Im still pretty nubish to leather crafting (totally your fault i got into it by the way) could you go more into detail about how dying resist and the finishing process works. i have been looking and am having trouble figuring it out for myself. great work though keep it up its always fun to watch. Im working on the dice box next.
I'm so happy to see the reality behind work like this! Other videos always show such perfection. But in real life it's fits and starts and messy mistakes.
It's 1:30 in the morning and I'm watching a leather tooling project that I'll have to re-watch again later just to actually retain it. Still worth the grogginess.
I like the style you have developed. Showing what mistakes you make, and having a nice commentary to it too. And I really wants to start making leather crafts.
Just found your channel today! Your videos are much more detailed and inclusive to your audience. Most people fail to explain the process, tools, reasoning which causes me (and others, I think) to lose motivation after watching twenty videos and still not having a clear understanding. Thank you so much for truly teaching those who are new to leather crafting! It is greatly appreciated 👍
I had almost used antique finish without a sealer, but I used it on a test strips and I noticed a cut made into dark so I didn't I'm really glad I didn't. And it's weird that I was never told that because I actually worked at Tandy Leather to learn this, but no one told me!
I’ve been doing the craft for 30 plus years and although I appreciate all the tips I find all you guys use too much glue and don’t want to trust your math as far as stitching is concerned. Beautiful work, dude. Your tooling is superb.
Haha, love the sorcery bit! Wish you’d teach us how to do that! 😋 The way you explain your reasoning process shows you are an excellent teacher. Thanks
Finally someone who is not afraid to show their mistake. Awesome video! I thought you would have kept using the Cobra cylinder head sewing machine for the rolled edges.
Best video I’ve seen on leatherworking this year by far! I have all of the machines you mentioned but, never see them being used and greatly appreciate your inclusion of them. I also greatly appreciate the very honest narrative. I learn by my (and your) screwups much more than any other method. Exceptional work and of course, your editing and cinematic skills are top notch!
5:24 Although I would agree with you about the proper way of using an antique gel; by not putting a resist on it can give some interesting results. Sometimes by not following the rules you can get some unique and nicer results.
might want to give aqulim 315 its a water base contact adhesive.dont know if you can get it in Canada but you can find it in the us one place I know you can get it from is district leather supply.it holds just as good as barrage without the odor.
I’ve tried many of the water-based contact cements and none have been any good. Only application I’ve found they excel at is attaching synthetic fabrics to leather. I use them for gluing synthetic zippers into leather before sewing. Just strong enough to keep it in place but, not a bit more.
I'm 19 I love leather work I really want to learn but my budget or current situation can't allow it 😂 but I thoroughly enjoyed this and learned in one way or another, thanks .
I use a book binding PVA glue called Jade 403. You can get it on Amazon. I've used the white cement from my supplier but it doesn't seem to work as well. Jade dries quick though, so fair warning haha.
I use Seiwa Leather Glue. Water based. It dries FAST and once the two pieces when they contact are like cement. 10 of 10 would recommend. I won't use anything else now.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop It is NON-TOXIC. No foul smells. Incredible strength hold. Still pliable after drying. I get it from Rocky Mountain Leather Supply, sure it is available from many vendors. They are the makers of Tokonole. Highly recommend. I will not go back to contact cement after using this.

What sre the weights that you use for the patterns? It looks like a simple cut of aluminum with a handle added. Is it custom or something that can be purchased from a particular shop? Love the work and your videos, and thanks!
My studiomate made them actually, he has a few left for sale if you're interested. www.etsy.com/ca/listing/720860944/fabricleatherpattern-weights?ref=shop_home_active_10
I've a question on the larger carving piece. Is that Tyr and the Great Wolf, son of Loki, Fenris (also called... is it Fafnir or fenrir?) and... Tyr's severed hand? So is that scene is The Binding of Fenris?
What kind of material do you use to cut your patterns in the beginning of the video? I’ve been looking for a nice sturdy material to use for some patterns of mine
Nope, you can wipe it on, with a very lightly damp sponge, do a couple of coats. Harder to avoid streaking and since Ikinda of went straight to a spray gun I'm not the foremost expert on not using one in that case. :) leatherworker.net is a great resource though
I have a few of the regular Tandy bevelers that I like, there should be links off my amazon storefront (link in the description) Don't get the keen bevelers or pro bevelers.
1) love your table surface 2) that oil tan 😻 3)i wish i could do tooling magic like that! 4) so sexy watching that machine work 5) love the honest process ^can relate to bending a bag onto a machine plate 😹
I've added a card at that time, it's my kidney pouch video. This video wasn't supposed to go up when it did so it wasn't finished, the pattern I'm still working on. :)
Adding an antique without a resist is not "wrong". Some carvings need the sharp contrast some don't. If your carving calls for contrast add a resist if not then don't.. There is no right or wrong way it's subjective.
Everything can quickly become subjective with that way of thinking. 99% of carving is going to look better with contrast. But in my opinion if you want less contrast you should be dying your piece first, then using a resist, then applying your antique. Just muddying antique on a project is incorrect, again, in my opinion. Not to mention antiques don't penetrate well, any scratch is going to pop through if you haven't dyed your project when you want less contrast.
WHOOPS!!! I managed to release this totally not when I meant to. I'm now scrambling to finish the pattern. *facepalm*

