  • I've been hearing the phrase, 'but I tried hard' from students when they get their assignments back.
And in this video I explain why trying hard is not enough by itself. But what can we do along with trying hard to help build resilience in college and in our lives? What does resilience mean for students and for student success?
Resilience is a main proponent of building skills related to joy and happiness. So, let's learn about the importance of failure, and examples of resilience in life, so that we can continue to create lives that matter to us.

I take a minute to step back and assess where I failed, and using that information, I create my next attempt in a way that helps me fill the gaps from my first attempt. I do this using feedback that I'm given, knowing that instructor-provided feedback is never meant negatively, but purely constructively.

Lara Naomi haha- seems strange to write that failure is super important... and yet, I agree that it is :). Thank you for watching!

When something isn’t working, don’t scrap the entire thing. Find outside perspective from someone else or make minor changes until it starts to work. It’s easier to edit a C paper than to write a whole other paper. Keep moving forward and don’t dwell on past mistakes. Great video!

That's a great perspective to take when editing and looking at your work! I agree that tweaking is often easier than starting over! Thank you for your input. So appreciate you!
Who do you usually go to for an 'outside perspective'?

Eli Magids ha- you’re right that a kabillion is not really a number ;). And I’m not in the business of judging. Thank you so much for your comment and for watching!!! I also appreciate it. What is your first language?

Abdullahi Adan that’s awesome! And I’m impressed with the 10 minute nap (I think I’d stay there longer ;). Why do you think that helps you?

After I fail, I usually take a break from whatever it is and treat myself (usually with something sweet haha). Then with my fresh and happy mindset, I go back to it and contemplate what didn’t work so that I can avoid those issues the next time!
I think it is most important to take a step back and let the frustration of failure to dissipate, so you can not only feel motivated to start again but also go into it with a good attitude.

Tori Chandler Yes!!! I love this so much. For many reasons. I think the willingness to come back is so important. And realizing that a break is needed- even that you deserve a break and to treat yourself. Kudos to you.
How long do you find your breaks taking? Are we talking 20 minutes or days even?
