    Only just found this today and love what you are doing!!! Thank you for taking care of our soldiers! You and any others providing little creature comforts from home are heroes to me and I appreciate people like you, that do things that I can't.

    Another great way to turn them right side out if you don't have a long pipe or stick... Lay a long piece of ribbon or yarn down the right side of the fabric (about an inch longer than the scarf)
    Fold your fabric wrong side out (ribbon is now inside) sew over 1 end of the ribbon.. Like the end of the scarf, the 1st end you sew shut, now as you sew down the scarf, make sure you aren't sewing over the ribbon.. When you finish, all you have to do is pull on the ribbon (that isn't sewn) & itll turn right side out! Then just cut the ribbon off

    I wish I had thought of that turn through so long ago. I put a length of blind cord secured at the start and that helps me turn through.

    I made these using your tutorial for my grandsons teachers as an end of the school year thank you and they were thrilled to receive them!
    Can they be warmed in the microwave as well?
    I thought it would be a nice Christmas gift as well if so.

    • @BobDaHam
      @BobDaHam  7 років тому

      I would suggest checking with the company that makes whatever water absorbent crystals you elect to buy, they should be able to direct you to whether or not their products are microwave safe. We never tried with the Watersorb crystals. Given that the scarf has to be wet for the crystals to plump, you're going to get a cooling effect from evaporation, even if warm, so this may not be the best option for warming.

    How long do these scarves stay cool before they must be regenerated? We have our Relay for Life in August, and it is always just brutal for several evening hours. These might save someone from passing out from the heat! Thank you for serving those who serve!

    • @BobDaHam
      @BobDaHam  10 років тому +1

      Fran - a lot of that depends on your environment. I wore one if Afghanistan and it would keep me cool for a few hours before it warmed up some. It never dried out completely, but it lost some of its effectiveness. A quick dip in cool water resolved that issue easily, so it should work well for you.

    What is the diameter of the PVC pipe?

  • @ashlie9064
    @ashlie9064 10 років тому

    I noticed that the water beads are sold by 2lbs 4lbs etc. How many scarves will 2 lbs make? I saw where you said to just use 1/4 of a teaspoon per segment.So one teaspoon per scarf sounds like 2lbs would make a lot of scarves.

    • @ALAunit179
      @ALAunit179 10 років тому

      According to the Watersorb website, each pound of medium crystals contains about 115 teaspoons. With the inevitable spillage, that should make about 100 scarves.

    Excellent video thank you. I have a few questions about making the scarf 🧣 how much does it cost to make a scarf? How long does it take to make one scarf, and how much would you sell them for? I’ve been researching to make them and sell them for a side gig. 🙏

    Do you have a instruction sheet that shows the size of the PVC pipe?

    • @BobDaHam
      @BobDaHam  9 років тому +1

      +Rebecca Scott Length wise - it should be as long as your scarf is, plus a few inches. Diameter - whatever will fit inside the scarf. Something on the order of 1.5-2 inches will probably work great.

    Just curious, but would bathing suit fabric be good to use?

    • @BobDaHam
      @BobDaHam  6 років тому +1

      It wouldn't be approved for military use as it's a synthetic material and could melt, but there's no reason you couldn't do it for personal use as long as the material can be properly stitched.

    Why can't you freeze these? Soak in water then put in freezer?

    • @lisacorbin4477
      @lisacorbin4477 4 роки тому +1

      When water freezes, it expands. so if the beads are full of water, then they freeze, the expansion of the water will cause the beads to actually burst open. the goo will freeze solid and when you attempt to use it: 1) it won't be pliable to tie around the neck and 2) the goo, which is no longer contained inside the beads, will ooze thru the fabric and the tie will not be useful.

    Could you please post an address so we at home can make these to send directly to our troops? Thank you!

    • @BobDaHam
      @BobDaHam  5 років тому +1

      There isn't a general address to send stuff to. You can go on the Any Soldier website - anysoldier.com/index.cfm and see if you find a service member looking for support. There are other similar websites that offer that type of support, connecting deployed military with supportive folks back home.

    how long are they

    • @BobDaHam
      @BobDaHam  7 років тому +1

      It depends on the fabric you purchase. 42-44" wide is what's recommended in the video. It has to be long enough to comfortably tie around the neck.

    thanks very much! Next time, please flip your camera 90 degrees to get a "landscape" view rather than letterboxed "portrait". Also, you can use hydrogel crystals that are sold as plant-watering products at garden centers, such as Water Keep, Miracle Gro Water-storing Crystals etc With these you can get smaller quantities than 2 lb for much less money - (12 oz for $9) which is more economical if you're just making a few of these. If you're making a lot of them, go with Watersorb.
