Hi, very good video! But I do not agree to Christian's conclusion that LR glow plugs did a better job than the ones from Bosch. Robbie writes correctly: "The plugs are self regulating; as the regulating coil is heated, due to heat transfer from the tip, its resistance increases and the current is reduced to the point where the tip temperature is stable with no risk of overheating (around 3 to 4 amps)." That means: The less current is needed to keep them glowing the better it is. Logical. But anyway - great to see how easy you can test it! Thanks a lot, Vera and Christian!!!
I enjoyed your glow plug comparison. You conclude the LR plugs to be the superior one as it maintained the most current draw over your test window. I would have thought that the key measurements would be how quickly the glow plug got up to temperature, how hot that temperature was, and the duration of that temperature peak. Those budget glow plugs performed pretty poorly!

Great video, I used your method to check each individual glow plug on my Ford Territory to identify that I have one defective glow plug that isn't pulling any current. The rest of them draw between 10-15A each. As an aside, the Ford Territory factory service manual here in Australia lists Beru as the OEM supplier of glow plugs for the 2.7L TDV6. A quick check online of the Beru parts catalogue shows that Beru glow plug model GN045 is what is recommended for the 2.7L TDV6 engine.

You put out some great informative content, just to let you know... Hi, used lots of amp pliers, but in the UK, we call them (Clamp meters). it is noted that your clamp meter registers both AC and DC, i.e. ac/dc great stuff looking forward to all the other videos.
Another very informative (and highly entartaining) video for which we all thank you! Christian, I may not have technical training, but I am a scientist and I like statistics. It's ideal to make sure that the TDV6 is happy on all parameters, as you put it and explain it so well. However, the numbers agree with me when I say that even if you take just 'moderate' care of your vehicle, the odds are in your favor, and your 2.7 engine should last for at least 3-400k km. It is a very small percentage of engines that die prematurely, like Fabian's. I think the problem with Fabian's car was it's past - it's extremely poor maintenance (also, EU4 engines are more problematic than our EU3 engines, particularly on the injection side). Also, despite the better harmonic dampening of the 3.0, the numbers indicate that it's more prone to premature failure (especially around 200k km) than the 2.7. Maybe it's because of the 8 speed gearbox which keeps the engine at very low revs (to my knowledge, this puts a lot of load on the engine), or maybe just because of the huge torque increase and what this does to the behavior of the driver . Cheers! Alex P.S.: I decided to change the glow plugs on my Disco right after purchase, together with the timing belts and oil pump. I was very "lucky" that one of the plug broke and fell into the engine... So my first experience with the Disco in the garage also included a head removal...
@@Vera_and_Christian This depends on a person's definition of "small percentage ". I tried to gather info from a large sample of vehicles with known histories, and guess what? A brilliant "Sunday Sermon" Christian and Vera. Thoroughly enjoyable and mega informative. From hearing some diesel start ups in car parks etc, I imagine that many drivers never consider the efficiency of the glow plugs or battery. So long as it starts!
Another informative video thank you. I am in Australia and I am not sure I have ever seen that glow plug symbol come on. I will look out for it next winter. I am in Melbourne so it does get cold occasionally.
Great video Christian and Vera. Just reminded me to check the plugs in my RR - your warnings got me obsessing with premature crankshaft wear. Another thing you touched on at the end was also what I have been wondering about as winter cold water swimming season is on - the timed heating. My RR does not have that feature enabled and my inquiries to the dealer went unanswered. I would love to have that enabled - any way an indie shop could do it? Also, would you consider doing a video on a remote module install for the FBH to be able to be turned on/off from a distance/inside of house without having to go through the menu and set the timed heating? Thank you.
