Imagine finding an area which looks like it'll hold a relic, only for it to just.. not be a relic. It's made of the same material, but it just has no power; it is simple an ordinary object, made of strange material.
@@pig4295 Huh, good question. A relic could have an infinite amount of magic. Still, the material it is imbued with is fragile and not meant for fighting (only defense, which complicates things even more), or the relic has a limited amount of uses for its magic, once it is used up it reverts back to an ordinary useless object. The fact that wanderers don't know if a relic is cursed or not is already a risk, I can't even imagine a wanderer using up all the magic of a relic and not knowing it until it's too late.
Or imagine finding a relic after a long, dangerous journey but not being able to work out what it does. Maybe it's broken or worn out, but maybe it only has an effect in specific circumstances.
@@MCPhssthpok Interesting way to look at it, for all the wanderer knows the relic could have a mundane magical use that the ancient people used in their everyday life (no combative uses) like toilet paper. Imagine a world where ancient magical artifacts are revered, their true nature long forgotten after centuries of mythologizing. The wanderer stumbles upon a relic, an ornate, glowing object sealed in a lavish chest, surrounded by intricate carvings that tell tales of its "wondrous" power. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime find for any adventurer-legendary and priceless. Scholars might have speculated that it holds the secret to ultimate power, perhaps controlling the elements or bestowing eternal life. But as the wanderer carefully studies the artifact, nothing happens. No power emanates, no curses unfold, and no divine revelations occur. With growing confusion, they consult an eccentric historian who specializes in ancient languages. After intense study, the historian discovers that the writings around the relic are not grand proclamations of power but rather... instructions for use. The artifact, as it turns out, is nothing more than a magically self-cleaning object that ancient people used in daily hygiene routines-magic toilet paper, enchanted to remain perpetually fresh, durable, and always ready for use. In the ancient world, it was an indispensable tool for comfort and cleanliness, but nothing more. The twist is not just in the object’s function but in how far-removed modern understanding is from the relic’s original, ordinary purpose. The wanderer realizes that the relic was not revered because of its combat prowess or strategic importance, but because it was simply part of a long-lost civilization’s routine comfort. What was once mundane now seems extraordinary because of its sheer age and rarity. This shift in perspective adds humor and commentary on how history can distort and glorify things. The object might become a coveted piece for collectors and scholars, not for any dangerous power, but as a historical curiosity-a reminder that not all relics have grandiose or combative origins. It opens the possibility that many other “sacred” artifacts might also be everyday items, misinterpreted by those too far removed from the time they were created. The idea could be extended to reveal an entire collection of mundane relics. One might be a cooking utensil that magically heats food without fire or a cleaning stone that absorbs dust from surfaces. In this world, the line between the mythical and the mundane is blurred, showing how even the most routine aspects of life can gain mystique over time.
Well, stolen idea but it was a hit in my DnD campaign: a Soul Lantern. It's a lantern that, when grabbed, traps the user's soul in the lantern. They can only see from within the lantern, but they still can control their body - so their movements are disoriented since they're viewing themselves from the outside. From within the lantern, their vision is enhanced and they can see the true forms of all things, and even see guidance to things they seek. However, their soul becomes like a flame, and their soul perishes if the lantern's flame is doused in water.
Years ago...no, decades ago, I guess...I was writing a series of stories based loosely on some recurring dreams & dream themes. When I see your videos, I'm reminded of those old, now abandoned tales. My stories were set in a vast, semi-abandoned structure that looked sort of like a Mediterranean hotel or apartment building from the 1890s or maybe 1920s, though it often blended with other types of structures. Various people were lost within it, sometimes trying to make little communities or what have you. The ocean played an important role, and the structure was often built out over salty water. Tonally, my stories were very different, but there was a similar sense of nostalgic ruin about things. I think my stories had a more "pulpy" vibe, though. Like, the protagonist of one was a WWI pilot who got lost in a storm and ended up there, and at one point, he was on the run from some clockwork critters. Anyway. Really enjoying this project. And I appreciate having some old memories brought to the surface. Maybe I should dig through the stacks of old papers and see if I can find some drafts. Dust off the ol' brain and write something.
