What bothered me about this top ten countdown and most others that include Super Mario the Lost Levels, is that they fail to mention Super Mario Bros Deluxe, I GameBoy color release of the original game, and once beating that, you unlock the lost levels. Most people don't acknowledge it.
I remember playing Battle Toads with all my friends in Grade 3. This one kid managed to waste 5 weeks trying to beat that damn speed run that everyone got stuck on. He came back from Summer Holidays with a Polaroid of him completing the level. He was never forgotten about.
When I was a young kid I spent hours mastering F zero GX and "got good". I also spent a lot of time playing melee and is why I know where capt. falcon is from.

@@jamestsoukalas5941 My friend told me about Sekiro when it came out and before that I hadn't touched a Souls game and barely seen any real gameplay. I beat Sekiro with sweat and blood and then my friend told me that Ds1 is a must. I tried that and gave up in the undead burg but he convinced me to keep going after a week. I hadn't played anything as hard as Ds1 so I decided to binge the whole series and Bloodborne (just finished today actually). My friends all ask me which one is the hardest and I think that it depends on which one people start first. After playing all of them (or some of them a few times) the game becomes essentially a rhythm game and it can be super easy on most bosses but saying Dark souls is easy is kind of a stretch. Its easy to someone with 1000 hours and heck its even easy for me who has a total of around 30 hours per game. Its definitely hard on your first playthrough and all of the bosses are usually hard the first time but if you can learn quick its possible to, as you said, "make them your bitch"
Dark Souls is a difficult game, but only in comparison to other modern games - whose core design philosophies are made to allow anyone to beat them. Dark Souls requires patience and repetition, like old NES era type games, but compared to them... it'd only be "average-hard".
Anyone who says that Dark Souls "isn't difficult compared to old games" and "is just repetitive block and attack gameplay" has clearly never played the game.