My glow plug light on the dash is on for a very short period of time, nothing like the 7 or 8 seconds yours was on for. One of the benefits of living where I live in Australia - no snow here. Having said that, 99.99% of the time i do wait for the glow plug light to go out, even on a warm engine. On the odd occasion where I am in such a rush that I just turn the engine over, it does start okay, maybe 1/2 a crank longer, though you do hear it burdening the starter/battery more than if I wait for the light to go out. It certainly does not crank 2 or 3 times longer. The main reason why I prefer to wait for the glow plug light to go off is primarily because it is kinder on the engine, the starter and the battery. Oil is the life blood, the quicker the oil pump reaches operating speed, the better it is on my engine. It is important to let the glow plugs do their thing regardless of the area you live in. Even in the milder Australian climate that most Australians live in, or the Sahara desert. Your engine will thank you 😉
@@Vera_and_Christian During the last summer, my glow plug light never came on and the engine started OK. Is that normal - this is my first LR with a diesel engine. As the temps dropped, the light started coming on for 2-3 seconds, then the engine starts after about 2 seconds - do you consider that normal as well? TDV6 3.0
Thanks again for another great video Vera & Christian. I have needed to replace my glow plugs for 18 months , but i chickened out after reading that they can snap while removing them . So i bought a fuel burning heater remote from Bell Auto Services ( UK ) instead , as a temporary solution. I think the original glow plugs are made by Beru guys and are expensive, but i think I'll buy Bosch ones on ebay for around £55 for 6 ... thanks again from Graeme in UK ( a none sandal wearer lol )
Watching your videos and they are Amazing. I'm having my son which the engine rebuild series to help understand how engines work. Whats a good source for a LR4 2011 service manual? Thanks
For the LR4, they unfortunately do not have a paper copy from Haynes anymore. We always look on the Disco4.co.uk website for LR4 service manual information. I think you can also buy a digital copy of the service manual. 👍🙋♀️Vera

@@Vera_and_Christian you could build a really nice camper on a long wheel base chassis. With Christian's skills that wouldn't be a problem, whether it would get through the tunnels in the Alps or not I don't know.
You could argue the the original glow plugs pull more current for the same effect as the Bosch items. That might kill your battery unless it's really good? (Bosch for the win?)
Yes, I even checked if they sell red dust on Amazon but they don’t. May be a business opportunity for you. Germans would probably buy tons of it to make their SUVs look more exciting. Christian
Another informative and fun video.i have 5 out of 6 glowplugs gone 2007 tdv6 auto..i was not confident in changing them after my mechanic said that the glow plugs are known to snap off.so I had the aux heater pack fitted.which works from sending text.plus also activating headlights from key fob also turns on aux heater. I just found 6 bosch glow plugs on ebay for £55 .I will b ordering them as Christian has given me the motivation to change them. What is best way to loosen the original glow plugs. I'm thinking wd40 applying it 2 weeks before attempting to loosen them. Thanks Jason.
Another great video from you two. Can you imagine a cold start below -30C on a regular basis? That is my reality here in Norway. Anyways I just installed an altox gsm module, so now I feel more prepared for winter. I like to think my d3 will thank me by not breaking the crank. The fbh is too late to the party when is only starts after the engine is running and the damage is done. Interestingly, or as expected I should say, the glow plug lights are on for not even a second after the fbh has been running, and the car starts right up. A good investment for colder climates than Germany I think, but maybe I should look into my glowplus aswell. Cheers from Norway!
I fitted a box to activate my FBH via the Discovery 3 key fob. It stopped the engine judder on cold/frosty mornings if left on for 20 minutes. I didn't fancy attempting the glow plugs replacement due to them snapping. However after Christian and Vera's video today I will be purchasing an amp draw tester to see how bad or how many of my glow plugs are goosed out of curiosity 🤔 And yes glow plug lights for a second then straight off when the FBH has been on prior to starting. Definitely worth the investment to save on damaging the engine prematurely. Also this reminds me to give my battery a top up charge now it's getting cold again 😊
That is cold 🥶, we get here maybe -15 degrees at night. But it is definitely time for Fabians Disco to move out and us having our garage back for its intented purpose. 😃👍🙋♀️Vera
Two decades ago, I was in Brazil where it never drops below 22 C. Most cars there are minimalist as the most of the population is poor. One minimalist aspect was no fast idle on cold startup. Get in the car first thing in the morning, turn the key, and the engine idles at 600-700 rpm. Why waste fuel? And what are emissions?
See here all the way at the end! I am not sure if you need to take the fuel pump out to get to the last glow plug - I think not. ua-cam.com/video/Q8Q1vnPbQRw/v-deo.html Do not apply more than 20 Nm! If they get lose and then stuck, use a good penetrant over and over. You will need to wait a day and soke it, then worl it, soke it and so on. Worst case, they need to be drilled. This is a high risk job unfortunately. On Fabians car, they all came out nicely, no problem. Christian
If you plug in your IID tool without running the phone app, you will see it reports battery voltage on the car dashboard screen. Useful if you just want a voltage check.
