- This video shows you how to make a very inexpensive casting sifter that work with the standard Lowes Mortar tray.

This sifter works really well and is very durable. It is pretty simple to put together. It has a large surface area so it sifts very quickly and the mortar trays can hold a lot of castings. It glides on the lip of the tray so it is almost effortless to use.

BEST IDEA EVER!!!! Just be sure to purchase the tub first in case the size is different…
Yes….that would be a good idea….😊😊
Tom, I just completed my first sifter with 1/8" screen and it works like a charm! I did few things just a little different, for what it's worth: when it was time to put the second runner on, I put my tub on the sifter upside down and screwed in the runner. The gap was perfect. I also stapled the screen to the frame before putting the screws in, which prevented the boards from moving. Lastly, I put a 6" aluminum handle on it because I was concerned about stress on that piece of wood. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your detailed, very well explained video. Thank you! Tomorrow, I will assemble the 1/4" sifter!
Thank you sooo much for this video! Today, I bought my wood and hope to get two built in the next week or so. Love this idea - wish I had thought of it! Thanks again!
Perfect tutorial I was looking for...I had the idea just, just needed to see it and this works exactly as I wanted it to. Keep Crushing It!!!

I am so proud of my new sifter! Thanks so much for your great instructions!
Great idea Tom! Thanks for sharing. I love my Mammoth bag.
This is great. Thanks so much! Sifting is no fun unless you have a sliding system like yours. I'm definitely saving this video!
Love it! Thank so much I just received my worms today. Very good video 👍
Really simplified. I love it.
you have made my day man. thanks!
Thanks for sharing Tom!
I am thinking about building the rail system free of the sifter box in a way that locks the sifter onto the rails. I have 1/4" hardware cloth at the moment and building in two parts would let me create more screens to lock into the box if I want a finer sieve later on.
Super helpful in my own design process to see yours!
Such a great idea. Thank you very much for your tutorial. I will figure out by converting measurements to metric.
Great idea. Thanks for the info.
Hey Tom I just made one of these sifters it works great!!! Thank you for the instructions on how to make it. Great video!!!!
I'm glad you like it......it does work great.....so much less effort than other methods I've seen....and actually pretty easy to make too.
Great video. Thank you
Great video- thanks
Hello Tom, Thank you so much for posting this great video. I just finished making mine and it works fantastic! Worked exactly as advertised! Blew through our first harvest of worm castings in mere minutes!
I will post a link to my photos so you can see how it turned out!

I'm glad it was helpful to you. I know I use mine all the time and it will really blow thru the castings really fast...as I always say ...my time is valuable, so anything that saves me time...I like :)
@@vermibagcompostinggardenin5815 Thanks! We are adding in the plastic bowl in the middle of the worm castings as you showed in another video. Excited to see how many new worms hatched in the harvested castings. Happy Holidays to you!

Thanks works great
very interesting,thankyou very much
Nice and simple. ALMOSTas good as mine, lol. If I'd planned a little better, I'd have the slide rails too. If you can get your hands on some good old fashioned paste wax for car finishes- rub a little in on your contact (friction) surfaces. Old wooden drawer furniture trick before plastic and roller bearing drawer glides. Very well done & Thank You, Sir.

Thank you so much!!
very smart thank you
thanks!!
Great tutorial, thanks! I’ll be making one of these soon. What type of wood do you suggest to use for this?
Cool!
tttthhhhaaannnkkk yyyooouuu! wonderful instructions.
I built this today. 1/4 screen, but galvanized metal (all I had). I have to file off the tape measure bumps on my tote, makes annoying sound.
I started to make this but can't seem to find the correct screen? Any suggestions
Hi Tom can you please give me the correct screw size to purchase? Thank you
Nice! Does the 1/8" also screen out the cocoons?
The screen I use doesn't catch the cocoons...would have to be a little smaller or a square 1/8"....mine is actually 1/4" x 1/8". Diamond mesh.
Where do you find them screens?
where did you buy the mesh?
What is the volume of your mortar trays?
I am hoping to make one but I want 2mm screen opening. Unfortunately it will cost me almost $50 for that size as I can only find it on Amazon. Hope my hubby can figure out the directions because he will be making it. Lol
Catherine Fredericks I found this on Amazon a while back and I think you could make it work...not sure exactly how small it is but it’s worth a try for only 7$

Hey Tom, are you still in Italy? If so, me and my family are moving to Cremona for a few years. And then to either Portugal or Spain.
Hummmm had to look that up.....up by Verona....nice area. I lived in Vicenza for 7 years...but I dont think I have ever been to Cremona. I have a couple more years and then I'm finally going back for good.
@@vermibagcompostinggardenin5815 You wouldn't know Cremona unless you are in love with the violin. This city is known as the birthplace of the violin. So everyone that want's to learn the finest lutherie techniques in all the world, comes to Cremona.
Now I have to as, you say you have a few years and you are back for good? Are you returning to the U.S.?
Wish you would demonstrate how to use it.
Great tutorial, thanks! I’ll be making one of these soon. What type of wood do you suggest to use for this?
Just a simple cheap Pine wood is fine or whatever you have on hand...but not treated wood.
