I'm surprised Millbank bags aren't used more often in the states, especially amongst the outdoorists. I had only heard of them a few years ago, but use it whenever I begin the water purification process. They save wear and tear and lets the Sawyer filter I use do it's job more effectively. Really a no brainer.
Yep. When I got one I hadda explain it to a bunch of my prepping buddies. It’s not a common piece of kit here.
Normally its because want to drink straight from the filter.
I've contemplated a millbank purchase for awhile. There's always room for one more purification device I reckon. Never been a fan of the fetal position and other colorful side effects of nasty water. Great video!
Simple DIY job for the old bag which is still useable.....get a small karabiner, longer suspension cord, plastic or nylon grommet kit and repair it. I have used two Millbank originals for years and they are still going strong. One is carried in my smock pocket and the other in my water bottle pouch. Greencraft, Ian , made a similar idea of parachute material which is well worth looking at on his videos, and they also work. I use the Millbank's and Greencraft's ideas to save my Sawyer and other filters and extending their life. Having both provides options that will save life and prevent illness, and are versatile. My water collection kit also includes plastic tubing (clear see through), sponges, large capacity syringe, ziplock bags, plastic sheet for solar or bush still, water purification tablets assorted, an Iodine solution dropper, potassium permanganate, nylon and plastic bags with eyelets and cords to carry or hang ziplocks off the ground for storage of water before filtering, hanging a ziplock in a plastic bag also allows UV light to work on the contents before filtering. The tubing is for collecting water that is running between rocks where you cannot get a hand in, crevices and suchlike, the syringe provides the suction (there is a military kit similar), the sponges can be used to collect dew, or small water sources, i also have large and small syringes for wound irrigation (you can also use plastic bags for that too) in my medical and first aid kits. Then of course you can carry a camelbak too with cleaning kits. Might seem like overkill but i have been in places in UK where water was scarce and very hot days, dehydration, heatstroke etc threatened, not to mention frozen conditions and suspect water sources and Millbank's have their use there too. Love your video coverage, spot on every time. Water purification techniques may well be vitally necessary for everyone to learn in the not too distant future, alongside food shortages and the rest of the manure we are being threatened with by those in power and their mismanagement. Self-sufficiency and sustainment right down to water collection at home and growing your own food, and plants need water too.
ATB, stay safe, sorry this is so long.
Hey guys, this is Elvis from Forest Fundamentals. Thanks for all the great comments! The bag is available at - www.forestfundamentals.com cheers!
A really good idea, and the improvements by Forest Fundamentals bring this old idea into the 21st century. Much better than using a t-shirt or a sock to pre-filter your drinking water. I ordered some - am betting they work just as well in the US as they do in the UK!
@@Mike-kr9ys thanks for your order! 👍👊
Good review. Thanks Nick 👍
Thanks for the lesson for using the Millbank bag have a good day sir.
I've never heard of this tool before, but it makes so much sense! Definitely will have to give it a try.
Hi from Syracuse NY USA brother thank you for sharing your adventures
I've got one of these that I've paired up with a Savotta 10 litre water collection bag that rolls up nice and small. Then I can collect the water and take it nice and relaxed to my chosen spot. Then I soak Milbank in the collection bag and scoop and treat at my leisure!
Excellent review as always! Nice job brother 👍🏽👍🏽😎👌🏽
Great bit of kit, used one extensively in Canada.
LOOKS LIKE A GREAT ITEM!!!!
I’ve never considered owning a Millbank bag till I started following you especially being in the US where most guys haven’t used them. I got 1st last year & appreciate your vids! Cheers from Pennsylvania…..
Same here. Nick has used these on several occasions, as have other Bushcrafters in the UK. After this I'll be online looking. Update... I'll be ordering from Great Britain
@@baronedipiemonte3990 I ordered mine from a shop in GB and it got over here quicker than domestic mail gets delivered lol
I just got the new model today here in the US that I ordered right after you posted this video and I’m very impressed with it. Your video gave Forest Fundamentals a bunch of business from the communications I had the owner who was very professional. I would recommend this to anyone.