I have to hold the button when it is cold. Like 1-2 seconds. It won´t start otherwise. At least I think I have to hold the button. Will try this again. Christian
It depends. The engine must be as hot as possible which means you burn your hands and you have to work quickly and remove stuff prior. Use 20Nm max. Still the tip may snap off and fall into the engine. There are posts about this in this tread. So it can be extremely difficult. Ours came out easy. Check our video “should have bought a Toyota” all the way at the end. Christian
Actually glow plugs (and injectors) seizing in the cylinder head is very common on modern Diesel engines. There’s a guy I know who makes a nice living travelling round workshops, including main dealers, removing glow plugs & injectors that are stuck. Some garages just have him booked before the vehicle comes in. They won’t waste time or risk breaking the glow plug.
Hi Christian and Vera, excellent upload. Very interesting and informative as usual. Do you have a link for purchasing a suitable Amp ⚡ draw tester? Thanks guys, stay warm 😊
Christian
Unfortunately, the values of the glow plugs in the IDTool cannot be displayed on my Discovery 4 from 2016. Fuel rail pressure, Engine input / output parameters- Glow lamp and Glow plug coil duty cycle do not work. I only have the ammeter to test.
dear people, I live in a warm place, I wear leather boots if you wear sandals how you gonna kick snakes in the face? um, tell me how, but another great vid, mine is Fluke 325 cost 405 dollars:((
9.3lt/100kms must be nice, for some reason I’m getting 16.8lt/100kms in the discovery 3 4.0lt v6! Went to the fuel pump today and paid $2.48 AUD per litre of 95RON. 😅
Good vid😀👍 But putting Denso double coil glow plugs on a LR, that is probably going a bit on the dark side for LR owners since it is a part of Toyota Group.
I have that option available so will try that and I also have a co2 cylinder I keep as a spare for welding might use that if I have and trouble to cycle the heat to help brake and carbon thanks for your reply
I remember parts. They used to be things you could obtain easily. ☹️ interesting how Land Rover plugs are better?? Wonder who makes them. Lucas ACDelco? Wonder if they are from a Ford supplier.
I bought a cheap Chinese pressure testing kit to set up my oil boiler, After several frustrating hours of the boiler not running I found the pressure testing kit was under reading by about 5 bars. 👍
Suggestion for Vera - as Fabian's new Glow Plugs are such "sheiße" (as you say in German), why not sell him the new Bosch set and then get a new Land Rover set for your Disco 3? With all the effort of rebuilding Fabian's broken engine, if I was him I would certainly not want to use such sub-standard plugs after all the enormous effort and expense of rebuilding that engine. 😉 😘
We actually might do that, if we can salvage the engine. That will be determined this week hopefully. Parts are slowly starting to arrive here at my house.👍🙋♀️Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian I really hope you can salvage Fabien's engine. I am enjoying the videos and hope it's something I will never have to have done myself.
Perhaps part 2 of this series could go on to explain why the German designed TD5 engine in my Disco'... which has 5 cylinders... only has glow-plugs on 4 cylinders? :-P Seriously, I know the TD5 engine was part of a stillborn project for BMW to produce 4, 5 and 6 cylinder engines. I wonder if they planned to only fit 4 glow-plugs to the 6 cylinder version of the engine too?
Nope, have not seen any strange solid water here in southern Spain, water is either warm and wet or missing 🤷 Also never seen the ‘snow flake’ symbol or outside temp reading in the instruments showing single fingers… are you sure your gauge cluster hasn’t got missing pixels and it was really 14 degrees 😂
Dear Christian, I am watching all your videos. I own a Range Rover Sport, as I wrote before in a video comment. The RRS and the Discovery both have the same 3.0 tdv engine so all your videos apply to me too. I have a proposal to you, of-course, if you have time. I strongly believe it would be a huge help to us all having the “Christian LR Gospel”. What am I referring to: - we all know the manufacture indications for the routine maintenance; but those data are incomplete or exaggerated or misleading. What I propose to you is to create this “Christian LR Gospel” which is basically a chart with all the maintenance should be done to the LRs with the 3.0 TDV engine. For example, this is my simple chart that needs your blessing and your supplementary data: 1. Battery - every 2 years (checked every 6 months) 2. Spark-plugs - every 50.000 km 3. Engine Oil + all filters - every 8.000 km (regular service) 4. Steering fluid - every 20.000 km 5. Brake fluid - every 30.000 km 6. Front+rear differential oil - every 30.000 km 7. Gear box oil + transf. box. - every 60.000 km 8. Engine oil pump - max. 150.000 km in use 9. Service/accessories belt - every 50.000 km I think there are more items to be checked or change in order to maintain our engine in the best possible shape and I strongly believe you would add some new lines and modify mines. As I said, I really believe such a Gospel would be amazing to have from you. So, please, Christian, when you have time, please write this chart, with all the data you think are important and with their maintenance period. Thank you so much, Valentin

Thank you.
