I can't stand when a product says Argon oil or Shea Butter and then when you turn over the package it's like the last ingredient in the product.

Naturals in developed countries, are just falling for all the exotic fruit labeling like avocado, papaya, mango, and ethnic sounding extracts/tinctures etc...I'm African and never saw my mother, grandmother and great aunts use anything but Shea butter, coconut oil solids or palm kernel fat, after washing their kinks with locally made black soap, and they all had healthy hair. I mean what do you think our ancestors used all over Africa, and continue to use presently, before the so called natural hair movement came into being, in the West? Even in America, African Americans wore their afros in the 50s and into the 90s, without using all these expensive products we waste so much money on these days. They just wash their hair squeaky clean with sulphate shampoo, and slap on Dax or Blue magic hair pomade and it grew.
We need to eat our avocados, mangoes, berries, leafy greens and healthy oils, so we can grow our hair from the inside because, these companies are still raiding our pocket books, the same way they did when we were relaxed. If I come up with a natural hair product labeled "HEALTHY COILS BLOWDRYING SERUM FOR NATURAL HAIR, WITH COLLARD GREEN and OKRA EXTRACT, everybody will flock to it lol, because that's how crazy we've become in the natural hair community...
I will not cite certain brands in my comment but, my question is, why market deep conditioning creams, shampoos, conditioners and so called masks (that's what they are called these days lol), in tiny jars, to the ethnic group with the bushiest hair/ thickest coils and massive curls in the world, for so much money?
Natural hair means freedom from fiscal chains, and liberation from being dictated to by the powers that be, about how to maintain our afro textured hair. We must emancipate ourselves from this exploitation, through natural hair products, geared towards our hair types because, each coming day reveals a new line and a new product; aimed at draining our pockets, just because we naturals have cultivated the habit of over emphasizing and complicating our hair care; which is actually giving rise to a surge in the production of unnecessary products that do us no good.

It's not inflation if the cost of products go up but the cost of ingredients remains cheap af. Coconut, castor, soybean, olive mineral (baby oil)- all these ingredients that comprise most of these products remain extremely affordable and cheap but you accept these tiny ass bottles of oil due to "inflation" of product costs and increased financial standards of living.
Small product retail businesses are naturally more expensive because of the increased cost of not purchasing in large bulk like larger companies and often times they use more higher quality, organically-preferred ingredients which naturally cost more. Just to make it clear, I am not referring to these businesses in the video. I am completely aware of their standpoint in the pricing of their products and support their businesses.
Lastly, yes it is great that natural hair consumers have more options when it comes to their hair, but don't confuse pretty labels with different colors, different fragrances, and promises of even stronger, longer hair. Products are temporary. You put them on, they wash out and they wear off. They are a supplement to your hair journey but not a necessity. Knowing that, understanding that, and being an informed consumer is the point of this video. If you got the money to spend on top brand products, then go for it. Just be educated about where your money is going.

I'm 3yrs natural. When I first started my UA-cam education (lol) I quickly became a product junkie. After a time I found my staple products by listening to my hairs needs. I'm not a fan of trying new lines at all! For my hair I use about 6 products in rotation. That includes 2 oils, a leave in, a cream and another styler and the conditioner that I prefer to do my co wash with. Everybody plays the fool at least once but let's wise up! Awesome vid.

Natural hair vloggers have inadvertently created a haircare marketing bonanza. Plenty of people have gotten rich from this movement, at the expense of curious consumers and product junkies. In addition, the prices are way above the market value of comparable products. Yes, we are being fleeced.

My corkscrew curls looooove knot today! It makes them so very soft! But I'm extremely low porosity. I think porosity makes a massive difference in what works. I buy it because it's cruelty free and oils (coconut, castor oil) don't sink in to my hair shaft. I can get regular aloe vera for cheap though, and that works. Sucks that it's $12... :/

Cassandra when I went natural again this time, Cantu used to be cheap, like under £3. Now a product is not under £5.00, they're nothing spectacular so because they increased the price with the boom, I do not buy that brand. They're not that good I want to spend the extra.

