  • Alan Dobie stars in this highly acclaimed classic series written by award winning crime writer Peter Lovesey. Known for his wry sense of humour, Cribb is the backbone of Scotland Yard´s newly formed Criminal Investigation Department aided and sometimes hindered, by the faithful Constable Thackeray.
“The Hand That Rocks The Cradle”
After a pram containing Queen Victoria's grandson Prince Alexander accidentally rolls away and nearly collides with the monarch the nursemaid is sacked, creating a vacancy. The child's parents want young, progressive Miss Temple but the queen is in favour of her daughter's old nurse, Mrs. Innocent, an austere, gin-swigging old dragon. The child's father Prince Henry asks Cribb to investigate Mrs. Innocent, currently employed in caring for the 2 children of an eccentric composer, for proof of unsuitability through senility. Cribb investigates and finds that the pram was sabotaged in order to create a vacancy close to the Crown. The two candidates for the nursemaid position come under suspicion.

According to IMDb, it's a chap called John Murphy, casting director, to thank for the wonderful cast in this episode. Rosalie Crutchley drives everything she's in up by a notch or two.

Hiya...thanks for your comments...I hadn´t realised that I had the cast list wrong for this episode...I was going away and in too much of a hurry when I uploaded it!!! I´ve made the changes now....cheers...one man band here so prone to errors!!!
Rosalie Crutchley...brilliant...just looking at her obit...love the opening paragraph...
"In her first film Rosalie Crutchley is asked by her former boyfriend how she has been doing and replies, "Me, I´ve had one smack in the face after another."Later she is strangled to death. The role was symptomatic of the sorts of parts for which the actress became best known - dour, pessimistic, rarely smiling."- Tom Vallance - The Independent- 1st Aug 1997

You had the casting director credit correct! And I certainly did not intend to point to any error! No, I'm a sort of amateur closet casting director - when I have difficulty getting to sleep, I entertain myself by recasting classic films in my head, when I think certain established roles would suit another actor/actress better. You can still see Rosalie's beauty in her youth when, at age 26, she was featured in Greta Gynt's "Take My Life." (1947, filmed in 1946). Although Sinead Cusack did an outstanding job as Mrs. Thornton in the 2004 North & South, I also loved Rosalie's performance as Mrs. T. in the 1975 version. I love the Cribb casts!

Hi R Simon...I actually had the whole cast wrong before I double checked so I´m pleased you said something about the casting director..I had to go back in and take another look!!!!
The Cribb casts are superb....you need to follow the comments along the way from "Gordon Bennett"...has has some fun things to say about the casts and the episodes in general.
"Amateur Closet Casting Director"...is their an Oscar or a DGA award in that category? Sounds like their should be :-)
As for recasting as a means to nod off to...I am envious. I unfortunately
have no head for names and faces...I will have to stick to counting sheep cos they all look the same!!!!!!

    Vaudeville Funtimes,
Thanks indeed for this excellent Cribb episode-as our hero gets to mix with the Royal household and has to deal with an anarchist threat-all the while having the envy of Inspector Jowett! Thanks indeed for providing this serial.

Wow! The actor playing Sgt. Crubb seems like an interesting guy. Strong, smart, intuitive,macho,confident.. Was he like that in real life? Or Thackeray? Was he a quiet nice big guy? Lol.
Btw, wasnt Duncan the lil blond boy? How fun

Rosalie Crutchley was hilarious in real life. She always played dour and sinister characters but she was the warmest funniest woman you could hope to meet and very beautiful in her youth

She should have knighted Cribb, that really would have upset his boss.

That woman playing the part of Queen Victoria is an insult. Yes in old age the Queen was fat but she was never rough, deep wrinkled, hard nor haggard. I live near Osbourne house and regularly visit the house and grounds and have access to the many photo stills of Queen Victoria throughout her life. This woman gives the impression Victoria was hard, which she was not. Her many hundred diary entries prove this.
