How do the best shooters in the World resize their brass for maximum accuracy?

  • As you know, I ruffled a lot of feathers with this video when I told shooters to quit simply neck sizing their brass and F/L sizing with 0.002" shoulder bump was best. • STOP NECK SIZING YOUR ...
I decided to ask the pros how they size their brass to make sure it wasn't just me. There's always a possibility that what I believe is wrong, so I decided to go out and ask to make sure. Enjoy!

20 years of reloading, I always thought neck sizing was the most important thing for accuracy in brass prep. I'm convinced I was wrong. However, I would like to know if there is a significant difference in the cheap dies I use, compared to their dies? Is neck sizing better than using a $30 full length die?

    • @twilightroach4274

Canon Kroh if you are just a hunter, you can get away with using cheap reloading gear. If you are a competition shooter I believe that you only get the results that you pay for.
Btw I anneal (AMP) & full length resize every time.

as a guy who has shot BR for a long time - I've had a number of match winners over the years with my personal "best of match" being an 056 (6PPC at 100). when I got into the game, I was mentored "back in the day" to neck size only...as a result - that's all I have done with my BR gun and all my bolt guns - only FL sizing when they "needed" it. I must say that, I have been watching your videos...and you have really convinced me.... I need to change....and for the record - your videos never "made me mad"....I just needed to approach with an open mind, understand and embrace the paradigm shift. Thanks for what you do....attempt to do - help us to be better shooters. Who says an old dog can't learn.

Erik, I just found your reloading show, the first time I was aware of you was on Off The Ranch when you built Matts Texas Barndamindium clubhouse. I was pleasantly surprised to see that you also have a reloading channel. I have only been reloading for a couple of years, turning 68 in another week, so who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I'm mainly reloading to cut down on the cost of ammo, that way I can shoot more, I've only tried 300 yds friendly competition a couple of times, and I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to viewing your older reloading shows. Thank you for taking the time to video and share your knowledge. I do a full length sizing.

As a relatively novice reloader when I entered the game of course I turned to internet for advice and research. I was looking for accuracy and read about neck sizing. Learned first run to the range that it wasn't the correct information! The first UA-cam video I watched was the "stop neck sizing your brass" by Eric Cortina. I use German Salazar’s 2 step method for everything. Using a custom FL die that sizes the body/shoulder & neck down a hair, then I finish off neck tension with LEE collect die. I feel with this method, turning brass is unneeded for my shooting needs as it produces match type ammo with very low levels of run out that is very accurate very for my ar15

Using a rifle that cost almost $10,000, a powder dispenser that cost $5,000, and a rifle rest that cost almost $1,000 I find it hard to believe that you would desecrate it by using a Saami-spec chamber! Tell you what , settle the argument. ....Get an off the shelf Walmart gun and do a video on neck sizing vs. Full length in it! Because that's what the majority of people out there are using. Then compare it to shooting neck size from your custom gun.
And while you're at it, use something other than premium brass, team Lapua! Maybe Remington or Winchester like the rest of us.

    • @ErikCortina
      @ErikCortina  4 роки тому +2

      How will that settle anything?
I have compared neck sizing to F/L sizing in my competition rifles. I used what worked best in testing as do all these other guys I interviewed. You can do your own testing in your rifle and do what works best for you. Use good components, no need to hinder your loads with cheap components.

What you should include is that all of the pros use custom reamed chambers so that the brass is worked to a minimum even when FL sizing. The said sizing dies are adjusted to only bump the shoulder around 1 to 2 thou anyway. Not even mentioning the few that even use custom sizing dies.
Buying a rifle off the shelf, like most normal people, is a bit of a lottery with regards to chamber dimensions. For the unlucky ones that get "generous tolerance" chambers, you either replace the brass regularly or risk head-case seperation, replace the barrel with a tighter chamber or neck-size the brass. Neck-sizing is cheaper.

I ran some tests with FL sizing vs neck sizing and saw minimal difference in accuracy. Here is where neck sizing only was a problem for me...……..I loaded some rounds for hunting that were neck sized only and they chambered fine but about two months later I went to chamber one and it stuck. I thought it might be just the one round but 7 out of 10 of the hunting rounds were too tight to use. I will be shoulder bumping from now on.

I've learned to listen to people with hands on experience. It'll save you time, money, and possible injury regardless of the type of advice. At work I'd take the job advice of a 24 year old who's been doing the job for 4 years over the 30 year old who's been there 1 year.

Would love to see more stuff like this for 100 yards vs distance, jump first then powder or powder first then jump etc.

I watched. I only own 2 bolt rifles, just started reloading a little over 6 months ago. I've learned a lot since I've started. I have been using a LNL AP for all my loadings, just yesterday I got a single stage press. I'll be using that for all my rifle loads from here on..

I can't believe you are telling everyone to only neck size, oh, wait, I mean full length size. Thanks for sharing.

Erik, the way these guys smile, remind me of bass fishermen I used to fish with. You'd ask them, "What did you catch that fish with? With a big smile they'd say, "Dragging a 6 inch gator tail with a pegged 1/4 oz weight." But they threw buzzbaits and spinnerbaits all day! Unlike my old fishing buddies, I believe these guys! Cool bunch! F/L with a .002" bump in my notes!

Thanks Erik for the great video. I am not sure if I understood you right...
Is a Forster Bushing Bump NeckBench Rest® Sizing Die a good or a worse idea? You can put the shoulder back with them. Is it all about pushing back the shoulder or do you really need the FL die?
    Thanks for your help!

Thank goodness I found your channel prior to reloading. I will not neck size my brass.I will never neck size my brass. My brass will never be neck sized.
