MMA Experts Breakdown Hajime No Ippo • How Realistic is Hajime No Ippo?

- Hajime no Ippo seems to be one of the most realistic sports and boxing anime out there, yet how realistic is it really? I am joined by two MMA experts to breakdown an episode of Hajime no Ippo where he fights Mashiba Ryo and also to check how realistic is Ippo's training before the boxing fight.
I am joined by Ricky Davison, head MMA coach of SBG Portland and also Vanessa Mariscal a former professional MMA fighter, now MMA and fitness coach.

Hajime no Ippo has been my personal inspiration for years. It inspired me to become involved into competitive sports and was a great introduction and inspiration for me to learn about boxing. It's also such a great tool of inspiration for learning about the importance of hard training and the mental aspect of boxing and fighting. Yet watching the anime I was always wondering - so how realistic is Hajime no Ippo? Where is the line drawn where the realistic side of it ends? Yet I knew I would not be able to answer this question without professional boxers or fighters together with me. Finally I've got my chance.
Also note, that this fight of Ippo vs Mashiba is one of the more realistic ones. Such fights as Tamura vs Hawk are probably pushing the barriers of realism quite a bit more. But how much? I think we will just have to make another Hajime no Ippo breakdown video ;)
What do you think about Hajime no Ippo? How realistic do you think Hajime no Ippo is? Let me know in the comments.

I do know that :) I actually said that at the end of the video, but cut it out in editing to not make the video too long. Thanks for sharing though!
It's also based on the really old boxing and coaching styles. Even in the show they acknowledge some of what they are doing is outdated.

Next time please have Real Boxer/ Coaches not MMA Fighters or Coaches. They suck in Boxing setting of sparring they cant see the punches from the angles.
You have to run in order for the legs to be Conditioned then what follows is the jump rope for Coordination, Balance and Timing. Then ShadowBoxing with darth in and out, lateral side to side, and the triangle footwork Simultainiously from the Stance. Most MMA fighters doesnt know the Fundamentals of Boxing, they think that they could just jump in like with their Flatfooted stance with their feet. When you ask them to wear a pair of shoes, the mannerism and their habits is still there.
Boxing coaches will be Brutally honest and will instill fear if you cant adapt and adjust.
Cus D'Amato, Teddy Atlas, Mayweather Sr., Freddie Roach, Ann Wolfe, The late great Emanuel Steward.
Please watch them how the Coach and Train a Boxer you will see how Honest they are.
Wtf???? That is a guard, one arm lower is called the Philly shell and lots of fighters have used it... also the flicker jab was a real thing used by Thomas Hearns. Maybe Boxing coaches should see this, not MMA coaches. Boxing for Boxing is way different than boxing in mma
Edit: Holy likes! Thanks guys!
That's what i was wondering
I agree one thousand present
I said the same thing when I saw the title of the vid
Lol they missed out some history but the defense wasn't disregarded as false, and neither was flicker jab and they rated the realism high sooooooooo what's the issue? Everyone so salty for the sake of it or is this just an e-peen contest cos you never got to be in the video? lol
Well said Vegito. Finally somebody that knows his shit. To break down this anime like this sucks the life out of a good anime series. It has a good story with good action and I think it addresses alot of psychological parts from each character. You got ppl from all walks of life that are real and up front and you've got ppl who is going to pump you up so it's an excellent blend. Excellent anime all the way through.
Ippo’s style was based on Mike Tyson and Jack Dempsey.
And Mashiba aka Flicker Jab guy was was based on Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns.
Yes but Ippo isn't a defensive-pressure counter-puncher like Tyson.
Ippo and Sendo are based off Joe Yabuki from Ashita No Joe
Intenxsify in what way? Like I under stand why youthink Sendo has some similarities with Joe but Ippos fighting style is way different and Ippo personality is not like joe
@@xaegius5349 Not fighting style wise but both can brawl as shown in Sendo vs Ippo. Ippo almost has Joe's face, wears the Joe jacket with a red shirt in the episode when Ippo was depressed. Ippo beat Woli (like a tarzan jungle boxer). Same with Joe beating Harimau. Ippo and Sendo are like two halves of Joe. Fighting style wise I agree both Ippo and Joe are different. Since Yabuki is a brawling counter puncher and Ippo is a peekaboo style skilled infighter.
@@xaegius5349 Sendo has Joe's agressive behavior from season 1. Sendo hangs around the kids in his area like Joe hanging out with the kids in his area. Even the kids themselves look similar. Ippo is more like Joe's depressed side and more calm side of Joe. The author of Hajime is a fan of Ashita and Chiba Tetsuya. One thing both Sendo and Ippo have in common with Joe is extremely good punching power besides them being Japanese with similar looks.
Next: Soccer Experts Breakdown Slam Dunk XD
THANK YOU! I was about to point this out myself XD
Wait what who are these guys again?😂
UFC incorporates boxing but Soccer does not incorporate basketball. Your logic is flawes
Not really, this MMA experts keep bringing up constantly how things would work in MMA training and fighting, they outright ignore that they're watching a boxing anime, this is basically saying "both sports are about fighting so they're the same" so saying "soccer and basketball are both about balls so they're the same" isn't that different as an example.
@@dariusgibson3368 sir I disagree