I'm reminded of _Mythago Wood_ by Robert Holdstock. It's about a small piece of ancient woodland which is much bigger on the inside, and is populated by figures from forgotten myths. It's set in the years after WW2. The further in you go, the further into the past you go, all the way back to the Ice Age. I was particularly reminded of it by the OP's mention of a pilot: the protagonist is accompanied by a pilot, who recognised the wood for what it is after a painful encounter with a similar wood in Belgium in the war. The protagonist is hunting for his brother for plot reasons, the pilot hopes to find a shining city which will cure his scars.
This world is a truly wormy and enticing place. When I watch your videos, I feel... a certain desire to explore the eternal ruins in person, to learn about the nature of the world and the objects in it. It's really cool!
Ooooh this was so cool and fun!! Glad more lore was shared about relics, they're very cool and I like that they're all made of the same stuff, that's such a cool detail
I like that you tell just enough to spark curiosity and interest while leaving enough mistery to let our mind play and evade. What I like most about settings as yours is the space between the lines that give it an unlimited room and appeal
The line Relics make a wonders other worlds make me think if demon and spirits use to be the old original inhabitant’s of the eternal Ruins, but were transformed by Relics and Cursed Relics. Or maybe Spirits and Demons in or of them self’s are a type of Relics. But who now’s that just a theory!A ETERNAL RUINS THEORY!!
Great idea of how to give exposition/insight to the world youre creating. I always liked little tidbits of journals and such by an in-world character, like it's their understanding and not yours... because you know all the answers already.. but the audience is learning for the first time along with those coming up in the world.
very nice ^^ I'm a magic item nerd and will be enjoying the relics for sure. All your ideas are very cute but ooze melancholy, which I like a lot and I believe the relics will feel vital to the worlds other lore too^^
the relics are definitely one of my favorite parts of the eternal ruins, so this video is probably one of my most anticipated ones! thanks for putting this one out there!
I would play a game about this, watch series about this, read books and comics about this, play a tabletop game with this setting, probably try to create my own fanart about this (even if it’s bad) and of course I WILL keep watching and supporting all of your videos about this and anything you make
It’s very postmodern to say that every idea has already been explored and that anything “new” is a rehash of old ideas. While this might be true, there is still a great deal of original work that can be created that takes inspiration for many places. I only mention this because I’m curious if you have read Piranesi by Susanna Clarke or Titus Groan by Mervin Peake. When I make comparisons to these works, I mean it as the highest compliment, as both are am among the best fantasy books that I have ever read. The world that you have built is only vaguely reminiscent of the worlds that these books describe and the addition of demons and relics and wanderers is still very original. I’m deeply impressed.
Oh wow, the art and lore for this one is astounding! Also, not gonna lie I'd probably want to be a Wanderer that carries a cursed relic. Just in case a fellow Wanderer encounter proves sus.
The sample relics are really cool. I might have to steal the top for a D&D game. I can see it being a little unreliable on an uneven surface and of course it would be almost impossible to keep the top spinning while walking over, say, a body of water, which would mean risking losing it if you had to leave it behind to spin
I just discovered this channel and caught up on all the videos. I love this world that you’ve created! I have a lore question: -Do the wanderers simply not age or do they just die before they reach adulthood. Are there any adults in the eternal ruins?- Edit: just read the faq on the discord, so I guess I’ll change my question. How long is the average lifespan of a wanderer? What age is the longest living wanderer? Are wanderers effectively immortal as long as they don’t get killed?
Can the cursed relics still be useful despite having harmful side effects? And the part about some relics being able to hurt the true form of a demon... That opens the possibility of becoming a demon slayer if you're brave and lucky enough. Would they also be able to harm spirits as well?
Yes the cursed relics are still useful, in ways that others aren’t. They’re usually more useful for handling demons. Good questions on if they harm spirits. I need to think about that.
You said that a wanderer who’s survived many bells are changed by the artifacts they hold. What if, when a wanderer survives long enough, their artifacts transform the wanderer into a demon or spirit. Where that is one way the ruins creates new beings to inhabit her halls.
