I watched this in a hotel in Kilkenny, on a late wedding anniversary present. What a day!! I told the lad behind the bar I was from Galway, so he gave me the TV controls, just because he could. A nice touch. :)
A couple years ago, we tried to start a hurling club at Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, we never had enough interest to get two full sides to play, but we played smaller sides (and field), and even got some small sponsorships (to pay for gear, mostly). Still have two hurley's and a sliotar in my basement. Side note: Hurley's would make amazing zombie weapons. Screw Sean's cricket bat.
Yank here. We drove into Galway after our plane landed in Dublin the day this match was played. We were going in as the match finished, so all the traffic was going the other way, but it was crazy!
So I Live in USA and right now I really wish that we had this sport or rather it was one of the main national sports because just wow. This sport looks extremely fun and entertaining.
For those who came from reddit, scoring works Goals-"Over the Bar", (grew up with Irish parents and watched an All-Ireland final at Croke Park one year, and I've watched plenty of games in my summers as a child) I don't know what the exact term is for hitting the ball through the posts, but Goals are worth 3 points and hitting it through the posts is worth 1 point. I have to say that Hurling, Gaelic Football, and Soccer (I personally prefer football, but I'm American) are my favorite sports.
Thanks for the uploads. Great to be able to see full games in Australia. It would be nice though if you maybe didn't put the result directly under the video.... Any chance of the All Ireland replay???
galway to win all ireland. kilkenny may have been hurting for 8 weeks since the leinster final defeat but galway have been hurting 24 years!! GALLIMH ABÚ
you can take 4 steps with ball in hand, and as many steps as you like with the ball on the hurl (stick). you can only pick the ball off your hurl once - you can balance it on the hurl again after, but then you cant touch the ball with your hands until it hits the ground or has been in another player's possession
For all the non-Irish calling this "gay" etc. Your mom is calling you for your bath. Also for the scoring system. If the ball goes in the net, it's a goal, which counts for 3 points, over the bar, is one point. So, for example, 1 (Goal) - 17 (Points) it 20 points. Get it? Got it? Good :)
how is it that I am just finding this out now? Speed and physical contact of hockey but on a soccer/football field with small baseball bats/hockey sticks and something from every other sport ever. Awesome.
Since I have no clue what's going on, what's the rule about running with the ball? Why do they sometimes hold it in their hand and other times balance it on their stick?
From what I see, it's very much like Lacrosse, with hands allowed, but is a no, or minimum contact sport. Although the baseball-like ball, or "Silotar" can reach speeds of up to 150km/hour, there are no restrictions in gameplay to drive the player's speed up unlike Box Lacrosse, where the players (using no hands) have to move the hard rubber ball to the offensive side of the field within 10 seconds, as well as take a shot on net within 30 seconds of possession, with full contact allowed.
It’s insanely physical actually. While there’s no shot clock of sorts that’s because it’s not needed. On a 145m pitch a good player can score from about 120m away. That means you can’t leave anyone open at any time. Keeping the pace very fast
Im from kk but Galway were brilliant yesterday ,definately were the better team in the first half but the cats came back in the second!!! best all ireland final in a long time..so entertaining..but I do think the cats will win on the 30th..:)
I'm a kilkenny woman to the bone, weather it be kilkenny or galway that triumph in the final i'll be happy(cause it won't be tipp) huge respect for Joe Canning(& Co). UP THE CAT'S
the scoreboard is this 0-0. the left 0 is for goals in net which are 3 points. the right 0 is for over the crossbar and inside the goal posts which are 1 point.
I'm not sure how the point system works in this game, but the great thing about all sports is the universal language of an ass beating. Amazing sport of agility, dexterity, endurance, and skill, would definitely watch if shown in the US.
Watching the Sevens tourney that was in Vegas, they showed a graphic that showed actual "playing" times between all the sports. The only sport Football beat was Baseball, because baseball doesn't have a clock (huddles, formations, and time spent walking around after the play were counted as 'Non-play').
Alex Miller Doubt that little alcohol would affect the vision of an Irishman to be honest, Would take more than that! Even then it would still be easier to see the ball than a 240p video! xD
This was broadcast by the Irish national Broadcaster not a videographer and the reason you can't see the ball because its a wet day.Besides even with the best equipment its hard to shoot hurling because the ball is so small. You need HD for hurling and most matches are in HD since last year.Correction the weather has something to do with it alright, but its more where it was uploaded,it seems it was uploaded from from an online source not from The tv.If it was from the TV the quality would be much better.
You get one point if it goes over the bar and 3 points if it goes into the net. So if a team has a score of 2-10, they have 2 goals and 10 points scored so altogether they have 16 points. It's pretty easy once you watch a bit of it.
I was in Ireland and the game agsolutely was fantastic! I am a galway fan and I knew they would win! So glad they did. P.S. anyone know if there is any pubs in the Northern Va/DC metro area that puts the match on in the Pubs/Sports bars?
Its all over lads, Kilkenny are the All-Ireland Champions, Galway well Leinster Champions, they have a long long long way to go win win as many Bob O'Keeffe Cups and as for McCarthy well perhaps they will catch up on them in 2112
You call american football more destructive but look at all the padding and protection they wear , all we wear is a helmet , so bitch please sit your american arse down.
First, hurling is 3,000 years old so I'm going to say if anything Lacrosse is a poor version of Hurling. Secondly people use a net in lacrosse. In hurling you have to balance the ball on apiece of wood while sprinting at full speed. So, little skill involved in lacrosse. Thirdly the playing field is twice as big in Hurling which means way more running. TLDR: Lacrosse is a poor version of Hurling. Also American football is a poor, outrageously long, version of rugby
You realize that lacrosse was created by native Americans and not Europeans so these sports have nothing to do with each other This is why lacross is not a poor version of hurling but a completely different game
It's such a pity Niall Donohue died so young, would have been a great star now.
The OddLad
RIP
R. I. P
Niall Donoghue
DIED October 23rd
I'm guessing they used to play this with no helmets. That's hardcore!
I watched this in a hotel in Kilkenny, on a late wedding anniversary present. What a day!! I told the lad behind the bar I was from Galway, so he gave me the TV controls, just because he could. A nice touch. :)

