CX5Turbo, don't like that the CRV has no spare tyre whilst the CX5 uses the toggle wheel for the bigger screen, yuck, although the head up display is good on the CX5? City and country driving, so appreciate your thoughts? Hybrid Rav4 with 2.5 yr wait is out of the question unfortunately and is Xtrail hybrid worth considering, cheers.

Hi Matt, Do you recommend petrol CRV among its competitors? Basically CX-5, Tucson, Outlander, X-trail and RAV4 petrol ? Im asking in terms of engine, drive ability, fuel efficieny.
I test drove one yesterday - was helping my mum. It's got very good visibility and so easy to drive with a light steering. It's very spacious compared to the CX5 but the Mazda G35 GT SP would murder it in terms of performance. The Mazda has a very different steering weight more of a drivers car. Both are quiet the Honda a little smoother but I thought the Mazda had less tyre noise. The Hyundai Tuscon diesel N Line is very good all round but I thought the interior plastics looked a little cheapo. I think we'll go the Honda because of the 5 low $199 services.
I have only 2 Honda dealers within 30 minutes drive, but 3 GWM. Your review just reinforces how Honda here in Australia with no diesel! will be less and less of a choice.
do you really want the headache of Euro 6 diesel? No thanks. Petrol/Hybird is better for metro and free way, while I do agree that diesel is great for highway that is about it, turbo petrol engines these days offer nice long and flat torque curves, 250Nm from 1,600rpm to 4,000rpm is great, that is more than enough to pull top gear all day long at highway speeds and still be under 2,000rpm which means economy is nearly as good as turbo diesel again without the issues of DFP, SCR and EGR getting in the way. As for GWM, great value options but the issue is durability, warranty and resale, none of which are strong points for any China motor vehicle.

@@kenphillips7594 - not at state or territory level, this court case now has placed the excise or levy or in other words TAX directly in the Commonwealth hands. At best all the states and territory cant do is up the stamp duty costs for example in NSW is 3.3% (INC GST) that could be lifted to possibly 5.5% (inc GST) via a regulation change (not legislation which can be challenged in courts) which can then be repealed / restarted at the start of a new government period (depending if the people change the government). Will be interesting to see what the Commonwealth Govt now, will they remove the fuel excise and do a flat rate for all vehicles? Either wat its gonna piss off a lot of people on both sides.
If getting a 5 seater, cannot beat the Haval H6 Hybrid. $46k driveaway for top spec and on my 1.5hr test drive it used 5.5L/100km on bog standard 91 unleaded fuel. 180KW makes it grunty too. Plus 7 year warranty makes it a no brainer.

@@ayfj4572 Stat's from Asia and South Africa is showing Taxi / Rideshare drivers using GWM Hybrids clocking 200,000km in just 2 years and being very robust, no issues, so reliability on GWM Hybrid models is far better than other Chinese manufacturers. Plus 7 years warranty in Australia, pretty solid buy.
depends, that said reports from E:Power owners are suggesting energy consumption is around the 5.5L per 100km range if you drive in B mode (which is the middle level regen mode) which means a lot of metro/urban driving and some freeway / motorway driving. I have driven the X-Trail E:Power and using B mode is at best a major compromise since as soon as you lift off the accelerator the vehicle is slowing down and as such you have to press on to keep up with flow of traffic (at legal speeds that is) is other words you cant let the vehicle settle down and coast as it needs constant acceleration, the same applies to using E:Pedel mode in start stop traffic.
Test dove a hybrid x travel and it has gearbox issues and was told it's a common problem so I brought the cr-v hybrid just because it was 4k more than the top end as driven in the video
HA is just terrible and this is just the latest example. I'd hoped that the Collins influence would have been over by now but no. Four seat HRV, overpriced ZRV and now this horrible CRV minus AWD. When combined with the earlier posts about oil dilution, why would anyone touch a Honda?
7 months later from your comment, and the pricing is pretty bang-on IMO...especially when you factor in the quality and deals on offer. For $60k driveway, the hybrid easily the pick of the range.
The only dilution problem was only an issue for those who drive short distances in cold climates (mainly Northern USA, Canada and Mainland China). No problems were recorded for South East Asia, Hong Kong and Macau. Anyways, it was already fixed after the mid-life update for the 5th gen CRV. So imho, 6th gen CRV shouldn't have this issue anymore for units with the L15 VTEC engine. Besides, Australia is not that much of a cold-weather territory so it shouldn't be a problem for 6th gen CRV :)
The only torque convertersl autos in this segment are from Mazda (CX-5) and Ford (Escape), everything else is either CVT or DCT. If your debating which is worse I can tell you now that if you go for DCT you need an engine that has low down torque otherwise forgot about it where with CVT the ending need top end power. I'd rather CVT over DCT any day ending with Y.
You wouldn't need that big coat in mid October if you were north of the border - just saying ;-) , CRV are a spacious in 2 row format that's for sure. It does look bland inside though - remember when Honda's were sporty looking sedans and coupes . . .
The CR-V will work a bit dearer than say an X-Trail E:Power where a $2-2.5K discount off RRP is now fairly easily negotiated on a Ti. Trade in values at car dealers selling on behalf of Honda Australia tend to be really poor as well - maybe it’s how they make a decent $ return on a fixed fee Honda sale. Damn that Honda fixed price BS.

