Overwatch was one of my favourite games of all time. Played in the beta, and never stopped. Ever since Blizzard took it from me (which I did not know was coming! Man, that hurt) I have been looking for a replacement game. I've tried 'em all (except OW2. I will not forgive Blizzard). Didn't gel with any of them. Marvel Rivals I had no hopes for, but since it's free, gave it a try. The Overwatch void has been filled. I have a new favourite game.
At first I did not like that the game was based on the Marvel IP but the longer I played I stopped caring about it as much. Now I'm actually grateful for that because the IP attracts a lot of players that wouldn't give it a try otherwise. Also the timing of Overwatch's 6v6 playtest couldn't have been worse. I gave it a try but couldn't help but come back to Rivals after few games.
The monetization feels very fair right now. This could change of course, but it is the right start to capture market share. I have dabbled in Gacha games and the worst thing those games can do is give me pop ups of offers that smell like BS. It is like they are telling me they only want the Whales please instead of offering deals that feel like a value proposition.
Not into hero shooters but you're pretty much on point with general sentiment towards blizzard. There's a huge difference between keeping your players happy and trying to strip out their money.

Hope you have a good holiday Mugthief, your commentary has always been appreciated and agreed with in my eyes, I leave a like every time you say welcome back. I used to breathe Overwatch night and day and when Overwatch 2 was announced I never logged in and never looked back cause I knew it would never capture that magic again. Marvel Rivals is a game I have resisted playing solely because I know that game will consume me if I play it since it has all the exciting things I wish Overwatch did. Blizzard just makes me sad, I used to look forward to blizzcon and now? I ain’t spending that money to be disappointed in real time. I will always remember being there when Diablo immortal was announced and that was the last time I ever went to blizzcon lmao
The term hero shooter was created by Gearbox for Battleborn which is a hero shooter just like the others revealed July 8, 2014 before overwatch November 7, 2014. BTW I am pretty sure Star Wars Battlefront 2 is really the first all the back in 2005 as it had playable hero characters in Luke, Han solo, the emperor etc from the movies with special abilities. If you less strict you can take it back even further.
Not hard to beat something that the devs themselves treat like shit. Overwatch dev team literally shits on their own game, does such scummy crap, tries to sap every penny from you. Hell 1 skin is 30$ with absolute lack luster aesthetics. Their balance team itself is probably the worse... They have absolutely NO idea what they are doing. Hope Rivals keeps OW in the dirt, time to put OW out to pasture. PS - they completely RUINED the 6v6 by removing half the heroes QoL's that were added to every hero.
I'm sure the streamers and content creators and "pros" will be so loud with their terrible suggestions that they will slowly turn Rivals into another terrible experience and then wonder why it got so bad.
been playing ow since the 2016 open beta, it's still a great game but I'm just so tired of balance issues that blizz refuses to address. namely widowmaker and tracer where if there's a good one on the enemy team (especially widow) they are just the server admin, made worse if it's a map that favors her. the ow1 day1 mode was entirely ruined by widow as well. rivals has its balance issues too and hopefully s1 includes a bunch of changes (bet they'll balance based on ban rates) but it's nice to finally have a real alternative to ow on the market. apparently ultron is the next support hero as well so that'll be cool.
The most jaw dropping fact about all of this isn't that Overwatch finally got dethroned. Not even that it was dethroned by Disney of all people. Is that Disney, considering the current state of affairs, let Marvel Rivals come out the way it did. And you'd think this would finally signal the for The Rainbow Flag Mafia but, sadly, this doesn't change a thing. Disney would rather turn into ashes than admit the "chuds" won. And I'm all for it.
I wanted to try Marvel Rivals since it was free. I was expecting it to be mediocre at best but it turned out to be waaay better and I'm hooked. I hope it'll remain chaotic and fun for a long time, I'm starved for such a game
While I'm less enamored with hero shooters over the years, Rivals is rather enjoyable and I look forward to the depth they are adding going forward. I think the initial success tells a lot about the market, maintaining this momentum and fan interest is where this will truly either outshine OW or fall behind in the long run. One of if not the strongest release in some time.