@Oyet Cortez Palmes MMA and boxing are different, but you can't just say that they can't do a breakdown of ippo. They're Mixed martial artist, so it's safe to assume that they do know and practice boxing

One more thing, these pros keep comparing mashiba to Floyd, when they have the Actual hitman mashiba his based on... tommy hearns 😩😂😂😂 next time get boxers not MMA 😩😂

The stance is pretty similar. The way floyd and hitman uses it is what makes it offensive or defensive.

Rayyan Frem yeah the man who created this manga knew a ton about boxing
@Benjamian Hausmann Look, I hate sjws but your comment made no sense, she's here to commentate not to fucking fight... Slow down your women hate there buddy, if they asked her to fight the rest of the men you might have a point but even women fighters can commentate...
@Benjamian Hausmann First of all none of them are good enough because they are mma experts not boxing experts there's a huge difference, she may not be qualified for this, but she's not any less qualified than the rest of the people, because she's still an mma expert.
Short summary, she's not any less qualified to talk about it than the rest of the people, but they're all not qualified for it.
MMA coaches are good but the opinion of a pro boxing coach would obviously be interesting too mainly due to the boxing theme.

The negativity that the coaches were talking about is a culture clash. Being Asian myself negativity is used to make a positive outcome. That is all
Also they don't understand that takamura is a absoulte asshole , who would and has laughed in the faces of his friends when they lose
@@quickie17 Also, Takamura isn't the coach of Ippo. Takamura intervenes occasionally to tell Ippo about his shortcomings, which isn't exactly a good way of teaching like they said. The coach actually does work techniques into his training without actually telling him. Ippo actually realises this when he himself becomes a second.
@@ethan2163 I never said he was his coach or ever was I said he's a asshole that would likely cheer the opponent to laugh at his friends
@@quickie17 I know but it was more in relation to what they said.
@@Critical_0 I know that there are cultural differences in coaching methods. Takamura's case is kind of lopsided. His role in the story isn't as a mentor but a senior to ippo. He only imparts little nuggets of wisdom onto Ippo because he feels he has a duty to help him improve on his shortcomings. He also isn't really helpful at times. In the more recent chapters, he flat out discourages Ippo from returning to boxing and there's an obvious level of detachment you can see in him. Overall, I'd say it was unfair to judge the show based on a single scene with no context like the video did and not into account other perspectives.
Now I wanna see how they'd react to Megalobox....too soon?
I'm a fan of Hajime no Ippo and Megalobox, but I feel that Megalobox is more like a drama anime in with a sports backdrop than actual fighting
series like Hajime no Ippo and Holyland.
@@dropkickcorpse My thoughts exactly. Megalobox focused on the story and left the fight kinda lack luster. They focused on the machines the fighters used but didnt utilize it in the fights. It was kinda overly glorified though I did enjoy the show. I just feel the main character could have showed off some cool technique to beat out the fighters that rely on their gear too much.
@@KIDhazama "Cool technique"? He was a superior boxer to all the other boxers and their rigs combined!
He was so good without equipment, the Champ ditched his own rig just to prove that he was a better boxer and not the rig itself.