I have a similar one called the Brown bag, which has the wider opening and long lanyard/lace. it has the fill line stitched in but didn't come with a karabiner (which I added) or a waterproof bag. I find it works well.
Actually looking at it now, it's probably midway in width between your narrow millbank bag and your new one
I found a canvas tool pouch at my local hardware store for few dollars and had my wife reconfigure it to mill bank bag and works.
I am going to order one that you demonstrated. Like the new design. Thanks
Well I never thought you could make these bag's any better how wrong can you be I will be investing in one in the very near future thanks for the information on a piece of kit that could and (probably will save your life)excellent video nick thanks for sharing
Ace tips I've actually got one but not used it yet cheers nick
Informative and beneficial video! Thanks
Always a go to if in the doo-doo. I do have one of the originals. Good update. As you will know under jungle cover light is very low so seeing what you're doing without using torches is hard and when it's peeing down worse, plus you're hot and sweaty. The new design is a game changer there.
I added jungle knots to the cordage that the bag hangs from as an extra aid if other methods of securing the Millbank to a tree/bush were not available.
UPDATE FOR ALL IN THE US:
I've discovered that these bags *can* be had on our side of the pond, and that at least one respectable survival school/outfitter has been selling them for years. (Probably not the new model yet, though.)
Which? Is it Self Reliance Outfitters/The Pathfinder School?
Millbank bags are vital. Add my grayl and have no worrying about water
Brilliant video .thanks .
Thanks Nick, brilliantly simple squaddie proof kit. ordering mine now.! Scott Somerset
Thanks for your order Scott!
I have used a Millbank for years ,they are ` bomb proof` cant speak for this new one though it looks fantastic the problem with the old style you show was that made many people dislike them was you need to pre soak them they have to be wet through to work if you didnt know about this trick they did not filter properly and they took for ages - another great film
My standard filter has done me proud for years now with no complaints. I’d already got a bag to put it in after use and a longer piece of para cord and carabiner for easy use. I don’t think I’ll be going out to buy a new one ☝️. Good “how to use” video for new comers to the Milbank. 👍🏴
I just use my sock. Gives a nice taste of blue cheese as a bonus.
I own a Millbank bag dated 1944, eyelets included
Thanks for the review. I wish we could get here in the USA. Very cool item. Thanks again
Hey mate, we post to USA - postage for the Millbank Bag costs around £8 ish. I know it's pretty expensive but it is fully tracked.
Having already owned this exact bag I do agree with you on the positives it offers except for one thing I had wrong on mine. I had left the bag to soak and upon filling it with water (not squeezing it or encouraging it to filter faster etc), the water ended up dripping from different points on the bag and never fully ended up dripping as expected from the very end point. I felt like I was only getting the best part of 70% of water coming out of the bag and into the container etc. That's one thing I preferred with the old design was the stitching on the outside created that channel where water would run down to the very end point. These bags have the seems more on the inside and sort of takes that away from it. Just my personal experience and may not represent everyone else's.
Nick, I would sew a small net under that Millbank Bag so that you could suspend your bottle/cup under it and not stand there holding it.
Another dare I say “bottler” Nick🤣 Great vid and bit of kit. Always hard to turn out the issued ones for cleaning. Just been reviewing Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Quite impressive and proud to have served as part of the Commonwealth Forces here in Aus. Albeit quite some time ago now. Keep up the great work mate. 👍🤝🇦🇺
Great video! I’m always looking for a bombproof option for getting water. I use a filterback to prefilter water before i put it in my lifesaver waterfilter. Keeps the filter much cleaner and therefore last longer. The idea that I could use this bag and then just boil and drink the water really gives me options when i want to filter water for my family in the outdoors. I can really upscale this proces this way. By the way… i can see me using this bag for keeping small items in my backpack. Dual functionality is always a plus.
Yeah mate! The bag also makes a great tinder and utilities pouch!
I have been looking at getting one just didnt know which one to get till now.
That looks very good. 🏕
I think I’ll have a go @ making some I’ll send u one after iv made it along with some other treats x
After previous video demonstrating the Millbag use this has now become my top priority of kit next to a really good knife Thanks again.