IRL is so hard you have to use reality checks if your dying which are so rare and to stay popular you are constantly changing the gameplay and there is no way to fast travel until you are sixteen unless you get the Western version
Here's the thing; In my eyes there are two types of hard: Adaptable: A game in which at first you are brutally murdered until you are accustomed to the games design and are aware of how to deal with enemies normally. Games like this may include Devil may Cry 3, Super Meat Boy and Dark Souls. Trial and Error: A game that is bad and hard by design in which you must memorize the worst parts in order to succeed. Games like this may include: Super Mario Bros. 2: Lost Levels and the original Ghouls and Goblins.
If you are looking for an "adaptable" game, look for roguelikes, where the levels are randomly generated and where it's permadeath. I recommend spelunky and the binding of Isaac (I know you didn't ask, but if you ARE looking...)
Clearly WatchMojo rarely played NES Titles with Silver Surfer,Dragons Lair,Double Dragon 3 and The Karate Kid all of those were harder than Dark Souls. Come on now.
+DisneyEndings I would rather have the difficulty in the games not be from poor design. Silver Surfer is unfair because they give you no room for error on minor things like walls. That's not hard, that's just stupid. That's like saying Tetris is the most impossible game because it never ends unless you do score attack. Dragon's Lair was not hard, it was tedious platforming much like Out of this world.
i actually beat battletoads when i was younger, that tunnel level was absolutely maddening. had to memorize that thing for a long time to finally get past it.
I don't know why some people keep saying that Dark Souls is the one of the hardest games ever made. It's a challenging and punishing game don't get me wrong, but it isn't as hard as some people say when you just pay attention and use STRATEGY! I guess gamers think this game is extremely hard because many of today's games are way too forgiving.
Yeah, although my friend and I did get to share a laugh. It was taking him FOREVER to beat two common monsters that kill him in 2 hits... only for him to find out that he went the wrong way and walked into a high level area.
people only consider it hard because they cant just pop the game in and start killing bosses. you need to learn, strategize, and soul grind before you can take on bosses.
Kylee Smalley and even that enemy (i think you talk about skeleton)you can kill them at lvl 1...you can kill all bosses and complete the game without armor and lvl...because is the way the game work: you know how to parry, backstab and stay carefull you win.
I agree. I'd rather play Dark Souls any day over some of the old NES titles. I had a harder time with their honorable mentions than I had with Dark Souls.
The most funniest thing about this video is the comment section. With people naming easy games as hard: LoZ:OoT, Kingdom Hearts, Mirrors edge, Jak 2, Turok 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, etc.... wow. You guys must really suck at playing video games. I'm just amazed at how people have gotten soft in recent years, when it comes to difficulty.lol
LoZ OoT has the water temple. Which isn't that hard, but it is possible to screw up the locked doors in a way that makes it impossible to beat. THAT is what pissed me off over, and over, and over... But yeah, other than that it really wasn't that hard. Majora's mask was a bit more challenging though.
M A IN I A C One thing is games that were designed as hard games because the devs did not know other thing (main reason why the NES games usually are ungodly hard), and another one is putting games made explicitly to be impossible, with cheap deaths and stiff controls intentionally. Battletoads is a "naturally" hard game. IWBTG is an "artificially" hard game (so to speak)
Dark Souls isn't really hard, UNLESS you learn how each enemy works, and how each attack works. Deaths correlate to you learning. That's what makes Dark Souls so amazing. The true learning curve of the game is why you love it and the need of overcoming the obstacle.
DS is a "hard" game for most due to the lack of hand holding. DS is one of those games that pretty much pays you to be cautious and wary. All the traps and pitfalls are avoidable. Kinda reminds me of the "Tale of two adventurers" video. Though, I do admit, getting into Anor Londo waa the tough part, and after that, obtaining the Lord Souls is the real challenge.
I think touhou should have been on it. On one of the games, to get a good ending, you have to go through on normal or higher mode without dying once. And on another, you have a certain time limit for each level to get a good ending
I've never even played I wanna be that guy but from the speed runs I've watched (yes speed runs where the player doesn't die and gets everything right) that game looks incredibly hard
First, bullshit artificial difficulty, the games on the list dont have (just extreme skill requirements) The traps on that game are impossible to predict. Second, no released games so I dont think they qualify for the list.
Jegue Perneta I absolutely agree. Without all the dark worldy and cotton alley stuff, it only takes about 12 hours to beat dr. fetus from having known absolutely nothing about the game.

The hardest games I've beaten so far (by no means the hardest ever, but I can't rate what I haven't played) 4. Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze (K levels) 3. Hollow Knight (late game and path of pain) 2. Adventure of Link (pretty much the whole game) 1. Celeste (the B-sides and C-sides)
There is something even harder than I Wanna Be The Guy, Kaizo Mario World, a Super Mario World rom hack that can kill you at the beginning of the hack. Don't believe me? Watch some videos on it. Don't Starve is pretty hard too, pretty much anything will kill, even darkness.

There are much harder games out there... this is the problem with WatchMojo; they don't know about things that are not popular. None of these games have anything on I Wanna Be the Guy.
It's probably that they made this for the average public. It's not made for a bunch of gamer nerds who look at this list through their coke bottle glasses and scoff because it doesn't include some obscure game that 3 people on Earth know about.

Funny thing about battletoads is that Turbo Tunnel is like 6th hardest stage in game. Hard game yet last boss is very easy you can literally beat her on first try .
Honestly, turbo tunnel does not do justice to how hard the game is. I can beat it fairly easily, but I cannot for the life of me get past level 9. Those g****** ducks!

