The more I use my Gefell MT71S, the more I’m convinced that the M7 capsule is maybe the single best capsule ever made for a mic. Very silky smooth on top and very bold and intimate midrange without being as honky as something like a U87. Wunder also uses an M7 capsule in their CM7 Suprema, which is a very high end U47 clone, and that mic sounds absolutely incredible. One of my personal dream mics but is sadly $7k.
@@danielgloor8401 Ugh. Blame the ultra strict EU RoHS regulations concerning "hazardous" electronic components, which Switzerland also follows. The stricter RoHS guidelines is also why UA/Bock Audio had to redesign the dc converter circuit on the Bock mics in order to be able to sell them overseas.

I really don't know what you're talking about, other than if the membrane material was different. The M7 and K47 create the exact same pressure gradient, the hole pattern is the same, the capacitance is the same, and the diaphragms operate the same. There is no "bump" in the K47 that does not exist in the M7. In other words, if the membrane in the M7 is the same as the K47, there is literally no sonic difference between the two. Perhaps the tensioning is different between manufacturing may be slightly difference, but tests have shown that there is no sonic differences between the two. I've working on tube mics for 14 years, and have made the measurements myself.
First, the M7 membrane is glued to the backplate, whereas the K47 membrane is screwed in with a tensioning ring. But ok, let’s ask Klaus Heyne. I believe his exact words are: “Neumann M7 sound distinctly different from Neumann K47. Both are compelling and iconic sounds: M7 is authoritative in the upper mid frequency range, ca. an octave above where the K47 shines. Or, to put it simply: K47 appears more full-bodied and M7 is a bit more brilliant up top without being strident.” I’m happy for all your years of experience. Modern M7 capsules, as in the 3u Audio one that is also currently used by Telefunken reflect this exact tonality, as a way to reflect a more vintage style capture.
I do not believe 3u has a mic with it already installed. Though, I guess you could always email Guosheng and ask if it's possible for them to put one on a Warbler II. It is a really great sounding capsule.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff I reached out to Guosheng. He says he actually uses the m7 capsule in their gz47fet. The gz47fet V uses a k47 type capsule “with the smoother top end” in his words.

Mark! Hi! I just bought a tube mic with an m7 capsule upgrade - my mic is the peluso 2247 se - I was hoping you could better explain what the m7 modification would do vocally for this u47 type clone? Is it the same as your video where the m7 capsule would alter the sound of my microphone and make my vocal even warmer/smoother/ buttery ? I feel like buying this mic with the upgrade was better than the mic without it. My vocal is folk/songwriter (think damien rice, etc).
Hi Ryan, So, in general, an M7 capsule will sound more "vintage" than a K47 capsule on the same circuit. The K47 evolved from the M7 which is why they live in the same sonic family, but overall, the M7 should have a little more thickness in the lower mids and a touch more air up top. The K47 is a bit more focused in the mids with a touch more of what you'd call presence. An M7 backplate is usually drilled to have slower transient response, which along with the low mids, give it a more buttery feel than a K47. So, if let's say if you consider the K47 to be the sound of the 60's and 70's, the M7 should be considered the sound of the 50's and 60s, if that makes sense. Modern M7 capsules are more refined than their original thick-PVC diaphragmed counterparts of old, but their identity of living in the sonic realm somewhere between ribbon and condenser sound remains.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff this is amazing thank you. My vocals are folk/songwriter similar to damien rice, fionn regan, ryan adams - I love how they all have very clear, upfront but warm, almost analogue/buttery vocals - would you say my new addition of the peluso 2247 with the m7 mod was a good choice? I'm choosing between this mic or my actual u87ai for my album - which I also love but something tells me my voice will benefit from the tube mic of the 47/m7 ! Thank you so much for this perfect reply!
@@ryancohenmusic The thing with mics is that the only way to know if they work on your voice is to hear them in person, so it's kinda like me trying to tell you what your eyeglass prescription is just by looking at you. The 87 sound and the m7 sound are quite different, so let's say you cut leads on one, you'd preferably want to cut backgrounds with the other to help give each section the right sonic space. In general, I think if your arrangements aren't too busy, the M7 with tube should give your voice a bigger, rounder sound, but for something like a busier rock track with distorted guitars, big drums or a massive low end in general, an 87 sound would help your vocals cut through better. Chris Barron, lead singer of Spin Doctors is finishing up a new solo "singer/songwriter" record right now and they're using one of my tube mics with the same M7 capsule that's in the mic in the above video, and though I haven't heard the rough mixes yet, I've been told it's perfect on his voice, and big. The larger vocal presence fills the sound out where otherwise there would be lots of other instrumentation to keep it from sounding sparse.
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff you're exactly right - I would say my album is more minimalistic ( primarily need a big larger warm vocal presence) and Gibson acoustic, and the songs have sparse orchestral arrangements behind them and light piano). It’s a modified Alctron GT2B.