All said, the fight choreography or camera work did need some more polish.
@@T3HR3PP4 That's exactly what I meant. No technique was used in how they really struck at each other. It was alot of hooks, uppercuts, and jabs but there is more to boxing than those three basic elements.
@@KIDhazama part of what makes me want to see them react to that is the fun that can come from seeing these coaches try and apply their knowledge on cracking the holes that pop up in the concept of machine augmented combatants. I mean how cool would that be!? I also concede that it could go in the way of "this is just too B.S." to logically try see how they'd develop strategies in the context of the show~
Fun fact, the guy who made Hajime no Ippo has a boxing gym himself which makes sense why the anime is fairly realistic when it comes to fundamental boxing.
Ippo is one of the best, realistic martial arts anime. Kenichi is fun but the power level is all over the place and it's really about showcasing the values, theories and ideals of traditional martial arts in an exaggerated fashion, which is good fun. Baki is about over the top violence and manliness and often about the contrast between real fighting and martial arts.
A surprisingly good one that's running right now is Hinomaru Sumo/Hinomaru Zumou. It's a typical shonen martial arts sports anime about Sumo, and it's really quite realistic as well. They also have an MMA guy and Karate guy that adapts their skills to their Sumo game in the main team, in a way that I think is fairly realistic. I started it because I am a martial arts nerd but I really did not expect that out of a Sumo anime.
That sounds really interesting! Thanks for letting me know
Like I swear when Kenichi learns 1 new move and fights the villain which there are more experienced actually loses because of that one move I swear it’s The villains are bad at fighting like they have been fighting longer than kenichi and in tho ova one of the villain does capoeira but there no capoeira in it like what I like about Hajime No Ippo theres technical explanations and they are being smart when fighting and they think how to win during the fight
Have you read Kenji though? And karate shoukoshi?
Karate Shoukoshi is SO good! Definitely a must read sports manga.
I love hinomaru sumo and baki. Also kengan ashura. Baki characters are like mortal kombat characters. In baki there is a guy that hunted dinosaurs for christ sakes.
For an anime, Hajime No Ippo is incredibly realistic. I would love to see what these coaches think of the depiction of the Dempsey Roll.
But you can really tell the love and care for the sport that the creator put into this story
Idk understand why the Mma experts didn’t explain anything, the form is the philly shell, then ippo practices the Dempsey roll. It’s nothing new, these things have been here for a long time, the whole show is very accurate for the most part.
Those Flicker Jabs were done by Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns.

5: Context was provided enough. They aren't reviewing the damn thing, they are only talking about the aspects of the martial art. Training, coaching and of course, the actual combat.

Two mma coaches tell you how little they know about boxing. Rally weird to see two mma coaches who don't know what a Philly shell and flicker jab are. They're only two of the most iconic staples of some of the greatest fighters of all time. This is why I get worried when I see a mma guy go into boxing. Their knowledge of the sweet science is so limited most of the times it's sending a lamb to the slaughter. And vice versa for the boxer going to mma.