I can't even get past level 2. T~T That little tunnel under the squid where there's spikes on the top and bottom and only a one unit space to swim through was literally impossible to figure out. Not even backtracking helped.
honestly dark souls isn't hard. it's the damn pvp that gets you. in the first playthrough, the only major threats are a select few bosses until you understand how to kill them, and all playthroughs after that you already know how every enemy moves and where it's weak spot is. that being said, those damnded silver knights on the ledge outside the castle pissed me off.
yeah its the people who don't like a challenge and then whine about it that blows it out of proportion the game it self is amazing and even the pvp can be great if you don't get a troll, gankers, or a lagspike (including people that use lag switches on console).
Tropic Pugs It's not that dark souls is overly hard, but it takes patience and observation to figure out the best way to fight enemies. Compared to a game like Skyrim where you just stand in one spot and smash a weapon, there is a level of fines that most people find trying. When I first started playing Dark Souls it was a disaster, but once I got a hand of the controls and just how tight the combat system was it got much easier.
razaelll Sadly true. I'm not good in those hard games but I saerch them beacause they are challenging and it's something you really have to practice a bit before playing through it. Well, osu! on insane was too hard for me, can't even get through the songs on medium.

I'd love to see another F-Zero game come out. Heck if Nintendo just remade GX in HD with online 30 person race multiplayer, and 4 player racing with the ability to add in 26 computer players, I'd call it the best racing game ever made.
missing out on a great game....i sought a challenge in gaming due to the garbage disposible games that have 5 hour easy campaigns out there...dark souls was a good challenge and an endurance/frustration game.

Nowadays we have a shitty 3d games which can be finished in hours. 2D rocks and as I said - this vid proves it.You don't need fancy polished graphics with thousands of pixels and textures to enjoy a game. I've been playing the Elder Scrolls series of games for years. Not boring, not tedious, and definitely not easy (unless you set it as so, then it'd be your own darn fault). Play Skyrim on Legendary and finish the main story line. In the wise words of Yoda, "Years you will play, young Jedi". And greetings from NY in the US to all you crazy Polish gamers : )
I agree with you my friend :) I didn't say ALL of the 3d games aren't worth playing. :) But I still think that 2d games are harder to beat than most of todays 3d :)

I think the hardest game, which isn't total trash, would be I wanna kill the Kamilia 3, but sadly, that it isn't so popular, but it is way harder than all of these games =/
Zanis Zanis Agree. Kamilia 3 is probably right at the edge of manageable enough for a good chunk of people to beat it. If it was just slightly harder I think it'd be only beatable by a few hardcore players who spend hundreds of hours on it. I also consider Kamilia 3 the hardest good game there is.

It's always a question of points of view 4) generally *rage games* like Cat Mario or Golfing Over It are considered most difficult games beacuse the gameplay doesn't stimulate the player and the """""fun""""" isn't enough to compensate the difficulty and furthermore because every single level is well studied in order to predict every player's moves, soooo good luck boys
Zachariah Adul there's this saying: if you can beat Touhou on Lunatic difficulty, you can beat the rain. if the rain is color-coded and you have a teeny-tiny hitbox.
Demon's Souls was much harder than Dark souls. There were no bonfires... you had to complete a full level and beat a boss on 1 try. Farm-able grasses (life items) made it a little easier in some ways than the limited estus flask, but it really didn't matter as using these items mid battle was difficult.
For ME: Dark Souls. Do you know what I did, After I tried to beat any of the bosses, I get so close to the until I die from it because it was hard. It got me pissed. So pissed I smashed the disk with a hammer, and vowed to never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER, play the game again!! GOD I HATED IT!!!!!!
When Dark Souls places over Ghouls n' Ghosts, you know your list just fucked up. And Battletoads isn't nearly as hard solo, even I've beaten the tunnel level and i'm just a scrublord.
I really don't get why people bash a list because "they got it wrong! Q.Q" when it's entirely their opinion. Remember, this is WatchMojo's Ten Hardest, not yours or mine. Oh, and since my multi-managing skills aren't that great, I can't even beat StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty on Normal even though every other mission prior to Char was relatively simple.
Watchmojo you guys gotta play the Super Star Wars games on Super NES. Super Empire Strikes back is an INSANELY difficult game and I have no idea why it's never mentioned in ANY list of the hardest games of all time.