If wanting a hybrid is a priority the Honda is far too expensive Toyota RAV4 GX hybrid entry level is under $46,000 just my take ages to get one.

Hi Matt, Do you recommend petrol CRV among its competitors? Basically CX-5, Tucson, Outlander, X-trail and RAV4 petrol ? Im asking in terms of engine, drive ability, fuel efficieny.
Yep. I’d have it over all of those as a petrol.
I test drove one yesterday - was helping my mum. It's got very good visibility and so easy to drive with a light steering. It's very spacious compared to the CX5 but the Mazda G35 GT SP would murder it in terms of performance. The Mazda has a very different steering weight more of a drivers car. Both are quiet the Honda a little smoother but I thought the Mazda had less tyre noise. The Hyundai Tuscon diesel N Line is very good all round but I thought the interior plastics looked a little cheapo. I think we'll go the Honda because of the 5 low $199 services.
I just put a deposit on one, but to be fair I only compared this to the ZRV and CX 5
I have only 2 Honda dealers within 30 minutes drive, but 3 GWM. Your review just reinforces how Honda here in Australia with no diesel! will be less and less of a choice.
do you really want the headache of Euro 6 diesel? No thanks. Petrol/Hybird is better for metro and free way, while I do agree that diesel is great for highway that is about it, turbo petrol engines these days offer nice long and flat torque curves, 250Nm from 1,600rpm to 4,000rpm is great, that is more than enough to pull top gear all day long at highway speeds and still be under 2,000rpm which means economy is nearly as good as turbo diesel again without the issues of DFP, SCR and EGR getting in the way.
As for GWM, great value options but the issue is durability, warranty and resale, none of which are strong points for any China motor vehicle.
Mate petrol or diesel, the ICE options are starting to disappear!
@@therightcar - depends Matt, ICE will still be around for the foreseeable future, especially ow with the High Court ruling today going to be interesting to see how the state and territories make up the short fall.

@@kenphillips7594 - not at state or territory level, this court case now has placed the excise or levy or in other words TAX directly in the Commonwealth hands. At best all the states and territory cant do is up the stamp duty costs for example in NSW is 3.3% (INC GST) that could be lifted to possibly 5.5% (inc GST) via a regulation change (not legislation which can be challenged in courts) which can then be repealed / restarted at the start of a new government period (depending if the people change the government).
Will be interesting to see what the Commonwealth Govt now, will they remove the fuel excise and do a flat rate for all vehicles? Either wat its gonna piss off a lot of people on both sides.
If getting a 5 seater, cannot beat the Haval H6 Hybrid. $46k driveaway for top spec and on my 1.5hr test drive it used 5.5L/100km on bog standard 91 unleaded fuel. 180KW makes it grunty too. Plus 7 year warranty makes it a no brainer.

