I recently picked up an Ice Orbit River and it's awesome. A River with all the same glide as a regular Lucid, but flies straight when thrown flat brand new, is surprisingly torque resistant, and has a long pushing fade. I stopped bagging Rivers because they would get too touchy for my liking over too little time. The Orbit will beat in and develop turn much slower, which is exactly the situation you spoke of in the video.
I feel like this is very different than gyro. And it was around before MVP blew up! So I don't think it was to copy or compete with that look... I think it was just a further iteration on swirly or cool looking plastics.
Definitely agree on the Orbit VIP Ice Bear. For one, they're really pretty, especially in that blue. I love the First Run VIP Ice Bears because they were flatter and beefier than the stock runs are, and the new Orbit ones fly pretty much the same as the First Runs do. Right now, I have three Bears in my bag, and between the Bear and the Crave, I don't really need much else.
Yeah with a Crave you might need something a touch more overstable before something like a Firebird, but a straighter Felon might do the trick as well! At least here in the midwest where we have winds! But the Bear feels GREAT!
The new Innova 2-color Halo discs look amazing. If you have a local dealer in your area, go check it out. They also seem to have fixed their process; whereas the first 2 years of Halo runs of everything were super pop-top, a lot of the newer runs are true to the mold.
I think the look they've achieved with the white rim orbit ice stuff is just so clean. I really like how the plastic performs on all metrics too! They also seem to be flying pretty true to the mold (like the bear still has the turn it was designed to have). Most of them seem to have really smooth domes that look as they should, not caved in or extra tall, just a smooth extension from the curvature of the rim.
I think the stability comes from the different thermal propeties of the different color plastics. Leading to the parting line raising when they cool. But i had a halo Hawkeye that was very flippy put of box.
Grabbed a Lucid Ice Escape after falling in love with a Supreme one the last few months - it's exactly what I wanted out of it, pretty similar but slightly more torque resistant so I can get after it without worry of it flipping hard. Trilogy is killing it lately imo.
The Orbit discs have a grip similar to Lat 64s Royal Grand and it's fantastic finally getting a feel like that for other Trilogy molds. Closest thing we've gotten yet.
It's interesting to hear you say the Ice Orbit stuff is more overstable. I've thrown the EMac and Escape, and both are on the understable side of those molds.
Interesting! The Escape I got was more overstable than some of the other Escapes that I have tried! I haven't thrown enough Emac Truths to say about that one.
@@ApolloDiscGolf I guess they're a little inconsistent overall. I got an Ice Orbit River that's kind of FD stability since this comment. The EMac is really nice, though. Dead straight with just a touch of fade instead of usual 2 fade.
That is weird tho, since it is just a cosmetic effect, it really shouldnt change the flight BUT i do agree with you, every ”halo” disc i’ve tried are indeed more OS than their solid color counterpart
There are premium plastic Slammers Ricky has sold himself. But those were really limited as well. Also not related to the video but I feel like you could make some content out of Prodiscus discs 😅. If I may suggest molds then definately Ultrium Razeri (and Premium), Premium Troija (and Basic), Basic Origo (and Premium/Ultrium) and Midari. Those are my personal favourites that I think are insanely underrated/underhyped. 😬 Their newest additions have also gotten my attention for sure (Titan, Empire, Talisman) and Jokeri is their most known mold by far 😬
I haven't had a Halo plastic disc yet in 3 years of playing. Too expensive for me. Not windy here either. I have had cosmic Neutron which is my favorite most durable plastic. Big z is my second most durable. I hit my chain link fence and skip off my road all the time. I will buy a Halo KRAIT and kinda want a Halo mamba
That could very well be the case... But I don't think it's been marketed as that, has it? I think it's mainly for looks and the more stability comes just from it being a more overstable run
They aren't doing that. They're using different plastics that are mixed together in such a way you get that effect (in a similar they make the Burst effect).
MVP/Axiom (same company, just different brands) use different plastics to achieve the overmold, and the process by which they make the discs/their overmold technology are patented. As I understand it, the overmold (rim) is literally molded onto (over) the thing after the core has been molded. The halo/orbit/etc. plastics seem to be a variation on the burst plastics that seemed like suddenly they were everywhere a few years ago, wherein they run two different colors in such a way as to achieve a certain effect within a single-molded disc. My inclination (not being particularly verbose on plastics or injection molding) is that the first color ends up being the rim, with the center being run later. Again, a guess, but seems like the halo/orbit/etc's are almost the reverse of MVP's overmold tech. My inclination is that the nature of the halo molding process is such that it affects the cooling rate of the disc after it comes out of the mold, and the nature of that change is such that it results in a more overstable version of that mold. Of course, the rate at which a disc cools ultimately allows for some degree of shape change in the finished disc compared to the shape of the mold. This is why there are already inconsistencies from run to run and why MVP have stated they're air-conditioning their entire facility as part of their big expansion (since MVP prides themselves on the consistency of their discs).
What I don’t understand is Innova hardcore fans say there is no difference between Star and Halo Star yet why are all Halo discs more overstable than any other plastic counterpart and why does Innova say Halo is their most durable plastic?
Halo Star and Star are the same plastic, however in most cases, darker colors are used on the outside, as they tend to cool differently than the lighter plastics. They tend to be more stable, but not always. Some of the alchemy of the plastics is changed slightly due to the color of the plastic used. Champion technically is the most durable of the Innova plastics, however the Halo Star plastic should remain stable a little longer than regular Star (typically) since they just start out more stable. 🙂
The new orbit ice looks cool and all but the whole orbit/horizon/halo plastic feels a bit forced and over marketed now. On a side note david if you read this comment i am making a 9 disc bag souly out of recommendations off youtube content creators. Can you add a disc to my bag? Currently the bag looks like stalker, instinct, hex, zone, pig.
I have to disagree on the Halo plastic. I'm also a mold minimalist, but these halo discs are just too overstable. The halo Mako3 just has no glide in comparison with star or champion. While most of my discs are in opaque plastic (like star or lux), if I need a more overstable disc to layer in then I turn to the clear plastics (champion or neo) so that I can still keep my glide while achieving that fade.