Take it from me as somebody who has played both Ninja Gaiden Black and Dark Souls, Ninja Gaiden is way more challenging and rewarding than dark souls. Disappointed to see Dark souls higher on the list obviously due to its popularity and everybody that worships it just because it's a little challenging. I think anybody else who has played Ninja Gaiden can side with me on this one.

Prince Ashitaka I'm not for sure. I've beaten Ninja Gaiden Black on the hardest difficulty. (took many months). However, I have only played Ninja Gaiden I and II for the NES and I haven't beaten them simply because I just didn't put enough time into it. I feel like both games are very challenging in their own ways but I'm gonna have to say Ninja Gaiden Black edges out the originals just a little bit.

Gamalol Gamalol well I've already beaten both pacifist and genocide. Sans was hard, yes. Same with Undyne the Undying. And I once did a no-hit run on the first half of the Sans fight. (before the fake spare) Also a game being easy =/= easy to perfect run. True the second half of the Sans fight is quite hard because aside from the anti-gravity attack and the final non-special attack, everything is random.
Revenge of Shinobi on the Sega Genisis I remember being pretty hard although I only played it a couple times when i was little and I only got past the first level.
Castlevania III isn't that hard if you just go the Syfa route and blast everything with magic. Even Dracula is a chump if you've got Syfa. If you go the Alucard route, on the other hand... yeah, the game is insanely difficult.
@@Seoulwanderer I actually found the Alucard route to be easier since there are a lot of areas that can be cheesed with his bat form. But yeah Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse should've been on here imo, the last two levels nearly made me tear my hair out of frustration on my first playthrough

thepeoplehateu Oh no I died. Just most people make another character because they messed up on their first playthrough. I on the other hand beat it with my first ever made character because I chose stats that were suited to my playstyle, which I easily beat it.
first try in souls means nothing ..... its not that hard to beat if you just go from boss to boss and not worry about sidequests ... and how long did this first playthrough of yours take ? :)
For people saying Dark souls isn't ''hard'' it is for the generic cod duty gamers and players who don't have the patience to really get into the game. I'm telling of all the games i've played DS1 and DS2 were the most rewarding, most fun game experiences i've ever had.
I had mostly just played shooter games before dark souls and the second I started playing I noticed it getting easy, it isn't a case of learning the game it is a case of playing the game like back in the old days

If you don't believe me, I dare you to try either of them. You'll be astonished.
And you can also expect to see clips of Turbo Tunnel. What about Rat Race? Battletoads does have other difficult stages.

Here's the thing; In my eyes there are two types of hard:
Adaptable: A game in which at first you are brutally murdered until you are accustomed to the games design and are aware of how to deal with enemies normally. Games like this may include Devil may Cry 3, Super Meat Boy and Dark Souls.
Trial and Error: A game that is bad and hard by design in which you must memorize the worst parts in order to succeed. Games like this may include: Super Mario Bros. 2: Lost Levels and the original Ghouls and Goblins.
If you are looking for an "adaptable" game, look for roguelikes, where the levels are randomly generated and where it's permadeath. I recommend spelunky and the binding of Isaac (I know you didn't ask, but if you ARE looking...)

Karate Kid is by NO means a hard game. I beat that game in 15 minutes as kid, no problem.

+DisneyEndings I would rather have the difficulty in the games not be from poor design. Silver Surfer is unfair because they give you no room for error on minor things like walls. That's not hard, that's just stupid. That's like saying Tetris is the most impossible game because it never ends unless you do score attack. Dragon's Lair was not hard, it was tedious platforming much like Out of this world.

i actually beat battletoads when i was younger, that tunnel level was absolutely maddening. had to memorize that thing for a long time to finally get past it.

It's a challenging and punishing game don't get me wrong, but it isn't as hard as some people say when you just pay attention and use STRATEGY! I guess gamers think this game is extremely hard because many of today's games are way too forgiving.