MMA? Mix Martial Arts? Reacting to a single martial arts anime, that being of boxing? Ok.
Mashiba's style is supposed to be based off of Thomas Hearns. Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns often would drop his left hand to deliver his flicking jabs; watch Hager vs. Hearns and you'll see that Hearns drops his left constantly.
You didnt provide much context at all either, In that fight Ipoo is a beginner fighting in the rookie tournament, and he doesn’t quite understand how boxing works yet, so they’re not as much trying to scare him as much as filling him in on fundamentals. Also the styles of most fighters in the show are exaggerated versions of real life fighters, that particular opponent is based on Thomas “the hitman” Hearns
Mashiba swings his arm to create rhythm and then breaks that rhythm to attack, this way it's harder to know when the punch is coming.
React to Baki the Grappler
Oh oh oh oh boi
What’s there to breakdown? It’s mostly bullshit
Jihadi John it’s somewhat realistic
CatSenju which reality are you living in?
Jihadi John well, obviously the later characters are unrealistic, but the earlier characters like Gaia and Shinogi are pretty damn realistic
The flicker is done by building up momentum (by moving your arm back and fourth) and then 'flicking' out a jab. Or something along those lines.
Wow it is nice to see insight from folks who really know their thing. Surprising and nice to see actual thought and insight in this reaction.
I agree!
I know I'm like four years late to this, but Mashiba is, like others have said, based on Tommy Hearns, and the back-and-forth swinging of his hand in preparation for his flicker seems to be based specifically on the second fight between Hearns and Leonard. Of course, Hearns's motions are less rhythmic and much faster; they're feints more than anything, but at times he does swing his hand back and forth a few times before throwing out the jab from below.
Do the trainings too, the kinds of training, if it is accurate or not for emprove your boxer.
I loved the concepte. I totally watch more of these.
Keep the good work
Theyre 100% right about the coaching but in the sense of writing for the show its to add dramatics to give the protag something to overcome imo
It's also worth mentioning that the story originally is a Manga. It can be hard to translate that to animation, especially when fine details are concerned. The creator of the Manga, being a boxing coach himself, probably imagined more realistic movement in his head more than the animation studio was able to show in the animated series, though I imagine they would've consulted the creator and/or experts to get it mostly right.
I think you should use the Japanese audie with subs. Because sometimes lines are changed when its dubbed, and its not always the best
I agree
You pick the wrong match scene.
That will lead him to judge anything in the anime fight series can't be represent in a real fight!
You must choose fighting between
SENDO VS VORG instead! or
IPPO vs VORG, EIJI DATE vs RICARDO
Mashiba's Flicker Jab was inspired off of Thomas Hearns, who also swung his arm back and forth like the character does.
As someone who has read the entire thing up to the current chapter (1245ish, updates are strange) as well as watched the anime, I can assure you there are more than several instances where this series breaks through the realm of what is possible lol. That being said it's still extremely feasible to enjoy the series and I greatly encourage anyone who is interested in it to go ahead and start. It's one of the best comedy series ever made as well as one of the best action series.
It might sound silly but the scene where takamura asked ippo to catch 10 leaves helped me perfect my jab , ippo realised that he needs to relax his arm and throw it like a whip until he made contact with the leaf then he hardens his fist by colising it, i did the same and the result is a powerful and fast jab of course you need to apply all the fundametals of a jab like the alignement of the fist elbow and shoulder and the slight hip rotation and weight shift but the relaxing then hardening bit make it even more destructive for me
I usually never comment, but this was great. You deserve more views, man. Greetings from Mexico

Very good video. First time I watch this channel anyway.
If you're comparing this serie with reality, would you be so kind to ask about two techniques that appears later in this anime? I mean, if those techniques exist or they are "reliable to do".
Those techniques should be:
Ippo's Dempsey Roll, and Volg's White Fang.
Also, you should talk about Takamura's diet before a fight. That's a really hard point of describe it.
Regards from Chile!
Thanks, great questions!
One that's really interesting, and I'd like to hear the input of real fighters/trainers is the Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru (Minoru Kohinata, The Little Prince of Karate)... It only exists as a manga (no anime), but it's one that was completed a long time ago, though English translations are only now nearing the end of the series (total 500 chapters). The sequel manga, which is just called "Karate Shoukoushi Monogatari" (The Tale of the Little Prince of Karate), hasn't been translated yet, AFAIK.
The reason I ask is because that one's very much specifically about MMA, and portrays itself as pretty realistic. A number of the characters are based on real fighters as well (e.g. Samart Payakaroon, Saenchai Sor. Kingstar, Jean-Charles Skarbowsky)... There are some things that, like any manga/anime are a little unrealistic -- for instance, the main character, because he was originally a gymnast, uses a lot of high-flying kicks and doumawashi and so on -- but even as the series goes on, he grows out of it and starts using normal punches and kicks and shows a tiny bit of development on grappling. Even when it gets unrealistic, it's not unrealistic in the sense of "that's defying the laws of physics"; it's unrealistic in the sense that "that would practically never work in real life."
The series also has its fun little easter eggs. Every now and then you'll see another anime character make an appearance... Sailor Venus in a crowd, Vegeta in the gym, Jet Black in an audience, one fighter who apparently looked like Kazuma Kuwabara in his youth... also terminology from Ken'ichi and Naruto will make its way into the story, but they try to apply it to something real.
Can you have boxing coaches next?