I love these videos. You two are the best
Very much enjoyed this video. Definitely makes you think about checking the function of the glow plugs.
Regards
Peter
Your engine will thank you 😉
I agree 100%. The glow plugs help even in warmer weather. Thanks for your feedback. Christian
TDV6 3.0
@@TheMzx124 On mine LR3, the glow plug light does not come on in the Summer also, only when the temps start to drop. 👍🙋♀️Vera
Take Vera’s engine out and examine her glow plugs. or maybe not this is a family show😮❤
Have a look at this video😅ua-cam.com/video/kzovHLfiseE/v-deo.html🙋♀️Vera
👍🙋♀️Vera
You'd have made a great teacher. You'd would have also destroyed those pupils not paying attention with the disguised sincere sarcasm.. 🤔 Brilliant 😂 I Know, I remember a teacher like that, l learned a lot. Who says that the Germans have no sense of humour? 😂😂
Another fantastic video.🙌
Thank you.
wow very impressive
Nice one mate
Does the clamp meter have min/max function?
according to the description, yes, here is the link www.amazon.de/gp/product/B08JTLF4FG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 🙋♀️ Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian Yes, I see it clearly in the image. Set it for MAX next time and you will have the highest current recorded, but I do enjoy watching the guessing-game as it unfolds.
@@Michael_Mears It even has bluetooth, Christian just could have sat in the car and looked at it 😅👍🙋♀️ Vera
Maybe Christian needs to get a Unimog! I think he should have been a trucker or a tractor driver always listening out for changes in the sounds and characteristics
Oh we will get a Unimog at one point in our lives. Just as soon as we can afford one.😃👍🙋♀️ Vera
That engine bay on the D4 could do with some dust. Scandalously clean 😅
Yes, I even checked if they sell red dust on Amazon but they don’t. May be a business opportunity for you. Germans would probably buy tons of it to make their SUVs look more exciting. Christian
Vera you’re a rite Drama Queen 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 but we love it.
Thanks Jason.
the cheap china meter is commonly known as an " amp clamp" Loved the vid
However after Christian and Vera's video today I will be purchasing an amp draw tester to see how bad or how many of my glow plugs are goosed out of curiosity 🤔
And yes glow plug lights for a second then straight off when the FBH has been on prior to starting.
Hi! Can you link to the video where you replace the glow plugs?
See here all the way at the end! I am not sure if you need to take the fuel pump out to get to the last glow plug - I think not.
ua-cam.com/video/Q8Q1vnPbQRw/v-deo.html
Do not apply more than 20 Nm!
Can you please do a video on that gap tool and what it looks like and how to order it ordered I have a 2019 lr4
2019 ??? I thought production of the LR4 / Disco 4 stoopped in 2016 ???
When we are done with Fabians engine, we will do that. You can have a look here www.gap-diagnostic.com/ 🙋♀️Vera
Thank you
Hi, on my discovery 4 I only have to push the start button and I do not need to hold it down..
I have to hold the button when it is cold. Like 1-2 seconds. It won´t start otherwise. At least I think I have to hold the button. Will try this again.
Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian I do not have to hold even when cold, I just push let go and it starts
how hard was to take out the glow plugs, what can you suggest to be more essay to take out
@@hughmarcus1 Yeah it's a nightmare, and that is why we only fix our own cars. And Fabians engine. 😅👍🙋♀️ Vera

Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian okay.Danke für die schnelle Antwort. Mal sehen was länger hält. Die Kerzen oder Kurbelwelle 😪
How about block heaters
Unfortunately, the values of the glow plugs in the IDTool cannot be displayed on my Discovery 4 from 2016.
