    One thing I truly appreciate about your videos is your... non-insistence on keeping everything perfect and pristine. I feel we live in a world where we buy things for their aesthetic purpose and that conflicts with its real world use. People are always so careful to keep their make up looking pristine, like it's never even used, on UA-cam, while you swatch things so deliciously and there is a sort of grungy and used look to your things which makes me feel good about my used, broken, messy and worn makeup palettes, cosmetics and things in general. I believe this need to keep things pristine is just as toxic and leads to buying excess as anything else. So yes to using and finding joy in messing things up.

      Well, that hurts my heart! Haha. I understand how OCD behaviours can be annoying to some people (I'd say as much as a _laissez faire_ approach is to a cleaner), but I don't see how can that be directly related to overspending. Wanting to keep things clean and wanting to keep them unused are two different attitudes. And, just as a reminder, some people find joy in messing things up, some others find joy in exactly the opposite picture ;)

    • @moonireads
      @moonireads 5 років тому +16

      @@Dan_Chiron there's a big difference between the societal norms and UA-cam culture and TOC behavior. I was referring to the former.

      Interesting because the channels I watch, I notice the complete opposite! They all have dirty, messy makeup. I personally like to keep everything clean and I like to be gentle with my makeup. I see people with their filthy ABH felt palettes and it boggles my mind 🤣 That isn’t a judgement, however, just an observation. I do quite enjoy how Hannah arranges her big single palette in an organic way!

    Hannah, I want to thank you for always reminding us that nothing is worth mortgaging our futures in the pursuit of acquiring realms and realms of varied beauty. As someone who's planning on embarking on my own no-buy year next year and has essentially been on a perpetual low-buy for the past two years, it's always important to remind myself the odds at which my fantasy self and my reality can often contort my own visions of where and how I am. As someone who suffers from a variety of mental illnesses--such as bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, etc--it can be hard to work on impulse control, as the mania essentially fries my judgment skills, which for a long time, I've worked on mitigating. By watching you all throughout your no-buy year last year and slowly working on dialectal behavioral therapy and reforming the way my brain works--and my learned coping skills of dealing with my trauma through overspending on beauty once I finally escaped self-harm--so that my reality can finally be what I want it to be, even if a little rough around the edges of my idealized version.
    I did think these shadows merited my throwing my coins towards them, because they're inspiring, stunning, and worth being an offering to the gods/goddesses for divinity. However, budgeting for a few of them helped the sting of "needing" the whole collection whence in a frenzied mental state.

    Love your comments about small businesses and what the costs of high quality products that aren’t mass manufactured truly are.

    • @eikawithac
      @eikawithac 5 років тому +11

      Sarah Hubler Totally agree! I have a tendency to get up on my soapbox about how we are all so accustomed to paying for products made of cheap materials by human beings who are being terribly exploited, working under conditions we would never accept for ourselves. Once a brand pays for quality materials, and then pays employees (or themselves, in cases like Hannah’s) a fair living wage to manufacture in safe and dignified conditions, the cost of the product is going to be miles higher than what we’re used to.

      human or machine? I made a decision a few months ago to stop purchasing lots of more affordable eyeshadows, and only buy from smaller quality indie brands with good reputations.. I saved up a bit to order a few of the clionadh stained glass shadows. I placed my order in July, and they should be shipping out soon! I’m more excited than I’ve been in a super long time!! I’ve found that I get so much more joy when it’s something special to my collection! For those of you who want to try out some beautiful less expensive multichromes.., Devinah, and JD glow have wonderful formulas for a much more affordable price! Good gawd, and unexpected are magnificent!

    These shadows are truly some of the most beautiful makeup I've ever seen, but I won't be buying any of them. Given my work environment and my lifestyle outside of work, I doubt I'd ever find a situation where I would wear these. I have to say, the searches up your arm at 25:00 created a really beautiful look and color story. All similar tones, but the less reflective textures of the other shadows I think would be beautiful on the eyes with the Clionadh shadows, seems like they would help ground them a bit and create a nice contrast of textures to make an almost more interesting look. Would make a lovely little palette together 😊

    They're absolutely precious and I did see a few I liked the look of! That said, I have several reasons not to purchase. Like, for example, I don't use a couple duochromes that I have much at all, I'm quite into mattes and regular shimmers. I'm feeling satisfied with what I have and enjoy at the moment! Also, getting these to Europe would be an undertaking I'm not prepared for, price-wise, so when I start wanting more, I'm looking at local: Nabla (two years on a wishlist!) and Lethal.