id like to retract that. i just found your video on it after days of looking for stuff.

I REALLY love and appreciate that you include your mistakes and talk us through them!
Your videos are becoming addictive and your narratives get me laughing at times.
You have a very clear sounding voice. Furthermore, you give info pertaining to the instructions that you are using as you speak. Loving it!!!
Would you consider a jacket or coat? Maybe a backpack? I love your patterns so I figured I'd ask

That was a very fun video to watch! Cant wait for the second video and find out how you fixed it. Thank you!
This is an absolutely beautiful piece.
I love your work, especialy that whole Viking look, feel to it - Beautiful!!!
I love how you show you mistakes and exsplain how to fix it. P.S. I have been practicing my snapping no magic yet, but I'll keep trying.

Good project. Great video. When you take the time to point to a link, probably should add the link, tho.
Totally agreed, I released this video at 1:30AM instead of 1:30PM, so it wasn't ready. It should be fixed now.
Where can I get those cool weights
Where did you get those pattern weights? I have been looking for something like that. Great video keep it up!!
Very informative, thanks. When you wet the leather before using the dye, how wet is it? As wet as you'd make it for tooling, or wetter?
Ya, as wet as tooling but with no drying time... maaaybe wetter.
Excelente!!!!! Adorei!!!!
ive been watching your videos and they are all very great but are there any tips you could give me on how to start getting into leather working
Baby steps, find something you want to make that's not too crazy, get a small assortment of tools, and grow it from there.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop thank you so much for getting back to me but what tools should i start with please reply to grimreaperislit@gmail.com
Awesome video!
How do you clean the airbrush after using resist with it?
Dye reducer?...
Honestly I fire water through it and then hope it doesn't go to crap. Sometimes a cleaner or acestone. But quite often unjust use water.

This makes me think it would be fun to make an apothecary satchel from Skyrim.. Feel free to beat me to it. =)
I've been wanting to make one for so long! I'm such a skyrim nerd!
I've a question on the larger carving piece. Is that Tyr and the Great Wolf, son of Loki, Fenris (also called... is it Fafnir or fenrir?) and... Tyr's severed hand?
So is that scene is The Binding of Fenris?
Sure is. The strap across Fenrir holding the antler tip is my artistic interpretation of the binding.
Fieblings makes an excellent white glue that U should try.✝️⚾🙃
I'll order it in a second here I've been going a bit mental with this latest craaaaap.
What do you mean by "pull up qualities"?
Question:
Why do you go over a couple stitches at the end with the sewing machine?
To help lock them down.
What are those weights you are using called?
Where did you get the leather weights?
Where did you find/get the weights you're suing to hold down your pattern pieces?
My studiomate made them, he sells them on his Drawbridge Props etsy.
What kind of material do you use to cut your patterns in the beginning of the video? I’ve been looking for a nice sturdy material to use for some patterns of mine
A good one is manilla folders. I'm cutting manilla card stock off of a roll usually or just using some brown paper from the hardware store.
Thanks!
When using the resist, do you have to use a spray gun?

Looks great, any chance you'll do one of Arthur Morgans satchels from Red Dead Redemption 2?
Am yet to play Red Dead Redemption, not sure.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop Oh you should. It's one of my all time favorite games ever made. Easily top two.
What are the finished dimensions of the body of the bag?
12" x 8" or so since it's a bit bigger than iPad sized.
Tyr and Fenrir?
Indeed
@@DarkHorseWorkshop I posted that before seeing all the other Norse imagery. Love it
What are the weights you use in this project?
My studio mate Levi of Drawbridge Props made them. Seamstresses use fabric weights, he made some heavier ones for leather.
Is Oiltan leather water resistant or to a certain degree??
Honestly I always assumed it was a bit more resistant but never honestly looked into it.
