  • Bummer dude. There was a North component to the wind direction, and flying slow can put you in a turn into the trees. He was fine. The trees caught him gracefully but sustained broken leading edges on both wings.

I appreciate the guy filming being kind and concerned instead of like what I see in many other compilations of hang gliding videos where there are a bunch of D-bags yelling and jeering at the pilots who aren't as "perfect" as the guys on the ground doing the yelling...I think that shows the ideals of the sport rather than screaming insults or jeering taunts.

Daniel D Hang Gliding is a small group here in the US. and declining. I believe we need to encourage people, and less berate. Pilots can be harder on themselves already, especially after an unplanned crash like that. nobody wants to be "that guy" Another example how it can be in such an unforgiving sport like this. it's aviation.

Looked like at about 30-34 secs the nose pitched up and mushed out and at 35 secs into an involuntary turn. You did the right thing I think in taking the tree landing to trying a hard right turn low and slow which could have been a tip over tip roll ! Glad you walked away.

That actually makes me feel better about flying - that a scary crash into trees might not be so bad. Everything's worse in the imagination! Thanks for posting.

Well we all learn from are mistakes, and our mistakes can help save others from doing the same thing (above) and killing themselves. Lesson learned: Don't fly too slow in a hang-glider with wind.

The classic question after an event such as this or any other sport where your buddy takes a soil sample. I usually would say, "Quit laughing! I think I broke something." when it came to dirt bikes.

It’s not often you see your buddy crash into trees like that and come out in scratched and alive. I would say he came out as perfect as one could be given the scene. I’ve seen much worse. Hang Gliding is so easy it can kill you. It’s still aviation.

Simply didn't keep the speed up on approach. Speed is your friend until you get into ground effect where it's smoother air. Mostly. Shit can happen anytime though. You have more control with the nose lower. He should have been lower to the ground before leveling out. My instructor pounded that into our brains.
