THE NBB IS THE EQUAL OF ANY BLUEGRASS BAND EVER . TWO GREAT LEAD SINGERS WHO ARE ALSO GREAT TENOR HARMONY SINGERS . ALL ARE FABULOUS INSTRUMENTLISTS . WONDERFUL GOOSEBUMP RAISING 2, 3 AND 4 PART SINGING . NO WEAKNESSES ANYPLACE
Pat Entright and Alan O’Bryant are two of the greatest singers in all of American music of the latter half of the 20th century and are virtually unknown outside of bluegrass. Crazy.
@BluegrassLibrary All great musicians, and just all around great guys. Pat's vocal is spot on, Stuart's fiddling is top notch, and Alan's banjo playing and singing is phenomenal, I got the oppurtunity to meet him, and he is the nicest person you'd ever wanna meet. He was nice enough even to teach me a banjo lesson, and I even got to play the banjo he's playing in this vid! He is so knowledgeable, and his sense of humor is impeccable as well. ~Craig
We got the opportunity to meet Stuart as well, and he's also the nicest person you'd ever want to meet...:) He repaired a fiddle for my sister and surprised us with his kindness at every turn. These guys really love the music, and they are willing to do a lot to keep it alive. Thank God for all their awesome music.
Put no stone at my head, no flowers on my tomb No gold plated sign in a marble pillared room The one thing I want when they lay me in the ground When I die tear my stillhouse down Oh tear my stillhouse down, let it go to rust Don't leave no trace of the hiding place Where I made that evil stuff For all my time and money no profit did I see That old copper kettle was the death of me When I was a child way back in the hills I laughed at the men who tended those stills But that old mountain shine, it caught me somehow When I die tear my stillhouse down Oh tear my stillhouse down, let it go to rust Don't leave no trace of the hiding place Where I made that evil stuff For all my time and money no profit did I see That old copper kettle was the death of me Oh tell all your children that Hell ain't no dream 'Cause Satan he lives in my whisky machine And in my time of dying I know where I'm bound When I die tear my stillhouse down Oh tear my stillhouse down, let it go to rust Don't leave no trace of the hiding place Where I made that evil stuff For all my time and money no profit did I see That old copper kettle was the death of me
Good bluegrass, but they strip Gillian's song of pretty much all of its haunting beauty. When Gillian does it, you can see the mist rising from the hollows, you can feel the heat from the copper kettle, you can smell the sour mash bubbling away. This version sounds like any bread and butter bluegrass song.
They are superb artists and they are entitled to their interpretation in their own style. I love Gillian's original (with the snare drum). However, there would be no point in duplicating her version. I disagree with your assessment, but that is what makes horse races. Cheers. ;)
Pat Enright has always been one of my favorite singers in bluegrass music

When Alan sings across the head of that banjo, I get goosebumps.
We have been playing this for years and never knew who wrote it!
Thanks for the post!

Strong band, no weakness at any position.
a great bluegrass cover of gw's song, nice work!
ohh just found this soo good.
Best version of this song
Put no stone at my head, no flowers on my tomb
No gold plated sign in a marble pillared room
The one thing I want when they lay me in the ground
When I die tear my stillhouse down
Oh tear my stillhouse down, let it go to rust
Don't leave no trace of the hiding place
Where I made that evil stuff
For all my time and money no profit did I see
That old copper kettle was the death of me
When I was a child way back in the hills
I laughed at the men who tended those stills
But that old mountain shine, it caught me somehow
When I die tear my stillhouse down
Oh tear my stillhouse down, let it go to rust
Don't leave no trace of the hiding place
Where I made that evil stuff
For all my time and money no profit did I see
That old copper kettle was the death of me
Oh tell all your children that Hell ain't no dream
'Cause Satan he lives in my whisky machine
And in my time of dying I know where I'm bound
When I die tear my stillhouse down
Oh tear my stillhouse down, let it go to rust
Don't leave no trace of the hiding place
Where I made that evil stuff
For all my time and money no profit did I see
That old copper kettle was the death of me
ROLAND WHITE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So Gillian Welch is the original autor? Unbelievable. It sounds so... traditional, you know :)
Yeah, she lives and breathes the old time stuff. Orphan Girl sounds like a hymn from the 1800's.
OKAY