Loved OW 2016, have about 150 days played, but by the time OW2 came I was basically done. I never uninstalled it though and would jump in games from time to time. Rivals coming out was the first time I did just that
A lot of Overwatch's switch to heavy monetization was also due to the ESRB ruling that "Suprise Mechanics" was illegal as it allowed children, not of legal age to gamble, to purchase and engage in gambling. When that was passed, Blizzard quickly started to try to address the matter - you saw this in Heroes of The Storm too. That is why I think they ultimately decided to shaft the game for Overwatch 2 as a way to make acquisition of income easier (?). It was predatory. The fact my progress in Overwatch 1, ounce carried over, amounted to maaaaaybe one item - pissed me off so fucking much. I said fuck it, and uninstalled.
I've never played a hero shooter before. This game was on my radar since it was announced. I've enjoyed Marvel characters since I was kid. And the fact that it's 3rd person instead of 1st person was also a big draw for me. I'm having a lot of fun and even bought the battle pass. I can't wait to see what characters they add in the future.
the only way Blizzard can come back and reclaim the "crown" is to ditch OV2.Make a new game with OV1 model to begin with. What new game? A new Hero Shooter,HOTS style.Have all their franchise characters in one game to compete with Marvel Rivals.
I completely disagree that 5v5 is better from a competitive perspective. If you ever tanked 6v6 you'd see just how uncompetitive having 1 tank is. The complete lack of tank synergy removes most of the skill expression from the tank role completely as it no longer requires teamwork. 5v5 has boiled OW2 down to "keep tank alive and we win".
The competition for Blizzard is a blessing to the OW Fanbase. It will give those developers a reason to care for the fan base. Or it could just end up like GTA, no competitors equals lazy work because there's no rival competition.
Marvel rivals is being set up too much. Now it is the new thing, nobody knows how to play, nobody knows the meta, they just enjoy the new heroes. But wait till people get as good as they are in overwatch, discover the sustain meta (that was one of the main factors for ow’s downfall) and to be honest I don’t know how long the “if everything is broken, nothing is broken” mind will last. Now flaws aren’t noticed but bad things will appear as well as they did on overwatch. Also I think u focused too much on how ow heroes are paid while that’s not a thing anymore. A lot of things that u mentioned do not happen anymore. However marvel rivals is a really good game and something the ow’s team should be careful of. Only time will tell if people give up on one or not.
"The ones that failed to capitalize on that, were the ones that created it" That's not the first time it happened to blizzard, they fumbled the moba genre as well.

Marvel Rivals I had no hopes for, but since it's free, gave it a try. The Overwatch void has been filled. I have a new favourite game.
Marvel rivals is everything that overwatch isn't
Fun.
Its not just stealing a portion of the market when mr reached a peak of 20mil players across all platforms
Only problem with marvel rivals is that gave ironfist the god damn ability to fly
sorry but a lot of those bad changes are what the competitive scene wanted -
The devs aren't the only ones to blame for its downfall
That’s why I want them to stay playing Overwatch.
The monetization feels very fair right now. This could change of course, but it is the right start to capture market share. I have dabbled in Gacha games and the worst thing those games can do is give me pop ups of offers that smell like BS. It is like they are telling me they only want the Whales please instead of offering deals that feel like a value proposition.
only matter of time when MR has a PVE mode, it would be the nail in the coffin for overwatch
Not into hero shooters but you're pretty much on point with general sentiment towards blizzard. There's a huge difference between keeping your players happy and trying to strip out their money.
I swear the people who make overwatch are the kinds of people who spend all day arguing politics on twitter.
one year from now Mugthief will come out with a vid title the FALL OF MARVEL RIVALS. Thus cycle will continue.
@calcutlass ,the biggest problems with all these games ow included is that the suits take over once it becomes popular.
Nothing can save overwatch. They had their time. It’s over now
pretty sure net ease has had the rights to all the marvel characters since 2017.
yep this guy hasnt done any research at all, they have had multiple marvel games on the android market although not all of them were succeful but also i will be honest Netease never used android seriously, now they doing games for pc they are actually surprisingly good at it
I only wish CoD would see this same thing if you know what I mean but glad at least one half of the publisher is seeing some competition here.
There's probably some Chinese game studio working on a World of Warcraft killer as we speak
in FACT hahaha there is LOL i forgot the name but it is there and it looks promising
Blizzard made the pro decision to take a great game, and fuck up every single aspect of it
I have a bit of an issue with the video`s title. Stole implies that Marvel Rivals did not earn the crown. But it in fact did a few times over.
17:00 Bruh, Blizzard didn't create the Hero Shooter Genre lol
yeah this guy is full of nothing lol
The term hero shooter was created by Gearbox for Battleborn which is a hero shooter just like the others revealed July 8, 2014 before overwatch November 7, 2014.