This video is the absolute truth! I've been saying the same thing about natural products for a while now. They use our terminology to market to us products we do not need, or multiple versions of the same product with ridiculous names like "twisting gel", "smoothing butter", "curling cream", etc. They do that so we end up confused and buying the whole damn line. It's overwhelming for new naturals with all these options.

It's not that serious that has been my regimen for years and this is the longest & healthiest my hair has been. Oh and other thing if you have no curl definition there is no cream, gel, or soufflé that can magically make curls pop. Preach honey!! People fail to realise that hair is dead! The only thang you need to do is keep the shit moisturized and sealed, and the best thing to do that i s water and some type of cheap ass oil/butter....hell even some blue magic gone do the trick. I f the shit is weak do a protein treatment a damn pack of palmers protein pack aint but $2. I got me a shampoo, conditioner, coconut oil, my spray bottle with water/aloes and a bottle of gel. I've been natural for six years I got hair down to my waist and I aint never spent more than $10 for a hair product....I prefer to spend the money investing in my health cuz hunty I eats well and I use that gym membership. I think a lot of what these women spend money on is trying to get the hair of other women they see on yt/instagram, they will buy 50-11 hair puddings to get the curl next door but eating mcdonalds for dinner 5 nights for the week...bye!

+Elise Wilson It works great for me, I use the blue magic coconut on damp hair not on ny scalp. It spreads good and only has two ingredients unlike the quote natural store products that have a laundry list of items. I had lots of products that did nothing for my hair, kept it dry. For me, Blue Magic is a keeper.

the vanilla and black bean???? line, the shampoo and conditioner made my hair feel squeaky and dry and the leave-in spray dried my hair out too. I bought two and I gave one to my auntie (who is natural too whoop whoop) and she thought something was wrong with her hair. I asked her if it was dry after using the Carol's Daughter leave-in and after some investigation, it was the cause of both of our dryness. however, I did the love oil spray even though it's something you can make at home.

Well said!! As an "old schooler" w/natural hair I agree 110%. I've never fell for any of the natural hair care products UNTIL a few weeks ago. I was simply browsing the hair care products and If I didn't stand there at least 20mins plus trying to make an informative decision...weighing MANUFACTURE, INGREDIENTS, BENEFITS & most of all PRICE. It is totally RIDICULOUS how OVERWHELMING the choices & pricey most items are.

OMG, YAAASSS, PREACH and let the church say "AAAMEN" !!! I feel the exact same way, I cannot with these natural hair product prices. I want to try Camille Rose so bad but the price is absolutely ridiculous. It's funny how when I was little, my mom was used cheap regular ole' hair products (containing sulfates, cones, petroleum and all) on my natural hair, that was when it was at it's best...thick, long and healthy. She didn't use moisturizers and she greased my hair and scalp regularly. She did everything "you're not supposed to" do but my hair was in excellent condition.

They are trying to replace the money they are losing from the weaves and relaxers. But Andre Walker has a no sulfate shampoo but on one of the YT reviews she said it has sodium hydroxide in it. That is the permanent relaxer. We just have to read the labels and go with what works for our hair. The marketing is getting out of hand. But if you notice the white hair products are cheap quality products.

  • @DivaWuan
    @DivaWuan 8 років тому +12

Glad somebody else mention this. As a person with both a background in Marketing and chemistry I've been mentioning this for years. Sort of bittersweet. Positive you finally got companies recognizing naturals as majority instead of minority. What use be products on small separate aisle is now being merge right next to other hair care products. Supply and Demand has cause companies like Shea Moisture go from four lines of products to over 35 lines of products within a mere five years! Bad news is you have companies who slap a natural tag on their products but is only filled with ingredients that are worth no more than the same ingredients you can find in a five dollar product. Exp. Carol's Daughter that initially started out as authentic natural brand with reasonable prices for the ingredients quickly became drastically overprice with added filler ingredients that was not nowhere near worth the inflated cause. This cause former owner Lisa Price go into bankruptcy, eventually selling the company to L'Oreal. In my years of going through dozens of brands the top two I can honestly say is worth their price for the quality is Shea Moisture/Nubian Heritage and Jane Carter.

