    During JOSAA counselling, students face a number of confusing questions or dilemmas like:
    Whether to choose a non-circuital department in a higher ranked institute or a circuital department elsewhere?
    Whether to take just any seat in an older IIT or to go to some desirable department elsewhere?
    Whether to listen to one's heart's desire or to follow the advice of parents, teachers etc.?
    Each of these questions have different answers for different students. In this video I discuss some important points that students should consider so that they can arrive at the answers suitable for themselves.

    This is failure of IIT admission system.Students must be admitted without branch allotment. Branch allotment must be done after first year when students get some insight about branches. It is possible as they all study common courses in first year.

      Not even IITs take the lead to bring about a change in branch selection methodology like in the European or American Universities.
      Even if they did everyone would still mindlessly chase in the sequence CSE->ECE->EE->ME etc.
      Most of the students who get selected are the type that are able to work extremely hard consistently for an externally acquired goal that is not deeply rooted in their brain and are also Intelligent. (This doesn't happen in developed countries because of less population and respectable colleges even at mid-level which is not the case in India) These types never really grew the neural networks required to determine what they want to be. So even if the branch change method is made more flexible it would still be useless and would step back to the current style. Most of the people I know who made it into IITs are just enjoying their time and waiting for the placement day and very understandable because they worked so hard till burn-out and everyone around them congratulated them so much that they think that they have completed life, why would they wonder what to choose between Electrical or Mechanical when they can just go to the website and check for placement stats, how does it even matter if they like to study Advanced Magnetism or Advanced Rotational mechanics? they literally studied any chapter thrown at them for the sake of a future with a high-paying job so why wouldn't placement stats not be the no. 1 priority for them? It would be a illogical to prioritize ones interests at this point

    The main advantage at IIT was the students with many talents and living in a dorm. I spent 5 years as an undergraduate student as an average student, playing bridge most of the time. Did not really know what to do when I graduated and so like most (40 years back) went to USA as a MS student. Again, being an average student did ok academically but did learn a lot about life. Now, I am retired but have done well in career and financially. Note: Not one day did I work as a mechanical engineer even though it was my specialty in school. In short, be curious, passionate about something and you will do well.

    Sir, Your views and thoughts are quite logical and thought provoking. On this, I would like to share some thoughts. The basic issue is most Class 12 students have not much aawareness of engg. departments. I have seen many students only corelate Comp. Sc. with Department because they have a curriculum in Class 12 as Comp. Sc. Their mindset is only comp. sc. is the only area to study further. Secondly, they observe in society 90% of his friends are in circuital branch, that is another motivation works behind the mind. Even after getting scope in IIT, NIT non circuital branch they opt for Tire2 or 3 colleges.

    Sir really an informative video. Lot of students would get benefitted from this lecture. In this connection I have question which many aspiring students ask.
    1) Does location of an IIT plays a factor in shaping a student's career? Or simply it's a myth.To clarify I am giving an example. Suppose a student has an option both at IIT KGP Chemical Engg and also at IIT Delhi Chemical Engg which institute he should select? I personally think this may be a dicy situation since both are old IIT's but one is located in the Capital and other is situated in a semi rural area. Rural Urban divide is a reality in India. Kindly throw some light in this issue.

    • @anshab16
      @anshab16 Рік тому +1

      as an iitian (iit guwahati 3rd year) -> location does play a factor, in kgp the surrounding area is not urban so there is not much to do outside, iitd would be much better as far as college life goes, as far as academics and placement goes, these are both top colleges so your own effort in the next 4 years matters wayy more than the college you select for placements, location only determines your life other than studies

    • @anshab16
      @anshab16 Рік тому

      nearly the same exact companies come for placements in all old iits and also the professors are the top researchers in thier own respective field, imo academics in all old iits are very similar after talking to my friends in other iits

    Sir is the branch BS+MS(5 yr) in Chemistry (UG) still there in IIT Kgp for 2023? Becuase I am unable to find that course on JoSAA choice filling website but its curriculum is there in IIT Kgp website. Or sir do we have to take the BS degree of 4 years first through JoSAA and then during college we can shift it into the integrated MS one??? Do we have that facility in IIT Kgp sir?

    Dear Prof. JC, Thank you for the fantastic effort on your UA-cam videos, they're really very informative for a wide audience. I am particularly interested in the faculty recruitment process at IIT KGP (in your department for example) and wonder if you could shed some light on it. For instance, what goes into the initial shortlisting process - are there any specific criteria that a candidate needs to satisfy to get shortlisted? Next, how is the candidate selected after the faculty seminar - are all the professors who attended asked for feedback (in a specific questionnaire format or as a general impression they've formed of the candidate), do all professors count equally or is there a committee of a few that makes the decision? Finally, what does the final interview consist of - general questions or specific subject knowledge related questions? Would be great if you could answer these questions here or through a video. No resource exists regarding this topic as far as I have seen. Thank you.

    Just want your honest opinion here. Suppose a student loves math, is passionate and can get a seat for an integrated MSc. But parents say that becoming a professor won't get you the kind of salary that an IT job will, and discourage the student...what do you say? In a way, the student does see the money part as there are software engineers all around living luxurious lives. Please be honest... how's the income of a faculty in a College like IIT Kharagpur? No need to reveal yours but some idea and a realistic view of whether it's enough to support a family in future.
