In the original macross tv series macross city was put in the main body 'torso' not the leg. That was done in the movie version of macross. Personally i think macross city is in the torso and both legs. Would make more sense to me.
The only real reason for putting the city (or the section we saw) in the leg at all was to have the transition scene of Valkyrie's launching from the ARMD panning toward the windows and moving into the city. The fact it has ARMDs instead of Prometheus and Daedalus (as well as the grey and dark grey paint, rather than white and blue) also gives away that it is not the TV series version. The glow in the dark bits really leaning into the opening title shot, when the Macross is revealed in sunlight from darkness
I use to think it was in the main gun/towers sections, because if you watch the transformation on the TV show barriers rise up splitting the city in half (like the Towers split to for the shoulder cannons) -- in the DYRL movie (as this toy is from that movie) the big window Minmei is sitting in front off right before she sings her epic song at the end is located in the leg section (however she was not in the city at the time) so the creators of this toy took liberties in the location. --- it should be noted in the Macross II RPG they made deck plans of the Macross (based on the movie look) and it's located in the main chest (living area), shoulders (part of the "highway" and legs (main city on multiple levels) remember the "city" was an ISLAND and was f-ing big (the ship fit on the island) and had 10,000 - 20,000 people living on it
for displaying to get the best effect with the glow in the dark paints use a small UV led pointed at it, maybe 2 for full coverage. itll make them shine like theyre powered
Hey, brah. Just wanted to thank for your work on this vid, as its really helpful since I'm assembling a kit from Yamato, got it on ebay for a kidney... Now I'm about to start painting some details with glow in the dark paint, and recording the toy from all angles is very useful to me. Its just a shame you don't get any nippers and put those detailed screw covers, they are really nice, but hey, I understand laziness...
So on this, are all the glow-in-the-dark paint dots on raised or lowered sections of plastic that mirror image the non-premium? Or did they just randomly place the dots of color to give the appearance of various lights and windows that do not exist at all on the original? What I’m getting at, if I were to get my own glow-in-the-dark paint would it be easy for me to match it up to the premium?
Another great review. But one quibble I have, or suggestion is to translate about how much in USD these things would cost. I know the values change with time but it’s still helpful. Yeeeees I could use google, but I was just thinking about how thorough your videos are. . . it would yet another detail appreciated. Thanks again.
First, thanks for taking the time to provide feedback. Once upon a time, I included this info on the text reviews but it dated the reviews and became misleading. Watching a month-old review that had a USD price would still require a currency conversion because the swings can be dramatic. The manufacturers of the toys I review often don't get American licenses, so it's a poor reflection of their pricing structure. In the last 30 days only about 35% of my audience was in the US which would leave a good chunk of viewers still in the dark for their conversion. So while I can see where it is helpful as a sort of 'gut-check' number, the Yen price more concrete. For toys licensed by Harmony Gold, I do quote the USD MSRP.
Question, the glow-in-the-dark details, do they seem to be thicker than regular paint? I feel like on the antenna and other areas maybe it looks like a little glob hanging on top of them. And if someone did want to take a regular and match the premium, are all of the glow in the dark areas molded parts of plastic that they added paint details to? Or just randomly added?
If you get the chance to, would you ever drop a review for a TV version of the SDF-1? I personally am more partial to it bc I like the look of the Prometheus and Daedalus arms on it rather than the flat ARMDs.
Sadly, not many companies since Takatoku have bothered making a TV version of the SDF-1. The only modern one is this guy: ua-cam.com/video/KlfwFp0BmiA/v-deo.html
What's up with the arms? They look like the ARMOUR space carriers that were destroyed/crippled during the Zentrati attack on Earth? Been awhile since I watched either series but were the Aircraft carriers only in Robotech? 🤷🏻♂️ It looks badass but if I could get one with the Dias versions I think if get those on there and use the ARMOUR versions as support ships in a display set up
That is the way the Macross appeared in the movie "Macross: Do You Remember Love" which had not received an official US release (thanks to the death grip Harmony Gold had on US distribution, and Japan utterly refusing any "Robotech" adaptation of the film) The carriers (Daedalus and Prometheus) were only in the TV series version. Every subsequent release, from the film-onward (namely Macross II and Macross Plus) used this version with the ARMDs as arms. This therefore means the "Daedalus Attack" canonically never happened in this particular continuity.
I like the notion but I think at 1/3000 scale it'd be too problematic to do. The valks would be like 3 millimeters long and it's hard to imagine them looking very good at that size. If they made them over-sized so they could look better then people would complain they were out of scale.
They don't really make it clear in the show or the movie. You just see a lot of components shifting. I will say that DYRL hints at it much better since the city rotates 90 degrees after transformation. That still doesn't rule out the chances that it was in the SDF-1's "chest" though.
You could say that I guess. But Milia's Queadlunn was clearly heading somewhere between the chest's side & the leg in the movie IIRC. I guess fans that couldn't get enough of Macross lore just found out where it is once the model was out, and assumed it was common knowledge.
since the video is apparently unavailable - the answer is, this is the way the Macross appeared in the movie "Macross: Do You Remember Love" and every subsequent release (namely Macross II and Macross Plus)
Holy Shit my wife is going to kill me. I just dropped 480.00 for this after seeing this review. Instant love. Oh well . You know how the old saying goes. Better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission lol

Are they going to make a SDF-1 that actually resembles the ship from the TV show? First, the SDF-1 is blue & white not gray & the main gun is blue with white tips. Second the right arm is a personal carrier called the Daedalus & the left are is an aircraft carrier called the Prometheus. They are both blue with red on the bottom. This looks like a cheap knock off because they didn't get the license to make toys based on the actual Macross Saga TV show. Not only did I watch the show when it first aired in the U.S. , I built several of the officially licensed model kits including the SDF-1. I also have the show on DVD so I have seen it recently. During this time, they find a sunken city (revealed after the attack that devastated the planet had evaporated much of the ocean) where evidence of the Protoculture (the ancient culture that spawned Humans and Zentraedi/Meltrandi, NOT a power source) was discovered, and becomes the precursor to peace talks between them. That is,... until Zentran and Meltran in-fighting erupts again. Sadly the movie has never seen an official US release, much less a dub (only an Australian dub of some horrifically poor quality), but perhaps now that Harmony Gold no longer has a death grip on legal exclusivity, we can finally get that release.

I'd argue that the toy looks even better in person than the video suggests. Utterly beautiful, but a shame they didn't paint Macross city.
In the original macross tv series macross city was put in the main body 'torso' not the leg.
That was done in the movie version of macross.
Personally i think macross city is in the torso and both legs. Would make more sense to me.

I will wait 4 a re-release since this is the better version !
Tbh the SDF-1 wasn’t depicted as very articulated anyway, but yeah I can see the drawbacks of not being to replicate the anime scenes with the toy.
I will definite get it if it’s hands followed the yesteryear tv model.
Now I really have to re-evaluate the courage of Zentradi's pilots that broke into Minmay's concert hall.

BTW, if I made a sister ship/robot, would it be called the SDF-2?
I believe there already was an SDF-2, named Megaroad-01, as seen in Macross Flashback 2012
wouldve been cooler had it included little scale valkyries and destroids to position on it
I like the notion but I think at 1/3000 scale it'd be too problematic to do. The valks would be like 3 millimeters long and it's hard to imagine them looking very good at that size. If they made them over-sized so they could look better then people would complain they were out of scale.