Available at www.forestfundamentals.com mate!
@@elviscloss8913 The page 404'd yesterday and wouldn't load from menu neither ; ( Will check again. Thanks.
@@GettinReal hey mate, it should be working now :)
@@elviscloss8913 Niiiice! Ta : )
I had been familiar with millbank bags for some time. Always considered them a useful, life saving piece of kit.
But I was put off using them after seeing what Para Mortars did with them in Sangin. :D
its worth it just because the wider mouth makes it easier to clean . I remember being issued the mankiest had its own eco system one
At first glance, I'm guessing that the painted/printed area is to tell you at what water level you can start collecting water from, after the outside of the bag has self-cleaned during filtration. My old, ah, 'borrowed' Australian Army one had a line across the bag for the same purpose. It certainly looks like a good update on the classic design and will try and source one to replace my ageing relic. It's been in use for a number of years and has worked rather will in conjunction with a Katadyn filter on fast hikes or water boiling on longer adventures. Thanks for another great video Nick.
Yeah! The line is acts as a drain line - it shows you where what level to drain the water to before filtering. Letting some water out before collecting ensures all of the muck on the outside of the bag has been washed off and none of this makes it into your container!
Still using my old man's 50's issue Millbank bag in conjunction with my water filter, it's a diamond bit of kit that alway's work's, and adding grass, sand, charcoal can only improve it's filtering capabilities.
Yeah for sure! The millbank is a proper solid piece of kit!
It’s a age old winning piece of kit, Nick. Used one many times, as a kid.
I like the new improved version, though.
Glad you like em!
Ooh a bit of a mare 😂
Looks like a decent piece of kit.
They are now retailing at £26.00 on the Bushcraft store in the UK.
Hiya Nick, would be interesting if you compared Neil's own bag from Greencraft to see what you think!?
I do like a good sticker, I also like a good milbank bag, to the point i bought one.
Just ordered 2 from company direct as none at amazon, have an original from my days in govt service too,
Good video! A millbank bag has been on my radar for awhile but they're so damned difficult to find in the US. When I can find them, I can't budget for them and when I do have the budget, I can't find 'em lol
That's the best milbank bag I've ever used. You can even add more filtration to it sand charcoal material layers etc. Works everytime.
Thanks for your order mate! Glad you liked the bag!
Nice review. It’s one thing to Take a manufacturers word for things, but it’s quite another to get a review from somebody who uses these things in the field and he’s not affiliated with the company.
Never even heard of this until now, nice one mate. So I presume you would just need to boil it next and happy days?
And thanks to this video they are sold out. Great customer service from Forest Fundamentals though and I'm happy to wait a couple of extra weeks for something made in-house rather than sourced from overseas.
haha yeah! Everything went a little crazy after the vid. Got Nick to thank for that!
LOL.
It's weird. Even though I have absolutely no need for one of those, it's such a beautiful piece of design that I want one!
Thanks! Glad you like the design!
Hi thank you. Can you show what to do next please. X
@@hiddenvalleybushcraft5683 ok will look for it. Thanks 😊
I purchased one of the helikon tex millbanl bags, I've not had a chance to use it yet but I hope it's as effective as this one.
It should be mate! Helikon Tex make some great gear!
...I will stick to my old Millibank...the colour is nicer, but I admitt that the wider mouth will speed the filling-up!
Thank-you!
I followed the links for both the new and old millbank bag. Amazon page opens to filters but no millbank bag for old one. Link for new bag says "page can't be found".
I use one regularly. Seems like a decent bit of kit. Bit bulky compared to the original. A zip lock bag and a longer length of paracord and your only down a sticker.
If you're counting the pennies, you can make one out of the leg of an old pair of denim jeans. Just check for holes, then cut it to size, and chop the bottom seam off. Then get someone to fold the end and sew it with a sewing machine. Rough and ready but it will work. That's the fancy version. You cold just knot the end instead of sewing.
