- A Backyard Ultra Documentary about the Danish Backyard Ultra.
Its Easy Until Its Not : A Backyard Story / With English Subtitles
The film that won BEST NORDIC FILM OF THE YEAR at the Nordic Aventure Film Festival in 2019.
A film about what we humans are capable of.
In "It's Easy Until It's Not - A Backyard Story" you can follow Maria Bonne, Lue Tornbo Basstrup, Leon Skriver Hansen, who are all looking to find their limit when they participate in the Danish version of Bigs Backyard Ultra which goes under the name The Great Dane Backyard Ultra. We follow their adventures into the unknown, and along the way we hear about what motivates and drives them, as well as about their preparations and strategy for the race. Backyard Ultra is a foot race where a new race of 6.7 km starts every hour, which the runners have one hour to complete. And so it goes on until there is only one runner left.

"If you ever doubt humanity, just show up at an ultra race." Love this!
"You can decide next round" is genius coaching. "You are tied for first right now." Also true and genius.
Laz is really dropping pearls in the first segment. I could listen to the guy for days. He really understands the psychology behind this stuff.
Backyard ultra is his greatest gift. It's really taken off.
The only marathon I will ever manage is binge watching marathon videos on youtube...I am exceptional at it.
The only real limits humans have are the ones that they place on themselves! If you truly wanted to run a marathon you would do it!
Suggest me some best marathons bro
Laz is such a legend for taking part in all of these documentaries
I could watch and listen to Lue's beautiful words of wisdom many times over. What she describes of life and humanity is wonderful, indeed she and other runners restore my faith in ourselves ❤
this movie has inspired me so much to run my first trail marathon soon. ive always ran only half marathons
My buddy does these. He is also crazy and he can send his brain to serious places where most of us would have quit long before. I love supporting him and I told him if he got accepted to barkley I would take him.
I hope he makes it to Barkley
Great documentary. It was a joy to watch. Thank you.
Thanks Trailbear Films for the care you took making this documentary and for the English subtitles! As a native English speaker, I am more than happy to read subtitles to enjoy content from other cultures
Thank you so much. Thanks for taking time out of your day to see my film
Really enjoyed this, it shows how close the community is and how slightly mad they are. Thanks for the subtitles.
You're welcome
Very good film. Three utterly different runners, each with their own story and struggles. I like this style of race because each lap gives a new picture of the runners. I do wish that basic text was provided for each round with the lap number and a time check when the runner sits. I know it's in the dialog, it would just help with my enjoyment (maybe others?).
16 days out from my 100 miler, this I needed. To show how low it can get, and that you can turn it around.
Good luck with your 100 miler.
How did that 100 go for you?
@@jessewestbrook9816 I did quite a few milers in 2021. If the comment of mine was exactly a year ago, then it was probably Karkloof 100 Miler. I got the buckle. Finished all 5 100 milers that I started in 2021. Its all in the mind.
@@misterb1915 that's awesome dude! Going for my first 50k soon
@@jessewestbrook9816 Awesome! You'll smash it no probs.
I’m trying to finish a small running streak of 90 days during a second quarantine shutdown as I add mileage in anticipation of a 40 mile race and after that a 24 hour 1 mile loop race...AND this movie is perfect motivation...I have shin splints, heel pain, and an angry calf but I keep going out day after day because I have to. There is no stopping now. I’m almost there and have to do it again. And again. Thanks for the inspiration, all of you. 🙏🙏
Barkely level in danish ground. Phantastic. Thanks for the Video and the inspirations that came with it. Mange tack from Germany.
Your welcome.
I thought that dude was the Barkley dude ha ha
Just as great as when I watched it the first time at the Nordic Adventure Film Festival! Beautifully told and wonderful people all around!!
Thanks for watching it again
why is Lazarus Lake outside the state of Tennessee? I didn't know that was possible...
I ran my first half marathon in Lyngby :-) and have since done Copenhagen marathon twice (great race). Amazing place to run, Growing up in Allerod and now living in the US, it was nice to see some danish runners.
I still need to be a member of the Lue Fanclub! Incredible film Trailbear.
I was waiting for him to light a cigarette.
it is not barkley marathon, despite the creator is still the lazarus lake him self.
@@Orisonmarden thank heavens for that, can you imagine if there was a host of race organisers like him.
Me fucking to
I was thinking how good Maria looked when she came in and then gave her friend the finger for saying the same thing!
Excellent work! As raw as it gets. Thank you.
Fantastic film and beautiful storytelling. Best running film so far. Well done. !
Great vid, it gave me the push to run this evening as I was going to skip it. It's dark outside, driving sleet and rain and only 1^C. I even added a little and ran 6 km as a nod to all involved in this👍👍
It ain't about not stopping, it's about always starting💪
T.
I'm glad it's helping you out running and motivating you
Such a cool event, absolutely one that's on my bucketlist
Another stunning video. Great to watch these during my training for my upcoming 50 mile ultra - Documented on my channel
Gary is such a legend
👍🏼 exciting!