Yeah I really wanted to try the Ice Orbit River! I was a little late on the draw there though! They are currently sold out for retailers 😭
@ApolloDiscGolf Check out an Opto X River. I talked to DD and they're close to the Explorer in flight.
Always appreciate the genuine feel of your videos, some of the easiest to watch DG content .. thanks David appreciate you a ton !
The best Halo Plastic is just Axiom
Meh
Nah Trilogy has the best Halo runs lately. Escape, Grace, Vandal, Bear. Much better than any MVP.
Everyone wants to be MVP now. Simon called it when he signed up. Now rims are insane colors by multiple manufacturers.

The other companies saw that Axiom discs looked awesome and tried to make their discs look similar. It's just good business. Throw Gyro!
I am also partly convinced that the halo etc. plastics were an attempt to do a non-infringing faux overmold.
Thank you for doing this video! I’ve been trying to find a video of how the orbit sapphire flies. Great content as always!
These are really cool! Can't wait to get some into my bag!

Shoutout to you for still rocking the original A-series bag dude! I don't see a lot of the "A13" bags around anymore and I still play with mine!
Yeah it's solid! I have busted a few of the Zippers though because I got so much dirt in them and I stuff the pockets a ton now with video stuff.
My favorite plastic is the meta plastics used for discmania’s zen 2, midnight prowl and iron samurai
That is also great plastic!
i like it on flippy drivers, stables things up and makes many US molds close to neutral

I'm a Jenn Allen Teebird guy but those flight numbers are so enticing
Yeah, like a Teebird with a touch of turn at the beginning of the flight!

That new gold cloudbreaker is also very tempting.
I always assumed they were using 2 different plastics in order to achieve the MVP over-mold effect with heavier rims?

I guess if the weights were different that uneven rim would cause weight fluctuations and probably have an effect too.
So what about the “halo” process makes them more stable?
What I don’t understand is Innova hardcore fans say there is no difference between Star and Halo Star yet why are all Halo discs more overstable than any other plastic counterpart and why does Innova say Halo is their most durable plastic?

They might technically be a different mix, but it generally just feels the same as Star. So that's why people just say it's star plastic.

the problem is every damn special release is in halo plastic now, its alright some of the time but every release? shits lame

Halo is a plastic type and orbit is a color scheme completely different

Huh? Halo is just Star. All of this is to sell more discs t those who own the regulars.
@@PMantledefinitely not just star plastic. Similar, but they do feel and fly differently (in my experience with star vs halo)
@@TimmyP_ It is absolutely Star plastic. All plastics can differ based upon the supply, but Halo is Star just as much as any other Star is Star.
You're partly wrong, they are both colour effects. And both are achieved in a way the PLH is higher than normally so the discs are OS as a result.