Yeah, although my friend and I did get to share a laugh. It was taking him FOREVER to beat two common monsters that kill him in 2 hits... only for him to find out that he went the wrong way and walked into a high level area.
people only consider it hard because they cant just pop the game in and start killing bosses. you need to learn, strategize, and soul grind before you can take on bosses.

and even that enemy (i think you talk about skeleton)you can kill them at lvl 1...you can kill all bosses and complete the game without armor and lvl...because is the way the game work: you know how to parry, backstab and stay carefull you win.

LoZ OoT has the water temple. Which isn't that hard, but it is possible to screw up the locked doors in a way that makes it impossible to beat. THAT is what pissed me off over, and over, and over... But yeah, other than that it really wasn't that hard. Majora's mask was a bit more challenging though.
I loved Mirror edge! and i died a few times but it wasn't that hard, but a really good game.

M A IN I A C One thing is games that were designed as hard games because the devs did not know other thing (main reason why the NES games usually are ungodly hard), and another one is putting games made explicitly to be impossible, with cheap deaths and stiff controls intentionally. Battletoads is a "naturally" hard game. IWBTG is an "artificially" hard game (so to speak)

Dark Souls isn't really hard, UNLESS you learn how each enemy works, and how each attack works. Deaths correlate to you learning. That's what makes Dark Souls so amazing. The true learning curve of the game is why you love it and the need of overcoming the obstacle.

DS is a "hard" game for most due to the lack of hand holding. DS is one of those games that pretty much pays you to be cautious and wary. All the traps and pitfalls are avoidable. Kinda reminds me of the "Tale of two adventurers" video. Though, I do admit, getting into Anor Londo waa the tough part, and after that, obtaining the Lord Souls is the real challenge.

I think touhou should have been on it. On one of the games, to get a good ending, you have to go through on normal or higher mode without dying once. And on another, you have a certain time limit for each level to get a good ending

There is something even harder than I Wanna Be The Guy, Kaizo Mario World, a Super Mario World rom hack that can kill you at the beginning of the hack. Don't believe me? Watch some videos on it. Don't Starve is pretty hard too, pretty much anything will kill, even darkness.

There are much harder games out there... this is the problem with WatchMojo; they don't know about things that are not popular. None of these games have anything on I Wanna Be the Guy.

Funny thing about battletoads is that Turbo Tunnel is like 6th hardest stage in game.
Hard game yet last boss is very easy you can literally beat her on first try .
Honestly, turbo tunnel does not do justice to how hard the game is. I can beat it fairly easily, but I cannot for the life of me get past level 9. Those g****** ducks!
Thing is, the Turbo Tunnel is the first uber-difficult stage of the game; few people will get past it to see the even harder ones.

I can't even get past level 2. T~T That little tunnel under the squid where there's spikes on the top and bottom and only a one unit space to swim through was literally impossible to figure out. Not even backtracking helped.

honestly dark souls isn't hard. it's the damn pvp that gets you. in the first playthrough, the only major threats are a select few bosses until you understand how to kill them, and all playthroughs after that you already know how every enemy moves and where it's weak spot is. that being said, those damnded silver knights on the ledge outside the castle pissed me off.
yeah its the people who don't like a challenge and then whine about it that blows it out of proportion the game it self is amazing and even the pvp can be great if you don't get a troll, gankers, or a lagspike (including people that use lag switches on console).

Tropic Pugs It's not that dark souls is overly hard, but it takes patience and observation to figure out the best way to fight enemies. Compared to a game like Skyrim where you just stand in one spot and smash a weapon, there is a level of fines that most people find trying. When I first started playing Dark Souls it was a disaster, but once I got a hand of the controls and just how tight the combat system was it got much easier.

Dark souls is a great example of the old school formula put into a long 3d experience.
I think the hardest game, which isn't total trash, would be I wanna kill the Kamilia 3, but sadly, that it isn't so popular, but it is way harder than all of these games =/
Zanis Zanis Agree. Kamilia 3 is probably right at the edge of manageable enough for a good chunk of people to beat it. If it was just slightly harder I think it'd be only beatable by a few hardcore players who spend hundreds of hours on it. I also consider Kamilia 3 the hardest good game there is.