Fuel rail pressure, Engine input / output parameters- Glow lamp and Glow plug coil duty cycle do not work.
I only have the ammeter to test.
Yeah, with the Disco 4, everything just has to be different and more difficult 😃👍🙋♀️ Vera

Bit basic at the beginning for myself, but the side by side test of glow plugs was very interesting!

9.3lt/100kms must be nice, for some reason I’m getting 16.8lt/100kms in the discovery 3 4.0lt v6!
Went to the fuel pump today and paid $2.48 AUD per litre of 95RON. 😅
We only refer to Diesels, not Petrols. And only Christian can drive my Discovery with 9,3L/100km, I unfortunately need at least a liter more.🙄😅🙋♀️
Good vid😀👍 But putting Denso double coil glow plugs on a LR, that is probably going a bit on the dark side for LR owners since it is a part of Toyota Group.
super video! wo finde ich robin‘s guide?
There is a link in the video description. Christian
is its engine its own engine?
The Bosch used a lower amperage to light up compared to the original glow plug, so wouldn't that be better?
Surely original are Beru?
How difficult are they to remove with wd40 and patients? Is it worth the risk so many people state they snap so easily my d3 08 has covered 108k miles
When we changed them on Fabians engine, the engine was really hot and then we cooled the glow plugs with our air hose. 👍🙋♀️Vera
I have that option available so will try that and I also have a co2 cylinder I keep as a spare for welding might use that if I have and trouble to cycle the heat to help brake and carbon thanks for your reply
I've got all glow plugs do on my range rover sport, it doesn't like the cold and I went bosch great channel guys from UK 💯❤👍
I remember parts. They used to be things you could obtain easily. ☹️ interesting how Land Rover plugs are better?? Wonder who makes them. Lucas ACDelco? Wonder if they are from a Ford supplier.
They are either Denso or Beru, according to the comments to this video. 👍😃🙋♀️ Vera
I bought a cheap Chinese pressure testing kit to set up my oil boiler, After several frustrating hours of the boiler not running I found the pressure testing kit was under reading by about 5 bars. 👍
i would say the original glow plugs are made by Bosch?
No they are not Bosch, Beru is often OEM. 🙋♀️Vera

Oh shit in slow motion 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great video as usual this has made my Sunday night.thanks😄😄😄🏴
Glow plugs are one way to do this, a grid heater is another way
Perhaps part 2 of this series could go on to explain why the German designed TD5 engine in my Disco'... which has 5 cylinders... only has glow-plugs on 4 cylinders? :-P
Seriously, I know the TD5 engine was part of a stillborn project for BMW to produce 4, 5 and 6 cylinder engines.
I wonder if they planned to only fit 4 glow-plugs to the 6 cylinder version of the engine too?
With the Disco 4, you should reset the battery adaption when you replace the battery
When he gets a brand new one 👍🙋♀️ Vera
Nope, have not seen any strange solid water here in southern Spain, water is either warm and wet or missing 🤷
Also never seen the ‘snow flake’ symbol or outside temp reading in the instruments showing single fingers… are you sure your gauge cluster hasn’t got missing pixels and it was really 14 degrees 😂
No snow flake = one scary bing less. 👍 Christian
Dear Christian,
I am watching all your videos.
What am I referring to:
- we all know the manufacture indications for the routine maintenance; but those data are incomplete or exaggerated or misleading.
What I propose to you is to create this “Christian LR Gospel” which is basically a chart with all the maintenance should be done to the LRs with the 3.0 TDV engine.
For example, this is my simple chart that needs your blessing and your supplementary data:
1. Battery - every 2 years (checked every 6 months)
2. Spark-plugs - every 50.000 km
3. Engine Oil + all filters - every 8.000 km (regular service)
4. Steering fluid - every 20.000 km
5. Brake fluid - every 30.000 km
6. Front+rear differential oil - every 30.000 km
7. Gear box oil + transf. box. - every 60.000 km
8. Engine oil pump - max. 150.000 km in use
9. Service/accessories belt - every 50.000 km
I think there are more items to be checked or change in order to maintain our engine in the best possible shape and I strongly believe you would add some new lines and modify mines.
As I said, I really believe such a Gospel would be amazing to have from you.
So, please, Christian, when you have time, please write this chart, with all the data you think are important and with their maintenance period.
Thank you so much,
Valentin