@@351tgvas a general rule on resale value if a new car is not popular new won't be popular 2nd hand MG and Havel have proven to be very popular new in fact they outsell Honda yen fold so 2nd hand safe to say they will be popular
@@robertceroli3512 - yes very popular NOT, mate drive around the MG dealership and see just how many MG are in the used car lots, 99%. People buy them, drive them, figure out they are shit and off load them all within 18 months.
same applies to GWM vehicles, a person I know bought a H6, was complete rubbish did the best offer on car sales lost $15,000, the lesson? stay the F away from china vehicles unless you really don't care about resale because you are buying and keeping it for more than 5 years.
Good luck with long term reliability of that thing. Toyota, Mazda and Honda only thanks.
@@ayfj4572 Stat's from Asia and South Africa is showing Taxi / Rideshare drivers using GWM Hybrids clocking 200,000km in just 2 years and being very robust, no issues, so reliability on GWM Hybrid models is far better than other Chinese manufacturers. Plus 7 years warranty in Australia, pretty solid buy.
X trail epower is the better choice
depends, that said reports from E:Power owners are suggesting energy consumption is around the 5.5L per 100km range if you drive in B mode (which is the middle level regen mode) which means a lot of metro/urban driving and some freeway / motorway driving.
I have driven the X-Trail E:Power and using B mode is at best a major compromise since as soon as you lift off the accelerator the vehicle is slowing down and as such you have to press on to keep up with flow of traffic (at legal speeds that is) is other words you cant let the vehicle settle down and coast as it needs constant acceleration, the same applies to using E:Pedel mode in start stop traffic.
Test dove a hybrid x travel and it has gearbox issues and was told it's a common problem so I brought the cr-v hybrid just because it was 4k more than the top end as driven in the video
Alot of the new cars would use waterbase paints due to enviromental & health requirements 0:07

HA is just terrible and this is just the latest example. I'd hoped that the Collins influence would have been over by now but no. Four seat HRV, overpriced ZRV and now this horrible CRV minus AWD. When combined with the earlier posts about oil dilution, why would anyone touch a Honda?

2wd RAV4 hybrid cruiser is $57k driveway and 18-24 month wait. CRV hybrid 3 month wait.

7 months later from your comment, and the pricing is pretty bang-on IMO...especially when you factor in the quality and deals on offer. For $60k driveway, the hybrid easily the pick of the range.

Good point mate, the elephant in the room.
The only dilution problem was only an issue for those who drive short distances in cold climates (mainly Northern USA, Canada and Mainland China).
No problems were recorded for South East Asia, Hong Kong and Macau.
Anyways, it was already fixed after the mid-life update for the 5th gen CRV.
So imho, 6th gen CRV shouldn't have this issue anymore for units with the L15 VTEC engine.
Besides, Australia is not that much of a cold-weather territory so it shouldn't be a problem for 6th gen CRV :)

The only torque convertersl autos in this segment are from Mazda (CX-5) and Ford (Escape), everything else is either CVT or DCT.
If your debating which is worse I can tell you now that if you go for DCT you need an engine that has low down torque otherwise forgot about it where with CVT the ending need top end power.
I'd rather CVT over DCT any day ending with Y.
Dct great for performance, not so user friendly in that stop start city tho

No front, side cameras for a 360 view is penny pinching in a $60K car. Ditto for no height adjustment for the passenger seat.
You wouldn't need that big coat in mid October if you were north of the border - just saying ;-) , CRV are a spacious in 2 row format that's for sure. It does look bland inside though - remember when Honda's were sporty looking sedans and coupes . . .

The CR-V will work a bit dearer than say an X-Trail E:Power where a $2-2.5K discount off RRP is now fairly easily negotiated on a Ti. Trade in values at car dealers selling on behalf of Honda Australia tend to be really poor as well - maybe it’s how they make a decent $ return on a fixed fee Honda sale. Damn that Honda fixed price BS.
Trading in a car is literally a choice, not a necessity...any dealer is going to shaft you on a trade-in price. Nothing wrong at all with the agency model IMO, about time more manufacturers move with the times and do the same.
