  • 2024 Update: This is a legacy video! Meaning that much of the information in this video has been updated as it's been many years since I published this video. I didn't want to completely remove this resource, but for best results I would recommend learning from a more complete and up to date resource.

    How my family knows I clicker train horses....treats end up all over the inside of the washing machine.

    I'm looking into this for my two horses. I think my new pony will be fine, but my senior has scar tissue in his esophagus so I'm iffy about what to give him that will not make him choke. :(

    I use Cheerios or banana chips and my horse loves that! Sometimes carrots but he tends to like the sweetness which is also good for weight gain. I make my own treats and add lots of oil and good fats to plump him up ☺️ works super well!

      EquestrianMarie sounds like you’ve got it figured out! I need the opposite:. Weight loss 😂

      The Willing Equine hahah it can be tricky at times finding treats that fits your horses needs. Mines a piggy so he eats about anything 😂 but i defiantly gotta watch when he starts getting a lil bit plumpy.

    I use alfalfa and hay pellets. I think they are the healthiest option - as you said they are just like hay, nothing extra added :) Any my horse loves them and is very motivated to work for them which is great

    Our mainstay clicker treat is hay pellets too. They are easy to use and the horses love them, and they are quite affordable.🐴❤️️

    I'll look into the timothy pellets! That's a great idea! I usually pre scoop my horses grain, and then use that as their treats throughout the day, SUPER high value stuff for my rescue shetland LOL

    Okay, now this makes more sense... I will switch to a lower sugar treat without the molasses and see how the mini's respond to that. Thanks for the great info.

    Thanks for the review and video of these treats. I use peanuts in the shell for treats. I also have used Wellsolve pellets, but right now avoiding any hint of sugars. -- Want some varied treats for my horse because he cannot be out on grass EVER. Going to put in a Nose-it for something to keep him busy and happier.

    Are timothy pellets better than alfalfa for training? Or is the Timothy/alfalfa mix the best option? Trying to figure out which kind is best for my horse!

    Can I use herbs, flaxseed or make herbal powder balls?
    I was thinking about purchasing some herb powders, mixing it with water to make a paste and roll into balls. I can store these balls in the fridge. Will this work?

    One suggestion: if you need to break a treat, hammer it! Put on a bag and use a hammer or something heavy. 😉

    • @TheWillingEquine
      @TheWillingEquine  5 років тому +1

      Not a bad idea! Although I'm a little worried about having my horses chew something that requires a hammer 😅

      I have used the metal that like guides the stall door to break a big carrot😂😂 i couldn't break it, and my horse couldn't bite it in half so i balenced it on the metal and stepped on it lol!

    can't you just use carrots, apples etc cut in small pieces? :-)

    • @TheWillingEquine
      @TheWillingEquine  5 років тому +1

      You can, but they are very high value for my horses so they create "too much" excitement. So I use them for special food rewards

  • @paintponypatches

    When you feed the hay pellets do you give just one or a small handful?

    • @TheWillingEquine
      @TheWillingEquine  6 років тому

    • @paintponypatches
      @paintponypatches 6 років тому

      The Willing Equine Total in a session, but I mean like as an individual reward. After the click are you giving one little hay pellets or a few?

    • @TheWillingEquine
      @TheWillingEquine  6 років тому

      Oh sorry! Misunderstood. If I’m feeding out of my hand I’ll give a few pieces, sometimes combined with another treat. If it’s into a feed pan I’ll give a little more (like a tiny handful) since they don’t usually find them all because they are small and I’ll combine with a bigger one.

    • @TheWillingEquine
      @TheWillingEquine  6 років тому

      At minute 2:00 is about the amount I feed by hand. :)

      The Willing Equine lol no worries! Thanks! I'm wanting to switch to pellets but wasn't sure how much to use.
