I played collegiate tennis and if one of my rackets were even 1-2 grams off they played completely different. I can’t imagine how different a gram would affect a paddle. Pro tennis players spend sooo much money customizing their rackets to match overall weight, and swing weight. I don’t get why these pro table tennis players don’t do the same. There’s a market for paddle customization services that needs to be utilized if your livelihood depends on it.
Actually they do have several similar paddles given to them by their sponsors, since they can't keep their main paddles after the match. Usually they train using the so called back up paddles, so imo the back up paddles play similar to the main paddle.
In tennis we're hitting balls that are 50g+. Table tennis balls are less than 3g. Everything is amplified when the ball is that light. A fraction of a gram could make all the difference.
@@feeltheslipstream I absolutely agree that the difference is amplified for table tennis. I modify match my rackets to the 100th of a gram. I’m sure a professional could modify even more accurate than that for table tennis. 🏓

As a table tennis player in a district club, I can relate to this completely. Getting used to a specific racket and then suddenly have to switch to a different one is a disaster. You'd only be lucky if you manage to keep your cool during those moments when it's in the middle of an important match. It also takes more than a day to get used to a new racket. So as a Swede who was inspired by Truls who defeated him, I can only say our win was out of luck.
Im a table tennis player and you guys might think that it ain't matter it is just a paddle. But no its not just a paddle, it is usually setup week earlier(custom part etc.) and breakin just enought to have a good feel. And having to use an extra or new paddle can cause different feeling. And it also adds up to his zone and mental stae while in the game.
That's not what "we guys" think. We're just wondering why an elite level athlete wouldn't prepare properly and have multiple paddles with the exact same configuration. By only having one piece of equipment that you're comfortable with and setting yourself up for failure
I saw that. Then one of the worker there broke one of the Chinese players rackets and he still had more games. I know abiut this bc i watched this on wechat
Just to make it Clear it wasn’t a Swedish reporter Breaking the Padel like some People see to suggest. It was a completely unrelated country and Truls played the tournament of his life so I think little bit unfair think he only won because of the racket and also people blaming us swedes for cheating! (Swedish born athletes are almost never cheating in elite sports, it goes against our culture) !
@@douglasidly8679 yeah, it’s really not important how you see this issue from common sense pov. The paddle is not solid piece of wood, it’s layered, therefore retains more elasticity(more force gets transferred to the ball, than it would with solid piece), in the place where handle is glued it’s stiff, if there’s too much force applied in the weakest point, layers of paddle break.
Not a professional but still a table tennis player here, our bats are actually rlly important to us both in the performance and personally. I have used my own bat for the past three years, and i’m super used to it and how i can use it to my advantage. However, if i suddenly swap my bat during an important competition i would most likely lose…

I do competitive shooting, I've shot the same glock for both training and shooting in matches for quite a while. I ran a course with a 2011 once, it feels way nicer than a glock, I didn't do too bad with it but it isn't as good as my performance with a glock, because I'm not use to it. Wang Chuqin is a professional athlete who trained and played way more with his main paddle, not being able to use the equipment he's used to will definitely make a huge difference
From my years of playing table tennis, and as a full time attacker, I got to understand that anything that threatens your pace of mind in a tournament, just say bye bye to a medal.
honestly, the feeling of your own equipment is different from a new one. its like when you buy leather boots, once you've broken them in its comfortable as fck, but getting a new one again is a nightmare, so most people just get it repaired and renewed with a cobbler so they don't loose the comfort.
Because, like the commentator said, still got matches, so u can only celebrate the gold medal for minutes not even hours, so that's why he's very upset that his paddle broke
Funny enough, it was a Chinese journalist that broke his paddle. Though a paddle wouldn't be the cause for his defeat, it would just how the game was played out. Source: David Zhang from China Insider.

Chinese pingpong player: my paddle is broken 😭😭
Tennis player: crashing three rackets in pure anger
Haha true
Tennis? Ooooh boring. Next!
don't be an idiot. a tennis racket weighs around 11 ounces, a table tennis bat is abt 3.2 ounces and each bat will differ because wood is not a homogeneous material like the graphite used to make tennis racquets.
The difference is that tennis players can just switch to another racquet. For table tennis, no racket is the same as another, even if it has the same equipment. And almost all rackets take atleast 15-20 days to get used to
@@thechadladd this is funny... In tennis and in golf they need absolute silence ... In darts the crowd shouts like madmen ...
It takes months to understand our paddle. That's why it's special and unique as well. Even we switched into the same exactly paddle, there will always be a different feeling than the last one.
I agreed because maybe that was a certain paddle that he like custom-made or something but you can tell the pattern is different from the one day gave him Advil replacement I think he should have won
Sorry if that sound like hating I'm not trying to hate 😅

Did you comme the same thing on the the stolen pole vault video ? Or no because the victim isn't Asian?
@nocturnalwolf7559 I haven't seen that video. Funny how you're trying to turn this into something that its not.
I disagree. In the world of professional sports, let alone in a competetive setting, your mood, condition, head space and such matter a lot. This is why pro athletes take a whole day or two before any event to gather, collect and fine tune themselves, not just physically but mentally just as much.
@nocturnalwolf7559 she didn't have an identical pole genius, this guy probably had 6 more rackets like this one
@@chuckd5819No he doesn't. He has played with that same paddle a lot. Slightest difference destroy the feeling. Sucks feeling behind before singles started. Baseball is the same.
It's really sad, worst when focus plays an important aspect towards the championship. That racket must have lots of historical and memories in it. Hope he can find his talent back and get over his sadness.
A paddle you've used to win every match it's not the same as a new one