2) (linked to 1) difficulty depends on your favourite genre, for example if you are specialized in bullet hell probably you will find hard playing in a fps arena
3) difficulty can means how many times you die, how hard you can find hard the system of gameplay, how little stimulating the game can be. It's always a question of points of view
4) generally *rage games* like Cat Mario or Golfing Over It are considered most difficult games beacuse the gameplay doesn't stimulate the player and the """""fun""""" isn't enough to compensate the difficulty and furthermore because every single level is well studied in order to predict every player's moves, soooo good luck boys

Demon's Souls was much harder than Dark souls. There were no bonfires... you had to complete a full level and beat a boss on 1 try. Farm-able grasses (life items) made it a little easier in some ways than the limited estus flask, but it really didn't matter as using these items mid battle was difficult.
I found Demons souls the easiest out of the souls series. At least until Elden Ring.
For ME: Dark Souls. Do you know what I did, After I tried to beat any of the bosses, I get so close to the until I die from it because it was hard. It got me pissed. So pissed I smashed the disk with a hammer, and vowed to never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER, play the game again!! Take it from me as somebody who has played both Ninja Gaiden Black and Dark Souls, Ninja Gaiden is way more challenging and rewarding than dark souls. Disappointed to see Dark souls higher on the list obviously due to its popularity and everybody that worships it just because it's a little challenging. Prince Ashitaka I'm not for sure. I've beaten Ninja Gaiden Black on the hardest difficulty. (took many months). However, I have only played Ninja Gaiden I and II for the NES and I haven't beaten them simply because I just didn't put enough time into it. I feel like both games are very challenging in their own ways but I'm gonna have to say Ninja Gaiden Black edges out the originals just a little bit.

Gamalol Gamalol well I've already beaten both pacifist and genocide. Sans was hard, yes. Same with Undyne the Undying. And I once did a no-hit run on the first half of the Sans fight. (before the fake spare) Also a game being easy =/= easy to perfect run. True the second half of the Sans fight is quite hard because aside from the anti-gravity attack and the final non-special attack, everything is random.

Castlevania III isn't that hard if you just go the Syfa route and blast everything with magic. Even Dracula is a chump if you've got Syfa. If you go the Alucard route, on the other hand... yeah, the game is insanely difficult.
@@Seoulwanderer I actually found the Alucard route to be easier since there are a lot of areas that can be cheesed with his bat form. But yeah Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse should've been on here imo, the last two levels nearly made me tear my hair out of frustration on my first playthrough

Dark souls hard? That's funny. Ninja gaiden Black easily tops it. I easily beat Dark souls my first try. But the game is great and is rewarding.
What do you mean you beat it on your first try? saying you didn't die? If so you could easily be lying.
thepeoplehateu Oh no I died. Just most people make another character because they messed up on their first playthrough. I on the other hand beat it with my first ever made character because I chose stats that were suited to my playstyle, which I easily beat it.
DrCoding i beat NG+6 on my first character not knowing what i was doing when creating my character but it buffed out.
first try in souls means nothing ..... its not that hard to beat if you just go from boss to boss and not worry about sidequests ... and how long did this first playthrough of yours take ? :)

For people saying Dark souls isn't ''hard'' it is for the generic cod duty gamers
and players who don't have the patience to really get into the game.
I'm telling of all the games i've played DS1 and DS2 were the most rewarding, most fun game experiences i've ever had.
I had mostly just played shooter games before dark souls and the second I started playing I noticed it getting easy, it isn't a case of learning the game it is a case of playing the game like back in the old days

It's still hard, but it isn't as hard as the other games on this list. I've also played Super Meat Boy and that one is definitely tougher.
pirateking2 I've played Super Meat Boy, aswell and it's really gettin' tougher each level but Touhou has still deserved the top of the list.

While Touhou on Lunatic Mode makes you want to smash a whole into your screen, on Easy mode it is almost no challenge at all.
that depends on the game, also easy is not an option for REAL touhou players ;D