Awesome! What a privilege to watch
Can’t beat a good Backyard 🏃🏻♂️
Really enjoyed this! What an experience
Wonderful Film!
Thank you
How many license plates did it cost for getting Lazarus Lake to Denmark?
Funnily enough, there was only one who came with a license plate.
Fortunately, Laz is a big fan of Danish bakeries, so it was easy enough to persuade him
beautiful film!!
Thank you very much
This is so awesome!
Exceptional!
Thanks
Fantastic documentary !
Awesome video!
Thank you
I need to be on the Lue cheer squad.
Great video and amazing cinematography!
Thank you so much
So awesome and so inspiring. Few weeks ago I just started my channel documenting a big goal of running The Badwater 135 in the upcoming years and I get lots of motivation to go for it when watching such a great documentaries. Thank you so much :-)
Thank you very much
You get after it buddy! Be sure to keep us posted !!
@@thomasdatro6846 Thanks man🙂 I for sure will 😀
Let’s goooooo
Lone runner from meghalaya we dont have training camp or groups its difficult to improve
Absolutely need to extend an invitation to goggins. I have watched a ton of backyard docs and never heard Laz say that he expected people to run until their bodies give out. That is staying hard to the letter!
Unfortunately, I do not think goggins can handle the Danish Backyard. It's way too hard for him. Do you think he will come if I write it to him. Hihi
@@trailbearfilms 🤣🤣 this is clearly a joke right? Can’t handle, im crying at this haha
It's a joke😉
Lue didnt quit she ran out of time. BIG Diference
Appears 6months later than the sequel, shame, I then knew who won, made watching this a bit of a drag.
That's all right. It was my first film and was released in early 2020 without English subtitles. But at the request of Backyard Fans, it is now coming out with subtitles
@@trailbearfilms Ah, I must've missed it then, I can only speak english so appreciate the subtitles. Great films.
It has no subtitles for me. I just watched pictures 😥
Great movie! Music in the background is really cool. Is there any link to that background music?

Mest snøfler faktisk! :D
I so know the feeling of "whose the idiot who signed me up for this"
I’m so confused. Why does it start out at The Barkley and then all of a sudden they’re racing some other race? They literally use Laz’s face in the thumbnail, weird.
It's all from Denmark and Laz was invited to Denmark's first Backyard Ultra race. After all, Backyard Ultra is also a race that Laz is behind
Ah I see, I watched about 25 minutes in and didn’t really feel that was clear. Good to know.
Laz gives him a pass to the Barkley, right? What is it, a coin?
It's a pass to Bigs Backyard Ultra in the US. Not Barkley
Can't get subtitles on the TV 😞 but I can on my phone
imagine Goggins here
I was thinking the exact same thing, will Goggins ever give up, I think we all know the answer to that , this is a Goggins type of Race
He'd get lost without a boat.
Wouldn't even be fair
Goggins has never shown up to a backyard ultra. For a good reason. He wouldn’t win.
And yet he hasn’t chosen to even try.
That's pretty fucking hilly. 3600m elevation over 24 laps is 150m elevation per lap. No wonder the winning distance seems so human!
Did Laz quit smoking?
The people who thumbs downed are the ones that dropped out.
That was the ones who lost to them in the team competition ha ha
If I ever go there I will bring laz 20 packs of camel cigarettes
What were those pills ?
Over long distances women are provably better.
I get that it’s a race But because it has no finish line, why does it magically end as soon as second place decides to give up? Why doesn’t the race end when first place decides to give up. Like what? If first place went 43 laps before it was over because second place went 42 laps. Well, what if for whatever reason second place had decided to bow out after 40 laps. Then the race would’ve ended in 41 laps. If the first place can do more why not try I mean, isn’t this literally just about pushing yourself to your limits and not really about winning it’s more of pushing yourself as hard as you can go?
Im seeing alot of expensive activewear but Im not seeing much hustle.
Great film, but Lue is really annoying...
She just needs to find the pain cave and zone out and shell be fine
That dude who came to backyard without any experience of ultra is just disrespectful. What a waste of a slot.
I disagree. You have to start somewhere. When I started running, I went from 30k to running for 24 hours.
As Laz says, everyone should have the opportunity to find greatness in themselves
@@trailbearfilms and I disagree 🤷🏻♂️
@@Thekidisalright And you are allowed to. Fortunately, Backyard is a race where the average runner can compete against the elite and have a chance to win.
Where does that logic stop? No one would ever run thier first 5k, 10k, 50k or anything. Doing is the only way you get experience. The guy set a personal record and now knows he can do it and more, that's what these races are about.
@@scottwall8419 your strawman argument is like saying a person should be given a post of sales director without first being a sales representative, now you see how dumb it sounds now?
Sorry found this a little irritating. More running and less crying please !
hahaha you have to be joking
Hahahahaha
Haha yes she was extremely emotional. Ultra-running can teach us a thing or two about the differences between men and women I guess.