man you are right but it does not get enough enough recognition on the internet and it has probaly the most passion and skill than any other sport
Yank here. We drove into Galway after our plane landed in Dublin the day this match was played. We were going in as the match finished, so all the traffic was going the other way, but it was crazy!
75 minutes later and I still don't know what I just watched.
This is like Baseball, Rugby, and Soccer. I love it. How haven't I seen this already...
Hurling has been around for over 3000 years.
This is how a sport should be played, no complaining about getting tripped or pushed or anything like that
So I Live in USA and right now I really wish that we had this sport or rather it was one of the main national sports because just wow. This sport looks extremely fun and entertaining.
This is badass. I wish it was popular here in the States.

I'm ashamed I've never heard of this until I saw the video. Looks like a blast to play or watch.
GALLIMH ABÚ
Yeah, it's called hurling. Ireland's national sport and one of the fastest sports in the world.
you can take 4 steps with ball in hand, and as many steps as you like with the ball on the hurl (stick). you can only pick the ball off your hurl once - you can balance it on the hurl again after, but then you cant touch the ball with your hands until it hits the ground or has been in another player's possession

There are clubs all around the country. I play in Milwaukee. Great Sport.
This game is so ridiculous. I was introduced to it by my cousins in Ireland. Wish it was popular here in the states
We're playing again tomorrow! You should be able to find a live link somewhere.
this is the hurling match with the greatest number hits and its only a leinster final
how is it that I am just finding this out now? Speed and physical contact of hockey but on a soccer/football field with small baseball bats/hockey sticks and something from every other sport ever. Awesome.
Since I have no clue what's going on, what's the rule about running with the ball? Why do they sometimes hold it in their hand and other times balance it on their stick?
Ceol Aniar - The Tribesmen Are Back (Galway GAA Hurling Song 2012)
my god... stick + bare hand to get the ball = all the broken fingers...
Dear god this is the manliest of sports.