The rocking movement of his arm was a thing tomas hearns did to distract his opponent ippos opponents style is almost a carbine copy of hearns
It hurts when he said "cartoon"
Also; most of the communication issues they find, they’re all translation problems. Some things just don’t translate from Japanese to English well, and dubbers just make it easier to understand in English but a lot of times it ends up being mistranslated
It was really interesting seeing some experienced coaches review the show, but with all due respect, all the laughing about "negative comments" of the main protagonist coach and friends is just silly. There are more than one way of doing things. If your style as mma coaches is to be uplifting and positive all day, that's just great. Whatever works for you and it sure incourages larger numbers of athletes, fighters to sticm around in the gym since their fears and feelings are being babysit in such detail.
There are different schools pf coaching and what you call "negative energy" works just fine and has worked for millions of fighters along the centuries, from Japanese fighters in karate to Muay Thai fighters, Russian boxers etc. Do you think Buakaw Por Pramuk's coach didn't use "negative energy and comments"? Do you think Saenchai's coach had nothing but "positive energy"? Heck, Muay Thai fighters, nationals or foreign are down right abused and bullied in some Thai gyms and for quite a few it gets the results. It's not an approach for anyone. It's an approach that makes you aware of your shortcomings while giving you a solution to them and forging your character and fears along the way. You get warned, you might get scared and if you do, the solution you work on is going to make that fear useful. Cus D'Amato by the way employed the same type of "negative energy" tactics you all laugh about and hey, he only produced numerous champions and one of the most if not the most iconic boxers of all time, Mike Tyson who is actually the boxer who inspired the creator of this cartoon/anime to base the main character on.
So, in short: just because your personal coaching style is comfortable to you and your students and it is uplifting all the time and filled with "positive energy", doesn't mean other styles of coaching are to be laughed at and don't work.
Just my 2 cents.
9:35 usually Ippo does a lot of speed changes during his roadwork though. Like normal running, then a sudden dash/sprint for a short distance and then going back to running/jogging. Btw if you only know the Anime I highly recommend the Manga to you (its still ongoing). Its far further down the story than the anime and the drawing style also developed through the years