BTW I am pretty sure Star Wars Battlefront 2 is really the first all the back in 2005 as it had playable hero characters in Luke, Han solo, the emperor etc from the movies with special abilities.
If you less strict you can take it back even further.
Don't worry. Blizzard has an ace up their sleeves. They can make Bastion trans.
Yeah thats worked for concord right?...RIGHT!?
Marvel rivals has a trans character.
@@NoxHelios Bet they'll try anyway lololol
@@BMcCosmic Wait what? That real? If it is it's most likely a recent swap that is not canon. Like blk Nick Fury.
@TheDorianTube it's loki who is genderfluid and has been in comics and actual real lofe mythology.
An American developer couldn't have made this game without shareholders fucking it up
I always point it out to people, that the Art style was really what hooked me up first. It’s brilliant and i love the skins
R. I. P. Overwoke
I dunno what you're talling about, for all of OW's failings, and there are many, role queue was one of the best decisions they ever made
When it comes to the hole rivals vs overwatch thing the only thing I can say is there both fun
I'm sure the streamers and content creators and "pros" will be so loud with their terrible suggestions that they will slowly turn Rivals into another terrible experience and then wonder why it got so bad.
Facts that's all they ever do
We Need More X-Men Characters In Marvel Rivals!
Great job sir
been playing ow since the 2016 open beta, it's still a great game but I'm just so tired of balance issues that blizz refuses to address.
namely widowmaker and tracer where if there's a good one on the enemy team (especially widow) they are just the server admin, made worse if it's a map that favors her.
the ow1 day1 mode was entirely ruined by widow as well.
rivals has its balance issues too and hopefully s1 includes a bunch of changes (bet they'll balance based on ban rates) but it's nice to finally have a real alternative to ow on the market.
apparently ultron is the next support hero as well so that'll be cool.
Blizzard “stole” from Warhammer and has drop the ball so hard
I wanted to try Marvel Rivals since it was free. I was expecting it to be mediocre at best but it turned out to be waaay better and I'm hooked. I hope it'll remain chaotic and fun for a long time, I'm starved for such a game
Blizzard has been on a downfall for quite awhile. They’re lucky nothing ever came along to topple WoW.
Wait overwatch is still live?
I thought they released overwatch 2 with false promises and the main Dev left
That Paladins mention is 🔥
While I'm less enamored with hero shooters over the years, Rivals is rather enjoyable and I look forward to the depth they are adding going forward. I think the initial success tells a lot about the market, maintaining this momentum and fan interest is where this will truly either outshine OW or fall behind in the long run. One of if not the strongest release in some time.
This is the type of fun I had with OW1, and I didn't put the game down for 2 years straight. This is gonna end up the same way for me.
Marvel has so much character.
So are we hoping marvel always releases free characters but season oass the skins for the new characters? That would be cool
I've never played a hero shooter before. This game was on my radar since it was announced. I've enjoyed Marvel characters since I was kid. And the fact that it's 3rd person instead of 1st person was also a big draw for me. I'm having a lot of fun and even bought the battle pass. I can't wait to see what characters they add in the future.
marvel rivals dominating overwatch is a good thing for overwatch. blizzard will finally have to buckle up their pants and try more.
They won’t. The whole company is a DEI hire.
Absolutely amazing game.
These are the games that WANT me spend money.
Blizzard is getting rekt in both angles, POE2 and now Marvel Rivals
Poe2 is not even wrecking poe1 😂
the only way Blizzard can come back and reclaim the "crown" is to ditch OV2.Make a new game with OV1 model to begin with. What new game? A new Hero Shooter,HOTS style.Have all their franchise characters in one game to compete with Marvel Rivals.
This .. would be nice . 6on6 . Hero shooter . just put their characters in the game and thats it .
Free to play games can go the distance. Look at the MOBA giants
I tried Overwatch again yesterday. 25 min queue for a 6 minute game. If Overwatch is dead, it deserves it. Rivals does literally everything better.
If Marvel Rivals added PVE to the game that's it for Overwatch
They probably will ngl
they said they will sometime in the future and there was gonna be a pve in launch but they decided to lay it off and see how the pvp does for now
"The ones that failed to capitalize on that, were the ones that created it"
That's not the first time it happened to blizzard, they fumbled the moba genre as well.
