isnt YOUR insurance supposed to pay the repairs and YOUR insurance company will charge/sue the uninsured driver ? why would you have to pay from your own pocket for someone who wasnt insured ...which is illegal ... im from canada tho , maybe things are different in U.S. .

because as you said your in canada!!!!! in the state of washington ( THANKS TO HE FU@! UP DEMARATS!) the illegal that hit her in a heavy rain storm that day was uninsured and high and the cops let him go , and they were on the freeway. so there was nothing done and no her insurance did take care of the car or her. and yes years ago that BASTER. WOULD HAVE WENT TO JAIL!!! so be happy you have laws that are on your side.

In the US there is a couple types of insurance you can get for yourself. One is liability only that only takes care of damages to the other car if the accident is your fault. It offers no coverage for your car if the accident is your fault. If it is the other car's fault liability insurance doesn't do much unless you have uninsured or under-insurance coverage.
Full coverage including comprehensive and collision coverage covers your car no matter the fault. It is more money per month and is usually not worth the expense unless you have a more valuable vehicle.
There is a surprising amount of vehicles and semi trucks that drive the roads without any insurance.