Thanks for this vid.

I JUST got finished watching yet another video in which a woman complained about how "hard" and "expensive" natural hair care is. Once the natural hair "movement" really got going, the black hair care industry took a major hit...but on some level they knew that a lot of black women STILL have these beliefs around so-called "black" hair -- specifically, that it's hard and requires a lot of expensive upkeep -- and as a result here they are with their 50-11 products in 60-11 different product lines. The truth is that natural hair care is as hard or expensive as you make it.

    - completely raw castor oil that you can't get in these beauty supply stores
    - Aphrogee leave in conditioner
    - Tresemme Conditioner
    - Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother

It is very easy to get caught up in buying new products (or styling tools) because we live in a society that says we can use money to fix anything. It is very frustrating because, as you said, we don't need much and almost all the products do the same basic function. What worked for me was unfollowing a lot of people on social media who sponsor products. I didn't feel as tempted to compare their results to mine or to compare their products to the ones I was using.

Totally agree with every word you said! I started my natural hair journey in 2012. I was watching UA-camrs to learn what products to use. I quickly learned that all the money I was spending based on their "glowing" reviews was not what they were necessarily purchasing!!! The product companies were sending them free stuff to review. I know that some would give "honest" reviews, but they still were not purchasing all those products behind them on their shelves!! It was then I decided to do EXACTLY what you mentioned...I figured out what shampoo, conditioner and oil my hair liked and stuck to them. The results were amazing!!! Not that long ago our complaint was that we were ignored by theses companies, now we mad cause they giving us too many choices. I like having the choices and I'm glad they keep coming out with new stuff because different products works for different people. A product that works great for you, may not work at all for me. That happens all the time. Yeah the companies are capitalizing on the natural hair community, but that's the nature of this country. You always have a choice to play the game or not. I decided when I first went natural that I had a price limit and I stick to it pretty much. But I don't feel like I waste my money, because if I don't like it, I TAKE IT BACK. It took me forever to find my holy grail products and some of them haven't been on the market that long, so I'm glad the companies keep giving me choices.

I have been going back into old youtube videos and finding more natural ways to do my own products since my hair doesn't react well to shelf products. I find that spending the 3-4 dollars and making my own gel, works better for me than buying that big container of EcoStyler. I also find that using too much product causes waste. So this time around going natural again, I am taking a lighter approach. I don't buy things on the shelves so much because I still have product from the last time I went natural.

I went through my product Junkie phase for like 6 months and realized it was a waste. I found a few good natural product that I buy on sale. As far as the coconut oil it is worth it to buy a big $30.00 jar if your use of it is multipurpose. I use coconut oil on my entire body twice a day as well as my hair. I go through a 28 oz jar of coconut oil in about 1 month. So for me buying a big jar is an investment.
I also learned to not stock up too much on natural hair products because eventually all that product will go bad. I keep 2 shampoos, 2 deep conditioners, 2 conditionser, 2 leave ins, and 2 stylers on hand and don't buy anymore until they all run out.

This is exactly what is said when the natural hair movement started. A lot of the products are made by the same relaxer companies that people bash. Cantu makes Dr. Miracle's relaxers. Dark and lovely. Creme of Nature. The list goes on. People love As I Am but the bottles are sooo tiny to me. My most expensive product is $10. No special cowashes. No special curl creams, No gels. Just shampoo, conditioner, leave in, and deep conditioner to treat my hair since i want it to grow faster. I do have oils but even those are under $10.

Honestly they just put natural and people go crazy. There is no need for "natural" products except for styling products. My hair was natural before it became a movement in some countries and I was using shampoos conditioner from those companies, Shea Butter for styling and my hair was fine and the products cheap.