Something to note on price is that CAD to USD is actually cheaper for US residents so the price isn't quite as high, I was going to go purchase and treat myself to them regardless but the conversion savings were a nice little surprise.

    There are so many palettes, including the ND Gold palette, that I want for a few special shades (e.g. Lime Chrome & Brass) but don’t necessarily want/need all the accessory shades. The higher price tag of these shadows is worth it to me for the quality and the satisfaction of having that one and only shade that I’ve been wanting for so long. And, in the end, I’d be spending less for a few shadows that I’d absolutely love versus spending slightly more money on other shadows that are just okay for me. I’m definitely gonna wait for Black Friday to see if I can pick these up on sale. Thank goodness they’re not limited edition.

    I think these are gorgeous, but they are past what is reasonable for my budget right now. I purchased a couple of Looxi (also independent) aurora shadows to satisfy my desire for shifting shadow. They're not as intense from what I can tell, but for me that actually means I will probably wear them more. So for me that combined with their $4 price made them much better fit for my collection and budget. However, I will still continue to admire the stained glass shadows from afar

    These are beautiful. I might at some point buy a few of these. I'm glad to hear these are a permanent part of the line. You flashing images of some of your tango clothes... the skirt in the 1st image, be still my heart!
    I've been playing in the realm of super shiny, so for those looking for high impact at a much lower cost, Colourpop's loose pigments layered over a super shock shadow are kind of mind blowing. The crab over frog... oh my gah... my mind was blown over how well this works. The goat also combines beautifully with frog and prickly pear. I'm excited to play more with this duo of products that I discovered last night.
    Someone mentioned in another comment how excellent Looxi is and I have to say I agree. Of all of my shadows, a few of my singles from Looxi are my "crown jewels." I was tempted at one point to toss almost everything else and just keep them. I did declutter a lot, and ordered more singles from Looxi.

    I looove duo chrome sparkly eyeshadows. I think is my favorite thing ever, that and rich jewel tones. I just bought some jd glow shadows :3 I'm so excited, I'm planning to buy 4 or 5 at a time. Good gawd was sold out! Can't wait to play with them

    Thanks for the indepth review Hannah! I've been eyeing up these shadows but they're not in my budget at the moment - though I'm thinking if I still want them after Christmas I might save up and buy a few then. I'm a bit worried about delivery though (I'm in the UK). These look really beautiful and it was especially nice to see an example of a look you can make with them!

    I love this detailed comparison and analysis of these gorgeous shadows. My only concern with Clionadh's choice not to edit down the iterations is a question of keeping up with demand, as they clearly already are. Nothing more damning than success you're not ready for... 😖😩 I hope they can ride out this wave and increase their efficiency soon 💚

    I agree what you said towards about $. These are lovely. I purchase from a lot of indie shops that I usually discover through Etsy. Vanessa’s Vanity has amazing highlighters and shadows. Someone recently recommended a shop from Russia called Sigilinspired. Let me tell you, their shadows looks heavenly. I can’t wait to try some.
    Thanks a bunch, chickadee🍃🌸

    I can’t believe you haven’t hit pan on those two JDGlow shades the number of times you’ve swatched them! I might have to get Unexpected. It was easier to judge them against shadows that they can be compared too. Very interesting! I have Mr. Sandman and it looked so sad compared, 😂.

    I saw someone complain about the quality of the iridescent shadows. I think they were using a brush so they just crumble. I can't stand when people don't want to get dirty and use their hands lol or when they say the quality is bad because you can't use a brush. Pat McGrath literally tells you to use your fingers for some of her shadows yet they're extremely expensive and considered high quality. It's art. Get dirty and creative.

      Danielle Thilette these products often apply best with a sponge. But people insist on believing that sponge eyeshadow applicators are ‘cheap ‘

      There's nothing wrong with wanting to keep your hands clean lol. For super glittery shades I just use sponge tip applicators and it looks great with no mess.

      @@clarinetpride55 there's nothing wrong with wanting to be "clean" I still find it annoying that the quality of shadows is always questioned for those reasons.
