  • Mvskoke Etvlwv: Muscogee Creek Festival is a celebration by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma of its tribal history, heritage and culture. This is the second presentation of the day where Muscogee members share the unique choral style of Creek Hymnal Singing, which was adapted from hymns brought by Scottish missionaries in the 1800s and sung in the Muscogee language.
The festival was webcast and recorded in the Potomac Atrium of the National Museum of the American Indian on November 15, 2014.

There is still a Federally recognized Creek Indian Tribe in Alabama that parts of these came from and the name of the Tribe is The Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Atmore, Alabama. We did not go and had to prove our existence which finally was recognized in the early 1980’s through much hard work. No other Race has to prove their existence.

I am Muscogee but my family doesn't live near other Muscogee people, and I want to learn these songs. Is there somewhere I can get the names and lyrics of these hymns?

I agree. Muskogee territory used to be in the south, so there may be a connection there with southern hymns.

There is not only a connection with the songs but also the foods also. I do live in alabama and my great grand mom was a full blooded creek. I wished that i could have met her to know more of that part of my ancestory.

Yes because the Creek are Black and most stayed in Alabama and Florida, some mixed with the Choctaw in Mississippi instead of going on to Oklahoma. My Mom is Creek, my father is Choctaw. But, they kicked us out. 1866v 1978. A black Creek signed the treaty, but you let the $5.00 ones come in and now, blue eyes and blond hair run it! We are entitled we will be home. Hopefully before my Mother passes, that is all she wants. She remembers, she knows.