Hajime no Ippo or something else?
@@MartialArtsJourney like an martial arts anime vs reality series
Alright, so a few things here:
4:12 That's a Philly Shell. And Flicker Jabs are low power, quick jabs meant to keep your opponent at range and dig for openings. It works wonders with a Philly Shell or something similar. It looks almost like Floyd Mayweather's stance because Mayweather uses the Philly Shell.
Also, the targets are exposed, yes, but the Philly Shell is often used as an effective outfighting stance where the chin is protected by shoulder rolls and you use flicker jabs and movement to keep the opponent far enough from you to suffer from body shots.
A flicker jab is also not supposed to be whipped out in such an exaggerated manner as seen in the Anime. Floyd Mayweather primarily uses flicker jabs.
10:14 Changing angles that low and dashing in does work in boxing better than it does in MMA. However, if used sparingly, it works just fine in MMA as well. Just look at Anderson Silva dodging strikes with his deep, low ducks. Also, this is the exact way in which many grappling oriented MMA fighters counter punches by going for the double/single leg takedown.
14:54 That's called an Elbow Catch. It is often looked upon as a dishonourable technique in boxing since it destroys the opponent's fist if they threw a punch hard enough and if you can manage to catch it. It is, however, a completely legal move.
It is just as difficult to do in boxing as it is in MMA. Most schools just don't teach or train this for safety reasons. You can use it for upper body defense even in MMA, against punches, or even kicks, although it does have its own set of advantages and disadvantages. It's more like leg checking kicks. It is a difficult skill to master in any case. But it is a thing because people have done it in the past.
Yeah, something I love about Hajime no Ippo is that it's mostly realistic, while the unrealistic parts have tangible reasons: they're all there to improve the viewing experience. The visual flair, the internal monologue, even people hyping up Mashiba and psyching Ippo out are there for dramatic tension.
man Ricky's blinking is contageous
This video was really cool. Glad it was recommended to me
Thanks!
I got *so* triggered when he called Hajime no Ippo a "cartoon"
No. Not really. Anime *is* Cartoon.
I really wish there was an MMA anime, sad to see none.
Yeah... Doesn't look like it unfortunately. Would be awesome
Baki the grappler :)
Let's see Baki
Read a manga called Tough
I know a couple of MMA manga Teppu and All Rounder Meguru.
Would have been a really cool video if boxers reviewed the show.
From the ippo sub here great video !
Thank you!! I'm glad you made it here
For people complaining about MMA fighters analyzing a boxing anime:
It's called Mixed Martial Arts. Mixed. Mix. As in they add boxing techniques to the mix.
Review Ashita No Joe
It's a shame how only season 1 was dubbed. Hajime no Ippo definitely deserved more
Love this! Please more. Make sure to like this video guys.
Thank you! I am already looking into doing Baki The Grappler and Kenichi!

Can you watch takamura vs hawk
I have it on my list of plan :)
People say boxing and mma are much different. When in fact that many mma fighters train in their boxing and even mma gyms hire boxing coaches for their fighters.
If Holyland had an Anime, I’d be recommending that. I think maybe there’s a live action drama you could show them instead? Dunno how faithful it is to the manga, though.
Alternatively... maybe Megalo Box? :p
God i wish holyland had an anime :/
The guard the guy who uses the "flick jab" is called the Philly shell or crab style. like someone said below make no sense to have MMA experts who might have a limited boxing background. You can tell they have no idea about box just from say "oh that's the guard Mayweather uses".
The Origin Story
Oddly enough we can thank EA Sports Fight Night for essentially coining the term ‘The Philly Shell.” It is a variation on one of the most basic and oldest guards in boxing called the ‘Crab Style’ where the boxer essentially folds their arms bent at the elbows in front of their head/face to block and deflect punches. There really is no single creator of anything in boxing so to speak but it was the great Tommy Ryan who laid the foundation by understanding the importance of the ‘center-line. ‘Born in Redwood New York on March 31, 1870. Notoriously brutal on sparring partners he was World Welterweight and World Middleweight champion. He had 109 fights, 90 wins (70 by KO), only 6 losses and 11 draws. theunderdogsports.com/philly-shell-theory-technique/
The flicker jab
Hearns would flick his jab and circle to the inside like his hero Ali, pestering his adversary and taking a superior inside angle.

You ask mma "experts" to analyze boxing... Enough said
Thumbs down for the witch throwing up devil horns in the corner.
Fun fact about hijame no ippo is the creator of the manga was a real boxing instructor

Did you know ?
Ufc fighter Korean Zombie started fighting thanks to hajime no ippo.
WBC Bantamweight ChampionNaoya Inoue too.
Yawara inokuma . It’s an anime about judo
if you saw the whole series you will know that he uses good bases of boxing, I see it difficult that they try to understand in a single chapter because they talk about pugilistic dementia, injuries, the capacity of the body, etc.
Theres a video on youtube comparing the real life techniques used by by real boxers. Just search it.
Edit: look for The real boxing techniques of hajime no ippo explained by the channel, The modern martial artist.
It's a great video
its from hitman hearn ( a boxer in the 80's) who invented the style basically and it is modeled after how hearns actually fought.....