Love your channel because you are 100 when it comes to the truth. I was a product junkie the first time and I backslid. I had so much product the first time, I was able to keep my family supplied for about a couple years and still had product to start the second round of natural. This time I am creating my own products because these companies will make sure you go broke. plus most of these products don't work for me. Keep up the good work.

Thank you! We need more videos like this. I've been thinking about this more lately. Like, why did people stop cowashing with cheap V05, and start cowashing with $20 products? Lol Too many people on UA-cam hyping products more than the techniques for healthier and hair.

This video is so true and I love that you said this because there are people spending bill money and grocery money on hair products just because someone with ankle length hair used it and they think they'll wake up and their hair will be the same length and texture. Using extracted banana peel oil and little palm size jars for heads full of hair saying "It's small and expensive but it's worth it!" But when you use it your dries up and breaks off and you're back to square one..... smh.

***** people in the NHC rarely opt for cantus products, African pride , beautifully textures. They just buy Shea moisture, kinky curly.. And everything fancy lol

+Elizabeth Lizzy African Pride Shea Butter Miracle is one of my staples. You get a lot for cheap and most of the ingredients are oils and butters right at the beginning of the ingredient lists too. I'd be broke if I tried to buy all those expensive products.

Kinky Kurly Knot today dries the heck out of my hair. The folks on UA-cam almost never use it straight. They always add other products with it.Thats why I side-eye reviewers(except for a few like Melshary) Don't even get me started on hair vitamins.Tried a few now I have a dermatologist bill due to cystic acne. Fact is less is more and a healthy diet is all you need...and PATIENCE.

+Izumi Brooks yea but most of their products have parabens, silicones and artificial oils(mineral oil)😖which causes build up on your scalp. That stunts hair growth and these ingredients can only be removes by harsh cleansers like sulfates which dries your hair out, it's a bad cycle that can cause hair damage and keep your hair from growing past a certain length. That's why people are buying more organic ingredients which are harder to grow meaning they cost more money to maintain. If your product is expensive and DOESN'T have non-gmo and/or organic in them then DON'T buy it(boycott them by writing bad reviews, ask the company to change the formula and pricing).

I stopped watching a lot of naturals, not only because they started to become commercials...It was due to darn near each and every product they put on their head was "amazing". I've noticed how over the past few years products that use to be under $4, are now 2-3x's more. The pricing for Mixed Chicks, Miss Jessi's, etc😱 it is not that serious! Miss Jessi's and Camille Rose's gels are close to or over $20 where I am! But, it basically is EcoStyler gel🤔 Creme of Nature, and a lot of these other companies that didn't give 2 craps about anything but relaxers have now "converted" to natural lines. I have read the back vs what's in bold on the front of the bottle...the argan oil will be ingredient 10 or further down the list and that's how they get you. Just like you said, the companies pay attention to what the buzz words and phrases are...yet, put just enough for them to be able to get away with their bs advertising.

I love this video as it is some real truth. Why in the world would the natural hair community continue to give free advertisement to these companies. You said, shampoo, conditioner water and oil that is all we need to get natural hair to grow. It was all our parents used to get our natural hair to grow when we were young. I understand like you say the need for some gel or cream for smoothing and styling. Furthermore, I notice this problem of buying more for less is not just limited to natural hair products. It is the same for household products, dish washing liquid, washing powder, cosmetics, and wow men razors!!! Heck when you buy a bag of Lays or Ruffles potato chips or any chips you are buying air with crumbs.
The truth of the matter is that many natural hair viewers believe products are responsible for hair growth and health and are being suckered. Also many of the reviewers say in their videos the products was sent to them and not personally purchased and is allowing themselves to be raped of advertising and commission fees for free products. I can assure you those same companies aren't going to ask the rich to sponsor their products for free, nope they pay them thousands of dollars. Also, there are many you-tubers who sponsors pay them to advertise, sadly it is not the you-tubers who create video content geared towards African Americans. It is my hope that those who create video content for natural hair and make up tutorials for the darker roses wake up and become business minded and demand to be paid if not create video content without showing their product. If they want you to sponsor it make them pay. They are a billion dollar industry. Love the truth.