Went straight to amazon to get one... Out of stock and unsure if it will be restocked. 🙄.. As usual, excellent honest review.👍
Available on Ebay, just ordered 2
Hey mate, apologies they have just sold out on Amazon but are still available at www.forestfundamentals.com cheers!
@@scottfreh5884 thanks for your order mate!
@@elviscloss8913 Many thanks - couldn't find on Amazon or ebay, while your link was great and no shipping charges to USA
I stay in New Zealand. Where can you buy these from?
Defo gonna get one Nick, the olde mother in law's double D cups are getting a bit mingy. 👍
So on the 5 Jun 2022 when this video was published the bag was @3:11 £14.95. 5 days later and it's now on the site at £16.50. I know everything going up in price, but this is crazy.
I think when you pre soak the bag it should be inside out so you can keep dirt and debris off the outside. You don’t have to fill it you can put your hand inside and hold it down or grab the bottom and hold it most of the way underneath the water. If the outside is kept cleanish your cup will be cleaner. Do like the new one seems like a good piece of kit at a fair price. Have fun stay safe.
Yeah great point! We advice you let the water drain out so that it meets the black/white transition line before collecting for this very reason - to make sure there is no muck on the outside of the bag before collecting!
Hi Nick , how will I know where the water is oxygenated ? and may I say, another great video . Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 👍
Where it's flowing it should be oxygenated buddy, if it's just a still pool it can become stagnant
@@danqrl thank you, I thought so but just needed that extra confirmation 👍
Fast moving water.
@@markpavey7984 thanks Mark 👍
@@kevinstrong1639 where the water bubbles and is white etc etc. the turbidity re oxygenates the water by sending air through it. Hence slack calm water doesn’t. Stay safe.
We’re can I get one these
👌 👍
If not used one as a normally boil or filter
👍🏻
Very nice. Would you use it instead of a modern lifestraw or consider carrying both? I see the advantage in collecting for cooking. It will remove dirt but you must boil the water to be safe. You might want to explicitly state that for newbies.
it is a good thing in the long run.. you can use it to filter the water and then drop a tablet to purify it or 4-5 drops of 10% betadine (for 1l) or many other ways
@@frankalvarez7387 True, certainly a good backup or as you say for longer term use.
Don't know about the lifestraw, but the Sawyer filters can be a problem in low temperatures and can split if they freeze, so whilst they are easier to use in that it's a single filtration and the water should be safe to use they don't work everywhere all the time.
Also you don't have to boil, purification tablets like the Oasis ones are very cheap and very light and don't require fuel to use - in fact the British military 24 hour ration packs include 6 of them. They purify 1 litre, which is the size of the Osprey water bottle shown in the video.
@@cruachan1191 A Lifestraw is just like the Sawyer filters. Good point on freezing.
The bag does seem to offer a great alternative or backup.
@FukTheGender Agenda Yes, agreed 👍
Not bad for a small shower. 👍
Living in the Highlands I don't care about consuming peat in my water; once it's boiled I would class it as one of my five a day.
It would be just like drinking Scotch but with no alcohol.
@@budwilliams6590 I lived for years with a water supply coming straight out of a burn on the hill behind my house.
It would have been better if they had added the ability connect a dirty water bag for a filter , even just some attachment loops to let you rig your own system would help make it better
Would also make a good foraging bag.
The link to the old bag goes to a Browns millbank bag, but it doesn't look like you're using a Browns bag in the video? The Browns bag uses the same spec fabric as the original Military (green) issue ones which is a much tighter weave and finer filtration (slower too) than the old bag you have in the video.
Not £14.95 anymore, now its £16.5, I guess a lot of people clicked on the link =)
Puritabs and drink through your teeth Royal! Good enough for the Pongos good enough for anyone.
no surprise... the price has already gone up 10% ?..
'literally years' lol wow
What a faff, sawyer mini filter, far easier than a mill bank bag plus you still need to purify after mill bank…
Link is bad. I'd probably buy one if the link worked.
hey mate, this is Elvis from Forest Fundamentals. The bag is available here - www.forestfundamentals.com
Tried Google and it still isn’t working right. Would be an excellent piece of gear.