as an american who usually dislikes most foreign things... this sport is badass.
We'll see you in September Galway
Im from kk but Galway were brilliant yesterday ,definately were the better team in the first half but the cats came back in the second!!! best all ireland final in a long time..so entertaining..but I do think the cats will win on the 30th..:)
+Peter molloy it's people like u that make me proud 2 be Irish
Hon the tribesmen for givin me such a amazing experience on Sunday
18:22 thats how to hit
how do you see the ball, just wondering...
how does the scoring system work?
They do play in the USA just go to any Irish neighborhood
I have no idea of what this sport is but i like it!
Top class hurling.. UP Galway
this is amazing
Hon da skethil
We should have won the all ireland final anyways i was at this match
I have no idea what's going on in this video, but I like it.
It's like soccer, football and hockey in one.
Things like this need to be in HD, I can never see the ball when the camera goes out wide :(
Keep in mind these guys are NOT professionals and do NOT get paid.
Injury? "Well ya gotta expect that Marty!" This is everything football should be.
I'm a kilkenny woman to the bone, weather it be kilkenny or galway that triumph in the final i'll be happy(cause it won't be tipp) huge respect for Joe Canning(& Co). UP THE CAT'S
just a tip, but it may be prudent not to spoil the game in the video description.
I can see this evolving into more of a mix of Football and Basketball(strategically speaking)
It was,but we (kilkenny) got them back later on in the year in the all ireland final(biggest game of the year)
Lacrosse is close though, with no exact date of it's origins but records of it being played around 2,000 years ago
As an American this reminds me of gym class when we got to play hockey. So much blood
I feel like these guys would be outstanding at baseball..
Considering I am in the MHC, Hurling is the best athletics that you can do. Football does not have crap on any position on a pitch.
mind blown beginning at the 10 second mark
THIS IS AWESOME IM NOT MAD JUST EXITED
The keeper's job seems a tad impossible. You'd have to have some amazing reaction time to stop that small thing going that fast
This is basically American Football, rugby, lacrosse, and soccer all in one sport
I used to play football and my brother plays hurling and neither of us have ever suffered any serious injury :)
There are hurling teams for colleges but I also wish it was a national sport however I also like it being an all-irish sport.
the scoreboard is this 0-0. the left 0 is for goals in net which are 3 points. the right 0 is for over the crossbar and inside the goal posts which are 1 point.
man, why do people even watch soccer/football when there are sports like this?
Long live hurling! Happy saint Patrick's
I can hardly believe I've never seen this sport before
I'm not sure how the point system works in this game, but the great thing about all sports is the universal language of an ass beating. Amazing sport of agility, dexterity, endurance, and skill, would definitely watch if shown in the US.
the most amazing thing about this sport is that they're all amateurs, so they don't get payed for this, it's just true passion.
because its an irish sport and hugely popular in ireland does have to be played anywhere else
There are clubs all over America. Mostly in metro areas though.
Watching the Sevens tourney that was in Vegas, they showed a graphic that showed actual "playing" times between all the sports. The only sport Football beat was Baseball, because baseball doesn't have a clock (huddles, formations, and time spent walking around after the play were counted as 'Non-play').
First time I've ever seen this sport, Holy Mother of Gingerbread Man. I don't think I'll be able to walk for a month after playing this..
Hurling is in the guiness world records as the fastest anyway.
Dame hard for the videographer to keep the ball in focus. Couldn't see it 90% of the time in this video.
Im guessing the videographer wasn't watching the game in 240p :D
Im Bozzy I'm guessing the videographer's probably Irish, and is about six pints into the day.
Joseph Boland Thanks for the lucid explanation.
I'm confused. At 4:33 he takes way more than four steps with the ball in his hand. Just one example
You get one point if it goes over the bar and 3 points if it goes into the net. So if a team has a score of 2-10, they have 2 goals and 10 points scored so altogether they have 16 points. It's pretty easy once you watch a bit of it.
I fail to understand how hockey and football fit into this equation. It's like Lacrosse in virtually every aspect.
I was in Ireland and the game agsolutely was fantastic! I am a galway fan and I knew they would win! So glad they did.
P.S. anyone know if there is any pubs in the Northern Va/DC metro area that puts the match on in the Pubs/Sports bars?
They all look a lot beefier than players used to be a few years ago
What tends to be the age limits for those clubs?
What exactly is a foul in this game?
was there some game hardluck kilkenny ;] have a county final saturday we are playing a good team so nervous
i may see if I can get this for my high school
yeah thats what i thought to except im australian and no matter what i will always love our sport Australian rules football
Hurling. Fastest sport on grass
What kind of sport is this?
Gaillimh Abu!!
Killkenny never knew intensity like that...that shook the sh** it out of them...!
Its all over lads, Kilkenny are the All-Ireland Champions, Galway well Leinster Champions, they have a long long long way to go win win as many Bob O'Keeffe Cups and as for McCarthy well perhaps they will catch up on them in 2112
Lets combine soccer, rugby, and hitting people. Perfect.
No idea what is going on, but I wanna play it.
I wish this took off in America:( oh well:(
In america, they would use full body protections.
***** Its rugby for pussies :D
You call american football more destructive but look at all the padding and protection they wear , all we wear is a helmet , so bitch please sit your american arse down.
imaging how bad that must hurt your hand, getting slapped by wooden sticks, and as a goaly catching a ball flying 100mph DAMN
As far as I can tell the rules are: whack the ball with stick, whack other players with stick, get whacked with stick. Did I miss anything?
I bet the team party for Galway after this victory was awesome.
What!? No traveling called?
Right, but this is the top level in hurling. Usually there is a pro-level for most sports. Hell, even in paintball we have a pro level.
It you get the ball over the bar it's worth one point. If you get it into the net it's a goal which is worth three points.

Nobody else is badass enough
its like golf meets lacrosse meets football