A player's bat/racquet/paddle is very special, especially a top player's. They customize it according to their strengths and balance it according to their grip by adding weights. It takes a lot of time to perfect it.
As a badminton player I agree, I'm used to heavy rackets but when I use light racket it just feels different... They are more lighter but my smash doesn't really align with those racket

You dont know how players treasures thier own stuff so you dont know how he felt when something that you treasure is broken . I understand him perfectly .
Yes, because now that it was broken on video he can't sell the winning racket multiple times over the internet.
As someone who played table-tennis for years a racket is literally the most important part of your life. Some might say any old racket helps. Yes it might to get that ball across but that's not the point. It's just not. The same technique you want to use might not even begin to look like what you want it to. It's just important to have that racket. The worst is when you use it for matches over and over again and you're so used to it it's just so hard to use it the way you're used to. Can't imagine the devastation he felt when it broke. I would've bawled my eyes out
You would have bawled your eyes out?! My goodness. Come on now. Bawled after winning gold because your bat broke? How many singles matches did he win with the replacement bat? Plus, really, we should have at least two, possibly three that are played with prepping to the olympics. One needs to prepare for a bit of adversity.

I’m guessing you never played any sport where you needed equipment like a baseball bat, tennis racquet, hockey stick
Or were never good enough to care

@@blakebarone1809 not talking about him I'm talking about myself. The racket itself costs too much in the first place and the racket is literally a part of your body for a table tennis player. That's how important it is for you. I agree you can have extras if you want but it's never the same as the original. You just don't have the feels down either
@@DW-op7lybut if your career depends on that one piece of equipment, you're not that great being so vulnerable to equipment malfunction
You should obviously keep an arsenal of paddles ready
For anyone who doesn't understand the significance of this since not many people play table tennis/ping pong, just imagine if you were playing like a basketball finals and you were shoeless -
Any sports that requires you to use a personal equipment has a special bond the same way we have with our pets and people. Imagine you receiving your first volleyball/basketball/racket and in all your years of using it through training and competition, suddenly broke beause of someone's recklessness. It's a tragedy ngl
I'm an badminton player and i can understand his pain , its not just about broken paddle when we are on court our racket is our partner we do not play alone we play together theres different kind of affection you get , sane happened with me the racket which i loved the most broke and after that for many days i was out of form
Ye when I played badminton in school I had marked a racket and I always had to use that racket otherwise I could not play I wonder where that racket is now
Same As an archery player i can understand his situation. Cause I never feel confident without my archery bow and my arrows. Cause they are personalised. It's a kind of attachment and comfortability.
i think the difference of paddles didn't affect him much, but rhythm is destroyed because of paddles and his emotions is in chaos that's what affecting him....
he can get used with new paddles after using it in training but his losing his paddles will affecting his performance...
I think that affected his psychological state here even the substitute racket might be identical in dimension and weight etc. players are superstitious.
Can one imagine if a pro golfer having his main driver or putter damaged during an event. It probably takes a few rounds or longer to adjust to a new club.
The paddle can't have been that important or he wouldn't have left it lying around for someone to step on.
As a tennis player.. this is accurate
@@themountain3461maybe you can never get an identical one? Like the “feeling” etc.
If paddle so important, don’t leave lying around. Guard it like your child.
He put it inside his suitcase in players’ area, but unfortunately leaved that opened and reports violated rules
Everyone have their own lucky charm… who knows.
But this definitely gets into his head
Trust me, it does make a lot of difference.
If you break your paddle, then even though you can get another paddle, you won’t get used to it in time.
This tells us that although it'a just a paddle that people don't think much of it but to someone, it's not just a paddle. I hope you understand ❤
the paddle is basically an extension of a player’s limb so effectively that reporter just broke this guy’s arm
I mean it's still Truls Moreghard, top 10 in the world, he's a beast, it's possible he was better that day

They are investigating the reporter for intentionally breaking the paddle as ping pong paddles are extremely hard to break
Stop it they are not
They’re actually extremely easy to break. Especially where paddle meets the handle.
Yeah, a bit doesnt make sense. The handle of the paddle is sturdy.😮
They actually are very easy to break. I know cause I have stepped on a few and they have broken. Wasn't even my full weight.

Not a professional but still a table tennis player here, our bats are actually rlly important to us both in the performance and personally. Mentality at that point. Regulations are held so that you dont get an advantage based on ur equipment like the paddle. But it was HIS paddle so it just disrupted that good energy he had 🤷♂️
That guy was thinking about that paddle the entire match, whither he wanted to or not.
The paddle was not the one that's broken but his focus and mental state....
It shows how passionate he is
The reporter didn’t accidentally brake it he purposely stepped on it and broke it with his hands
You realize the reporter is a pro CCP influencer from China right?
This is clear example of when mind and body is not one his body was there but his mind was still upset
He won a gold medal but was upset moments after. That racket must have been special.
Because, like the commentator said, still got matches, so u can only celebrate the gold medal for minutes not even hours, so that's why he's very upset that his paddle broke
the area was actually reserved for players and coaches only and the reporters just rushed in like they had no freaking clue
I've been playing table tennis for 13 years. It's IMPOSSIBLE to "accidentally break" ANY paddle. I wonder how this happened?
True...
