Summer Garden TOUR | July Edition | 2022

  • I don't think I've done a proper "garden tour" video with you guys yet this year. The heat this summer has been relentless, and the humidity - oh man. But not much rain to go with it all, so we've been watering just about every other day with an overhead sprinkler. We'll go through the bed today one by one and check in on each one of our crops as we go. For the most part, it's full of success stories - minus a few carrots and peas I lost to flooding in the early spring months.

With all you surprise volunteers, you’ll have a nice fresh stash to eat from next year! You took care of the garden for the last 6 years. In your year of rest, the garden will take care of you.

I literally just came in to take a break and got this notification. The garden looks beautiful! I'm knee deep in pulling tomato plants, harvesting peppers and later it will be Bush beans, cukes, summer squash and hopefully some pole beans. Oh and one bag of potatoes look ready. I was sick so everything went wild lol. So lots of weed pulling too. Then comes the fun part of putting it all up. Happy gardening from Georgia!

So glad to see someone explain when to pick Malabar spinach, and to really be clear that the flavor isn't awful. Someone else kept mentioning the mucilaginous nature, then described the flavor as not too bad. Which didn't sound appealing in the slightest. Mine lived and breathed entirely unharmed all last year. All I could think was, I'm really not wanting slimy bitter spinach for dinner. lol Thanks, maybe I'll be brave enough to try eating them now. (The volunteers!)

Rachel the malabar spinach does very good here in the tropic. There are two varieties: green and red. Let the "fruit" dry and you'll have seeds for next season. You can grow them in a basket and let it Vine down

I'm so happy for you! I'm in West Michigan and my plants are maybe 1/3 the size of yours. First time of planting at this location and nothing is doing well. We found out that for years loads of cars were located there. We are trying to amend the soil. We just added 13-13-13 hoping that it will help. We have started a composting area. Mulched with straw planted in late May early June. We're going to cover everything this fall but if you can give us any suggestions on what we can do to help fix the soil. We aren't using raised beds it's strictly in ground. I have done so much work on it, it's heart breaking

I've struggled with ALL root veggies lol. Beets, carrots...some success with the white type Japanese turnips. Also struggle with dill and parsley and basil for some reason. Great garden! My tomatoes this year are everywhere. It's been sooo hot here in Kentucky, zone 6b that I just in my 70's can't tolerate being out in that heat so it's a basic jungle out there lol. Do have lots of green tomatoes though so hopefully, even with neglect, I'll get some tomatoes.
